Thinnest design yet, but is it more than just a refresh?

Thinnest design yet, but is it more than just a refresh?

Srinagar, Sept 10: Apple has unveiled its latest iPhone line-up, led by the new iPhone Air—its thinnest model yet, replacing the Plus. The launch emphasizes design, efficiency, and ecosystem integration rather than radical innovation. Hardware upgrades include the new A19 chip, a 48MP camera, brighter displays, and improved power efficiency, while the Pro model gets a price hike with Ceramic Shield casing and more RAM.

The iPhone Air is the slimmest iPhone to date. Its redesigned camera plateau accommodates the cameras, chipset, and system modules, while the remaining space houses a high-density battery for all-day usage. AI-powered photography and battery optimization software enable performance comparable to larger models.

According to analysts at Wedbush, it is estimated that around 315 million iPhone users worldwide are using devices more than four years old, presenting a large potential market for upgrades. The firm projects Apple’s revenue to rise from $391 billion in 2024 to $431 billion by 2026.
As per reports, revenue is expected to grow from $391 billion in the 2024 financial year to $431 billion by 2026. Earnings per share (EPS) are forecast to rise to $7.85 over the same period, from $6.75 in 2024.

Alongside the iPhone Air, Apple unveiled the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, featuring upgraded cameras, the new Apple A19 Pro chip, and larger displays. The iPhone 17 range includes a new A19 chip, a 48MP camera and a display bright enough to be legible even in strong sunlight.

The iPhone 17 Pro gets a price rise to $1,099, justified, apparently, by a Ceramic Shield casing on both sides and upgraded chips with more RAM along with new accessories including a cross-body strap and an updated MagSafe battery pack.

The Indian market will see multiple storage options and new colour variants, with pre-orders expected to open soon. Apple is ramping up iPhone production in India to offset tariff challenges in China, a shift Wedbush estimates could pose a $1 billion drag in the September quarter. Meanwhile, intensifying competition from local brands and broader economic headwinds continue to pressure Apple’s market share in China.

Apple unveils its latest iPhone lineup amid Trump’s trade war

Apple unveils its latest iPhone lineup amid Trump's trade war

Washington, Sep 10: Apple has unveiled its new iPhone 17 lineup, along with updates to its digital watches and AirPod products at its annual September product launch.

The new iPhones are the first to be released since President Donald Trump returned to the White House and unleashed a barrage of tariffs, in what his administration says is an attempt to bring overseas manufacturing back to the US — a crusade that has thrust Apple CEO Tim Cook into the hot seat.

The new devices come with a larger, 6.3-inch display and is powered by a new A19 chip to help power Apple’s AI features. The iPhone 17’s front camera has also been upgraded to have a wider field of view and new sensor, allowing you to take landscape photos without having to rotate your phone

The new devices are still expected to be made in Apple’s manufacturing hubs in China and India, much to the Trump administration’s consternation.

Both Trump and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick have repeatedly insisted that iPhones be made in the US instead of overseas. It’s an unrealistic demand that analysts say would take years to pull off and would result in a doubling, or even a tripling, of the iPhone’s current average price of about USD 1,000.

Cook tried to placate Trump by initially pledging that Apple would invest USD 500 billion in the US over the next four years, and then upped the ante last month by adding another USD 100 billion to the commitment. He also gifted Trump a statue featuring a 24-karat gold base.

That kind of diplomacy has helped insulate Apple from Trump’s most severe tariffs. However, the iPhones being brought into the US still face duties of about 25 per cent, stoking speculation that the company will reveal its first across-the-board price increase in five years in an effort to preserve its hefty profit margins.

Since 2020, Apple has charged USD 800 for its basic iPhone and USD 1,200 for its top offering, but analysts now believe the company may raise prices by USD 50 to USD 100 on some of the new models. If Apple does announce price increases, it will come just weeks after Google held steady on prices for its new Pixel smartphones.

Although Apple’s stock price is still down by 4 per cent so far this year, the shares have been bouncing back in recent months amid signs it won’t be as hard hit by the tariffs as once feared, and a highly anticipated court ruling cleared the way for the company to continue receiving USD 20 billion annually to lock in Google’s search engine as the default option on iPhones.

Malik's detention under PSA unconstitutional: AAP MP Sanjay Singh

Jammu, Sep 10: AAP MP Sanjay Singh on Wednesday condemned as “illegal” and “unconstitutional” the detention of party MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act, and accused the authorities of misusing a law intended for terrorists against an elected representative.

Malik, who is also the president of the J-K unit of AAP, was detained on Monday under the stringent law for allegedly disturbing public order in Doda district and was subsequently lodged in Kathua district jail.

“This (slapping PSA against Malik) is illegal and unconstitutional. It is an attempt to silence the voice of an elected member. Slapping PSA is hundred percent wrong,” Singh, who arrived here with senior AAP leader Imran Hussain, told reporters.

Singh said, “The section used against terrorists has been slapped on an elected member for raising voice for the people of his constituency. It is very wrong.”

“We will fight this injustice on the streets, in Parliament, and, if necessary, in the Supreme Court,” he said while accusing the BJP government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of targeting the AAP by employing repressive tactics.

“They have previously jailed Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain, and even me. Today, Mehraj Malik has been imprisoned,” he said.

The AAP leader said they are in Jammu to meet with party workers and strategise the next steps in their protest against “political victimisation”.

