TB a curable disease, need to end stigma: DHSK

Srinagar, Sep 27: In a decisive step towards eliminating the stigma around Tuberculosis (TB), the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir, in collaboration with the College of Education, has launched a joint awareness and outreach program to educate communities about the curability of TB and the importance of early detection and treatment.

“TB is a very curable disease,” said the Director of Health Services, Kashmir, Dr Jehangir Bakshi said during the official launch of the initiative. “But the social stigma attached to it often delays diagnosis and treatment. To remove that stigma, we have to involve the community — and there is no one better than a teacher to lead that effort.”

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), this collaborative program aims to harness the influence of educators in shaping public perception. By empowering teachers with accurate knowledge about TB, the campaign hopes to create a ripple effect that reaches students, families, and wider communities.

Tuberculosis, a bacterial infection primarily affecting the lungs, is both preventable and treatable. With proper medication and adherence to treatment regimens, most TB patients recover fully. However, misconceptions and fear around the disease still persist, often leading to social ostracization of patients and reluctance to seek timely medical help.

According to health experts, stigma is one of the biggest barriers in India’s TB elimination efforts. People avoid getting tested or even discussing symptoms due to fear of being labelled, which can lead to late-stage diagnosis and further spread of the infection

The Director highlighted the unique role of educators in shaping social attitudes. “Teachers are trusted figures in every household. Their voice carries weight not just in classrooms but in the hearts of communities. By involving them, we are building a bridge between medical knowledge and public understanding.”

As part of the program, teacher training workshops, school-based awareness sessions, and community outreach events are being organized. These sessions will include interactive modules on TB symptoms, transmission, treatment, and the importance of empathy and support for patients.

The Health Department believes that eliminating TB is not just a medical challenge, but a social one. “This is not just about pills and diagnostics; it’s about people,” the Director said. “We need a community-driven approach where no one is afraid to seek help. That begins with changing mindsets — and education is our most powerful tool.”

This initiative comes as part of India’s larger commitment to eliminate TB by 2025, ahead of the global target.

EAM Jaishankar slams Pakistan at UNGA, calls it ‘epicentre of global terrorism’

"India looks for partners, not preachers": EAM Jaishankar's message to Europe at Arctic Forum

United Nations, Sep 27: India has confronted the challenge of terrorism since its independence, with a neighbour that is an “epicentre of global terrorism”, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday, in a sharp attack on Pakistan.

In his address to the General Debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Jaishankar delivered a strong message against terrorism, warning that those who condone nations that sponsor terror will find that it comes back to “bite them”.

He said that while asserting our rights, we must also firmly face up to threats, and added that countering terrorism is a particular priority because it “synthesises bigotry, violence, intolerance and fear”.

Jaishankar, who began his address to world leaders from the UNGA podium with the salutation “Namaskar from the people of Bharat,” said, “India has confronted this challenge since independence, having a neighbour that is an epicentre of global terrorism.”

While Jaishankar did not name Pakistan, reference to the country was loud and clear when he said that “for decades now, major international terrorist attacks are traced back to that one country.”

He added that the UN’s designated lists of terrorists are replete with the country’s nationals.

“The most recent example of cross-border barbarism was the murder of innocent tourists in Pahalgam in April this year. India exercised its right to defend its people against terrorism and brought its organisers and perpetrators to justice,” he said.

India had launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians and for which The Resistance Front (TRF), a front for Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), had claimed responsibility.

On Friday, exercising its Right of Reply to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s address to the UNGA, India said, “Till May 9, Pakistan was threatening more attacks on India. But on May 10, its military pleaded with us directly for a cessation to the fighting. The intervening event was the destruction caused to multiple Pakistani airbases by Indian forces.”

In his address, Jaishankar warned that those who condone nations that sponsor terror will find that it “comes back to bite them”.

Underlining that terrorism is a shared threat, he called for deeper international cooperation.

“When nations openly declare terrorism as state policy, when terror hubs operate on an industrial scale, when terrorists are publicly glorified, then such actions must be unequivocally condemned,” he said.

