Apple demand picks up after month-long slump, prices rise by 30%

‘Facing toughest season’: Apple growers struggle as cold storage slots booked, freight costs soar

Srinagar, Oct 14: After facing over a month of sluggish demand and falling prices, apple growers in Kashmir are finally witnessing some relief as rates have started to climb.

According to traders and farmers, the demand for Kashmiri apples has improved over the past week, pushing prices up by nearly 30 per cent.

Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Bashir Ahmad Basheer, president of the Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union, said the turnaround has brought a glimmer of hope to the community after weeks of distress.

“The rates have started going up as demand has increased in various markets outside Kashmir. We expect prices to improve further in the coming days, which could help growers recover at least part of the losses they suffered earlier,” he said.

Basheer added that the government’s “indifference” towards the crisis faced by orchardists has deepened their financial woes.

“A majority of the growers have already suffered heavy losses this season due to low demand, poor rates, highway closure, freight rise and other issues. Unfortunately, the government has so far failed to provide any compensation or relief,” he said.

Local farmers echoed similar concerns, expressing cautious optimism about the current rise in rates but warning that recovery may still take time.

Abdul Rashid, an apple grower from Shopian, said that the last month was “one of the worst” in recent years.

“We were forced to sell apples at throwaway prices. The rates were so low that they didn’t even cover transport and packaging costs. Now, with the demand improving, we are hopeful the next few weeks will be better,” he said.

Another grower, Mohammad Yousuf from Sopore, said many farmers had to delay sales in the hope of better prices. “Those who stored their apples are now in a better position as the market has started responding. If the demand continues to rise, it could bring some relief to us,” he said.

Traders in the other fruit mandis also confirmed an uptick in market activity. They said demand from many Indian states has improved slightly due to festive season needs, leading to higher prices for A- and B-grade apples.

Experts believe the next few weeks will be crucial for the fruit market, as consistent demand could stabilise rates and help offset the losses growers incurred earlier in the season.

Meanwhile, farmers have reiterated their appeal to the government for compensation and support, saying the horticulture sector—one of the backbones of Kashmir’s economy—needs urgent attention to prevent long-term distress.

More than 1 in 3 people worldwide live with brain disorders, 11 million die annually: Report

Study finds genetic link for rare childhood brain developmental disorder

New Delhi, Oct 14: One in three people worldwide is living with conditions that affect their brain, while 11 million lives are lost every year due to neurological disorders, according to a new report by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday.

Stroke, neonatal encephalopathy, migraine, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, diabetic neuropathy, meningitis, idiopathic epilepsy, neurological complications linked to preterm birth, autism spectrum disorders, and cancers of the nervous system were identified as the top 10 neurological conditions contributing to death and disability.

The report stated that while these neurological conditions now affect more than 40 per cent of the global population, less than one in three countries around the world has a national policy to address the growing burden of neurological disorders.

Alarmingly, low-income countries have more than 80 times fewer neurologists compared to high-income nations despite the high burden of these diseases.

Many low- and middle-income countries also lack national plans, budgets, and workforce.

“With more than 1 in 3 people in the world living with conditions affecting their brain, we must do all we can to improve the health care they need,” said Dr Jeremy Farrar, WHO Assistant Director-General, Division of Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Control.

“Many of these neurological conditions can be prevented or effectively treated, yet services remain out of reach for most – especially in rural and underserved areas – where people too often face stigma, social exclusion, and financial hardship. We must work together to ensure we put patients and their families first and that brain health is prioritised and properly invested in,” Farrar said.

The report, based on data from 102 countries, showed that 63 countries have a national policy addressing neurological disorders, but only 34 reported having dedicated funding to address them.

Without strong policy frameworks, health systems remain fragmented, under-resourced, and ill-equipped to meet the needs of patients and families.

Further, essential services were also found out of reach for most people, with only 49 countries including neurological disorders in their universal health coverage benefit packages.

Critical services such as stroke units, pediatric neurology, rehabilitation, and palliative care are frequently lacking or concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural and underserved populations without access to lifesaving and life-sustaining care.

The WHO has urged governments to make neurological disorders a policy priority through bold leadership and sustained investment; expand access to neurological care through universal health coverage and health system strengthening.

After Operation Sindoor, no place safe for terrorists: Amit Shah

Shah orders chiefs of paramilitary forces to call back their personnel who are on leave: Sources

Manesar, Oct 14: Operation Sindoor ensured the devastation of headquarters, training centres and launchpads of terrorist groups in Pakistan, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday, asserting that no place is safe for terrorists anymore.

Addressing the 41st Raising Day of the anti-terror ‘Black Cat’ commando force National Security Guard (NSG) at its headquarters here, Shah also said the Indian security forces are resolutely determined to go to the depths of the Earth to punish every act of terror.

