Internet disruptions across South Asia, Middle East as Red sea cable damage hit global traffic

Srinagar, Sept 08: Internet users across India, Pakistan, and parts of the Middle East experienced major disruptions after subsea cable systems in the Red Sea were damaged, internet observatory NetBlocks reported. The Red Sea region is a major hub for undersea fibre-optic cables that carry a significant portion of global internet traffic.

According to Reuters, the outage also affected the United Arab Emirates, where users of Etisalat and Du faced difficulties accessing online services. NetBlocks traced the disruption to cable failures near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

According to reports Microsoft confirmed that its cloud computing platform, Azure, was among the services affected by the incident. In a statement released on Saturday, Microsoft said Azure users could experience higher latency because of “multiple undersea fibre cuts in the Red Sea.”
To reduce the impact of the outage, Microsoft has rerouted traffic through alternative paths outside the Middle East, Reuters reported.

The company clarified that while users may experience delays in internet traffic passing through the region, its global services remain unaffected. “We do expect higher latency on some traffic that previously traversed the Middle East. Network traffic that does not pass through the region is not impacted,” Microsoft said.

The incident underscores the fragility of global digital infrastructure that relies heavily on undersea cables.

SC directs EC to include Aadhaar as 12th prescribed document for Bihar SIR

SC to hear on July 24 Maharashtra govt’s plea against Bombay HC verdict SC-Train blast

New Delhi, Sep 08: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Election Commission to include Aadhaar as a 12th prescribed document for establishing the identity of a voter in special intensive revision (SIR) exercise of electoral roll in poll-bound Bihar.

At the moment for Bihar SIR, there are 11 prescribed documents which electors have to submit with their enumeration forms.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi, however, clarified Aadhaar will not be a proof of citizenship and the commission can ascertain the genuineness of Aadhaar card number submitted by an elector for inclusion in the electoral roll.

Observing nobody wants the EC to include illegal immigrants in the electoral roll, the bench said it should be clear that only genuine citizens will be allowed to vote and those claiming to be genuine on the basis of forged documents will be excluded from the electoral roll.

The bench asked the poll panel to issue necessary directions during the course of the day for acceptance of Aadhaar as a document for proof of identity.

The top court also sought EC’s explanation on showcause notices it issued to poll officials for not accepting Aadhaar card from the voters.

Senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing for poll panel, submitted 99.6 per cent of the 7.24 crore voters in the draft roll had submitted documents and petitioners seeking inclusion of Aadhaar as 12th document would not serve any practical purpose.

The bench referred to provisions of Aadhaar Act of 2016 and the Representation of Peoples Act and said that it not a proof of citizenship but can be considered as a proof of identity.

On September 1, the top court, while hearing some applications filed by political parties for extension of deadlines, was informed by the poll panel that claims, objections and corrections in the draft electoral roll prepared in Bihar under the SIR exercise can be filed beyond September 1 but these would be considered once the electoral roll is finalised.

It said claims and objections in the draft roll can be filed till the last date of nomination forms in each assembly constituency.

The top court also termed the confusion over the Bihar SIR as “largely a trust issue” and directed the state legal service authority to deploy paralegal volunteers to assist individual voters and political parties in filing claims and objections to the draft roll, which was published on August 1.

The poll panel, which opposed any extension of the September 1 deadline for filing of claims and objections as per the SIR schedule, had submitted that post the top court’s August 22 order, till August 30, only 22,723 claims had been filed for inclusion and 1,34,738 objections had been filed for exclusion.

According to the June 24 schedule of the poll panel for the Bihar SIR, the deadline for filing claims and objections to the draft roll ended on September 1, and the final electoral roll will be published on September 30.

Israeli Supreme court rules govt deliberately denying food to Palestinian prisoners

Gaza’s children face dire crisis as aid blockade enters sixth week: UNICEF warns of rising risk of death, disease

Srinagar, Sept 08: In a rare ruling, Israel’s Supreme Court has stated that the government is deliberately denying thousands of Palestinian prisoners the minimum food required for daily subsistence amid the ongoing war on Gaza.

