Iran says nuclear talks with US now “meaningless” after Israeli strike: Report

Iran says nuclear talks with US now "meaningless" after Israeli strike: Report

Tehran, June 14 : Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday said that any talks with the United States over Tehran’s nuclear programme are now “meaningless” following Israel’s recent attack on Iranian territory, according to a report by Mehr News Agency (MNA).

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei Hamaneh stated that the US cannot claim to be negotiating while allegedly permitting Israel to carry out military strikes.

“The other side (the US) acted in a way that makes dialogue meaningless. You cannot claim to negotiate and at the same time divide work by allowing the Zionist regime (Israel) to target Iran’s territory,” MNA, citing Baghaei, reported.

Baghaei also accused the US of supporting the Israeli attack. He said that the Israeli regime “succeeded in influencing” the diplomatic process and claimed the strike would not have happened without Washington’s permission.

Iran had previously accused the United States of being complicit in the Israeli military action. The sixth round of US-Iran nuclear talks was scheduled to take place on Sunday in Muscat. However, following the Israeli strikes, it remains unclear whether the meeting will proceed.

Mehr News Agency, citing Reuters, reported that US President Donald Trump said he and his team were aware that the Israeli attacks were going to happen, but still believed there was a possibility for an agreement.

Meanwhile, hours after the first Israeli strike, Trump issued a warning to Iran, urging it to strike a deal “before it is too late.”

In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump said: “I gave Iran chance after chance to make a deal. I told them, in the strongest of words, to ‘just do it,’ but no matter how hard they tried, no matter how close they got, they just couldn’t get it done. I told them it would be much worse than anything they know, anticipated, or were told, that the United States makes the best and most lethal military equipment anywhere in the World, by far, and that Israel has a lot of it, with much more to come – and they know how to use it. Certain Iranian hardliners spoke bravely, but they didn’t know what was about to happen.”

“They are all DEAD now, and it will only get worse! There has already been great death and destruction, but there is still time to make this slaughter, with the next already planned attacks being even more brutal, come to an end. Iran must make a deal before there is nothing left, and save what was once known as the Iranian Empire. No more death, no more destruction, Just do it, before it is too late. God Bless You All,”  he iraadded.

Trump’s comments come amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.

On Friday, Israel launched what it described as “pre-emptive” strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. In a clarification posted on X, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said: “Iran is closer than ever to obtaining a nuclear weapon. Weapons of mass destruction in the hands of the Iranian regime are an existential threat to the State of Israel and to the wider world. The State of Israel has no choice but to fulfil the obligation to act in defence of its citizens and will continue to do so everywhere it is required to do so.”

Following the attack, CNN reported that several of Iran’s top officials, including senior military leaders and nuclear scientists, were killed.

In response, Iran reportedly launched loitering munitions and missile strikes on Tel Aviv. Israel has since continued its counterstrikes.

MHA slams states, UTs for lax enforcement of ‘Support to Poor Prisoners’ scheme

New Delhi, June 14: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has expressed serious concern over the poor implementation of the “Support to Poor Prisoners” scheme, which was launched in May 2023 to aid underprivileged inmates languishing in jails due to their inability to pay bail or fines.

In a communication addressed to Principal Secretaries and Director Generals/Inspectors General of Prisons across all States and Union Territories, the MHA has noted that despite clear guidelines and funds being made available, the scheme remains largely unimplemented in most regions.

The scheme aims to extend financial support to eligible prisoners who are unable to secure release solely due to financial hardship. It mandates the formation of Empowered Committees at the district level and Oversight Committees at the state level to identify beneficiaries and sanction funds accordingly.

The ministry has highlighted that while a few states and UTs have taken action, the majority have neither identified eligible prisoners nor held regular committee meetings. Consequently, the allocated funds remain unutilized.

“Effective implementation of the scheme can not only help the poor but also reduce overcrowding in prisons,” the MHA noted, urging state authorities to act swiftly and hold regular Empowered Committee meetings.

