Special train arranged for stranded passengers from Jammu to Delhi

Budgam, Sep 19: Railway authorities on Friday operated the first special train from Budgam to Katra to facilitate passengers affected by the Jammu–Srinagar highway closure. The service will operate daily for 15 days, from September 19 to October 3, 2025.

According to Northern Railway officials in Jammu, road traffic in the division has been severely affected by heavy rains and waterlogging.

‘Chunaav ka chawkidaar’ protected ‘vote chors’: Rahul’s dig at EC

'Chunaav ka chawkidaar' protected 'vote chors': Rahul's dig at EC

New Delhi, Sep 19: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday reiterated his “vote chori” allegations and took a swipe at the Election Commission, calling it an “election watchman” who “stayed awake, watched the theft, and protected the thieves”.

His remarks came a day after he ramped up his attack on the issue of vote theft, accusing Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of protecting those who “destroyed democracy”.

To buttress his allegation, he cited data from a Karnataka assembly constituency to claim that votes of Congress supporters were being systematically deleted.

The Election Commission dubbed the allegations “incorrect and baseless” and said. “No deletion of any vote can be done online by any member of the public, as misconceived by Gandhi.”

In a post in Hindi on X on Friday, Gandhi said, “Wake up at 4 a.m. Eliminate two voters in 36 seconds, Then go back to sleep – this is how vote theft happens!”

“Chunaav ka chawkidaar jaagta raha, chori dekhta raha, choron ko bachata raha (The election watchman stayed awake, watched the theft, and protected the thieves),” the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha charged.

Gandhi also shared a 36-second video from his press conference in which he explains the modus operandi of the alleged “vote theft”.

In a post on Thursday evening, Gandhi had said, “The nation’s youth, the nation’s students, the nation’s Gen Z, will defend the Constitution, protect democracy, and stop vote theft. I always stand with them. Jai Hind!”

In his fresh offensive against the Election Commission, Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had said Thursday that the poll panel must stop protecting “vote chors” and provide within a week information sought by the Karnataka CID in an investigation into voter deletions.

If not, it will be known for sure that the poll body is complicit in the “murder of the Constitution”, Gandhi alleged at his press conference at the Congress’ Indira Bhawan headquarters here.

And this, he said at the outset, was not the “hydrogen bomb” revelations that he had promised. That will happen soon.

Gandhi cited details of alleged attempts to delete 6,018 votes in Karnataka’s Aland constituency in the run up to 2023 assembly polls. He also gave the example of Maharashtra’s Rajura constituency where he claimed 6,850 voters were added in a “fraudulent” manner using automated software.

“Same system is doing this. It is doing it in Karnataka, Maharashtra, it has done it in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and we have proof of it,” the Congress leader had alleged.

“Our demand is Gyanesh Kumar, do your job… You have taken an oath, you are India’s chief election commissioner, you must give evidence to the Karnataka CID,” Gandhi had said, directly taking on the CEC.

He had also asked the CEC to “stop giving excuses” and release evidence to the Karnataka CID immediately.

Taliban bans books by women, 18 university subjects in sweeping curriculum purge

New Delhi, Sept 19: The Taliban government has ordered the removal of hundreds of books from Afghanistan’s university system, including more than 140 written by women, and imposed a ban on 18 academic subjects, citing conflicts with Sharia law and state policy, reports BBC. Among the blacklisted titles are works such as Safety in the Chemical Laboratory.

Officials said the restrictions target materials deemed “anti-Sharia and against Taliban policies.” At least six of the prohibited subjects focus on women, including Gender and Development, The Role of Women in Communication, and Women’s Sociology.

The decree, issued in late August and circulated to universities, was signed by Ziaur Rahman Aryubi, deputy academic director of the Taliban-run Ministry of Higher Education, reports BBC. He said the decisions followed recommendations by a panel of “religious scholars and experts.”

The order also bans books by Iranian authors or publishers, with 310 of the 679 proscribed titles falling into this category. A member of the review committee told BBC Afghan the measure aimed to curb the “infiltration of Iranian content” into the curriculum.

The move adds to a growing list of restrictions since the Taliban regained power in 2021. Women and girls have borne the brunt: barred from schooling beyond the sixth grade and, since late 2024, excluded from midwifery training programs. This week, the group also banned fibre-optic internet in at least ten provinces, reportedly to curb “immorality.”

Zakia Adeli, former deputy justice minister and one of the affected authors, said the new ban was predictable. “When women themselves are not allowed to study, their views, ideas and writings are also suppressed,” she remarked.

The Taliban maintain that women’s rights are respected “in accordance with Afghan culture and Islamic law.”

Cloudburst triggers massive destruction in Himachal’s Kinnaur, vehicles swept away

New Delhi, Sep 19: A devastating cloudburst struck Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district causing severe flooding and destruction in Thach village.

The incident, which occurred around 12:10 A.M. on Friday, led to a sudden surge in three adjoining mountain streams, sweeping away two vehicles and damaging fields, orchards, and homes.

Locals reported that residents fled their houses in panic and rushed towards nearby forested areas for safety as the torrents surged through the village.

Vehicles belonging to Praveen Moyan and Hari Bisht were among those washed away in the deluge. In Mastan village, parts of homes and a cowshed were swept into the floodwaters.

Several orchards were destroyed, and the houses of villagers Ranveer and three others are reportedly on the verge of collapse.

In the state capital, Shimla, a landslide near Edward School disrupted traffic and forced the closure of the city’s vital Circular Road. Meanwhile, a three-storey house collapsed in the Karevathi area of Kumarsain, further highlighting the widespread impact of heavy rainfall across the state.

So far, the monsoon-related disasters have claimed 424 lives in Himachal Pradesh, with damages across the state mounting each day.

Earlier this week, on September 17, four people were killed and six went missing as flash floods and landslides struck various parts of the state. Over 650 roads, including three National Highways remain blocked, crippling connectivity and access to essential services like electricity and drinking water.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has declared Himachal Pradesh a disaster-hit state, estimating cumulative damages at over Rs 20,000 crore over the past three years. The state has appealed to the Centre for urgent financial assistance and comprehensive relief support.

Just days earlier, on September 16, another cloudburst in Mandi district wreaked havoc in Dharampur, washing away several HRTC buses, private vehicles, and submerging homes and shops. Locals described the scene as worse than the 2015 floods, with the Saun rivulet overflowing and inundating vast areas.

Relentless rains continue to batter the hill state, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake and pushing both the administration and residents to the brink.
