Highway closure leaves trucks stranded, Kashmir growers dump rotten apples

0
Restoration work on Jammu-Srinagar highway enters final phase

Srinagar, Sep 11: The prolonged closure of the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway (NH-44) has plunged Kashmir’s horticulture sector into crisis, with the Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union (KVFGDU) estimating losses of nearly Rs 700 crore this season.

Orchardists, traders and truckers say the shutdown has left thousands of fruit-laden trucks stranded, forced farmers to dump rotten produce, and pushed freight charges to unsustainable levels.

Fruit growers said the Mughal Road, which has been opened for six-tyre vehicles, is proving inadequate, as the limited number of trucks has sent freight charges soaring. “Earlier, we used to pay Rs 50 to Rs 60 per apple box when transporting via NH-44. Now, on the Mughal Road, we are charged around Rs 200 per box. This is simply unbearable,” said Abdul Majid, an orchardist from Shopian. “The margins in apple farming are already very low. With freight charges tripling, we are running into losses that we may never recover.”

Bashir Ahmad, another grower from Pulwama, said the crisis has disrupted grading and marketing strategies. “The money we are receiving in outside markets is not even covering the freight charges. Most people have delayed picking up first-grade apples because we cannot afford to take the risk of them rotting in transit,” he said.

At Srinagar’s Parimpora fruit mandi, heaps of rotten apples lie scattered, with growers forced to pay labourers to dump their own produce. “We hired trucks and loaded our apples with a hope. But after being stuck for days on the highway, the fruit came back rotten. Now we spend more money to throw it away,” said Ghulam Nabi, a farmer. “This is the first time I have seen growers paying for the destruction of their own produce,” added Mohammad Yousuf, a Sopore-based trader.

Growers’ union president Bashir Ahmad Basheer warned of a ripple effect on Kashmir’s economy if the highway is not restored on a war footing. “This is the beginning of the season and the loss has increased considerably. Fruit growers can’t bear it. The government must either ensure immediate restoration of smooth traffic on NH-44 or provide adequate transport through Mughal Road at fair rates,” he said.

Truckers stranded for nearly two weeks on the highway also voiced anger and despair. “This is unbearable. These 13 days feel like 13 years. We are sleeping in our trucks, eating whatever we can get, and constantly worrying about our goods rotting,” said Bashir Ahmad, a driver from Anantnag. Others spoke of food shortages, water scarcity and safety risks. “Some of us are surviving on just tea and biscuits. Long halts in isolated areas make us vulnerable to accidents and theft,” said Irfan Malik, a trucker ferrying vegetables from Jammu to Srinagar.

The KVFGDU accused the government of indifference, saying no serious steps are being taken to either restore the highway or provide viable alternatives. “Railway connectivity is there, but no arrangements have been made to transport fruit consignments via train. This apathy has put the livelihood of lakhs of families associated with horticulture at stake,” said Basheer.

Orchardists also criticised restrictions on the Mughal Road. “These vehicles hardly make it beyond Delhi. They don’t reach major markets like Bangalore, Kanpur, or Chennai, which are crucial for our trade,” said Mohammad Ramzan, an orchardist from Pulwama.

Others urged the government to explore long-term alternatives. “If the government arranges goods trains, growers won’t face these repeated crises. This is the least they can do for the sector that is the backbone of our economy,” said Mohammad Amin from Shopian.

Farmers warned that the continuing blockade could cripple Kashmir’s apple industry, considered the backbone of the Valley’s economy, which is already grappling with the effects of climate change, untimely rains, and rising input costs. “Apple is the backbone of Kashmir’s economy. If the government fails to safeguard it, the economic repercussions will be disastrous not only for growers but for the entire Valley,” Basheer said.

The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway remains the only all-weather surface link connecting the Valley with the rest of India. Its frequent closures due to landslides, shooting stones and traffic mismanagement have triggered major economic setbacks over the years. (KNO)

Conservative activist Charlie Kirk shot dead at campus event in US

New Delhi, Sep 11: Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during a public event at Utah Valley University in Orem on Wednesday. He was 31. Kirk, a close ally of President Donald Trump and founder of Turning Point USA, had been addressing a crowd of more than 3,000 people when the fatal shot was fired.

Footage circulating online suggests the shooter may have fired from a rooftop near the event site. Witnesses reported chaotic scenes as attendees fled in panic. Kirk was rushed to hospital by his private security team but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, reports BBC.

Confusion has surrounded the investigation, with officials initially indicating that a suspect was in custody before later clarifying that two men arrested had since been released. Authorities say the gunman remains at large. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the search is ongoing, with police conducting door-to-door checks in the area around the university.

The university has closed its campus through the weekend as heavily armed officers continue to patrol the area. Kirk rose to prominence in his late teens after founding Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organisation, and became a regular presence on US campuses, hosting debates.

He maintained close ties with Trump and his family. Law enforcement officials say CCTV shows a figure dressed in dark clothing on a nearby building, believed to be the source of the gunfire. The suspect has not yet been identified.

PM Modi condemns violation of Qatar’s sovereignty, a day after Israeli attack on Doha targeting Hamas leaders

New Delhi, Sep 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday condemned the violation of Qatar’s sovereignty in the wake of Israel’s air strikes on Doha targeting Hamas leaders that triggered fears of further escalation of the already fragile situation in the region.

The prime minister’s rare criticism directed at Israel came after he spoke to Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani and conveyed India’s “deep concern” at the attacks in Doha.

Israel carried out the air strikes on Qatari capital Doha on Tuesday in the latest in a series of attacks it launched against Syria, Iran and Lebanon. The attack on Doha triggered global outrage.