The letter, signed by Director (Prison Reforms) Arun Sobti, reiterates the Centre’s appeal for coordinated efforts to deliver justice to those trapped in jails due to poverty, underlining the humanitarian and administrative value of the initiative. [KNT]

IAEA confirms internal contamination after Israel airstrikes partially destroy Natanz nuclear facility

IAEA confirms internal contamination after Israel airstrikes partially destroy Natanz nuclear facility

Vienna, June 14: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi, in his statement to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Friday, confirmed that Israel’s airstrikes on Iran’s Natanz nuclear site caused internal radiological and chemical contamination.

However, radiation levels outside the site remain normal, posing no threat to the public or the environment.

“However, due to the impacts, there is radiological and chemical contamination inside the facilities in Natanz. The type of radiation present inside the facility, primarily alpha particles, is manageable with appropriate radiation protection measures,” Grossi said in his statement.

The IAEA chief said the Israeli attacks destroyed the above-ground section of the Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant, where uranium was being enriched up to 60 per cent U-235.

Grossi stated that the agency has been in “permanent contact” with Iran’s Nuclear Regulatory Authority to assess the damage and ensure nuclear safety and security.

“Iran has confirmed that at present, only the Natanz Fuel Enrichment Plant site has been attacked in today’s strikes. This facility contains the Fuel Enrichment Plant and the Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant,” The IAEA Director General said.

He added that the electrical infrastructure, including the main and emergency power systems, was also destroyed. While there is no visible damage to the underground cascade hall, the loss of power may have affected the centrifuges housed there.

“There is no indication of a physical attack on the underground cascade hall containing part of the Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant and the main Fuel Enrichment Plant. However, the loss of power to the cascade hall may have damaged the centrifuges there,” the IAEA Chief added.

According to Grossi, Iran has also informed the agency of attacks near other sites, including the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant and the Esfahan complex. These facilities include a uranium conversion facility, a fuel plate fabrication plant, a fuel manufacturing plant, and a Uranium dioxide (UO2) powder plant. The IAEA said it has not yet verified the full extent of any damage to these locations.

“All these developments are deeply concerning. I have repeatedly stated that nuclear facilities must never be attacked, regardless of the context or circumstances, as it could harm both people and the environment. Such attacks have serious implications for nuclear safety, security and safeguards, as well as regional and international peace and security,” Grossi said.

The IAEA’s Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) has been in continuous contact with Iranian officials since the attack. A task force of senior agency staff has also been set up to monitor the situation 24/7 and report to the UN Security Council if required.

“As Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and consistent with the objectives of the IAEA under the IAEA Statute, I call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation,” Grossi said.

He added that the agency is prepared to deploy nuclear safety and security experts, in addition to its existing safeguards inspectors in Iran.

Grossi also informed the IAEA Board of Governors that he is ready to travel to the region to assess the situation directly. “I have indicated to the respective authorities my readiness to travel at the earliest to assess the situation and ensure safety, security and non-proliferation in Iran. I have also been in contact with our inspectors in Iran and Israel. The safety of our staff is of paramount importance. All necessary actions are being taken to ensure they are not harmed,” he said.

On Friday, Israel launched “pre-emptive” strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. In a clarification, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said in a post on X, “Iran is closer than ever to obtaining a nuclear weapon. Weapons of mass destruction in the hands of the Iranian regime are an existential threat to the State of Israel and to the wider world. The State of Israel has no choice but to fulfil the obligation to act in defence of its citizens and will continue to do so everywhere it is required to do so.”

Following the attack, CNN reported that several of Iran’s top figures, including military leaders and nuclear scientists, were killed. In response, Iran retaliated by launching loitering munitions and missile strikes on Tel Aviv. Israel has since continued its counterstrikes.

