Altaf Bukhari welcomes govt’s plan to convert Rajbagh footbridge into motorable link

Srinagar, Nov 05: J&K Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Wednesday welcomed government’s decision to begin the process of converting the Rajbagh footbridge over the River Jhelum (near the Silk Factory) into a motorable bridge.

In his statement, Bukhari said that the earlier decision to alter the nature of the project was “foolish, short-sighted, and ill-advised,” reflecting a lack of understanding of administrative priorities and public interest on the part of the then chief minister Mehbooba Mufti.

He said that “it should be investigated why this project, conceived as a motorable bridge, was later altered and converted into merely a footbridge, despite expert opinion favouring its construction as a motorable bridge, and despite the fact that a substantial amount of Rs 12 crore had already been spent to initiate the project in that form.”

“It should be investigated that who got benefitted by altering this project,” he added.

Bukhari further said, “The bridge was originally conceived as a motorable structure to help decongest traffic in and around the city centre. I vividly recall how, as the concerned minister and MLA representing the area, I had convinced the then Chief Minister, Mufti Sahib, to approve its construction for that very purpose. The foundation work was accordingly undertaken with that objective.”

“Sadly, that vision was derailed. His daughter Mehbooba Mufti, during her tenure as chief minister, unfortunately altered the nature of the project, converting it into a mere footbridge just to favour some of her acquaintances. This was done despite the fact that a substantial sum of Rs 12 crore in public funds had already been spent on the original design of a motorable bridge,” the statement reads.

“Displaying her Nadirshahi behaviour, she unilaterally decided to downgrade the project, leaving the public disheartened and the area’s traffic woes unresolved,” It adds.

“Changing the fundamental nature of the project was a foolish, short-sighted and ill-advised decision that reflected a lack of understanding of administrative priorities and public interest by Mehbooba Mufti,” Apni Party President said.

Welcoming the present government’s decision, he said, “I sincerely appreciate the present government’s decision to rectify that misstep and restore the bridge to its original purpose — a fully functional motorable link. This long-awaited development will not only ease traffic congestion but will also fulfil a long-cherished aspiration of the people.”

India-US trade talks “going on very well” says Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal

India-US trade talks “going on very well” says Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal

Auckland, November 05: Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday indicated that talks on the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement are “going on very well” but said that there are “many sensitive and serious issues” and it would take time.

“Talks are going on very well. There are many sensitive issues, many serious issues, so naturally, it takes some time,” Minister Goyal said, when asked to provide an update on India-US trade talks.

Recently, a government official had asserted that India and the US were “very near” to finalising the first tranche of the ambitious Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).

The official affirmed that both sides are converging on most of the issues and negotiators of both the countries are sorting out “language of the agreement”.

Talks are progressing well on the agreement and no new issues are acting as hurdle in the negotiations, he further said, adding that both parties are hopeful of the deadline.

On October 23, Thursday, negotiators of both countries had a virtual discussion. So far, five rounds of talks have been completed since March for the first phase of the bilateral trade agreement, initially decided to be inked by the “fall of 2025.”

The bilateral trade agreement, formally proposed in February following directives from leaders of both countries, aims to more than double trade volumes from the current USD 191 billion to USD 500 billion by 2030.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal was in the United States in September, leading high-level trade negotiations as both nations work toward concluding a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement. Goyal was accompanied by a delegation of senior ministry officials including Special Secretary and India’s Chief Negotiator Rajesh Agrawal.

In mid-September, a team of United States officials led by Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, Brendan Lynch, had “positive and forward-looking” discussions with the officials from India’s Department of Commerce in New Delhi, and it was decided to intensify efforts to achieve early conclusion of a mutually beneficial trade agreement.

Over the past few months, India and the US have been actively negotiating for the interim trade deal.

Initially, US President Donald Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs on Indian goods that came into effect on August 1, even as there were hopes of an interim India-US trade deal that would have otherwise helped avoid elevated tariffs. A few days later, he imposed another 25 per cent tariff, taking the total to 50 per cent, citing India’s continued imports of Russian oil.

The 50 per cent tariffs came into effect on August 27.

US President Donald Trump had imposed reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries with which the US has a trade deficit.

Family background does not determine who can govern: Bihar governor

Srinagar, Nov 05: Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Wednesday confirmed that all preparations are in place for the first phase of voting in the state assembly polls, calling the elections a celebration of democracy.

“Tomorrow is polling day, and preparations have already been finalised. I am confident that democracy in our country has become very strong,” Khan told reporters here after attending an event at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC).

Calling the polls a celebration of democracy, Khan said that one’s family background does not determine who can govern.

“The person who runs the government is chosen through the ballot box. They receive a mandate from the people of India and the states for a specific period. They are not sovereign; the people of this country are sovereign,” the governor remarked.

Khan highlighted the examples of President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that their ascension to the highest offices in the country sends a powerful message: there are no limits to what anyone can achieve.

