Police conduct inspection of vendors to curb misuse of SIM cards in Baramulla

Srinagar, Oct 10: As part of its ongoing efforts to curb the misuse of SIM cards and to ensure strict compliance with telecom verification norms, Jammu and Kashmir Police in Baramulla carried out a thorough inspection of SIM vendor outlets falling under the jurisdiction of Police Station Pattan and Police Posts Kongamdara, Mirgund and Wussan.

An official said that during the inspection, the teams checked the verification process being followed by the vendors, including maintenance of customer records and adherence to biometric authentication procedures. Vendors were sensitized about the importance of strict observance of KYC guidelines and were advised to remove any deficiencies on priority.

The vendors were also cautioned that any violation of norms or negligence in record maintenance will invite strict legal action, official said.

Ceasefire takes effect in Gaza

Lack of essentials in Gaza leads to increase in preventable diseases: UN

New Delhi, Oct 10: A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has now come into effect after Israeli troops began withdrawing from parts of Gaza early morning, according to the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) quoted by BBC.

The IDF said its forces had repositioned “along the lines agreed under the Trump plan,” adding that troops would “continue to remove any immediate threat” even as the ceasefire holds.

The development follows the Israeli government’s approval of a ceasefire and hostage release deal with Hamas, which could mark a turning point in the two-year-old war. Under the agreement, Hamas has 72 hours to release all remaining Israeli hostages, while Israel will free hundreds of Palestinian detainees held in its prisons.

“We are at a momentous development,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared shortly after midnight BST, as confirmation came through that both sides had agreed to the plan.

BBC correspondents report that Israeli troops began pulling back overnight, taking up new positions within Gaza as part of the first phase of the deal. The IDF confirmed that the ceasefire had formally taken effect in the early hours.

The mood in Gaza, BBC reports, is a “mixture of hope and fear” as residents cautiously welcome what could be the end of one of the deadliest conflicts in recent years.

Once the agreement is fully implemented, aid convoys are expected to surge into Gaza, bringing urgently needed food, fuel, and medical supplies for more than two million displaced people.

The deal’s first phase — the withdrawal and the initial exchange of hostages and prisoners — is set to unfold over the next three days. However, analysts caution that major challenges remain, including future talks on Gaza’s political status, the possible return of the Palestinian Authority, and broader discussions over the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Meanwhile, US officials confirmed that 200 American troops have been deployed to Israel to assist in coordinating the ceasefire and aid logistics. Washington stressed that no US personnel would enter Gaza itself. BBC reports that international observers are watching closely to see whether the fragile truce will hold beyond the initial 72-hour window, paving the way for a longer-term peace arrangement.

Maria Corina Machado of Venezuela wins Nobel Peace Prize

Oslo, Oct 10: Opposition activist Maria Corina Machado of Venezuela has won the Nobel Peace Prize.

The former opposition presidential candidate in Venezuela was lauded for being a “key, unifying figure in a political opposition that was once deeply divided – an opposition that found common ground in the demand for free elections and representative government,” said Jorgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel committee.

Experts say the committee typically focuses on the durability of peace, the promotion of international fraternity and the quiet work of institutions that strengthen those goals.

Last year’s award went to Nihon Hidankyo, a grassroots movement of Japanese atomic bombing survivors who have worked for decades to maintain a taboo around the use of nuclear weapons.

The peace prize is the only one of the annual Nobel prizes to be awarded in Oslo, Norway.

Four of the other prizes have already been awarded in the Swedish capital, Stockholm this week — in medicine on Monday, physics on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday and literature on Thursday. The winner of the prize in economics will be announced on Monday.

Police raid residences of terrorist associates linked to banned organisations in Srinagar

Srinagar, Oct 10: In a major crackdown on terror networks and their support structures, Srinagar Police on Thursday carried out extensive raids across multiple locations in the city targeting the residences of terrorist associates and overground workers (OGWs) affiliated with proscribed organisations.

According to officials, the searches were conducted in connection with ongoing investigations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), as part of a sustained effort to dismantle the terror ecosystem and curb unlawful activities.