The three-judge panel, which has largely avoided challenging the government or military throughout the 23 months of conflict in the besieged and heavily bombarded territory, took up the matter following a petition filed by two Israeli human rights groups.

“We are not speaking here of comfortable living or luxury, but of the basic conditions of survival as required by law,” the ruling said.

As per reports, it ruled unanimously on Sunday that the Israeli government had a legal duty to provide Palestinian prisoners with three meals a day to ensure “a basic level of existence” and ordered authorities to fulfil that obligation.

Formerly released prisoners have reported harsh conditions in Israeli military detention, citing torture, abuse, starvation, denial of medical care, overcrowding, and disease.

According to Palestinian authorities, they have recorded the deaths at least 61 Palestinians in Israeli custody since the war started. In March, a 17-year-old Palestinian in Israeli prison died of what doctors said was likely starvation as per various reports.

As per reports, in a two-to-one ruling, the court upheld a petition filed last year by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) and Gisha, agreeing that the government’s deliberate restriction of food in detention facilities has subjected Palestinian prisoners to malnutrition and starvation.

Train services suspended from Udhampur to Pathankot amid heavy rainfall

Jammu, Sep 08: The Northern Railways on Monday started a special local train service between Katra and Sangaldan to facilitate stranded passengers in the wake of the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Udhampur district.

This is the first-ever local train from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi railway station in Reasi district to Sangaldan railway station in Ramban, aimed at ferrying hundreds of people stranded in Jammu and Ramban belts due to the highway closure, besides facilitating students, and employees between these areas.

The train track distance between Katra and Sangaldan is 63 km and commuters will be charged only Rs 20.

The two local passenger trains will connect twin stations via Reasi, Bakkal, and Dugga stations, and back, from September 8 to September 12, a railway official said.

“On the request of the administration, the Railways Board decided to run the train service for five days to facilitate stranded passengers, patients with health issues, and others in the area. So the first train left Katra for Sangaldan at 8:40 am,” a senior railway official said.

He said on the first day, 464 passengers departed from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi station for Sangaldan railway station, where where train will return at 2 PM.

With roads blocked due to landslides, this five-coach train offers a much-needed lifeline for locals and pilgrims. A large number of passengers have been stranded in Reasi, Jammu, Ramban, Doda, and Kishtwar districts due to the closure of highways and roads.

“We thank the railways and administration for running the trains to facilitate our journey home. We were stranded in Jammu for nine days. The highway was closed. Today, we are happy to leave for home in Sangaldan,” Rafi Mohammad, a local travelling by the train, said.

Similarly, Zeenat Begum, who was stranded after her surgery in Jammu for over one week, is happy to return home to Banihal. “We are very happy. We thank the railways. It is a great relief for us,” she said.

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh appreciated the move by the railways, and said on X, “In the absence of road connectivity beyond Udhampur, arrangements have been made to carry essentials via the newly introduced Special Local Passenger Train from Katra to Ramban Sangaldan.”

He added that these essentials can thereafter be transported by road to the Doda and Kishtwar districts.

Singh said the weather seems clear, and highway authorities are working round-the-clock to clear the national highway blockade at Thard and Bali Nallah. “Hopefully by late evening, it may be possible to allow traffic movement,” he said.

Normal train traffic has been disrupted in Jammu and Kashmir since August 26 after heavy rains and flash floods in the Union Territory.

So far, Northern Railway has announced the restoration of 21 trains.

Sakina Itoo demand release of detainees, says emblem inside shrine hurt people's sentiments

Srinagar, Sep 08: Education Minister and senior National Conference leader Sakina Itoo on Monday strongly reacted to the controversy over the installation of a plaque with the Ashoka emblem at the revered Hazratbal shrine, saying the move has deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the people.

Speaking to reporters, Itoo said it was unjustified to label everyone in Kashmir as a militant. She demanded the release of those arrested in connection with the protests, remarking that those who have militancy backgrounds themselves cannot brand the entire population as militants.