At least eight police personnel, including two officers, were injured in clashes between protesters and security forces in Doda as demonstrations were held in the district and other places in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday against the detention of Malik.

PSA slapped on Mehraj Malik to divert attention from Hazratbal incident: Mehbooba

PSA slapped on Mehraj Malik to divert attention from Hazratbal incident: Mehbooba

Srinagar, Sep 10: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday urged the administration led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to release those detained in connection with the Hazratbal shrine incident, along with sitting Doda MLA Mehraj Malik who is under detention.

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Mehbooba said the use of the Public Safety Act (PSA) against an elected representative was unjustified. “PSA is not warranted for a people’s representative even if he has used some offensive language against government officials. Such arrests erode democracy and restrict people from expressing themselves,” she said.

Mehbooba alleged that the arrest of Mehraj Malik was aimed at diverting public attention from the Hazratbal shrine incident. “The sitting MLA has been detained simply to shift focus. This approach is not democratic,” she remarked.

She further said that Jammu and Kashmir should draw lessons from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal, where, according to her, restrictions on people’s voices led to serious consequences. [KNT]

Ranvir Shorey on India-Pakistan match

Not bilateral series, but Asia Cup fixture fine: Ranvir Shorey on India-Pakistan match

New Delhi, Sep 10: Bollywood actor Ranvir Shorey has weighed in on the debate surrounding cricketing ties between India and Pakistan, saying he has no objection to the two teams facing each other in multi-nation tournaments such as the Asia Cup.

In a casual interaction with IANS, Shorey clarified that while he remains opposed to the resumption of bilateral series between the arch-rivals, he sees no issue with their clashes on neutral grounds in international competitions.

“I have no problem with India playing Pakistan in the Asia Cup. Of course, there shouldn’t be a bilateral series with them. India is not going to Pakistan, and Pakistan is not coming here—that’s fine. Since the match is being played in a neutral country, there shouldn’t be any issue. After all, just like in the Olympics, if India faces Pakistan, you can’t deny that fixture,” Shorey said.

India and Pakistan last played a bilateral series in 2012–13, with political tensions and security concerns halting cricketing exchanges since then. Their meetings are now restricted to ICC and ACC events, which continue to attract massive global viewership.

Shorey, known for his candid takes on social and political matters, drew a parallel between cricket and other international sports, where athletes from both nations regularly compete. “It should be treated the same way as the Olympics or Asian Games, where India and Pakistan players inevitably cross paths,” he added.

His remarks come at a time when tournaments like the Asia Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy once again put the India-Pakistan cricketing equation under the spotlight. While the broader political debate remains unresolved, Shorey’s pragmatic stance echoes the views of many fans who relish the rivalry on the field but remain wary of a full-fledged bilateral revival.

AAP vows legal, political battle against MLA Mehraj Malik’s detention

Jammu, Sep 10: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Member of Parliament Sanjay Singh on Wednesday strongly criticised the detention of Doda MLA Mehraj Malik under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act (PSA), terming it “unconstitutional” and an attack on democratic rights.

Malik, a legislator from Doda, was booked on Monday under the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978, on grounds that his activities were prejudicial to the maintenance of public order. Officials said preventive detention was found necessary to safeguard law and order in the region.

Addressing media in Jammu, Singh said the AAP would launch a multi-pronged fight against Malik’s detention. “It is unconstitutional to slap the Public Safety Act on AAP’s Doda MLA, Mehraj Malik. This is the government’s anti-people mindset, a man was asking for a hospital and you slapped PSA on him,” Singh said.

He added that the party would take the matter to the “sadak” (streets), the “sadan” (Parliament), and, if needed, to the Supreme Court. “BJP and the Prime Minister are always after AAP. That is what is happening with us. We will take up this matter strongly,” he alleged.

Earlier in the day, Singh arrived in Jammu and met party leaders to review the next steps. He said AAP would intensify its campaign both in Jammu and Kashmir and at the national level to challenge the detention. [KNT]

India asks its citizens to defer travel to Nepal until situation stabilises

New Delhi, Sep 10: In the wake of unrest in Nepal, India on Tuesday asked its citizens to defer travel to the neighbouring country until the situation stabilises.

Issuing an advisory, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also asked Indian citizens presently in Nepal to avoid going out on the streets and to exercise all due caution.

“In view of the developing situation in Nepal, Indian citizens are advised to defer travel there until the situation has stabilised. Indian citizens presently in Nepal are advised to shelter in their current places of residence, avoid going out onto the streets and exercise all due caution,” the MEA said.

Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday in the face of massive anti-government protests sparked by a ban on social media, with the demonstrators attacking private residences of several top politicians, including President Ramchandra Paudel, and vandalising the parliament.

Though the Nepal government on Monday night revoked its ban on social media websites following the protests led by ‘Gen Z’ youths, the agitators continued their demonstration against corruption while demanding accountability for the death of 19 people in police action against protesters.

The MEA advised Indian nationals to follow local safety advisories from Nepal authorities as well as the Embassy of India in Kathmandu.

“In case of any assistance required, please call the Embassy of India, Kathmandu, on the following helpline numbers:977 – 980 860 2881; 977 – 981 032 6134,” it said.

India has said it was deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives during the protests in Nepal and expressed the hope that the issues would be resolved through peaceful means.

Air India, IndiGo and Nepal Airlines cancelled their flights from Delhi to Kathmandu on Tuesday amid the anti-government protests.