“Operation Sindoor has ensured the devastation of Pakistani terror headquarters, their training centres and launchpads… In Operation Mahadev, our security forces carried out precise action to eliminate the terrorists who carried out the terror attack in Pahalgam. It has further strengthened the confidence of the citizens in the security forces,” he said.

Under Operation Sindoor, the Indian defence forces targeted terror infrastructure and defence installations in Pakistan in May, following an attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed 26 lives.

The home minister said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism.

If one analyses the government’s campaign against terrorists carefully, from abolishing Article 370 (which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir) to surgical strike, air strike and Operation Sindoor, it will become clear that the security forces have hit at the very roots of terrorists and terror groups, Shah said.

“No matter where terrorists hide, our security forces have proven that no place is safe for terrorists anymore. Our soldiers are resolutely determined to go to the depths of the Earth to punish every act of terror,” he said.

Since 2019, he said, the central government has taken a number of steps to protect the country from terror threats.

These include amendments to Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and National Investigation Agency Act, besides actively pursuing cases registered under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act by the Enforcement Directorate to investigate the funding of terror groups, he added.

Shah said the government has also established a system for scientific investigation of terror funding, banned the terror group Popular Front of India, and strengthened the Multi Agency Centre for gathering and sharing intelligence inputs on terror groups across the country.

“For the first time, we have defined terrorism in the new criminal laws and filled the gaps previously found in the courts. So far, we have declared more than 57 individuals and numerous organisations as unlawful,” he said.

Over the years, he said, the NSG has fought a very significant battle against organised crime and terrorism in the country.

The NSG has protected the nation with its bravery in several serious attacks since 1984. These include Operation Ashwamedh, Operation Vajra Shakti and Operation Dhangu Suraksha, he said.

“Seeing the bravery of the NSG, every citizen of the country feels that the security of the nation is in very safe hands. The entire country takes pride in the bravery of the NSG. I extend my very best wishes to NSG soldiers for this,” Shah said.

The NSG is a federal contingency force under the Union home ministry. It was raised in 1984 and its ‘Black Cat’ commandos are tasked with specific counter-terrorist and counter-hijack operations, apart from protecting high-risk VIPs.

Shah said the government is going to set up a hub of the NSG — the sixth of the force — in the temple town of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.

The five existing NSG hubs are Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Gandhinagar.

The home minister also laid the foundation stone of a special operation training centre of the NSG which will be constructed at a cost of Rs 141 crore in an area spanning 8 acres.

This state-of-the-art training centre will not only be for the NSG, but will also train personnel of anti-terrorist squads from across the country. This will further strengthen the country’s fight against terrorism, Shah said.

CM Omar Abdullah calls for enhanced value-addition in agriculture, highlights J&K’s industrial, tourism potential

Srinagar, Oct 14: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said that the agriculture sector in Jammu and Kashmir holds immense potential and requires focused attention towards value addition to unlock full gamut of business opportunities across Jammu and Kashmir.

The Chief Minister made these remarks while addressing the National Executive Committee Meeting of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) held in Srinagar.
The meeting was attended by FICCI President Harsh Vardhan Agarwal, Senior Vice President Anant Goenka, Director General FICCI Jyoti Vij, Past President Dr. Jyotsna Suri, Chairman FICCI J&K Council Mushtaq A. Burza, and members of the National Executive Council.

Highlighting the immense potential of the agriculture sector, the Chief Minister said that most of the produce from Jammu and Kashmir leaves the region in its raw form, with very little processing or value addition being done locally.

“This opens significant opportunities for industrial growth, both on Jammu side and Kashmir’s side,” he stated.

Citing the dairy sector as an example, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that only about 4–5 percent of the J&K’s dairy production is processed within Jammu & Kashmir, while the rest goes unprocessed into the market. He urged industry leaders to explore these areas for investment and growth.

Referring to the broader economic scenario, the Chief Minister said that the J&K has faced challenges due to recent natural calamities and the downturn in tourism following the Pahalgam incident, but the administration remains optimistic about revival across sectors.

“This is not a story of pessimism but of hope and optimism. We are working hard with all stakeholders to put the economy back on track,” he said.

The Chief Minister informed that the government is simultaneously engaging with domestic and international tourism partners to attract visitors and revive the sector. “Jammu and Kashmir has always been the country’s premier destination and we are determined to sustain that legacy,” he added.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also outlined the areas where the government is focusing on sustainable and competitive industrial growth, including agriculture, horticulture, handicrafts, electronics, pharmaceuticals, packaging and cement. He said that new road-connectivity projects such as the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway and four-laning of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway will further enhance logistics and investment potential.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to improving the ease of doing business, the Chief Minister invited FICCI’s inputs on policy reforms to make J&K more investor-friendly.

“We are keen to learn from best practices across the country. Reforms will be guided by feedback from the industry itself,” he said.