The minister as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust said that dictatorship must end in Jammu and Kashmir, and people’s religious and emotional sensitivities should be respected. “Hazratbal is our pride. By installing a plaque with the emblem there, people’s sentiments have been hurt. Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, who developed Hazratbal, never installed any stone there. How is it possible now to put up a plaque with an emblem,” she asked.

Sakina Itoo reiterated that the government should listen to the voice of the people and avoid taking steps that disturb peace and harmony at sacred places. [KNT]

Vaishno Devi yatra remains suspended for 14th consecutive day

Vaishno Devi Board denies disregarding weather advisories, says yatra halted before cloudburst

Katra, Sep 08: The pilgrimage to the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi continues to remain suspended for the 14th straight day on Monday due to adverse weather conditions and multiple landslides in the region.

Authorities have cited safety concerns as persistent rainfall has triggered landslides and blocked tracks leading to the shrine, making movement unsafe for pilgrims. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway also remains disrupted at several points due to landslides and road damage, further complicating connectivity.

Officials informed that restoration work is underway on priority to clear the debris and ensure the safety of routes. However, the yatra will only be resumed once weather conditions improve and the tracks are declared safe for passage.

The prolonged suspension has caused disappointment among devotees, while local businesses dependent on the yatra are also facing difficulties. The administration has appealed to the public and pilgrims to remain patient and avoid unnecessary travel towards the shrine until further notice.
Authorities have said that the Vaishno Devi Yatra will resume only after the situation improves and the track is declared safe for devotees.

A devotee from Kerala, who was waiting for the gates to open, on the 13th consecutive day of yatra suspension, said, “I am very sad that I did not get to go to the temple. I have been waiting for the last 2 days. The people here are saying that the gates will open after 15 days. But I am hopeful, and I will go home only after completing my yatra.” He also expressed condolences over the death of pilgrims due to the landslide in the area.

The Vaishno Devi Yatra was suspended after a landslide on August 26 that killed 34 people and injured several. The disaster struck in the afternoon, around 3 pm, when heavy rains triggered a massive landslide near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkuwari, about halfway along the 12-kilometre trek from Katra to the shrine.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had ordered the constitution of a high-level three-member committee to investigate the causes of the landslide. Shaleen Kabra, Additional Chief Secretary of the Department of Jal Shakti, Jammu and Kashmir, is heading the committee, which includes the Divisional Commissioner and the Inspector General of Police, Jammu.
According to an official order, the committee also includes the Divisional Commissioner and the Inspector General of Police, Jammu.

Azharuddin Stresses Need for Elected Cricket Body in Jammu and Kashmir

Azharuddin Stresses Need for Elected Cricket Body in Jammu and Kashmir

Baramulla, Sep 8: Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin on Monday underscored that cricket in Jammu and Kashmir can flourish only if an elected body takes charge of the sport instead of relying on ad-hoc arrangements.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to Baramulla, Azharuddin said elections are vital to ensure accountability and long-term development. “You cannot run associations indefinitely through temporary committees. Elections are the only way to bring stability, and only an elected body can take the game in the right direction,” he said.

The former skipper identified inadequate infrastructure as the single largest obstacle to cricket’s growth in the region. He pointed out that without proper stadiums, turf wickets, and training facilities, both sponsors and young players lose motivation. “There is a lot of raw talent here, but talent without guidance and proper coaching fades away. Children play with enthusiasm for some time but are eventually forced to give up due to lack of facilities,” he remarked.

Azharuddin recalled Kashmir’s cricketing legacy, noting that the Valley had once hosted international teams, including the West Indies and Australia. He said the passion for the sport remains strong, adding, “If a good match is organised here, ten to twenty thousand people will turn up to watch.”

He also acknowledged the Indian Army’s role in creating cricket infrastructure in Baramulla but maintained that facilities matching national standards were necessary to sustain and expand the sport.

Addressing young cricketers of Jammu and Kashmir, Azharuddin urged them to play with dedication. “The talent is here. With passion and hard work, players from the region can reach domestic semi-finals and finals, and some can even break into the national side,” he said. [KNT]
