RBI's gold reserves cross 880 metric tonnes by September

New Delhi, Oct 22: The Reserve Bank’s gold reserves crossed 880 metric tonnes in the first half of 2025-26 with the central bank adding 0.2 metric tonnes in the last week of September.

The total value of the gold was USD 95 billion as of September 26, 2025, according to the latest data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The demand for gold, considered a safe haven, has been on the rise in recent months amid escalating global uncertainties. In the six months ended September, the RBI bought 0.6 metric tonnes (600 kilograms) of gold. A total of 0.2 metric tonnes (200 kg) and 0.4 metric tonnes (400 kg) of the yellow metal were bought in September and June, respectively, as per the latest RBI Bulletin.

The total gold reserve with the RBI increased to 880.18 metric tonnes at September-end from 879.58 metric tonnes at the end of 2024-25. During 2024-25, the RBI had added 54.13 metric tonnes of gold.

Rise in international gold prices, driven by heightened global economic and geopolitical uncertainty that encouraged safe haven buying and sustained demand for gold as a financial asset by central banks and investors, drove domestic price increases, the bulletin said. Globally, the bulletin also said central banks added 166 tonnes of gold to official reserves, further boosting its demand. Gold prices remained elevated in the third quarter, surging to all-time high in September.

IAF chopper carrying Prez Murmu gets stuck in wet helipad in Kerala; police deny 'security lapse'

Pathanamthitta (Kerala), Oct 22: An alleged security lapse surfaced on Wednesday after an Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter carrying President Droupadi Murmu to Sabarimala got its wheels stuck in wet concrete at a swiftly built temporary helipad inside an indoor stadium complex near here, prompting officials to push the chopper out.

The incident in Pramadam, Pathanamthitta, occurred shortly after the President alighted, even as the state’s top police official denied any compromise to the security protocol.

According to reports, the helicopter landed at the temporary helipad constructed inside the indoor stadium complex at Pramadam, where the concrete surface had not completely dried.

The wheels reportedly sank into the wet concrete soon after President Murmu alighted from the aircraft.

Kerala Director General of Police (DGP) Ravada A. Chandrasekhar clarified there was no security lapse and stated that the helicopter landed approximately five feet from the designated landing spot, which was still wet, according to a local media report.

“The helicopter landed at the wet place, about 5 feet from the previously decided landing place in the temporary helipad. So it could not proceed further as the wheels were stuck in the concrete. It was then pushed to the safe area for take-off,” the report said, quoting the DGP.

Pathanamthitta District Collector Prem Krishnan S. also stated that there was no breach in security.

A video footage, which brought the matter to public attention, showed about 30 police personnel deployed for the President’s security pushing the helicopter out of the wet portion of the helipad, raising questions about possible lapses in protocol.

The President proceeded with her scheduled visit to the hill shrine following the incident.

Reports suggest the temporary concrete helipad was built just 12 hours before the scheduled landing. State intelligence agencies had reportedly flagged concerns that the wheels could get stuck due to the wet surface and had suggested landing at about five feet from the wet surface, but the chopper landed on the wet concrete, said the reports.

As per official sources, two landing venues had been prepared for the President’s visit — one at Nilakkal near Sabarimala and another at the Pramadam indoor stadium. The helicopter could not land at Nilakkal due to poor weather and fog, and was diverted to Pramadam, about 50 km away.

Media reports also indicated confusion regarding the President’s itinerary. Initially, she was expected to travel by road from Thiruvananthapuram to Pampa, a distance of about 170 km, but the plan was changed early Wednesday morning to the aerial route.

Authorities are expected to review the incident, and action may be taken against officials found responsible for the poor preparation of the helipad, said the reports.

Tanvir Sadiq opposes Ashoka Emblem at Hazratbal, calls it against Islamic belief

Srinagar, Oct 22: National Conference legislator Tanvir Sadiq on Wednesday said that the statement of the Leader of Opposition has vindicated the NC’s consistent stand that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will never form any government with the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir.

Reacting to BJP leader Sunil Sharma’s recent statement categorically ruling out any alliance with the National Conference, Sadiq said the clarification has put an end to all speculations and conspiracy theories regarding a possible understanding between the two parties.

“Sunil Sharma’s statement has ended all conspiracy theories. There should be no further debate or doubt on the matter. It is now absolutely clear that there is no political understanding between the NC and BJP,” Sadiq said.

The NC lawmaker further said that the bill on land grants he tabled in the Assembly was aimed purely at protecting public interest. “The bill I introduced is for the people. We want the Land Grants Act of 1960, which was altered in 2022, to be revived in its original form,” he remarked.

Talking about the alliance with Congress, Sadiq said there are no differences between the two parties. “Our coordination and understanding with the Congress remain intact and focused on the larger goals of serving the people,” he added. [KNT]

Air India’s US-bound flight returns to Mumbai due to technical snag

Now, Air India cancels Delhi-Paris flight due to an ‘issue’

Mumbai, Oct 22: An Air India flight scheduled from Mumbai to Newark in the United States had to return after take-off, as the crew identified a suspected technical snag, according to a statement issued by the airline on Wednesday.

“The crew of flight AI191 operating from Mumbai to Newark on 22 October, made a precautionary air-return to Mumbai due to a suspected technical issue. The flight landed safely back in Mumbai, and the aircraft is undergoing necessary inspections,” according to an Air India statement.

The total number of passengers on board, along with the time at which the airline departed and returned, was not available in the preliminary statement. As per the usual schedule, the AI191 flight departs at 01:10 hours (IST) from Mumbai and reaches Newark at 07:55 hours (EDT).

Due to the flight’s cancellation, the return flight from Newark to Mumbai — numbered AI144 — was also cancelled.

The incident comes close on the heels of Delhi-bound Air India plane running into a technical snag at the Milan airport last Friday, stranding over 250 passengers at the foreign airport just ahead of Diwali.

The airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner (VT-ANN) had encountered a technical issue upon landing in Milan, preventing the aircraft from operating the return journey to Delhi.

Air India then scheduled an additional flight from Milan to Delhi on Oct 19 to bring back home 256 passengers who were stranded in Milan since, October 17.

The airline claimed it had extended all immediate assistance to affected passengers, including hotel accommodation and meals. Full refunds or complimentary rescheduling were also offered as per passenger preference.

A similar incident occurred on August 16 this year, when an Air India flight on the same route was cancelled due to a technical issue that was notices during pushback.

According to Air India, a maintenance task was identified just as the aircraft was preparing for departure. The subsequent delay caused the operating crew to exceed mandatory flight duty time limitation norms, making it unsafe and impermissible for them to continue.