The Chief Minister also called upon the corporate sector to support Jammu and Kashmir through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in youth-centric areas such as sports infrastructure, libraries and skill upgradation. He urged companies to partner with the government in upgrading Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and skill centres to create an employable local workforce.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed the strong partnership between Jammu and Kashmir and FICCI and expressed hope that renewed engagement will yield tangible results for J&K’s economic growth.
“This is a long-standing relationship and today’s meeting marks another step towards strengthening cooperation and building new opportunities for the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.

Supreme Court adjourns hearing on plea against Sonam Wangchuk’s detention under NSA

SC to hear on July 24 Maharashtra govt’s plea against Bombay HC verdict SC-Train blast

New Delhi, Oct 14: The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned to Wednesday the hearing of a petition filed by Gitanjali J. Angmo, wife of noted climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) and seeking his immediate release.

A bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria deferred the hearing, citing a lack of time, and posted the matter for consideration on October 15, 2025.

The court had earlier, on October 6, issued notices to the Union Government and the Union Territory of Ladakh administration over the plea but declined to direct the authorities to furnish the grounds of detention at that stage. The matter was subsequently listed for October 14.

Wangchuk, a globally recognized environmentalist and Ramon Magsaysay Award nominee, was detained on September 26 under the stringent NSA, two days after large-scale protests in Ladakh demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status turned violent, leaving four people dead and at least 90 injured.

Authorities have accused Wangchuk of instigating the unrest and spreading inflammatory material during the demonstrations. However, his wife has strongly refuted the charges, calling his detention “a blatant misuse of preventive law against a peaceful campaigner.”

The Supreme Court is expected to take up the matter for detailed hearing on Wednesday, where the government is likely to present its justification for invoking the NSA against the activist. [KNT]

WHO issues alert against substandard oral cough syrups in India

WHO issues alert against substandard oral cough syrups in India

New Delhi, Oct 14: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued an alert against three “substandard” oral cough syrups identified in India — Coldrif, Respifresh TR and ReLife — and urged national regulatory authorities worldwide to immediately notify it if these are detected in their country.

It has also advised healthcare professionals to report the detection of these substandard products and any incident of adverse effects, or lack of expected effects to their national regulatory authorities or National Pharmacovigilance Centre.

The alert comes after at least 22 children, mostly under the age of five, have died due to suspected kidney failure after being administered Coldrif in Madhya Pradesh. Besides, at least three children have allegedly died in Rajasthan after consuming cough syrup in different districts of the state.

The WHO has further called for increased surveillance and diligence within the supply chains of countries and regions likely to be affected by these substandard products.

“Increased surveillance of the informal/unregulated market is also advised,” the alert issued on Monday said.

The affected products are oral liquid medicines containing active ingredients commonly used to relieve symptoms of common cold, flu, or cough

According to the alert, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) of India reported to WHO the presence of Diethylene Glycol (DEG) in at least three oral liquid medicines in October 8. This followed information identified by WHO on September 30 of localised clusters of acute illness and child fatalities in India.

The CDSCO informed WHO that the contaminated products were reportedly consumed by the affected children and confirmed that relevant state authorities have ordered an immediate halt to production at implicated manufacturing sites and have suspended product authorisations.

In addition, a recall of the contaminated products has been initiated by relevant state authorities.

The contaminated oral liquid medicines have been identified to be specific batches of Coldrif, Respifresh TR and ReLife, manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceutical, Rednex Pharmaceuticals, and Shape Pharma, the alert said.

The alert stated the CDSCO has informed WHO that none of the contaminated medicines have been exported from India and there is currently no evidence of illegal export.

“Nevertheless, WHO encourages National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) to consider targeted market surveillance, with particular attention to informal and unregulated supply chains where products may circulate undetected. NRAs are also advised to carefully evaluate risks associated with any oral liquid medicines originating from the same manufacturing sites- particularly those produced since December 2024,” the alert stated.

The products identified in this alert are considered substandard as they fail to meet their quality standards and their specifications. These contaminated products pose significant risks to patients and can cause severe and potentially life-threatening illness, the global health agency said.

Diethylene glycol is toxic to humans when consumed and can prove fatal. The contaminated oral liquid medicines referenced in this alert are unsafe and their use, especially in children, may result in serious injury or death. Toxic effects can include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state and acute kidney injury which may lead to death.

To protect patients, it is essential to detect and remove these contaminated products from circulation, the alert said.

“Healthcare professionals should report the detection of these substandard products and any incident of adverse effects, or lack of expected effects to their National Regulatory Authorities or National Pharmacovigilance Centre. The WHO advises increased surveillance and diligence within the supply chains of countries and regions likely to be affected by these substandard products. Increased surveillance of the informal/unregulated market is also advised.

National regulatory authorities and law enforcement authorities are advised to immediately notify the WHO if these products are detected in their country,” the alert stated.

“If you are in possession of any of these products, WHO recommends that you do not use them. If you, or someone you know, has, or may have, used these products, or suffered an adverse event or unexpected side-effect after use, seek immediate medical advice from a health-care professional or contact a poisons control centre.,” it added.
