JKCSF expresses concern over govt’s 'non-seriousness' in declaring Eid-Milad public holidays

Srinagar, Sep 05: The Chairman of Jammu Kashmir Civil Society Forum (JKCSF), Ab Qayoom Wani has expressed deep concern over the non-serious attitude of the J&K Government, particularly, in declaring Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi (SAW) a public holiday.

According to the chairman, “It is most unfortunate that despite Eid Milad falling on Saturday as per the lunar calendar, the Government failed to synchronize the notification accordingly. This mismatch reflects a casual approach towards a revered day which holds immense spiritual and religious significance for the people.”

JKCSF urges the Government to ensure due diligence and seriousness while issuing such notifications in future so that the sanctity of important occasions is upheld with respect and accuracy.

Wular lake swells in Kashmir, officials say maintaining guard

Wular lake swells in Kashmir, officials say maintaining guard

Bandipora, Sep 05: As water levels in the Jhelum and other major tributaries have begun to recede, the levels in Wular Lake in north Kashmir’s Bandipora are continuously rising, with officials saying the increase will remain “gradual.”

The low-lying villages around Wular, predominantly home to fishing communities, have so far largely remained unaffected, though apprehensions of water spilling over persist.

On Thursday night, the administration persuaded some families near Kulhama village on the Jhelum and Wular banks to move to safety.

“We have appointed nodal officers for the flood situation. The conditions seem under control, although there were apprehensions in Kulhama village and a few families were requested to move,” Tehsildar Bandipora Firdous Ahmad Qadri told Greater Kashmir.

“The water levels have increased, a few families were shifted, but the situation seems normal as there is no such panic in the community,” local resident Muzaffar Ahmad told Greater Kashmir. He added that adjoining villagers are also maintaining vigil, “but daily work routine hasn’t been impacted.”

Meanwhile, Executive Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control Bandipora, Mutayib Bashir Shah, told Greater Kashmir they expect water levels in Wular to rise gradually.

“The department, with continuous support from district administration, took all pre-emptive measures up to midnight yesterday to avert any eventuality due to the prevailing flood state of the Jhelum and other water bodies,” he said.

“As of now the water has started to recede. People need not panic, as we maintain our guard of the embankments until we reach safer levels,” the officer added.

He further said, “But we expect the water level to increase in Wular Lake and the areas near its periphery. The rise shall be very gradual.”

Muzaffar, the local resident, also agreed with the officer, saying people living in these areas are “very well versed with such situations, as these habitations are inside Wular Lake when seen as a flood basin.”

“Since the rise is gradual, people also act accordingly by managing their belongings in time,” he said.

Despite this, the administration has already designated local nodal officers for any assistance.

Gaza City has become ‘city of fear, flight and funerals’: UN official

Israel kills Hamas spokesperson as hospitals report dozens killed in Gaza city

United Nations, Sep 05: Gaza City, the last refuge for families in the northern Gaza Strip, is fast becoming a place where childhood cannot survive, Tess Ingram, UNICEF Communication Manager for the Middle East and North Africa Regional Office, said.

“It is a city of fear, flight and funerals,” Ingram told a daily briefing on Thursday at the UN headquarters in New York, via video conferencing from the Gaza Strip.

The world is sounding the alarm about what an intensified military offensive in Gaza City could bring — a catastrophe for the nearly 1 million people who remain there, she said.

“It would be an unthinkable tragedy, and we must do everything in our power to prevent it,” Ingram added.

She said that over nine days, she met families in Gaza City who fled their homes in fear — already displaced, now displaced again — arriving with nothing but the clothes on their backs, Xinhua news agency reported.

“I met children who were separated from their parents in that chaos. Mothers whose children have died of starvation. Mothers who fear their children will be next. I’ve spoken to kids in hospital beds, their small bodies shredded by shrapnel,” she added.

According to Ingram, only 44 of the 92 UNICEF-supported outpatient nutrition treatment centres in Gaza City are still functioning, depleting thousands of malnourished children of more than half of the lifelines they depend on to fight famine.

“Our team is doing everything in their power to help children. But we could do far more, reach every child here, if our operations on the ground were enabled at scale and we were well funded,” she said.

“Palestinian life is being dismantled here”, and the suffering of children in the Gaza Strip is not accidental, Ingram stressed.

“It is the direct consequence of choices that have turned Gaza City and indeed the entire Strip into a place where people’s lives are under attack, from every angle, every day.”

Ingram said that UNICEF continues to call on Israel to review its rules of engagement to ensure children are protected, as is required under international humanitarian law, and to allow sufficient aid to enter Gaza; on Hamas and other armed groups to release all the remaining hostages; on both parties to protect civilians and essential infrastructure, and to reinstate the ceasefire; and on the international community to use their leverage to end the current catastrophic situation in Gaza.

50 houses damaged as land sinks in 2 villages of J-K's Reasi; villagers evacuated

Jammu, Sep 05: Fifty houses were damaged due to the sinking of land in twin mountainous hamlets of Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, prompting authorities to evacuate villagers to safer places, officials said.

The administration is working round-the-clock with full commitment, prioritising the safety, rehabilitation and well-being of the affected families.

