India hits back at Pakistan, Switzerland at UNHRC

India hits back at Pakistan, Switzerland at UNHRC

New Delhi, Sep 11: India delivered a sharp Right of Reply at the 60th Session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) rejecting remarks made by Pakistan and Switzerland during the general debate on the oral update by the High Commissioner.

Speaking on behalf of India, Mr. Kshitij Tyagi, Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of India in Geneva, said, “We are compelled, once again, to address provocations from a country whose own leadership recently likened it to a ‘dump truck’, perhaps an inadvertently apt metaphor for a state that continues to deposit recycled falsehoods and stale propaganda before this distinguished Council.”

Calling out Pakistan’s use of international forums, Tyagi said, “Pakistan’s systematic abuse of this forum, coupled with its routine manipulation of the OIC as its mouthpiece, has become a familiar pattern. Its pathological fixation on India appears to provide it with existential validation.”

The Indian diplomat underscored Pakistan’s record on terrorism: “Lest we forget the carnage of Pahalgam, where Pakistan-sponsored terrorists turned a meadow of joy into a killing field in April this year. Lest we forget 9/11, as the world marks its anniversary tomorrow, even as we witness today the hypocrisy of those who sheltered its mastermind and glorified him as a martyr. Lest we forget Pulwama, Uri, Pathankot, Mumbai… The list is endless, Mr. President.”

Criticising Islamabad for its “audacity” to raise human rights issues, he said, “Yet Pakistan demonstrates the audacity to take the floor today, feigning moral outrage while continuing to finance and shelter the very networks that threaten global security. The international community recognizes this charade for what it is. The world will not forget. India will not forget. Our measured and proportionate response to the Pahalgam attack made that sufficiently clear.”

He asserted, “We need no lessons from a terror sponsor; no sermons from a persecutor of minorities; no advice from a state that has squandered its own credibility. India will continue to protect its citizens with unwavering resolve. We will defend our sovereignty without compromise. And we will continue to expose, time and again, the elaborate deception of a failed state whose survival depends upon trafficking in terror and tragedy.”

India also voiced displeasure at Switzerland’s remarks, despite calling it a “close friend and partner.” Tyagi said, “We would also like to respond to the surprising, shallow, and ill-informed remarks made by Switzerland. As it holds the UNHRC Presidency, it is all the more important for Switzerland to avoid wasting the Council’s time with narratives that are blatantly false and do not do justice to the reality of India. Instead, it should focus on its own challenges such as racism, systematic discrimination, and xenophobia. As the world’s largest, most diverse, and vibrant democracy with a civilizational embrace of pluralism, India remains ready to help Switzerland address these concerns.”

The Right of Reply was exercised under Agenda Item 2: General Debate at the ongoing session of the UNHRC (8 September – 8 October 2025).

High Court quashes PSA detention of Kisthwar resident

HC restores permission to Ludhiana trust to run Langar at Panchtarni

Srinagar, Sep 11: The High Court of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh has quashed the preventive detention order issued against a Kishtwar locals who had been booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) last year.

Justice MA Chowdhary, while allowing a habeas corpus petition, directed that the detenue, Muhammad Jaffer Sheikh, son of Ghulam Muhammad Sheikh of Nattas, a resident of Dool, Kishtwar, be released forthwith if not required in any other case. Sheikh had been placed under detention through Order No. 6th/DM/K/PSA of 2024 dated November 7, 2024, passed by the District Magistrate, Kishtwar.

During the hearing, Advocates SS Ahmed and Rahul Raina, appearing for the petitioner, argued that Sheikh was not informed of the period within which he could file a representation against the detention order. They contended that old FIRs from 1997, 2015, and 2019 had been cited as grounds for detention, which had no proximate link to the present necessity, and that neither the grounds of detention nor relevant material was properly supplied or explained to the detenue.

The Government, represented by Advocate Eishaan Dadhichi, relied on three FIRs and four Daily Diary Reports (DDRs) recorded at Police Station Kishtwar and PP Dool to justify the detention.

Justice Chowdhary, however, noted that the DDR entries had not culminated in any criminal proceedings and merely recording allegations could not justify preventive detention. He further observed that although the Additional District Magistrate, Kishtwar, had forwarded Sheikh’s representation to the Home Department on November 26, 2024, the record was silent on whether the representation was considered or its outcome communicated to the petitioner.

Quashing the order, the Court underscored that personal liberty is among the most cherished freedoms guaranteed under the Constitution, and safeguards under Article 22 were enacted to limit the State’s power to detain individuals without trial.

“The impugned detention order stands vitiated. The detenue shall be released from preventive custody forthwith, if not required in any other case,” the Court directed. [KNT]

KCCI welcomes Pashmina lab, modern looms to boost artisan sector

Srinagar, Sep 11: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has welcomed the inauguration of the Animal Fibre Quality Assurance Laboratory at SKUAST-Kashmir’s Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Shuhama, calling it a landmark step for the Valley’s Pashmina industry.