“The financing of terrorism must be choked, even as prominent terrorists are sanctioned. Relentless pressure must be applied on the entire terrorism eco-system,” he added.

The external affairs minister told world leaders from the UNGA podium that “Bharat approaches the contemporary world, guided by three key concepts of ‘Atmanirbharta’ or self-reliance, ‘Atmaraksha’ or securing oneself, and ‘Atmavishwas’ or self-confidence.”

“We remain determined to protect our people and secure their interests, at home and abroad. That means zero-tolerance for terrorism, robust defence of our borders, forging partnerships beyond and assisting our community abroad,” he said.

LG Sinha summons J&K Legislative Assembly session on October 23

Jammu, Sep 27: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Saturday, summoned the (autumn) session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in Srinagar on October 23, 2025, at 10 am.

LG Sinha, through an order, has summoned the J&K Legislative Assembly to meet, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him under section 18(1) of the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019.

Accordingly, in terms of Rule 3 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, the Secretary J&K Legislative Assembly Secretariat, through a summon, asked all the Members (MLAs) to “attend the Session of the Legislative Assembly on the appointed date, time and place.”

On September 23, the J&K Council of Ministers, in its meeting presided over by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar, had recommended convening a week-long autumn session of the J&K legislature from October 13, 2025.

The recommendation was then sent to LG Sinha.

Immediately after the LG issued an order summoning the session, the J&K Legislative Assembly Secretariat, through a bulletin, asked the MLAs to submit notices of 10 starred and unstarred questions and one bill each by October 4, 2025, and two resolutions each by October 7, 2025.

“Members of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly are requested to send notice(s) of not more than five starred and five un-starred question in relaxation of Rule 32 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly by or before October 4, 2025, and not more than one Bill in relaxation of sub-rule (3) of Rule 65 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly by or before October 4,2025,” the bulletin read.

Similarly, the MLAs, in the bulletin, have been asked to send “not more than two Resolutions in terms of Rule 174, the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly by or before October 7, 2025.”

Now, the Speaker of, Legislative Assembly will list the calendar of business and sittings in the next two or three days.

The Business Advisory Committee may, later, tweak the calendar if some changes are warranted.

As per sources, the session is likely to last till October 31, with a provision of six to eight sittings.

However, the exact schedule will be clear only when the LA Secretariat issues a provisional calendar.

The session is being held five days ahead of the expiry of the deadline (October 28) of convening a session within six months of the previous session, as per the constitutional requirement.

A special day-long session was convened in Jammu on April 28, 2025, to pass a resolution condemning the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22, 2025. Prior to it, the maiden budget session of the J&K legislature was convened from March 3 to April 9, 2025, in Jammu.

The opposition had been demanding the immediate convening of the session since early September to discuss some pressing issues, mainly devastation caused by recent rain-induced floods, landslides, leading to critical issues, including those pertaining to connectivity; AAP MLA Mehraj Malik’s detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA), and statehood restoration.

If by then, the government does not receive business rules, pending approval of the LG since June this year, it may also be a vital issue to be flagged during the session.

During the budget session, the private members’ bills and resolutions could not be taken up due to the uproar that dominated the last three days on account of the Waqf Amendment Act passed by the Parliament.

Court orders status quo on Gulmarg hotel

0

Baramulla, Sep 27: A day after the possession of Hotel Royal Park, Gulmarg, was taken over by the J&K government after its rent agreement expired in June this year, a Baramulla court directed the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) to maintain the status quo with respect to the hotel premises until the next hearing scheduled on October 7, 2025.

The order was passed by the court of the 1st Additional District Judge, Baramulla, Naseer Ahmad Dar, in a suit filed by Bilal Ahmad Shah, proprietor of the Hotel Royal Park, against the GDA.

Advocate Khurshid Naik, while appearing on behalf of the plaintiff, argued over the lease agreement granted 20 years back.

Naik argued that the 20-year lease period should be calculated from December 2005, the date of completion of renovation works and execution of the rent deed, and would therefore expire only in November 2025.