The coordinated operations were carried out across various parts of Srinagar, including Malabagh, Elahibagh, Hawal, Ikhrajpora, Lawaypora, and Hazratbal. Police said the raids targeted individuals suspected of facilitating, aiding, or abetting terror-related activities.

Among those whose residences were searched are: Najeeb Sakib Dar of Malabagh Ellahibagh, Owais Muneer Bhat of Alamdar Colony Dangarpora, Owais Ahmad Bhat of Tiploo Mohalla Anchar, Danish Ayoub Badoo of Sazgaripora Hawal, Umar Fayaz and Hashim Farooq of Ikhrajpora, Zahid Rashid Ganie of Methan, Rashid Lateef Bhat of Baghat Chowk Khalidabad, and several others from Dangerpora, Hazratbal, and Lal Bazar localities.

Police said the searches were conducted in accordance with legal procedures, in the presence of Executive Magistrates and independent witnesses, and under the supervision of senior officers of J&K Police.

“The objective was to seize incriminating material, including documents, digital devices, and other evidence relevant to ongoing investigations,” a senior officer said, adding that the operation also forms part of a wider intelligence-gathering initiative to pre-empt and disrupt any conspiratorial or terror-linked activities.

The Srinagar Police reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the city, warning that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found involved in supporting or promoting anti national or terror-related activities.

“Such drives will continue to ensure that those aiding the terror ecosystem are identified and brought to justice,” an official added.

EAM Jaishankar announces upgrading of India’s mission in Kabul to full-fledged Embassy

New Delhi, Oct 10: External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Thursday welcomed Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi to New Delhi, marking the first-ever visit by a senior Taliban leader to India since the group took power in August 2021. The meeting signaled a new chapter in India-Afghanistan engagement, with Jaishankar announcing the upgrading of India’s Technical Mission in Kabul to a full-fledged Embassy.

In his opening remarks at Hyderabad House, Jaishankar described the visit as “an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan.”
“Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan,” Jaishankar told Muttaqi.

He noted that while the two leaders had spoken previously — once after the Pahalgam terrorist attack and again following the Kunar and Nangarhar earthquake — an in-person meeting provided “special value” in allowing both sides to “exchange perspectives, identify common interests, and forge closer cooperation.” Reaffirming India’s longstanding commitment to Afghanistan’s development, Jaishankar said: “As a contiguous neighbour and a well-wisher of the Afghan people, India has a deep interest in your development and progress. Our longstanding partnership that has seen so many Indian projects in Afghanistan stands renewed.”

The External Affairs Minister announced a series of new development and humanitarian initiatives for Afghanistan, including:

• Six new projects in health and infrastructure, details of which will be announced after bilateral talks.
• A gift of 20 ambulances, five of which Jaishankar personally handed over to Muttaqi as a “symbolic gesture of goodwill.”
• Supply of MRI and CT scan machines, vaccines, and cancer medicines for Afghan hospitals.
• Continued support for drug rehabilitation programmes through the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Jaishankar also underlined India’s role as a “first responder” in times of crisis, recalling how Indian relief teams rushed assistance to earthquake-hit areas in Afghanistan last month.

Govt cuts 307 House Physician posts, creates 121 Senior Resident posts; AIMSA terms move ‘unfair’

J&K Govt employees to get revised HRA, CCA

Srinagar, Oct 10: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has ordered the creation of 121 posts of Senior Residents and Tutors in Government Medical Colleges Srinagar and Jammu by abolishing 307 posts of House Physicians and House Surgeons, drawing criticism from the medical fraternity.

As per Government Order No. 663-JK (HME) of 2025, issued by the Health and Medical Education Department, 54 posts of Senior Residents/Tutors have been created in GMC Srinagar by reducing 137 posts of House Physicians/House Surgeons. Similarly, 67 Senior Resident/Tutor posts have been created in GMC Jammu by reducing 170 such posts.

The order, issued by Dr. Syed Abid Rasheed Shah, Secretary to the Government, follows the Council of Ministers’ decision dated September 23, 2025.

However, the move has sparked strong opposition from medical students. Reacting to the development, All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) Vice President Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan termed the decision “really unfair.”