The Chamber said the laboratory will safeguard the purity and authenticity of Pashmina, providing scientific testing and certification to protect artisans and stakeholders from imitation products and strengthen consumer confidence in domestic and international markets.

KCCI also appreciated the distribution of Modified Modern Steel Carpet Looms among artisan clusters in Anantnag, Bandipora, Baramulla, Budgam, Kulgam, and Srinagar by the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT). The upgraded looms are expected to enhance weaving precision, increase productivity, and improve working conditions for artisans who have long used outdated equipment.

Recalling earlier distributions of modern looms, KCCI said the initiative had already increased efficiency, reduced physical strain, and improved the quality of finished carpets. The Chamber called for expanding the scheme to reach more artisan families across the Valley.

Union Textiles Secretary Neelama Shami Rao assured that a proposal for procuring 500 additional looms by the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, is under active consideration. KCCI urged swift government approval to directly boost artisan incomes and secure the future of the heritage craft.

The Chamber also commended the efforts of Commissioner Secretary, Industries and Commerce, Vikramjit Singh; Director, Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir, Mussrat Islam; and Director, IICT, Zubair Ahmad, describing their work as a commitment to strengthening Kashmir’s artisan-based economy.

KCCI expressed hope that these developments will be supported by sustained institutional measures, including research and development, artisan welfare, skill development, and international market linkages.

Kejriwal criticises Centre over denial of Farooq Abdullah’s meeting with Sanjay Singh

Srinagar, Sep 11: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has raised concerns after former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah was reportedly denied permission to meet AAP MP Sanjay Singh in Srinagar.

Singh, who had travelled to the union territory to protest the arrest of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA), was placed under what he described as house arrest by local police authorities. Visuals shared on social media by the AAP leader showed Abdullah arriving at a government guest house to meet Singh, but being stopped from entering the premises.

Kejriwal, sharing the incident on social media platform X, questioned the decision to prevent Abdullah’s entry, stating: “The former Chief Minister, who is the father of the current Chief Minister, is not being allowed to meet Sanjay Singh in his own state?” He referred to the act as one that requires scrutiny in a democratic framework.

Sanjay Singh also issued a statement on social media, saying that Abdullah had come to express solidarity but was not permitted to meet him. Singh questioned the basis of his detention and reiterated that he was in Srinagar to peacefully protest the arrest of Mehraj Malik, the lone AAP legislator in Jammu and Kashmir.

Farooq Abdullah, in a brief statement to the media, confirmed that he was not allowed to meet Singh and said such actions were unnecessary. He also expressed his disapproval of the restrictions placed on Singh and the use of the PSA against Malik.

There has been no official statement yet from the Jammu and Kashmir administration regarding the incident or the reasons for the restrictions. The developments come amid increased political attention to the use of preventive detention laws in the region.

AAP has demanded the immediate release of Mehraj Malik and called for a review of the circumstances under which Singh was restrained in Srinagar. The party has stated it will continue to raise the issue through legal and political channels.

Shiv Sena slams Maharaj Malik’s arrest as attack on Constitutional rights, says move aims to silence opposition voice

Jammu, Sep 11: Shiv Sena (UBT) Jammu Kashmir unit has strongly condemned the detention of AAP MLA from Doda East Assembly seat of Jammu under PSA and called it unconstitutional. Along with this, the house arrest of AAP MP Sanjay Singh in Kashmir has been strongly condemned.

In a press conference held at the party’s state central office, state chief Sahni said that this kind of politics of crushing in democracy is not only a direct violation of the rights granted by the Constitution but is also a suppression of the rights of the people’s representatives.

Sahni alleged that BJP is moving ahead with the single-point goal of suppressing the voice of the opposition and ending democracy in the entire country with the help of its dictatorial policies, directly and indirectly. He told, before Maharaj Malik, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, Hemant Soren, Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Satyendra Jain, Sanjay Singh and countless opposition leaders have been detained with the help of government agencies.

Sahni took a dig at the double standards of BJP and said that under a law like PSA, arrests should have been made of BJP leaders like Vijay Shah who had made objectionable remarks on a Muslim woman army officer. Sahni said that Jammu division has been facing heavy natural disasters for the last few weeks, despite being a Union Territory, the Central Government has not yet announced a relief package for Jammu and Kashmir.

The session of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly is also going to start soon, in such a situation, a situation is being created so that the discussion on restoration of Jammu and Kashmir state status, disaster and other important public issues becomes secondary in the uproar due to Malik’s detention.

Sahni has also advised Maharaj to rein in his talkativeness. On this occasion General Secretary Vikas Bakshi, Raju Kapoor (Co-Chairman), Aditya Mahajan (State Secretary) were present. (KNS)
