PM Modi’s tough stand on terror in J&K unmatched: Amit Shah

Every terror attack from Uri to Pahalgam given befitting reply: Amit Shah

Srinagar, Oct 17: Asserting that India now responds to terror threats with unprecedented resolve and strength, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said the PM Modi-led government’s action against terrorism in J&K is unlike anything seen in decades.

Addressing a public rally in Taraiya, Bihar, Shah, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said, “During the Congress rule, terrorists played ‘khoon ki holi’ (blood-soaked Holi) across India. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we entered their homes and wiped them out through ‘Operation Sindoor.’

He said that terrorists involved in the Pahalgam terror attack were brought to justice under ‘Operation Mahadev,’ and their handlers were also targeted inside Pakistan. “The way Modi ji responded to terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, no one did in the past several decades,” he added.

Highlighting the government’s achievements, the Home Minister said the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir was a historic decision that permanently integrated the region with the rest of the country. “From removing Article 370 to fighting terrorism, we have acted on every front. When terrorists tried to rise again, we launched Operation Sindoor and taught them a lesson in their own homes,” Shah said.

He said the government ended the practice of triple talaq, giving justice to Muslim women, and after 350 years fulfilled the long-standing promise of building the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Shah also accused opposition parties of misleading people with “unrealistic promises” and reviving what he described as the politics of corruption and fear.

He said the regime led by PM Modi remains focussed on development, welfare, and national security.

“The Indian economy is now among the fastest-growing in the world, inflation is under control, and the country’s global standing has strengthened,” he said, adding that the government’s vision is to build a self-reliant and secure nation rooted in cultural values.

Calling for public vigilance, Shah urged citizens to stay alert against those who seek to derail progress. “Only a stable government can ensure continuity of development and the safety of the nation,” he said.

The Home Minister also launched a sharp attack on Lalu Prasad Yadav, the RJD, and the INDI Alliance, recalling the “jungle raj” era in Bihar marked by corruption and lawlessness. Expressing confidence, Shah said the NDA would return to power in Bihar with the largest majority in two decades.

He also paid tribute to late BJP leader Brijmohan Ji, and remembered Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan and Bhikhari Thakur, calling them symbols of Bihar’s political and cultural pride.

Returning Officer sends ballot to Kathua jail for AAP MLA Mehraj Malik

FIR registered against JK AAP chief over criminal intimidation of woman doctor

Srinagar, Oct 17: The Returning Officer for the Rajya Sabha polls has sent postal ballot papers to the Superintendent of District Jail Kathua, where Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Mehraj Malik is detained under the Public Safety Act, 1978, to enable him to cast his vote.

Sources told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that Secretary of the Legislative Assembly, Manoj Pandita-who is serving as the Returning Officer for the polls-has dispatched the ballot papers via post to Malik so that he can participate in the election. “Three ballot papers have been sent because every MLA is entitled to cast three votes in the election,” they said, adding that the ballot papers were sent in a sealed cover.

The Jail Superintendent is also required to sign a declaration to verify Malik’s identity.

As per the rules, Malik can cast his vote before the scheduled polling date on October 24.

The Representation of the People Act, 1951 permits detainees to exercise their voting rights but disallows voting rights to undertrials and convicts lodged in jails. Since Mehraj Malik is currently detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA), he has been provided the postal ballot facility.

According to sub-section (5) of Section 62 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, individuals confined in prison-whether serving a sentence of imprisonment, undergoing transportation, or held in police custody-are not entitled to vote. However, the proviso to this sub-section clarifies that the restriction does not apply to individuals subjected to preventive detention under any law currently in force.

This legal provision makes it unambiguously clear that persons under preventive detention retain their right to vote in all elections.

After the announcement of the Rajya Sabha polls, the Election Commission had written to the Jammu & Kashmir administration seeking details of detained elector(s) for the Rajya Sabha elections, along with information about the prison(s) where they are lodged. “The J&K administration submitted details of Malik to the Returning Officer for the polls,” they added.

New Delhi, Oct 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday asserted that India now does not remain silent after terror attacks but hits back using surgical and air strikes.

Gold futures hit record Rs 1.32 lakh/10g amid global worries, Fed easing hopes

Gold declines Rs 600 to Rs 99,020 per 10 g; silver plunges Rs 1,000

New Delhi, Oct 17: Gold prices surged by Rs 2,442 to touch an all-time high of Rs 1,32,294 per 10 grams in the domestic futures trade on Friday, driven by safe-haven demand as investors weighed deepening global economic uncertainties and expectations of monetary easing by the US Federal Reserve.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), the yellow metal futures for December delivery increased by Rs 2,442, or 1.88 per cent, to hit a lifetime high of Rs 1,32,294 per 10 grams.