“The government has cut 307 House Physician posts to create 121 SR posts, a net loss of 186 jobs. This kills MBBS job opportunities,” Dr. Khan said.

He urged the administration to review the decision, saying it would adversely impact hundreds of MBBS graduates awaiting short-term postings and clinical experience in government hospitals. [KNT]

Body of second missing soldier recovered in Kokernag

Anti-insurgency operation continues for fourth day in south Kashmir's Kulgam

Srinagar, Oct 10: Joint teams of security forces on Friday recovered the body of a second missing Army commando from the dense Gadool forests of Kokernag in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, where a massive search operation has been underway for the past four days.

Officials confirmed that the body was found during an intensified combing operation in the rugged and densely forested area — the centre of one of the most challenging manhunts in recent times.

The recovery comes a day after the body of another elite paratrooper from the Army’s 7 Para (Special Forces) unit was retrieved from the same forested zone. Both commandos had gone missing during an anti-terror operation launched following credible intelligence inputs about the presence of foreign terrorists in the area.

Trump has claimed that he stopped Op Sindoor using trade 50 times now: Congress

Congress slams PM’s silence as Trump takes credit 13 times for India-Pak ceasefire deal

New Delhi, Oct 10: Taking a swipe at the Modi government, the Congress on Friday said US President Donald Trump has “reached the half-century mark” on his claim that he stopped Operation Sindoor using trade and tariffs as his “brahmastra”, and added that it won’t be long before “he scores a century”.

Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi spent all day yesterday talking to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and sending “message after message of praise and admiration to President Trump.”

“He did not, of course, forget to speak to the man who had unleashed the genocide on Gaza – the Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu – also during this time,” he said in a post on X.

But President Trump, during his meeting with President Alexander Stubb of Finland on Thursday, “reached the half-century mark on his claim that he stopped Operation Sindoor using trade and tariffs as his brahmastra”, Ramesh said.

“In this, President Trump has been consistent, insistent, and persistent. And it won’t be long before he scores a century,” the Congress leader said.

He also shared a video clip of Trump’s remarks claiming he stopped the India-Pakistan conflict.

Last month, in his address to world leaders from the UN podium last week, Trump had repeated his claim that he stopped the conflict between India and Pakistan.

India has been consistently maintaining that the understanding on cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations of the two militaries.

US Prez Trump says hours before Nobel Peace Prize announcement in Oslo

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

New Delhi, Oct 10: As the world waits with bated breath for the announcement of the winner of the most highly coveted of all the Nobel prizes, the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, US President Donald Trump, who has been gunning for the prestigious award, lashed out at former US President Barack Obama who had been honoured with the Peace Prize in the first eight months of his first term.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, President Trump said that though he had secured peace in Gaza and ended “eight wars”, he did not do it for an award.

“I don’t know what they’re going to do, really, but I know this: That nobody in history has solved eight wars in a period of nine months, and I’ve stopped eight wars. So that’s never happened before, but they’ll have to do what they do. Whatever they do is fine. I know this: I didn’t do it for that. I did it because I saved a lot of lives,” he said.

He also took a swipe at President Barrack Obama, who got the coveted Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, soon after taking charge of the top job in America and stated, “He got a prize for doing nothing… He got elected, and they gave it to Obama for doing absolutely nothing but destroying our country… Obama was not a good President.”

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize is much awaited as it has stirred intense speculation with President Trump emerging as a frontrunner and, also pushing for it aggressively. Several nations like Israel, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Thailand, Armenia and Cambodia, are said to have nominated the US President, crediting Trump with mediating several protracted conflicts.

Meanwhile, the world and especially all those who hope to make the cut, eagerly await the announcement of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize at 11:00 am (0900 GMT) in Oslo on Friday by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Significantly, the prestigious award has drawn 338 nominations this year, including 94 organisations and 244 people from different walks of life.

The official announcement will be made by Jorgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee, at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo.

The committee consists of Norwegian human rights advocate Jorgen Watne Frydnes, foreign policy scholar Asle Toje, former Acting Prime Minister of Norway Anne Enger, former Norwegian Minister of Education Kristin Clemet, and former Secretary of Foreign Affairs Gry Larsen.
