Vice President election today

Vice President election today

Jammu, Sep 8: Six Members of Parliament (MPs) from Jammu and Kashmir and one MP from Ladakh Union Territory will vote to elect a new Vice President of India tomorrow in the Vice Presidential election, 2025.

National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate C P Radhakrishnan is pitched against the opposition INDIA bloc candidate P Sudershan Reddy.

The election was necessitated after Jagdeep Dhankhar, in a surprise move, tendered his resignation on July 21, 2025.

On August 7, the Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a notification for the Vice-Presidential Election 2025, under sub-sections (4) and (1) of Section 4 of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952.

As per the notification, the poll will be taken between 10 am and 5 pm at Room No F-101, Vasudha, First Floor, Parliament House, New Delhi.

The counting will be held on the same day.

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members form the electoral college for the election. In the case of J&K, there are five MPs in the Lok Sabha.

Jitendra Singh and Jugal Kishore Sharma are from the BJP, whose vote will go for the NDA candidate. While Mian Altaf and Aga Syed Ruhullah represent the National Conference in the Lok Sabha. NC is part of the INDIA bloc.

The fifth MP from J&K is Engineer Rashid, representing the Baramulla LS constituency as an independent. Suspense remains intact on his choice of candidate, given his past maverick record.

In the case of Jammu and Kashmir, there will be no representation from the elected Rajya Sabha members as their seats remain vacant since February 2021.

Gulam Ali Khatana, the BJP MP, though is from Rajya Sabha, yet he is a nominated member. Nominated members also have voting rights.

Given this equation, both the NDA and the INDIA bloc candidates are sure to get two votes each of the LS MPs. Chances of a third vote remain in the realm of speculation till the voting is over and the votes are counted.

From the neighbouring Union Territory of Ladakh, which has just one MP Haji Hanifa Jan, who contested as an independent. However, it is not difficult to presume that his loyalties still lie with his erstwhile party, the National Conference.

Thus, in any case, if things go as per known affiliations, both the INDIA Bloc and NDA are likely to get an equal number of votes from J&K and Ladakh – three each.

However, Baramulla MP may tilt the balance as he may keep everyone guessing till the end.

First cancer vaccine Enteromix creates buzz across globe

Personalised cancer vaccines can slow down tumour recurrence: Study

Srinagar, Sep 8: Amidst a barrage of bad news this year, Russia has shared news hailed as a medical breakthrough, a development that could change the fates in years to come. An mRNA-based cancer vaccine, named Enteromix, according to Russian health officials, has achieved remarkable results in early clinical trials.

The vaccine promises ‘100% efficacy’ in targeting colorectal cancer and significant tumor regression in some other cancers.

The vaccine has been developed by the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA) and the Gamaleya Center. Apart from Colorectal cancers, it has also been tested on other tumors like melanoma and glioblastoma. It will be available for wider clinical use by late 2025, as per the announcements. Treatment will be provided free of charge to Russian patients. The development is being hailed as a milestone in personalized medicine – where the vaccine is tailored to an individual’s tumor mutations using mRNA technology. Russia has highlighted three years of trials and stated that the vaccine has “safety and high efficacy”.

Results of 60-80 per cent tumor shrinkage and improved survival rates have taken the world by storm.

Prof. Omar Javed Shah, former Director SKIMS Soura and a Gastroenterologist of international repute echoed cautious optimism. “It is a development worth celebrating and a significant step in personalized cancer therapy. However, it is crucial to recognize its major limitations – it’s inability to prevent cancer,” he said. He said the vaccine has the potential to treat cancers such as melanoma (skin cancer), glioblastoma (malignant brain tumor) and colorectal cancers which affect millions of people worldwide. Prof Shah hoped for more research into cancer treatments, especially cancers linked to Gastrointestinal tract, that have plagued J&K especially. “The vaccine, it is said, has the ability to regress the highly malignant tumors by up to 80%,” he said, adding that it holds great promise for personalized cancer treatment. “These findings could herald a major breakthrough in the treatment of cancer.”

However, the announcement has also been met with skepticism from many international experts. Some have called it “too good to be true” without peer-reviewed data or independent verification. Professor Kingston Mills, a prominent immunologist, has expressed doubtabout the claims regarding efficacy, in absence of peer reviewed literature. He has stated that while mRNA vaccines show promise, Russia’s rapid rollout raises concerns given the lack of published scientific papers.

Russia has positioned Enteromix as a world-first mRNA cancer vaccine. Some critics however call this claim misleading stating that many multinational pharma giants like Moderna, BioNTech, and Merck are also in the concluding phases of their trials of similar vaccines. The news however has signaled a fresh wave of efforts to tailor-treat cancers. Whether Enteromix will live up to the hype? Only time and data can tell.

