Israeli army orders evacuation of Gaza City hospital as world leaders gather at UN

Malta says it will recognize the state of Palestine, joining France and possibly Britain

Jerusalem, Sep 22: Israeli forces showed no signs of relenting on their new ground offensive in Gaza City on Monday as world leaders gathered in New York for the United Nations General Assembly and more countries prepared to join the surge of nations recognising a Palestinian state.

Hundreds of thousands have remained in the city, the territory’s largest and already in ruins from nearly two years of war and struggling with famine. The Israeli military ordered the evacuation on Monday of the Jordanian Hospital, a key health clinic, a Palestinian health official said.

The latest Israeli operation, which started last Tuesday, further escalates a conflict that has roiled the Middle East and likely pushes any ceasefire farther out of reach. The Israeli military, which says it wants to “destroy Hamas’ military infrastructure”, hasn’t given a timeline for the offensive, but there were indications it could take months.

Many have been attempting to relocate from the city, where 1 million people once lived, to the southern Gaza Strip, following Israeli military calls for a full evacuation.

Israeli military orders evacuation of a key Gaza City hospital

The Jordanian field hospital in the city’s southwestern neighbourhood of Tal al-Hawa received orders to evacuate on Monday morning, according to a senior health official.

The military has already ordered all Palestinians in Gaza City to head south, to the central and southern Gaza Strip. It has told aid workers in private messages that all humanitarian sites — except hospitals — must evacuate.

The military didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Dr Muneer al-Boush, director general of the Gaza Health Ministry, told The Associated Press that the hospital has at least 300 patients, as well as medical staff and family members of the patients.

The order came as residents reported that troops were approaching the facility, with dozens of families trapped in their homes and shelters around the hospital.

Paris’ famed Eiffel Tower projects both Palestinian and Israeli flags

The two flags and a dove with an olive branch have been projected onto a giant screen on the Eiffel Tower on Sunday evening, ahead of France’s recognition of a Palestinian State.

The city’s mayor, Anne Hidalgo, said on Bluesky social media that it was meant to show Paris’ support for French President Emmanuel Macron’s initiative, to be formalised at a United Nations conference later on Monday.

“Paris reaffirms its commitment to peace, which more than ever requires a two-state solution”, and expressed “its solidarity towards all Palestinian and Israeli civilian victims,” Hidalgo wrote.

Italy’s unions call for a 24-hour general strike in solidarity with the people in Gaza

The strike, paired with demonstrations and sit-ins held across the country, will affect public transportation, trains, schools and ports.

The protest was called for Monday by grassroots unions across Italy. The unions have denounced “the inertia of the Italian and EU governments” in the face of the violence suffered by the people of Gaza.

Italy stops a shipment of explosives to Israel

An Italian mayor says the port of Ravenna blocked the transit of two containers carrying “explosives” to Israel, following a letter by local administrators.

Ravenna mayor and centre-left politician Alessandro Barattoni told reporters that port authorities accepted a request from him and the regional governor. The explosives, which he did not elaborate on, were en route to the Israeli port of Haifa.

Barattoni also called for a clear position from the Italian government to avoid arms shipments to Israel through Italy.

Over 1.37 lakh metric tons of fruit dispatched from Kashmir: Div Com Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep 22: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Ansul Garg on Monday said that more than one lakh thirty-seven thousand metric tons of fruit have been dispatched from the Valley in recent days through the Mughal Road, Srinagar–Jammu National Highway, and the railway parcel service.

Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, Garg said that the dispatches have been carried out as per the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) followed for the past ten days under the directions of the Chief Secretary. He noted that every day around 1,500 to 2,000 fresh fruit trucks accumulate in the Valley and are being systematically sent to Jammu with the help of Traffic Police.

“The movement of trucks has now improved significantly. Earlier, it was around 1,500, but today nearly 4,000 trucks are being seen on the highways. Around 2,000 trucks from Qazigund alone left for Jammu today,” Garg said.

He added that fruit evacuation has been given top priority and is being facilitated both via NH44 and the Mughal Road. In addition, consignments are being dispatched through trains directly to Adarsh Nagar in Delhi. He said that fruit from North Kashmir is also being evacuated on a daily basis.

Responding to concerns over fuel availability, the Divisional Commissioner as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust said there is no scarcity of supplies. “There is fuel stock available for a week and replenishment is taking place regularly. People should not believe in rumours. There is sufficient stock, and the administration is closely monitoring the situation,” he clarified.

Garg said the weather has remained conducive for restoration works and buffer stocks are expected to increase in the coming days. He emphasised that Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah are personally monitoring and reviewing highway restoration and fruit evacuation efforts.

The Divisional Commissioner also thanked locals for their cooperation, saying that public support enabled the administration to mitigate hardships and streamline operations during the recent disruption. [KNT]

Massive anti-militancy operation launched in Kathua’s Malhar

Kathua, Sep 22: Security forces on Monday launched a massive anti-militancy operation in the Malhar area of Kathua district after two suspected armed militants were seen in Dragal village.

Officials said that Jammu and Kashmir Police, Indian Army, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) are jointly conducting the search operation. The area has been cordoned off and extensive searches are underway to track down the suspected militants.

