Tanvir Sadiq opposes Ashoka Emblem at Hazratbal, calls it against Islamic belief

Srinagar, Sep 05: A fresh controversy has erupted over the installation of the Ashoka emblem at the Hazratbal Dargah shrine; with National Conference leader Tanvir Sadiq stating that the move contradicts the fundamental Islamic belief of Tawheed.

In a post on X, Sadiq said that while he was not a religious scholar, Islam strictly forbids idol worship, calling it the gravest of sins. “The foundation of our faith is Tawheed,” he wrote.

He argued that placing the Ashoka emblem, described as a sculpted figure, inside the Dargah goes against this very principle. “Sacred spaces must reflect only the purity of Tawheed, nothing else,” Sadiq added.

The interior of the shrine was renovated and inaugurated on Wednesday.

Massive Chinese cyberattack hit more than 80 countries last year, exposed global leaders’ data

Srinagar, Sept 05: A massive cyberattack carried out by Chinese state-backed hackers struck more than 80 countries last year, potentially compromising data on nearly every American — including President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance — U.S. officials revealed after a year-long probe.

According to reports, the hacking group, known as Salt Typhoon, infiltrated major telecommunications companies to secure long-term access to vast networks, investigators said in a joint statement last week.

Officials warned the breach was far more extensive than initially believed, with stolen data giving Chinese intelligence the ability to exploit global communications and track politicians, spies, and activists. The group targeted phones of then Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and running mate JD Vance in October last year, according to a report by The Independent.

According to a report by The New York Times, experts believe the recent Salt Typhoon cyberattack may signal a new phase in China’s cyber capabilities—one that could challenge its strategic adversaries and reinforce Beijing’s pursuit of greater global influence.

Meanwhile, British cybersecurity officials stated that the hackers were involved in a sophisticated and coordinated effort, further raising alarms among global security communities.

Flood-like situation emerges in Bandipora’s Kaniyari village, families shifted to safer places

Flood-like situation emerges in Bandipora’s Kaniyari village, families shifted to safer places

Bandipora, Sept 05: A flood-like situation has gripped Kaniyari, a neglected village in Bandipora district, after rising waters from Wular Lake submerged road connectivity and entered several houses, leaving residents distressed and fearful.

Locals alleged that authorities have repeatedly ignored their long-standing demand for permanent land allotment to relocate from the flood-prone area. “We are living in constant fear. Authorities have assured us land allocation many times, but we are still waiting,” said the villagers while talking to the news agency Kashmir News Trust (KNT).

They said that despite repeated assurances from successive governments, no permanent relief has been provided, forcing them to face the same ordeal every year when water levels rise.

Floodwater has already entered residential areas, causing immense hardships for families. The concerned Tehsildar visited the spot and advised those feeling unsafe to temporarily move to a nearby school, where arrangements were made for their stay. Villagers, however, dismissed the step as a temporary measure that fails to address the core issue of their relocation.

On Thursday evening, authorities including Tehsildar Hajin Abdul Wasee-ul-Rouf Deva, SHO Hajin Qaiser Bashir, and other officials, reached the village to review the situation. On Friday morning, the district administration ordered the evacuation of Kaniyari residents to Government High School Gund Jahangir as a precautionary measure.

The villagers have once again appealed to the government to take immediate and concrete steps to address their long-standing demand for relocation and ensure their safety from recurring floods.

Air India plane's auxiliary power unit catches fire after landing at Delhi airport from Hong Kong

New Delhi, Sep 05: An Indore-bound Air India Express flight from Delhi suffered a mid-air engine fault on Friday, prompting the pilots to make a ‘PAN-PAN’ call to Air Traffic Control before landing safely with all passengers unharmed.

The internationally recognised ‘PAN-PAN’ signal is used in aviation to indicate an urgent but non-life-threatening situation, requiring immediate support from air traffic control or ground services.

Officials said the flight, IX 1028, was carrying 161 passengers when the crew noticed a suspected oil filter issue during descent into Indore.

Following aviation protocol, the pilots immediately alerted ATC and carried out precautionary measures.

The aircraft later touched down safely at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport with a delay of about 20 minutes.

“Due to a suspected oil filter issue during descent into Indore, following standard operating procedures, the crew landed safely. Our pilots are well trained to carry out such precautionary measures,” an Air India Express spokesperson said in a statement.

The airline also confirmed that all 161 passengers and crew members were safe.

“The crew of this plane with flight number IX 1028 and all passengers on board are completely safe,” the spokesperson added.

This is the second such mid-air scare reported in recent weeks. In, an IndiGo flight travelling from Delhi to Goa had to make an emergency landing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport after experiencing an engine issue.

On July 19, an Air India Express flight to Phuket had to return to Hyderabad soon after take-off because of a technical problem.

The airline said in a statement that the crew acted with caution and decided to bring the plane back to Hyderabad to ensure safety.

Air India Express, which operates Boeing 737 Max aircraft on domestic and international routes, has stressed that passenger safety remains its highest priority.

J-K highway shut for fourth day due to multiple landslides; Mughal Road reopens

Jammu, Sep 05: The Jammu-Srinagar national highway remained closed for vehicular traffic for the fourth consecutive day on Friday due to multiple landslides and washing away of road patches.

However, the inter-regional Mughal Road, connecting Jammu region’s Poonch district with Kashmir’s Shopian district, was reopened for vehicular traffic after three days of closure.

“The Jammu-Srinagar highway and Sinthan Road are closed for vehicular movement due to landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones at several places,” a traffic police officer said.

The highway had remained closed due to multiple blockades since August 26 following torrential rains, flash floods, and landslides, but was reopened for traffic for a few hours on August 30. In total, the highway has been closed for ten days.

The closure of highways and other inter-regional roads to Kashmir has resulted in over 3,700 vehicles getting stuck at various places from Kathua to Kashmir.

Mughal Road, which was closed for four days, was reopened for traffic, and LMVs including passenger and private cars have been allowed from both sides on the Mughal Road from Jammu towards Srinagar and vice versa via Poonch, they said.

However, HMVs carrying essential commodities, limited to six-tyre trucks only, are being allowed from Poonch towards Shopian, they said.

Besides this, important highways, including the Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch highway, which was closed for three days, have also been reopened for traffic after clearance of landslides, they said.

“The highway is still closed for vehicular movement from Jakheni (Udhampur) towards Srinagar and vice versa due to road blockages between Jakheni and Bali Nallah. No vehicular movement shall be allowed from Nagrota (Jammu) towards Reasi, Chenani, Patnitop, Doda, Ramban, Banihal, Srinagar and vice versa,” a traffic police advisory said.

The most affected areas include Shalgadi, Nachilana, Panthyal, Maroog and Peerah in Ramban–Banihal, where retaining walls and stretches of road have been washed away, and a heavy landslide has even entered one tube of the Peerah tunnel.

In the Udhampur sector, around 10 km of road between Jakhani, Thara D, Bali Nallah and Dewal has been affected, they said.
