Modi hails ‘positive’ India-US ties after Trump remarks

Govt will continue with reforms to make India a developed nation by 2047: PM Modi

New Delhi, Sept 06: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India “fully reciprocates” US President Donald Trump’s positive assessment of bilateral ties, calling the partnership “very positive and forward-looking.”

In a post on X, Modi wrote: “Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump’s sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”

His remarks came shortly after Trump described India-US relations as “special” despite current strains over tariffs and New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil.

PTI reported that Trump, while speaking in the Oval Office, said, “I’ll always be friends with (Narendra) Modi… He’s a great prime minister. He’s great. But I just don’t like what he’s doing at this particular moment. But India and the United States have a special relationship. There’s nothing to worry about. We just have moments on occasion.”

Trump also voiced “very big disappointment” over India’s imports of Russian crude. According to PTI, he said, “I’ve been very disappointed that India would be buying so much oil from Russia, and I let them know that. We put a very big tariff on India, 50 per cent tariff, very high tariff.”

The US president’s comments came days after he suggested in a Truth Social post that “India and Russia” were drifting towards China, accompanied by an old photograph of Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping from a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin.

On trade, Trump maintained that negotiations with India and other countries were “going great” but reiterated his unhappiness with New Delhi’s tariff regime.

Meanwhile, senior officials in his administration sharpened their criticism. Peter Navarro, Senior Counsellor for Trade and Manufacturing, claimed on X that India’s tariffs “cost US jobs” and accused New Delhi of feeding “Russia’s war machine” through oil purchases that India rejected.

I’ll always be friends with Modi; India & US have special tie, nothing to worry about: Trump

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

New York, Sep 06: Amid current tensions between Washington and Delhi over tariffs and purchase of Russian oil, US President Donald Trump said India and the United States have a “special relationship” and there’s nothing to worry about as the two countries “just have moments on occasion”.

“I’ll always be friends with (Narendra) Modi… He’s a great prime minister. He’s great. But I just don’t like what he’s doing at this particular moment. But India and the United States have a special relationship. There’s nothing to worry about. We just have moments on occasion,” Trump said in the Oval Office on Friday.

The president was responding to a question on whether he is ready to reset relations with India, as ties between the two countries continue to reel under possibly the worst phase in over two decades.

Trump also said he is “very disappointed” that India would be buying “so much oil” from Russia.

“I’ve been very disappointed that India would be buying so much oil from Russia, and I let them know that. We put a very big tariff on India, 50 per cent tariff, very high tariff. I get along very well with (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi, he’s great. He was here a couple of months ago,” Trump said in response to a question on his social media post that the US has lost India and Russia to China.

In the Truth Social post, Trump said that “Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest, China. May they have a long and prosperous future together!”

Trump had also posted an old photo of Modi with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Trump’s post on social media came days after the bonhomie among Modi, Xi and Putin at a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in the Chinese city of Tianjin drew global attention.

To a question on how trade talks are going with India and other countries, Trump said, “They are going great. Other countries are doing great. We’re doing great with all of them. We’re upset with the European Union because of what’s happening with not just Google, but with all of our big companies.”

Meanwhile, Trump administration’s Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing, Peter Navarro, said in a post on X that India’s highest tariffs cost US jobs.

“India buys Russian oil purely to profit/revenues feed Russia war machine. Ukrainians/Russians die. US taxpayers shell out more. India can’t handle truth/spins,” Navarro said.

National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said that Trump and his trade team are disappointed that India continues to “fund” Russia’s Ukraine war.

“I think the trade team and the president are disappointed that India continues to fund Russia’s Ukraine war, and hopefully it’s a diplomatic issue that will have positive development soon,” Hassett told reporters at the White House on Friday.

Attack on Ashoka emblem, attack on faith: Darakhshan

Srinagar, Sep 5: Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board Chairperson Darakhshan Andrabi on Friday denounced the breaking of the emblem at Dargah Hazratbal, terming it a serious insult to the shrine and to the emotions of the Muslim community.

Addressing a news conference inside the shrine complex, Andrabi said, “Those who carried out this act are nothing less than terrorists. I appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and law enforcement agencies to arrest them without delay.”

She described the act as a personal shock, saying, “It was as if a cloudburst fell upon me when I witnessed the emblem destroyed.” Andrabi said that the chaos was deliberately engineered by political workers and their supporters.

“I had warned that such trouble could be created. FIRs will be filed against everyone responsible, including the MLA whose tweet added fuel to the fire,” Andrabi said.

She said that the Waqf Board’s renovation of Hazratbal was aimed at enhancing its sanctity and public trust.

DGCA plans to allow import of up to 20-year-old aircraft for commercial flight operations

Pak extends airspace ban for Indian aircraft by another month

New Delhi, Sep 5: Aviation watchdog DGCA is set to amend norms to allow airlines to import aircraft that are up to 20 years old at a time when global supply chain woes have been impacting plane deliveries.

Currently, pressurised aircraft that are up to 18 years old are permitted to be imported into the country, subject to certain conditions.