Congress slams PM’s silence as Trump takes credit 13 times for India-Pak ceasefire deal

Congress slams PM’s silence as Trump takes credit 13 times for India-Pak ceasefire deal

New Delhi, Jun 14: The Congress on Saturday cited that on 13 occasions, US President Donald Trump has publicly “trumpeted” that he brought about a “ceasefire” between India and Pakistan, and asked when will Prime Minister Narendra Modi speak up on these claims.

“Today President Trump turns 79. In the 34 days between May 10, 2025, and June 13, 2025, he trumpeted publicly on 13 different occasions in 3 different countries that he had brought about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan using trade with America as a carrot and stick,” Congress general secretary in-charge communications, Jairam Ramesh, said on X.

“He (Trump), of course, showered praise on both countries in equal measure,” Ramesh said.

“@narendramodi when will you speak up,” the Congress leader asked in the post.

Ramesh also shared on X a list and details of the occasions when Trump made the claims with the quotes of the US president and links to media reports.

With Trump repeating his claim that he “stopped a war between India and Pakistan”, Ramesh on Friday said the US president continues to make his claims for the “nth time” but Prime Minister Modi continues to be silent on them.

Ramesh also shared a video clip of Trump’s remarks on X, in which he repeated his claim that he “stopped a war between India and Pakistan” and stopped it “with trade”.

Ramesh said that as India is engulfed in grief over the Ahmedabad aircraft tragedy, President Trump continues to make his claims on India and Pakistan for the “nth time”.

“This was at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC yesterday. And the Prime Minister continues to be silent on these claims,” the Congress leader said on X.

Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7. Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions.

The on-ground hostilities ended with an understanding of halting military actions following talks between the director generals of military operations (DGMOs) of both sides on May 10.

Trump has been repeatedly claiming that the US stopped India and Pakistan from fighting.

However, India has been consistently maintaining that the understanding on cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached following direct talks between the DGMOs of the two militaries.

Earlier this week, the Congress claimed India has suffered three “huge diplomatic setbacks” from the US, which is constantly hyphenating India and Pakistan and that the Modi government’s foreign policy has “failed” as it is driven by domestic political considerations.

Ramesh said the US’ recent statements were both a “challenge and a warning” and required serious thinking “when the prime minister is only interested in playing divisive politics”.

He also said Modi should leave aside his “stubbornness” to call an all-party meeting and a special session of Parliament.

Ramesh said US Army General Michael Kurilla calling Pakistan a “phenomenal partner” in the counterterrorism world, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir’s reported visit to Washington for the US Army Day celebrations later this week, and the recent remarks by a Trump administration spokesperson were “three huge setbacks” to India.

Israeli military says Iran launched over 100 drones at Israel in past few hours

Tehran, June 14: Iran’s air defence has downed two Israeli Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter jets as well as a large number of micro aerial vehicles, capturing a female Israeli pilot.

The Iranian army has not officially confirmed the report, Xinhua news agency reported quoting semi-official Tasnim news agency.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) rejected the report. In a statement, IDF Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee called the allegations “completely baseless.”

The statements come amid heightened tensions following Israel’s large-scale strikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities, which have raised fears of broader regional escalation.

Iran’s state-run Press TV reported that Iranian air defences had shot down an Israeli drone near the Fordow nuclear facility, located close to the central city of Qom.

Early Friday, Israel carried out airstrikes on Tehran and other cities across Iran.

Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s UN envoy, said that at least 78 people were killed as a result of Israel’s strikes, while 320 others were injured, most of whom were civilians.

Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Mohammad Bagheri, Chief Commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Hossein Salami, Gholam-Ali Rashid, commander of Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, and Commander of the IRGC’s Aerospace Division Amir Ali Hajizadeh were killed in the Israeli airstrikes on Tehran.

Late Friday, Israel reported that Iran launched nearly 100 missiles toward central and northern Israel in two massive barrages, causing significant damage and injuring 41 people, two of whom are in critical condition.
