Grand Mufti urges govt to ensure uninterrupted highway, dedicated freight train for Kashmir’s fruit industry

Srinagar, Sept 15: The Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir has expressed grave concern over the hardships faced by fruit growers in the Valley due to recurring blockades and disruptions along the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway, calling for urgent intervention by the Centre and the UT administration.

In a press statement issued on Monday, the Grand Mufti said the highway—considered the lifeline of Kashmir’s horticulture sector—is frequently closed or poorly maintained, leading to massive delays in the transportation of perishable fruit consignments. He said entire loads of apples, pears, and other produce were suffering damage or losing value due to prolonged transit times, leaving thousands of families in financial distress.

Highlighting the urgent need for alternatives, the Grand Mufti appealed to the Government of India to facilitate a dedicated freight train service from Baramulla to Delhi’s Fruit Mandi, enabling uninterrupted carriage of consignments without repeated loading and unloading stops. He stressed that arrangements should also be made to collect produce from other parts of the Valley to ensure fairness and efficiency.

“The fruit industry is the backbone of Kashmir’s economy, and any negligence towards safeguarding this vital sector directly threatens the livelihood of lakhs of people. Timely and decisive action is not only an economic necessity but also a moral responsibility,” the statement read.

The Grand Mufti urged the Union Ministers of Transport, Defence, and Agriculture, as well as the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir and the Chief Engineer of Project Beacon, to take immediate cognizance of the crisis.

Reaffirming solidarity with fruit growers, the Office of the Grand Mufti appealed for swift measures to ensure both free road passage and reliable railway connectivity so that Kashmir’s produce can reach markets across the country on time.

SC refuses to stay entire waqf law, stalls certain provisions

SC to hear on July 24 Maharashtra govt’s plea against Bombay HC verdict SC-Train blast

New Delhi, Sep 15: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to stay the Waqf law, saying there was a “presumption” of constitutionality in its favour, but stalled the operation of certain provisions, including the one which said only those who are practising Islam for the last five years can create a waqf.

Pronouncing an interim order, a bench comprising Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih said, “We have considered prima facie challenge to each of the sections and found no case was made out to stay the entire statute.”

The top court, however, stayed the provision which said that persons practising Islam for the last five years can only create a waqf.

It also stayed the provision which enabled an officer designated by the government to determine the dispute whether the Waqf property has encroached on a government property.

“We have held presumption is always on constitutionality of statute and in rarest it can be done. We have found that the entire Act is challenged, but the basic challenge was sections 3(r), 3C, 14,…,” the CJI said.

It directed that as far as possible the Chief Executive Officer of the Waqf Board should be a Muslim, while refusing to stay the amendment allowing the appointment of a non-Muslim as a CEO.

It also said the number of non-Muslims in state waqf boards and central waqf councils cannot exceed three.

The detailed judgement is awaited.

The top court on May 22 had reserved its order on three key issues, including the power to denotify properties declared as “waqf by courts, waqf-by-user or waqf by deed”, which cropped up during the hearing of pleas challenging the validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.

Pakistan lodges protest with ACC after Indian players refuse handshake post Asia Cup match

Pakistan lodges protest with ACC after Indian players refuse handshake post Asia Cup match

Dubai, Sep 15: Pakistan have lodged a protest with the Asian Cricket Council over the Indian players’ refusal to shake hands with them following their Asia Cup game here, labelling it “unsporting” and escalating the tension between the two sides.

In a statement late on Sunday night, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said India’s actions were against the spirit of the game after the seven-wicket win for the Suryakumar Yadav-led unit.

“Team manager Naveed Cheema lodged a strong protest against Indian players’ behaviour of not shaking hands. It was deemed as unsporting and against the sport of the game. As a protest we did not send our captain to the post match ceremony,” read a PCB statement.

The series of events could be repeated as both teams could meet twice more in the remainder of the tournament.

Suryakumar had earlier justified the decision to not shake hands with the opposition, saying it was their way of showing solidarity with the families of the Pahalgam terrorist attack victims.

Twenty six Indian tourists were killed by Pakistan-backed terrorists, prompting India to launch Operation Sindoor in retaliation.