“Spoke with Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani and expressed deep concern at the attacks in Doha,” Modi said on social media.

“India condemns the violation of the sovereignty of the brotherly State of Qatar. We support resolution of issues through dialogue and diplomacy, and avoiding escalation,” he said.

The prime minister said India “stands firmly” in support of peace and stability in the region, and against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

Following the attack, Hamas said five of its members were killed in the Israeli air strike. However, it said Israel’s attempt to assassinate its leaders “failed”.

Hamas said its negotiating team was holding deliberations to discuss a proposal from the US for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip at a building when the attack took place.

The prime minister’s rebuke came days after India joined other member nations of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in strongly condemning the military strikes by Israel and the US on Iran.

An Indian readout said Prime Minister Modi appreciated the role being played by Qatar in promoting regional peace and stability, including its mediation efforts in Gaza to achieve a ceasefire and release of all hostages.

The prime minister reiterated support for resolution of all issues through dialogue and diplomacy and the need to avoid escalation, it said.

“Sheikh Tamim thanked Prime Minister Modi for the expression of solidarity with the people and the State of Qatar,” it said.

The SCO summit in the Chinese city of Tianjin also condemned actions that have led to numerous casualties among the civilian population and a catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

PM Modi was among the leaders who attended the SCO summit.

“Reiterating their deep concern over the continuing escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the member states strongly condemn the actions that have led to numerous casualties among the civilian population and a catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip,” the SCO declaration said.

It said the SCO leaders noted that the only possible way to ensure peace and stability in the Middle East is through a comprehensive and just settlement of the Palestinian question.

“Member States strongly condemned the military strikes by Israel and the US against the Islamic Republic of Iran in June,” it said.

“Such aggressive actions against civilian targets, including nuclear energy infrastructure, which resulted in the death of civilians, are a gross violation of the principles and norms of international law and the UN Charter, and an infringement on the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” it said.

PM Modi’s comments on Wednesday are seen as very significant. He had previously condemned the deaths of civilians in the Israel-Hamas conflict during a speech in 2023.

“Bharat has condemned the heinous terrorist attack in Israel on October 7. We have also emphasised on dialogue and diplomacy besides restraints,” Modi said in his address at the second Voice of Global South Summit on November 17 that year.

“We strongly condemn the deaths of civilians in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. After talking to President Mahmoud Abbas, we have also sent humanitarian aid to the people of Palestine. It is time that the countries of the Global South speak with one voice for the greater global good,” he had said.

Israel has been continuing its military offensive in Gaza as part of its retaliation against the unprecedented attack on Israeli cities by Hamas on October 7.

Hamas killed around 1,200 people in Israel and kidnapped more than 220 others, some of whom were released during a brief ceasefire.

Over 60,000 people have been killed in Gaza in the Israeli offensive, according to the Hamas-run authorities in Gaza.

India has been calling for de-escalation of the situation and creating conditions for an early resumption of direct peace negotiations towards a two-state solution to the Palestine issue.

India has strong economic ties with Qatar, which is home to more than 8,30,000 Indian nationals. Qatar is also India’s largest LNG supplier.

PM Modi and Sheikh Tamim also expressed satisfaction at the sustained progress in the India-Qatar Strategic Partnership and reiterated their commitment to advance bilateral cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, the Indian readout said.

New Delhi, Sep 10: Charlie Kirk, the powerful rightwing activist, Trump ally and executive director of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), has been shot on Wednesday while hosting an event in Utah.

In video posts circulating on social media, Kirk can be seen getting struck while speaking and sitting beneath a tent in the Utah Valley University courtyard. Kirk was there as part of The American Comeback Tour, which is hosted by the TPUSA chapter at Utah Valley. There is also video footage of students on campus running away from the sound of gunshots, The Guardian reported.

The TPUSA press team confirmed to Fox News that Kirk had been shot, but that his condition was unknown.

The Utah governor, Spencer Cox, posted on X that he would “continue to share updates” and that “those responsible will be held fully accountable”.

“Violence has no place in our public life. Americans of every political persuasion must unite in condemning this act. Our prayers are with Charlie, his family, and all those affected,” he wrote.

Mike Lee, a Utah senator, posted on X shortly after reports broke that Kirk had been shot to say he is “tracking the situation at Utah Valley University closely. Please join me in praying for Charlie Kirk and the students gathered there.”

Ashley Moody, another Utah senator, also posted on X to say her “office is monitoring the situation at Utah Valley University. I pray for Charlie Kirk, the students, and this nation.”

A spokesperson with Utah Valley University police confirmed to the Guardian that shots were fired on campus.

“What we know currently is that Charlie Kirk was about 20 minutes into his presentation when we heard shots fired from a nearby building and to the best of our knowledge he was hit and taken with his security team away from the premises, and the courtyard was cleared,” a UVU spokesperson told CNBC.

Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social: “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!”

JD Vance, the vice-president, tweeted: “Say a prayer for Charlie Kirk, a genuinely good guy and a young father.” Those sentiments were echoed by the secretary of defense, Pete Hegseth: “Prayers for Charlie Kirk. An incredible Christian, American, and human being. May the healing hand of Jesus Christ be upon him.”

The FBI director, Kash Patel, said the FBI is “closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting involving Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University … Agents will be on the scene quickly and the FBI stands in full support of the ongoing response and investigation.”

The shooting was quickly condemned by the California governor, Gavin Newsom, who said “the attack on Charlie Kirk” was “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible. In the United States of America, we must reject political violence in EVERY form.”

Shortly before shots rang out, Kirk tweeted: “WE. ARE. SO. BACK. Utah Valley University is FIRED UP and READY for the first stop back on the American Comeback Tour.”
