Patients suffer in absence of intervention cardiology at GMC Baramulla

GMC Baramulla prohibits MRs from visiting prior 3:30 PM

Baramulla, Sep 9: Scores of patients across North Kashmir are keenly waiting for the setup of a cardiology department at Government Medical College Baramulla, especially those who require pacemaker implant.

Although, the authorities at the GMC Baramulla are hopeful that the institution will be soon allotted a cathlab which will ensure a dedicated cardiology department that will take care of severe cardiac ailments.

The absence of a intervention cardiologist is believed to be a big hurdle in performing the pacemaker implant procedures. During the year, 2023-24, in the presence of a specialist cardiologist, the institution performed around 30 pacemaker implantation procedures. However, the facility has since come to a standstill after the departure of the former cardiologist, leaving patients in deep distress.

Following the cardiologist’s exit to another institution, GMC Baramulla remained without a specialist for several months, halting all pacemaker-related procedures.

Although a new cardiologist has recently been appointed, however, the intervention cardiology procedures could not be started.

“Since the departure of the consultant cardiology last year, not a single pacemaker has been implanted in GMC Baramulla. There is immediate need of a cardiology consultant besides a cath lab and complete cardiology department,” said Imran Nazir, a civil society member of Baramulla.

The disruption has triggered concern among patients and attendants, many of whom accuse the administration of negligence in ensuring continuity of life-saving procedures.

Muhammad Ashraf, a resident of Baramulla town while expressing his concern over the issue said that the absence of a functional cardiology department at GMC Baramulla not only burdens patients financially but also puts lives at risk, as pacemaker implantation is often an emergency requirement.

“Recently, one of our relative suffered heartattack. He was immediately rushed to the GMC Baramulla but was latter shifted to Srinagar hospital where a pacemaker was implanted on him. We need such facility at our own place so that the patients Golden time is not wasted,” said Ashraf.

The Principal Government Medical College Baramulla, Prof. Dr Majid Jahangir said that “we don’t have a intervention cardiologist available, however, very soon a full cardiology department will be setup at the GMC Baramulla.” “The authorities are mulling to establish a cathlab at GMC Baramulla which will pave way for establishment of a complete cardiology department,” said Principal GMC Baramulla.

New Delhi, Sep 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a financial assistance of Rs 3100 crore for flood-hit states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.

He announced financial assistance of Rs 1600 crore for Punjab, in addition to the Rs 12,000 crore already available with the state.

The PM also ordered the advance release of the second installment of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and benefits under the PM-Kisan scheme.

He outlined a multi-pronged recovery plan, including rebuilding damaged homes under the PM Awas Yojana, restoring roads and schools, supporting farmers through the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, and promoting solar-powered irrigation.

PM Modi said that assistance would also be extended for livestock support, water harvesting structures, and reconstruction of rural houses and government schools.

He announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives and Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured.

“Children orphaned by the disaster will be supported under the PM CARES for Children scheme,” the PM said.

He expressed condolences to the bereaved families, assured close coordination between the Centre and the state, and praised the efforts of NDRF, SDRF, the Army, and local authorities in relief work.

Visiting Himachal Pradesh to review the flood situation and assess the damage caused by cloudbursts, rains, and landslides in affected areas, PM Modi first conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas of the state.

Thereafter, he had an official meeting in Kangra to review the relief and rehabilitation measures undertaken as well as assess the damage that had occurred in Himachal Pradesh.

Announcing a financial assistance of Rs 1500 crore for Himachal Pradesh, the PM said that there would be an advance release of the second instalment of SDRF and PM Kisan Samman Nidhi.

He asked for a multi-dimensional view to be taken to get the entire region and people back on its feet.

“These will be done through multiple ways, like rebuilding homes through PM Awas Yojana, restoration of national highways, rebuilding schools, provision of relief under PMNRF, along with release of mini kits for livestock,” PM Modi said. “Recognising the critical need to support the agricultural community, additional assistance will be provided specifically targeted at farmers who currently lack power connections.”

He said that geotagging of damaged houses would be done under the PM Awas Yojana.

“This will help in accurate damage assessment and faster delivery of aid to those affected,” the PM said. “To ensure uninterrupted education, schools will be able to report and geotag damages, enabling timely assistance under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan.”

He said that the construction of recharge structures for water harvesting will be done to help collect and store rainwater.

“These efforts will improve groundwater levels and support better water management,” PM Modi said.

The Centre has already sent Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) to visit Himachal Pradesh to assess the extent of damage, and based on their detailed report, further assistance would be considered.

The PM also met families who were affected by the calamity.

He expressed his condolences and deep sorrow to the family members of those who have lost their lives.

PM Modi said that the Centre would work closely with the state government at this difficult time and extend all possible assistance.

PM Modi said that all assistance under disaster management rules was being made, including advance disbursements to the states.

He appreciated the efforts of the personnel of NDRF, SDRF, the Army, the state administration, and other service-oriented organisations for making efforts in immediate relief and response.

“The Centre will further review the assessment based on the memorandum of the state as well as the report of the central teams,” the PM said.

He acknowledged the gravity of the situation and assured that the Centre would make all efforts to address the situation.

Kashmir’s walnut harvest in full swing amid challenges

0
Kashmir’s walnut harvest in full swing amid challenges

Srinagar, Sep 09: As September unfolds, Kashmir’s walnut season shifts into full swing, not just in Srinagar’s Harwan area but across orchards and wild groves throughout the valley.

In places like Anantnag, Pulwama and Kupwara, farmers also harvest larger tonnes of walnuts, making J&K responsible for over 90% of India’s walnut production.

As per the details obtained by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the major production hubs include Anantnag, Kupwara and Pulwama, along with other key areas such as Shopian, Baramulla, Budgam, Srinagar and Ganderbal.

In Anantnag’s beautiful valleys and Budgam’s orchards, especially in places like Kandiwara, Kokernag and Ashmuqam, walnut harvesting is not just a task, but a seasonal pulse.

The traditional method remains unchanged, as skilled “walnut thrashers” climb trees barefoot, wielding long cedar or willow sticks to knock down the ripe walnuts—a sight repeated across valleys and streamsides, in managed groves and wild patches alike.

“This rustic method carries peril. Climbers often fall from heights of 30–45 metres, risking spinal injuries, paralysis, or even death,” the locals from Srinagar’s Harwan told KNO, while speaking about the risks of this harvest.

They said that once down, walnuts are gathered, de-husked, washed, dried in the sun, and manually shelled, often turning into a community effort involving entire families.

Despite the organic purity and distinct Wonth, Kaghazi, and Barzul varieties, Kashmiri walnuts face diminishing demand as they are now often overshadowed by cheaper, mass-produced imports from California, Chile, and China.

Meanwhile, the growers cite the lack of processing facilities, packaging support, and state-backed market access as key obstacles. They said that in places like Pulwama, many must transport their walnuts to Jammu for sale, adding to labour and logistical costs, yet receiving meagre returns. This time, as the road is closed, that too remained shortened.
