BCCI to elect new president during AGM on Sep 28

No bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan, but cricket team for Asia Cup won't be stopped: Sports Ministry

Mumbai, Sep 06: The Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) will elect its new President and the next Indian Premier League (IPL) Chairman when it holds Annual General Meeting (AGM) here on September 28.

The post of the BCCI’s president fell vacant following the exit of former India cricketer Roger Binny earlier this month after he turned 70. He was appointed as the BCCI president in October 2022. BCCI constitution does not allow any official to host a post beyond 70.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal is also likely to go for a mandatory cool-off period after completing a cumulative period of six years.

While the election is supposed to take place for all key posts in the BCCI, it is effectively only for one position as the others are likely to continue in their roles.

Devajit Saikia was unanimously elected as the secretary in January this year after Jay Shah took over the role as Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The other officials who are also likely to continue are Rohan Gauns Desai, elected as the joint secretary in March this year, and Prabhtej Bhatia, who was elected as the treasurer in January along with Saikia.

Among the AGM’s agenda are the election and induction for one representative of the general body along with induction of two representatives of the Indian Cricketer’s Association in the apex council.

The BCCI ombudsman and ethics officer will also be appointed during the AGM, as well as the board’s representative on the ICC.

It was earlier reported that Binny, who turned 70 in July, would continue as the BCCI president until its AGM in September, the date of which was confirmed by a communication by the national governing body to the state associations on Saturday.

US tariffs hit Kashmir’s handicrafts; artisans fear livelihood crisis

US tariffs hit Kashmir’s handicrafts; artisans fear livelihood crisis

Srinagar, Sep 06: The United States’ decision to impose 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports has left Kashmir’s famed handicrafts sector reeling, with traders warning of mounting job cuts and artisans fearing a worsening livelihood crisis.

The tariffs, in effect since August 27, have dealt a severe blow to an industry that sustains over four lakh artisans across the Valley. With exports to the US now nearly unviable, traders are stuck with heavy stocks of unsold inventory and have begun cutting back on artisan employment, raising fears of a deepening livelihood crisis.

Pashmina blankets, shawls, embroidered furnishings and carpet rugs, traditionally shipped to the US for autumn and winter sales, have been hit hardest by the new trade barriers. Exporters said consignments meant for the current season could not be dispatched after the tariffs came into effect, resulting in the loss of an entire business cycle. Since many of these products see greater demand in the colder months, the timing of the disruption has magnified the financial losses.

The United States has long been a high-end market for Kashmiri handicrafts, accounting for nearly 30 per cent of Jammu and Kashmir’s total exports, which were valued at Rs 1,116 crore in 2023–24. For several exporters, the American market contributed the bulk of their annual business. With orders now stalled, the sector is struggling to identify alternative destinations, as few international markets have comparable demand for luxury products like silk carpets and hand-embroidered shawls.

The crisis has compounded the difficulties of an industry still recovering from the COVID-19 downturn. Dealers who had travelled to trade exhibitions in Delhi in search of new contracts said that interest from American buyers has dried up, leaving them with rising inventories and no immediate buyers. Many warn that prolonged stagnation could result not only in more job losses but also in the erosion of Kashmir’s craft heritage, which artisans have preserved for centuries despite economic hardships.

Traders across Srinagar and other centres reported a sharp fall in new orders in recent months. Carpet makers, paper-mâché craftsmen and chain-stitch embroiderers are among those worst affected, with many workshops running far below capacity. The slowdown has triggered calls for export incentives, with industry representatives urging the government to consider interest waivers, reductions in GST and special relief measures to help the sector weather the tariff shock.

With the festival season in the West approaching and no sign of the situation improving, the Kashmiri handicrafts trade faces one of its most difficult periods in recent memory. Unless alternative markets are found or policy interventions provide immediate support, exporters fear the losses could permanently reshape a sector that has long been both an economic lifeline and a cultural emblem of the Valley.

IAF conducts airdrop mission in J&K’s Udhampur; rescues 540 people in Himachal

New Delhi, Sep 06: Western Air Command of the Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out a major humanitarian operation in landslide-affected regions of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and Himachal Pradesh, providing life-saving aid and rescuing hundreds stranded by relentless rains and floods.

“In landslide-affected region of Udhampur, @IAF_MCC carried out a daring mission airdropping 5.9 tonnes of life-saving food supplies. Hundreds of families trapped by relentless landslides found hope from above.

“Meanwhile, in Himachal swift and heroic operations saw 540 lives rescued and evacuated to safe areas in a remarkable 17-hour window. 4 helicopters and 35 crew worked day and night to make these missions a success. It demonstrates IAF’s unwavering commitment to #HADR @DefencePROPalam,” Western Air Command, IAF posted on X.

Udhampur has been one of the worst-hit regions, grappling with the aftermath of heavy rains, flash floods, and massive landslides.

Key roads, including the strategic Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, remain blocked near Udhampur, leaving hundreds of vehicles, including trucks carrying essential supplies, stranded.

Authorities managed to partially open the highway on Sunday after a week-long closure.

Besides road connectivity, a massive landslide and land subsidence have damaged transmission towers, leading to severe power outages in the region.

In addition, a Government High School building, a vital bridge connecting Dudu Sub Division with Chenani and Latti, and three houses collapsed due to the landslides.

The Indian military, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have launched a massive relief operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s landslide-affected areas due to heavy rains.

Over the past three weeks, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed more than 170 fatalities caused by landslides, cloudbursts, and other weather-related incidents. The IAF’s swift response has brought relief to hundreds of affected families and is proving critical in restoring hope in disaster-hit areas.

Officials have assured that relief operations will continue until connectivity is restored and stranded residents are safely rehabilitated.

Reliable sources said that a case under FIR No. 76 of 2025 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) stands registered at police station Nigeen.

Earlier on Friday, locals damaged an Ashoka emblem on the inaugural stone inside the Hazratbal Dargah after objecting to its installation, saying the emblem was against Islamic principles and should not be placed in a shrine.

Following the damage, J&K Waqf Board Chairperson Darakhshan Andrabi termed the act a grave insult to the shrine and called it “nothing less than terrorism.” She appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and law enforcement agencies for immediate arrests, alleging that the chaos was “deliberately engineered by political workers and their supporters.”

Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi described it as an attempt to “monumentalise egos” inside a sacred place while NC MLA Tanvir Sadiq said the installation of a sculpted emblem contradicted the Islamic principle of Tawheed. (KDC)