BSF arrests Pak intruder at R S Pura IB

Jammu, Sep 8: Border Security Force (BSF) personnel arrested a Pakistani national when he, after infiltrating through the International Border (IB), was trying to breach the border fence in the R S Pura sector in the Jammu district late Sunday evening.

When, even after warning, he did not stop, BSF troops opened fire on him and later took him into custody. After a preliminary investigation, he was handed over to the police.

As per BSF officials, a protest, in this connection, was being lodged with their counterparts, the Pakistan Rangers.

“On September 7, 2025, at about 9.10 pm, BSF troops observed suspicious movement wherein a Pak national was observed crossing the IB and approaching aggressively towards the border fence in tehsil Suchetgarh, Jammu. He was warned by alert troops, but he paid no heed,” PRO BSF Jammu said.

Redesign of old Habba Kadal bridge sparks anger

Redesign of old Habba Kadal bridge sparks anger

Srinagar, Sep 08: Barely a year after its inauguration, the Habba Kadal Bridge in Srinagar, rebuilt under the much-hyped Smart City project, is now facing a storm of criticism from locals and pedestrians, who allege the structure has turned into “both a safety and a security concern.”

Earlier the administration had announced plans to redesign the bridge into a pedestrian-only zone with gazebos, seating and heritage-style architecture, similar to the Zero Bridge model. But, the locals argue that instead of beautification, authorities should first address what they call “serious ground problems.”

Locals from Habba Kadal Srinagar told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that there are cracks in the bridge’s wooden flooring.

“The bridge is beautiful, but I don’t feel safe walking here. It looks weak and any accident could happen. The administration must treat this as a serious safety issue,” said Muntazir, a commuter.

Another local said authorities must take the matter as seriously and look into this before any possible accident.

Moreover, residents also alleged that the bridge has become a “toxic space” during late evening and night hours. “Youth gather here late in the evenings. Instead of being a family-friendly public space, it has become a spot for unwanted activities,” said another resident.

Spending crores to boost commerce and connectivity in Downtown Srinagar, the bridge has instead sparked controversy and skepticism.

Community members say repeated failures in construction quality have raised questions over the city’s infrastructure planning. “They need to fix the cracks, ensure safety, and address ‘unwanted activities’ concerns before talking about redesigning or beautifying. Otherwise, it feels like money is being wasted while our livelihoods suffer,” said another resident.

‘Is demanding hospital a crime?’ Kejriwal slams detention of AAP MLA in J&K under PSA

‘Is demanding hospital a crime?’ Kejriwal slams detention of AAP MLA in J&K under PSA

New Delhi, Sep 08: AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal on Monday slammed the detention of the party’s lone MLA in Jammu and Kashmir, Mehraj Malik, under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA), saying he was raising his voice for the rights of people of his constituency.

“Is demanding a hospital for the people of your area such a grave crime that an elected MLA has to be thrown in jail for it? Mehraj Malik is the lion of the Aam Aadmi Party,” Kejriwal said in a post on X in Hindi.

“He will always remain the voice of the people, fighting for their rights. Jail, threats, and conspiracies… none of these can ever scare any soldier of AAP,” the Aam Aadmi Party national convenor said.

The 37-year-old AAP MLA was detained on Monday under the PSA for allegedly disturbing public order in Doda district, amid a protest against the legislator by government employees who accused him of launching a disparaging campaign against the deputy commissioner.

This is for the first time that a sitting MLA has been taken into custody under the PSA, a law that allows detention without charge or trial for up to two years in some cases.

Officials said the MLA from Doda was detained by police at Dak Bungalow while he was planning to visit flood-hit areas of his constituency. He was later shifted to Bhaderwah district jail on the orders of the deputy commissioner of Doda after police prepared a dossier against him.

Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia also lashed out at the Centre, describing Malik’s detention as “the open dictatorship of the Modi-Shah government which is seeped in hunger for power”.

In a post on X, he said those raising their voice for people’s rights were being treated as a threat, but “history is witness, whenever dictatorship increases, the revolution gains momentum .”

Before being shifted to jail, Malik uploaded a video claiming he was being prevented from meeting people affected by flash floods and torrential rains.

“There are many areas in my constituency which are without road connectivity, ration and shelter after their homes were damaged but I am being detained here,” he said.

In the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls, Malik won the Doda seat by over 4,500 votes, securing AAP’s first-ever victory in the Union territory.

“Today’s occasion is also an opportunity for self-analysis, self-exploration, and self-introspection. I am proud of the exceptional accomplishments of our universities in the recently released NIRF-2025 Rankings. While on one hand these rankings should be seen as a revolution, a transformation in the higher education landscape of Jammu Kashmir, on the other, we should critically evaluate our rankings and go back to the drawing board to set new goals,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

He observed that the process of change in the campus should continue uninterrupted so that the students remain determined, eager to learn and do something new and have the passion to face the future challenges.

“Real world experience bridges the gap between theory and application.