“At village Bagga Jameslan, land sinking damaged around 35 houses. The administration swiftly evacuated all affected families from the hamlet,” a senior official said.

They were relocated to three identified relief camps at Government High School, Middle School and Panchayat Ghar in the area, he said.

In response to the continuous rainfall and subsequent land sinking incidents in Mahore subdivision, the administration, under the direct supervision of Reasi Deputy Commissioner Nidhi Malik, acted promptly to safeguard lives and ensure timely relief measures.

The operations were closely supervised on the spot by Mahore Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Shafqat Majeed Bhat along with other officials from all essential departments, ensuring safe evacuation and immediate relief.

All relief camps have adequate arrangements including ration, blankets, mattresses, tents, drinking water and uninterrupted electricity supply for the displaced families, he added.

Flood situation alarming in J&K, rivers cross danger mark

Srinagar, Sep 05: The Jhelum River finally exhibited signs of stabilization on Friday, with water levels at Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh falling below danger levels, however, the level at Pampore continued to remain above the danger mark.

An official said that people should continue to remain cautious as water levels in the valley continue to fluctuate.

He said that no breaches were reported along any part of the Jhelum overnight, and over two feet of water receded at Ram Munshi Bagh.

According to the Irrigation & Flood Control Department (I&FC) the latest gauge readings at 8:00 am were: Sangam at 20.18 ft (Danger level 25 ft) – below danger mark; Pampore at 5.74 m (Danger level 5.0 m) – above flood mark; and R.M. Bagh at 20.49 ft (danger level 21 ft) – below danger mark.

Arab ministerial committee rejects ‘Israel’s measures to isolate Jerusalem’

Arab ministerial committee rejects 'Israel's measures to isolate Jerusalem'

Cairo, Sep 05: An Arab ministerial committee here rejected “the Israeli measures to isolate Jerusalem,” stressing that “Israel has no sovereignty over Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites”.

The committee, in charge of international action to confront illegal Israeli policies and measures in Jerusalem, issued a joint statement on Thursday following its 10th meeting on the sidelines of the 164th regular meeting of the Council of the Arab League (AL), Xinhua news agency reported.

The committee, formed by the AL in 2021 and chaired by Jordan, includes Iraq, Palestine, Algeria, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, and the AL Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

In the statement, the committee condemned Israel’s recent approval of the E1 settlement plan as a prelude to “besieging the Old City and isolating it from its Palestinian surroundings”.

The approval is an attempt to “undermine the establishment of a Palestinian state and a blatant assault on the right of the Palestinian people to embody their independent state,” it said.

It condemned all measures aimed at changing the demographic composition and the historical and religious character of Jerusalem, noting that these measures are in opposition to international laws and legitimate international resolutions.

It also criticised Israel’s attempts to “impose facts and practices aimed at the temporal and spatial division” of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, and to limit the free access of Muslim worshippers to the compound.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank in the Six-Day War of 1967 and has since built settlements widely deemed illegal under international law. It has accelerated settlement activities in recent years.

In late August, it approved the construction of 3,401 housing units in E1, located east of Jerusalem, linking the large-scale settlement of Maale Adumim with East Jerusalem.

Settlement construction there is believed to effectively divide the West Bank into northern and southern parts, cutting off Palestinian territorial continuity between East Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Ramallah, while creating a continuous Jewish population corridor between Jerusalem and Maale Adumim.

Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, located in East Jerusalem, is now administered by the Jordanian Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, through its Jerusalem Awqaf and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department, but is secured by Israeli police.

Under a long-held status quo, Jews are allowed to visit the site but not to pray there.

However, some far-right Israelis have increasingly defied this restriction by praying at the site in recent years.

Srinagar-Jammu NH remains closed

Mughal Road open for LMVs; Jammu-Srinagar NH, SSG, Sinthan road still closed: Officials

Ramban, Sep 4: The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained completely blocked for the third consecutive day due to multiple landslides and mudslides triggered by heavy rains besides sinking and washing away of road stretches between Udhampur and Chenani, on Thursday.

Due to the closure of the highway, hundreds of vehicles are stranded between Lakhanpur-Madhopur and Srinagar.

Due to the road blockade, people, especially vehicle operators, are facing hardships and difficulties as they have been stuck at different locations between Srinagar and Jammu since August 26.

The highway was blocked due to multiple landslides between Udhampur and Banihal and flash floods on the Jammu-Pathankot section on August 26.

However, after a slight improvement in the weather, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was partially restored on Sunday evening after road stretches at three different locations, Samroli, Balli Nallah, and Tharad, were made traffic worthy by the concerned road maintenance agency, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), for clearing stranded vehicles.

On Tuesday morning, following torrential rains across the region, the highway again got blocked at multiple locations between Udhampur and Chenani, and between Nashri and Banihal sectors.

However, after a slight improvement in the weather on Thursday, road restoration work was going on war footing to restore the highway at various locations, especially at Tharad, Samroli, Maroog, and many other locations.

Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police, National Highway, Ramban, Raja Adil Hamid, who is monitoring road restoration work at Bali Nullah and Tharad, said that road restoration work was going on.