“The operation was initiated following credible inputs about the movement of two armed militants. The objective is to neutralise them and prevent any untoward incident,” a senior police officer told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.

Locals in the area reported heightened movement of security personnel since morning, with forces fanning out in dense forest belts and higher reaches of Malhar. Specialised teams including sniffer dogs and surveillance units have also been pressed into service.

Officials confirmed that intermittent searches are being carried out in multiple hamlets around Dragal, with all exit points sealed to prevent the suspects from escaping. So far, no contact has been established with the suspected militants.

The Kathua sector has witnessed heightened vigil in recent months due to reports of infiltration attempts across the International Border and the Line of Control. Security officials said that efforts are underway to ensure militants do not find shelter or escape routes in the region’s rugged terrain.

Authorities have urged locals to remain indoors and report any suspicious movement to security forces. “The safety of civilians remains our priority while the operation continues,” an official said.

The operation was still in progress when last reports came in. [KNT]

Officials said the shipments highlight the vital role of railways in facilitating the movement of Kashmir’s high-quality horticultural produce during the peak harvest season, ensuring economic support for growers and maintaining supply chains efficiently. (KDC)

Running government in J&K like walking on edge of a sword: Farooq Abdullah

Need to take urgent steps to tackle growing climate unpredictability: Farooq Abdullah

Srinagar, Sep 22: National Conference President and former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Monday likened running the government in Jammu and Kashmir under the present circumstances to “walking on the edge of a sword.”

Speaking to reporters, Farooq Abdullah said despite the challenges, governance has to continue. “To run the government in the current scenario is just like walking on the edge of a sword, but we have to run the government,” he remarked.

The NC chief reiterated that the restoration of statehood remains a vital demand of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “Statehood is an important issue and people of Jammu and Kashmir hope it will be restored,” he said, adding that focus should remain on pressing Delhi for this demand.

When asked about the issue of separatist leader Yasin Malik, Abdullah declined to make any substantive comment. “The matter is before the court and the court will decide,” he told reporters.

On the Public Safety Act (PSA) slapped on Doda MLA Mehraj Malik, Abdullah expressed his disapproval, though he criticised the legislator’s choice of words. “The PSA on Mehraj Malik is not justified, but the unparliamentary language he used was wrong. We have no authority on this subject; the authority lies with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha,” he said.

Responding to a query about the reduction in Goods and Services Tax (GST), Farooq Abdullah said that the issue of statehood must take precedence. “It is better to talk about statehood than GST,” he stated, indicating that political status and constitutional guarantees remain higher on his party’s agenda. Gold breaches Rs 1.11 lakh/10 g in futures trade as traders await key US inflation data

Gold breaches Rs 1.11 lakh/10 g in futures trade as traders await key US inflation data

New Delhi, Sep 22: Gold prices breached the Rs 1.11 lakh per 10 grams by jumping Rs 799 in the domestic futures market on Monday tracking strong global cues as investors looked ahead to key US inflation data and comments from several Federal Reserve officials this week for further policy guidance.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures for December delivery climbed Rs 799 or 0.72 per cent to hit a record high Rs 1,11,750 per 10 grams.

However, the most traded precious metal futures for October delivery appreciated Rs 761 or 0.69 per cent to Rs 1,10,608 per 10 grams. Last week, it had surged to hit a fresh peak of Rs 1,10,666 per 10 grams.

Silver, too, witnessed gains to hit record peaks. The white metal futures for March next year delivery rallied Rs 2,446 or 1.86 per cent to hit an all-time high of Rs 1,33,582 per kilogram.
Similarly, the most traded silver futures for December delivery surged by Rs 2,473, or 1.9 per cent, to hit a fresh peak of Rs 1,32,311 per kg on the MCX.

Traders said weakness in the rupee and subdued sentiment in the domestic equity markets further supported the bullion prices.

On the global front, gold futures increased by USD 26.82, or 0.72 per cent to USD 3,732.62 per ounce. Last week, it rose to hit a lifetime high of USD 3,744 per ounce.

“Gold prices edged up to hover near record levels, as investors looked ahead to key US inflation data and comments from several Federal Reserve officials this week for further policy guidance,” said Jigar Trivedi, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities.

Last week, the US Federal Reserve delivered its first rate cut of the year and signalled further reductions ahead as the labour market weakens.

“Markets currently imply two more reductions this year, one in October and another in December, with expectations of continued monetary policy easing providing a major boost to bullion’s 40 per cent surge so far this year,” Trivedi said.

Gold has also been supported by safe-haven demand amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and concerns over the economic impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, alongside robust central bank buying and sustained ETF inflows, he added.

Meanwhile, silver futures for December delivery were trading 2.17 per cent higher at USD 43.88 per ounce.

“Silver has been carving out a more aggressive trajectory than gold, driven by investment flows, solar panel demand and industrial use in electric vehicles, 5G infrastructure and battery storage,” said Riya Singh, Research Analyst, Commodities and Currency, Emkay Global Financial Services.
Supply growth has been muted, leaving the market vulnerable to disruptions, she added.

Pranav Mer, Vice President, EBG – Commodity & Currency Research, JM Financial Services, projected that silver prices in the domestic market have an upside potential to test Rs 1,40,000-1,50,000 per kilogram on the commodities bourse.