The DGCA has proposed amendments to the Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) pertaining to ‘Age of Aircraft to be imported for Scheduled/ Non-Scheduled including Charter, General Aviation and other Operations’.

A senior official told PTI that the draft CAR proposes changes for pressurised aircraft permitted to be imported subject to certain conditions up to 20 years instead of 18 previously, un-pressurised aircraft up to 25 years instead of 20 previously.

According to the draft CAR, pressurised aircraft intended to be imported and used in passenger services (scheduled/ non-scheduled) and general aviation operation, shall not have completed 20 years of age or 65 per cent of designed economic life in terms of pressurisation cycle, whichever is earlier.

Pressurised aircraft are those that can fly at higher altitudes, generally above 10,000 feet. Narrow-body and wide-body planes used for commercial flights are pressurised aircraft.

Unpressurised aircraft rely on natural atmospheric pressure and can only fly at low altitudes, such as trainer planes. Generally, their altitudes are limited to below 10,000 feet.

“In the case of unpressurised aircraft, the decision will be on a case-by-case basis and on a complete examination of the record of the aircraft being procured. Additionally, the aircraft intended to be imported shall have flown 50 hours during the last six months. However, the Director General of Civil Aviation would not allow such aircraft which are more than 25 years old,” the draft CAR said.

There are more than 800 leased aircraft in the country that are used for scheduled and non-scheduled operations.

In recent times, Indian airlines have been expanding their fleets and over 1,400 planes are on order. With the availability of aircraft becoming a challenge due to global supply chain issues, some carriers are opting for taking planes on lease for a short term.

Against this backdrop, the amendments in the aircraft import norms would help provide more leeway for airlines in terms of leasing options.

Sgr-Jmu NH remains shut for 4th day

Sgr-Jmu NH remains shut for 4th day

Ramban, Sep 5: The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained blocked for every type of traffic movement for the fourth consecutive day between Udhampur and Chenani sectors due to landslides and sinking of road stretches in Samroli, Balli Nallah, and Tharad areas of Udhampur district on Friday.

Official sources said road restoration work was going on between Chenani and Udhampur and Ramban and Banihal sectors.

Hundreds of vehicles carrying essential supplies and other commodities for the three districts of Chenab Valley, Kashmir, and Ladakh are stranded at different locations between Lakhanpur-Madhopur and Udhampur for the last 11 days due to the blockade of the road stretches at multiple locations following heavy rains across J&K that caused damage due to flash-floods, landslides, washing away, and sinking of the road strips, especially at Samroli, Balli Nallah, and Tharad between Chenani and Udhampur.

On Friday, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, along with Deputy Commissioner (DC) Udhampur, Saloni Rai, and other senior officers visited Tharad village, where a massive landslide and sinking of road occurred on around 200 meters of road stretch that is totally damaged.

The Divisional Commissioner inspected road restoration work and passed on directions to the concerned road maintenance agency, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), engaged in clearing landslides and mudslides and reconstruction of the damaged road stretch.

An engineer of NHAI said that the road restoration work was going on full swing to restore this vital road connecting Kashmir and Chenab Valley.

He said they were facing hardships in clearing massive debris, slush, and boulders.

Six heavy earth movers and dumpers have been engaged to clear the accumulated debris and boulders at Tharad, where around 400 meters of road stretch is nowhere visible due to the sinking of the road.

The engineer said that several residential houses above the road were also damaged due to the sinking of land, besides, both tubes of the road stretch passing through the area.

The highway got blocked at several locations due to flash-floods and landslides that resulted in massive damage to the road stretch following heavy rains on August 26

Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police, National Highway, Ramban, Raja Adil Hamid, who is monitoring road restoration work, said the restoration work was going on round the clock at Tharad.

Meanwhile, the Nashri Banihal sector of the highway remains partially open for local passenger and stranded vehicles. The highway has also suffered huge damage between Nashri and Banihal in Peera, Maroog, Panthyal, Shalgadgi, Nachlana, and at other places.

The restoration work is also going on between the Nashri and Banihal sectors.

The highway passing through Ramban, Ramsu, and Banihal is the only road connecting the two subdivisions of Ramban district.

Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban districts and Chenani, Sudmahadev, and Kud Patnitop areas falling under Udhampur district are also cut off from Jammu.

A group of people said that due to road blockades, there is a shortage of fresh vegetables in the markets of Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban towns.

Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban, except Banihal and Gool, are completely dependent on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway passing through the area in the absence of any alternate route.

Talking to reporters after conducting an inspection of the road restoration work in Tharad, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Ramesh Kumar said that efforts were being made to reopen the highway by Saturday morning so that essential supplies are facilitated to Kashmir.

Traffic authorities Friday evening said the highway is still closed for traffic movement.

However, restoration work is going on.

The traffic authorities advised the people and vehicle operators not to undertake journeys on the highway until the road restoration work is completed.

They advised people not to pay heed to rumours and check the status of the road at the Traffic Police X handle and Facebook page and the Traffic Control Units (TCUs) of Srinagar, Jammu, Udhampur, and Ramban.