Officials of NHAI in Udhampur said that the road restoration work was on to clear the landslide and make arrangements to restore this vital road connectivity.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ramban, Muhammad Alyas Khan, said that the Nashri to Banihal stretch of the highway had been partially restored on Thursday.

However, he said it would take time for complete restoration.

Authorities wasted last 11 years: CM Omar Abdullah

Authorities wasted last 11 years: CM Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, Sep 4: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that the flood-like situation faced by people this year was due to the failure of the authorities in carrying out the dredging of the Jhelum and other flood channels in the last 11 years post 2014 floods.

Talking to reporters at Shalina, CM Omar said that had the authorities taken the right steps, this situation would not have taken place today.

“If dredging of the Jhelum and flood channels had been carried out, this situation would not have arisen. There has been negligence on the part of those who were in power in the last 11 years. We will question this negligence and seek answers. We will ensure that people are not forced to abandon their homes, live in fear, or park their cars on flyovers to keep them safe in such a situation in the future,” he said.

The CM said that they expected that after the 2014 floods, people would not witness such conditions again.

“Unfortunately, we are forced to see this situation due to the negligence of the last 11 years. Rainfall is in the hands of Allah, but rainfall alone should not cause such devastation. If the right measures had been taken over the past 11 years, these losses could have been avoided,” he said.

However, CM Omar assured people that from now on, “we will not allow such situations to arise again.”

He said that a review meeting would be convened to assess what had actually been done during the last 11 years in terms of flood management.

“The government will ensure that in the future such situations are not repeated, where even two days of rain create a sense of danger among people. We will take concrete measures, and preparations for that will begin immediately,” the CM said.

He said that after the 2014 floods, a package was announced under which dredging of the Jhelum and flood channels was to be carried out to increase their carrying capacity.

“Unfortunately, it now seems that these 11 years have been wasted. It raises a serious question about what has been done in the past 11 years,” CM Omar said.

About the difference between the 2014 floods and the 2025 situation, he said, “This year we managed to save Srinagar city from flooding. Although water has entered areas like Lasjan but Srinagar city has been protected.”

The CM said that districts like Kulgam and other places faced significant financial loss.

“But this would not have happened had the authorities taken the right steps during the last 11 years,” he said.

Referring to the recent incessant rains which caused a flood-like situation, CM Omar said that people were timely evacuated from their homes and there was no loss of life.

“Property damage has occurred, and that cannot be denied. Now, we will ensure that the financial losses are properly assessed. The Centre has already deputed a team to inspect damages in ten districts of Jammu. I will write to Home Minister Amit Shah and request him that the same team should also visit Kashmir districts, including Anantnag, Kulgam, Anantnag, Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Baramulla, and Bandipora, where crops that were nearly ready for harvest and other properties have suffered heavy damage,” he said.

The CM said that the losses must be assessed and a relief package should be sanctioned for J&K by the Centre.

Earlier, CM Omar carried out an extensive visit to the flood-affected areas of Srinagar and Budgam districts, reaching interior localities by boat to take stock of the situation following a breach in the embankment of the River Jhelum at Shalina near Lasjan.

He visited Taingan Lasjan and Shalina areas, where he made a first-hand assessment of the situation.

Braving the floodwaters, the CM reached the submerged interiors by boat.

He also interacted with affected residents and assured them that the government would extend all possible help and support.

“The immediate priority of the administration is to rescue people from inundated areas, evacuate them to safer locations, and provide instant relief,” CM Omar said.

He directed the administration to ensure smooth and safe evacuation of families from waterlogged localities and instructed that temporary shelters be established, adequately equipped with safe drinking water, food, and medical facilities.

The CM urged residents of adjoining areas to strictly follow advisories issued by the administration and to extend full cooperation to the authorities engaged in rescue and relief operations.

Speaking to the people at the site, he said, “The apprehension we had yesterday, owing to the continuous rains and the rising water levels of the Jhelum, unfortunately came true and caused flooding in several areas. First and foremost, we are deeply thankful to Almighty Allah that timely evacuation was carried out and, most importantly, there has been no loss of human life.”

Acknowledging the scale of damage, CM Omar said there had been considerable financial and property loss.

“This cannot be denied. We have to make appropriate decisions in this regard. A team from the Central Government has already been deputed to assess damages in ten districts of Jammu. I will be requesting the Hon’ble Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, to depute the same team to Kashmir as well, so that the damages in Kulgam, Anantnag, Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Bandipora, and other affected areas can be properly assessed,” he said. “It is our responsibility to evaluate the extent of losses in every flood-hit area and to ensure that necessary relief and rehabilitation measures are taken for our people.”

The CM gave directions to provide potable drinking water to the affected families and additional boats to evacuate the cattle stranded in marooned cattle sheds.

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary, Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, and MLAs from Chadoora, Chanapora, and Lal Chowk constituencies accompanied the Chief Minister during the visit.

Additional Chief Secretary, Jal Shakti, Shaleen Kabra, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Deputy Commissioners of Srinagar and Budgam, Director Health Services Kashmir, Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control Kashmir, along with other senior officers, were also present.