He argued that the plaintiff had regularly paid rent, including an advance for the coming four months, and that his request for a lease extension of another 20 years was still under consideration with the J&K Tourism Department.

The court, after perusing the plaint and supporting documents, observed that a prima facie case exists in favour of the plaintiff and restrained the GDA from eviction until further hearing.

The order also allows the defendant authority to seek modification or cancellation of the interim relief.

Earlier, GDA officials had announced that Hotel Royal Park was being reclaimed after the rent agreement expired in June this year, and that the property would be handed back to the GDA.

The hotel, a GDA-owned property, had been rented to a local businessman for nearly two decades.

The move to reclaim the Hotel Royal Park, Gulmarg, by the authorities on Saturday sparked massive uproar among scores of tourists staying at Hotel Royal Park, Gulmarg.

The tourists alleged harassment after they were asked to vacate the hotel immediately, leaving them in distress.

Accusing the authorities of harassment, a woman tourist staying at the hotel said that a group of unknown officials repeatedly knocked at their doors and directed them to vacate their rooms.

Sangeeta of Maharashtra said she had booked the hotel for three days a few weeks back.

“Since yesterday, we have had a bitter experience. Our doors are being repeatedly knocked on by officials asking us to vacate immediately. It is harassment,” she said. “I am suffering from an anxiety disorder. I came here for a stress-free stay, but instead I experienced repeated harassment, which has worsened my health.”

Sangeeta’s son, who accompanied her, questioned why the hotel accepted online bookings if the authorities had planned to seize it.

“The hotel rooms were booked by tourists. The officials, in a hurry, want us to leave the hotel. What kind of hospitality is this? The Tourism Department, after the Pahalgam terror attack, is wooing tourists to return to Kashmir and enjoy the hospitality, but here we are facing this unexpected behaviour from the officials,” he said.

The Hotel Royal Park, Gulmarg, an earlier property of GDA, had been rented to a local businessman for nearly two decades.

An official on Friday said that after the rent agreement expired in June, the rent extension was denied by the government, and the property was subsequently taken back.

The court order issued on Saturday is considered a huge relief to the proprietor of the hotel, besides scores of tourists staying at the hotel who were worried over the sudden decision by the authorities to seize the hotel.

Er Rashid pens down symbolic letter to Mahatma Gandhi highlighting ‘importance of non-violence’

Terror funding case: Delhi HC issues notice to NIA on MP Engineer Rashid's bail plea

Srinagar, Sep 27: Incarcerated Member of Parliament from Baramulla, Er Rashid, has written “a symbolic letter to the Mahatma Gandhi”, addressing him affectionately as “Bapu.”

The letter, sent from Tihar Jail through the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, blends reverence for Gandhi’s ideals with anguish over Kashmir’s current reality, said a press release. AIP Chief Spokesman Inam Un Nabi made the letter public in which Er Rashid begins with a universal appeal: “Adab Bapu, please accept my best wishes on the eve of your birthday. Not only India but the entire world is in desperate need of peace.” He laments that while Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence is more relevant than ever, nations across the globe directly or indirectly, continue to indulge in violence, even while claiming to fight for peace. Criticising the “hollow invocations of Gandhi,” he writes: “Almost every country willingly or unwillingly contributes to violence, but makes ridiculous claims of fighting for peace. Those who speak most of your message, Bapu, hardly match their words with deeds.”

The MP goes on to highlight the various laws: “Those who speak against UAPA terrorism , prefer silence as they are scared of the law of the land. Thousands lie in graves, men in prisons lose their lives and thousands of us are in jails because of the misdeeds of Partition, for which nobody takes responsibility.”

Er Rashid also acknowledges the plight of Kashmiri Pandits and border residents: “Kashmiri Pandits, who by your own confession were protected by Kashmiri Muslims at the cost of their own lives, are still living as refugees. Men, women and children from border areas continue to live displaced lives near the LoC—second homes for those who cannot return.”