“We took a team call. We had come only to play. We had given them a reply. Some things are beyond sportsmanship. We dedicate this victory to our armed forces who took part in ‘Operation Sindoor’ and stand with families of the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack,” said Suryakumar after the emphatic win.

The arch-rivals faced each other on a cricket ground for the first time since the dastardly attack in Kashmir and the ensuing military action by India on terror infrastructure across Pakistan in May.

It turned out to be a no contest with India outplaying Pakistan in all departments.

Even at the toss, Suryakumar did not interact or shake hands with his Pakistan counterpart Salman Ali Agha.

That also did not go down well with the Pakistan team management and post the no handshake incident at the end of the game, Salman boycotted the match presentation ceremony.

“We wanted to shake hands but disappointed that the opposition didn’t do that. Disappointed with the way we played, but we wanted to shake hands,” Paksitan head coach Mike Hesson said later.

“Salman not coming for the post-match presentation was cause and effect after what happened,” he added.

On what transpired at the toss, the PCB added: “The match referee Andy Pycroft had asked captain Salman Ali Agha, at the time of the toss, not to shake hands with his Indian counterpart.

“The Pakistan team management has lodged a protest, calling the behaviour against the spirit of sports.”

J-K: 400 shifted to shelters as land subsidence damages houses in Poonch

Poonch, Sep 15: Nearly 400 residents of Kalaban village in Mendhar sub-division of Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district have been shifted to temporary shelters after several houses developed cracks due to land subsidence triggered by continuous rainfall, officials said on Monday.

Authorities, with the support of a local NGO, are providing relief material and essentials to the displaced families. The administration has declared Kalaban unsafe and directed residents to evacuate until further notice.

On September 13, nearly 700 people were affected, and about 95 houses were damaged after days of heavy rain. Families housed in relief camps are being supplied with food, drinking water and other basic amenities, officials said.

Meanwhile, the Vaishno Devi yatra remained suspended for the 20th consecutive day on Sunday due to adverse weather and repeated landslides along the Katra route. Devotees expressed disappointment but welcomed arrangements.

“We could not have darshan because of the rainfall up there. But we are lucky to have prasad here. People are coming from far away, and at least they are getting prasad. I am just happy to be here,” said Durgesh Sharma, a devotee from Delhi.

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), in a post on X, said the yatra scheduled to resume on September 14 had been postponed due to incessant rainfall, and urged pilgrims to follow official updates.

Meanwhile, in Udhampur district, long traffic jams were reported on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) at Thard on Sunday, where only one lane is operational after a massive landslide.
Officials said thousands of vehicles, including nearly 2,000 trucks, were stranded as the temporary road created by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) cannot handle heavy traffic.

Deputy SP (Traffic) Udhampur, Jatinder Singh, said the makeshift stretch could accommodate only around 40 trucks per hour, leading to severe congestion and delays of up to two hours.

Sajad Lone slams govt as Kashmir’s fruit industry bleeds

Sajad Lone calls for creation of separate body for rebuilding houses destroyed in shelling

Srinagar, Sep 15: Peoples Conference president Sajad Gani Lone on Monday slammed National Conference-led government over its handling of the ongoing crisis caused by disruptions on the Srinagar–Jammu national highway.

In a post on X, formerly twitter, Lone minced no words in castigating the government over hindrances in movement of apple trucks on the highway.

“The apples destined for the rest of the country are in a state of rot. Massive losses for the apple growers. I am sure there must be some remedial measures,” Lone said in post on X.

Lone criticized the administration’s inaction, saying that sitting like a mute spectator and doing nothing is criminal.

“Inclement weather is not fault of the government. But sitting like a mute spectator and doing nothing is criminal,” he said.

Lone also asked Omar Abdullah to work out a strategy for facilitating unhindered movement of trucks on the highway. “Stop wandering aimlessly across the country. Sit with your officers and stakeholders and work out a strategy,” he posted on X.

Lone’s remarks came as hundreds of trucks carrying apples remain stranded, triggering protests and shutdowns across fruit mandis in the Valley.

Growers have warned of a valley-wide strike if the situation is not resolved within 48 hours—(KNO)