“What message does this send to the common man, especially to the youth? It demonstrates that we have a system where there are no restrictions on how high you can aspire to go. However, you must earn the people’s trust. After that, the sky is the limit,” he added.

When asked about the dual power system in Jammu and Kashmir under the Union Territory setup and the lack of restored statehood, Khan acknowledged that it is unfortunate for Kashmir to have endured such painful situations.

He referenced the partition of 1947, stating that while many have suffered, the people of Kashmir have paid the highest price.

The governor expressed that everyone, including the prime minister, desires peace in Jammu and Kashmir and wishes for the restoration of statehood.

“We cannot be complacent in thinking that trouble only arises in Kashmir. We are all concerned and desire normal conditions. As you pointed out (regarding statehood), this is the desire of everyone in India. The prime minister wants Kashmir to have the autonomy to decide for itself,” he said.

However, he added that normalcy must be established, “so that the situation here can also return to normal.”

“It is a collective effort between you and us to create conditions where the rule of law is upheld in the same manner in Kashmir as it is elsewhere,” he added.

In victory speech, Mamdani challenges Trump, who responded, ‘So it begins’

In victory speech, Mamdani challenges Trump, who responded, ‘So it begins’

New York, Nov 05: Zohran Mamdani threw a challenge to President Donald Trump on immigration, declaring that for his enforcement campaign “to get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us”.

A city led by an immigrant will always be welcoming to immigrants, he told a delirious crowd of supporters who packed a theatre in Brooklyn.

Addressing the US President who he said must be watching his speech, he said defiantly, “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I’ve got four words for you: Turn the volume up”.

As if taking up the challenge, President Trump posed an ominous four-word message on Truth Social, “…AND SO IT BEGINS”!

President Trump, who described the Democratic Socialist as a “Communist” said in an election-eve post that New York City will be “a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster” if Mamdani wins.

President Trump threatened to cut federal funds for the city.

Casting his victory as a model of a “brave new course” for the country, Mamdani said, “No longer will we have to open a history book for proof that Democrats can dare to be great.”

He reiterated his campaign promise to tackle the city’s affordability crisis through free fast buses, childcare for all, freeze on rents on some residences, and more and better public housing.

Every New Yorker will feel the impact of the change he was about to bring, he added.

About the hard work of fulfilling those promises, he said, “A great New Yorker once said that, while you campaign in poetry, you govern in prose”.

That was a quote by the legendary Governor Mario Cuomo, who happens to be the father of Andrew Cuomo, whom Mamdani defeated in the mayoral race and wanted to needle.

And he added, “If that must be true, let the prose we write still rhyme and let us build a shining city for all”.

“In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light”, he said.

On the stage were his mother, movie director Mira Nair, and father Mahmood Mamdani, the Ugandan academic with roots in India.

Addressing what were some of the criticisms he faced, the 34-year-old said, “I am young, despite my best efforts to grow older. I am Muslim. I am a Democratic Socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologise for any of this”.

He has faced accusations of anti-Semitism in the way he led the anti-Israel protests. and in a conciliatory gesture, he said, “We will build a City Hall that stands steadfast alongside Jewish New Yorkers and does not waver in the fight against the scourge of anti-semitism”.

He added that it will also be “where the more than 1 million Muslims know that they belong, not just in the five boroughs of this city, but in the halls of power”.

“No more will New York be a city where you can traffic in Islamophobia and win an election”, he said.

Cuomo, in his concession speech, congratulated Mamdani and said he wanted to see him succeed for the sake of the “greatest city in world”.

That was met by boos from his supporters, and he tried to silence them saying, “That is not us”.

The other candidate whom Mamdani defeated, Republican Curtis Sliwa said in his concession speech, “Obviously, I wish him good luck, because if he does well, we do well”.

However, the founder of a vigilante group also held out a threat that if Mamdani implements socialism or weakens the police and endangers public safety, he would become “the worst enemy”.

Waheed Para questions govt over revival of social media monitoring policy

Srinagar, Nov 05: PDP leader and MLA Waheed Ur Rehman Para on Wednesday said that the Jammu and Kashmir government’s decision to reintroduce social media monitoring orders goes against the purpose of the recent elections.

In a post on X, as per KNS Para said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir had voted to end silence and fear, not to face renewed restrictions on speech. He said the decision to monitor social media activities only in J&K raised questions about fairness and intent.

“The people voted for dignity and the freedom to speak. Yet new directions have been issued to track and limit online activities, and such orders are not being enforced in any other part of the country,” Para wrote.

He asked the Chief Minister to clarify the government’s position, pointing out that the CM also holds the Information Department portfolio. “It is important to know what the Chief Minister thinks about these new measures,” he said.

Para said that the use of “vigilance” and “monitoring” under administrative directives was being turned into a tool to restrict journalists and silence voices. He said that these actions go against the idea of open governance and the trust that elections were meant to restore.

Calling for openness in governance, Para said that Jammu and Kashmir needs transparency and accountability. He said that the elections were meant to restore confidence among people, not to create another form of silence.(KNS)