Similarly, the February 2026 contract for gold futures rallied by Rs 2,927, or 2.23 per cent, to hit a fresh peak of Rs 1,34,024 per 10 grams, marking its sixth straight session of gains.

“Gold prices continue to surge, reaching new record highs as concerns about a potential credit crisis in the US outweigh optimism over a likely improvement in US-Russia relations. A weaker US dollar and expectations of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve are also supporting the rally,” Darshan Desai, Chief Executive Officer of Aspect Bullion & Refinery, said.

Silver too joined the rally, scaling fresh peaks on the MCX. The white metal for December delivery jumped by Rs 2,752, or 1.64 per cent, to hit a record of Rs 1,70,415 per kilogram.

The March 2026 contract for silver extended gains for the fifth straight session, by bouncing Rs 3,274, or 1.93 per cent, to reach an all-time high of Rs 1,72,350 per kg on the commodities bourse.

In the international markets, Comex futures surged sharply as well. The yellow metal for December delivery gained USD 71.09, or 1.65 per cent, to USD 4,375.69 per ounce on Friday, after breaching the USD 4,300 per ounce level a day earlier. It later touched an intraday record high of USD 4,391.69 per ounce.

“Gold breached the USD 4,300 per ounce mark for the first time ever. The continuous flow of safe-haven buying and strong technical momentum are driving both metals higher. The sustained bullish sentiment has sidelined market bears, highlighting the strong upward bias in both metals,” said Rahul Kalantri, Vice-President of Commodities at Mehta Equities Ltd.

Jigar Trivedi, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities, said, “The yellow metal is on track for a sharp weekly advance, the strongest in the current nine-week rally, as investors sought safety amid heightened economic uncertainties.”

On the other hand, Comex silver futures for December delivery traded marginally higher at USD 53.38 per ounce, after hitting a record of USD 53.76 per ounce in the previous market session.

Trivedi added that bullion repeatedly hit new highs this week, driven by renewed US-China trade tensions and concerns over the ongoing US government shutdown.

“The precious metal was further supported by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s recent remarks, which pointed to signs of a weakening labour market, leading investors to nearly fully price in a 25 basis points cut later this month, with another likely in December.

“Gold has now surged more than 65 per cent so far this year, bolstered by central bank purchases, exchange traded fund (ETF) inflows, and strong demand for safe assets,” he added.

Our aim is to take domestic defence production to 100 per cent: Rajnath

"Op Sindoor led to increase in demand for our Indigenous defence products": Rajnath Singh

Nashik (Maha), Oct 17: India is looking at taking domestic defence production to 100 per cent as dependence on foreign military supplies creates “strategic vulnerability”, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Friday.

Singh said this after inaugurating a third production line of Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)-Mk1A and a second manufacturing facility of trainer jet HTT-40.

With opening of the new facility for Tejas jets, the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) is expected to produce at least 24 LCA aircraft.

“There was a time when the country was dependent on other countries to meet its defence needs, and almost 65-70 percent of defence equipment was imported,” Singh said in his address

“But today, this situation has changed; now India is doing 65 per cent manufacturing on its own soil,” he said.

“Very soon, we will take our domestic manufacturing to 100 per cent as well,” he said.

Singh said India’s defence export has reached a record Rs 25,000 crore which was less than Rs 1,000 crore few years ago.

“We have now set a target to achieve Rs three lakh crore in domestic defence manufacturing and Rs 50,000 crore in defence exports by 2029,” he said.

New Delhi, Oct 17: Infrastructure company Ganesh Infraworld will begin work on two water and sewerage treatment projects worth Rs 105.77 crore in Jammu & Kashmir from December 2025, its Managing Director Vibhoar Agrawal said.

The projects form part of the government’s larger effort to modernise water management and sewage infrastructure in the Union Territory, particularly in the Srinagar–Budgam region, which has witnessed rapid urban expansion and rising pollution levels in local water bodies.

“We are waiting for certain approvals, expected anytime from now, and look to begin work on the two water and sewerage treatment projects from December this year,” Agrawal said in an interaction.

The work order involves complete survey, design, and construction of modern sewerage treatment plants along the Doodh-Ganga Nallah on a turnkey basis, including five years of operations and maintenance, he said, adding it will be a crucial step in restoring the ecological health of one of J&K’s key tributaries while addressing long-standing civic challenges related to wastewater management.

The two projects include the construction of treatment facilities covering the Baghi-Mehtab to Allochi Bagh stretch, valued at Rs 44.07 crore, and another between Chadoora and Baghi-Mehtab, worth Rs 61.70 crore.

On the challenges, he said, “The terrain presents logistical and climatic challenges, but it is also one of the most sensitive and important regions from an infrastructure standpoint.”
