Afghanistan earthquake death toll rises to 1,457

Earthquake in eastern Afghanistan destroys villages, kills 800 people, with 2,500 injured

Kabul, Sep 04: The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Afghanistan’s Kunar province has climbed to 1,457, with 3,394 others injured, Taliban officials said on Thursday. More than 6,700 homes have been destroyed due to earthquake as international aid agencies struggle to reach people in remote areas, the local media reported.

Taliban deputy spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat said at least 3,994 people have been injured while over 6,782 homes were destroyed in Kunar and neighbouring Nangarhar, Afghanistan’s leading news agency Khaama Press reported. Rescue workers have started retrieving bodies from the rubble, with officials stating that the recovery operation remains far from complete.

Survivors have been facing shortages of water, food and medical care. Taliban authorities have claimed that humanitarian assistance has been provided to many families and roads to remote earthquake-hit areas have been reopened. They also stated that specialised rescue teams from several nations have joined ongoing operations.

Despite Taliban’s claims, people and aid workers have said that rescue efforts continue to remain slow and uneven. The difficult mountainous terrain and widespread damage has further made it hard to reach people who are most in need.

International organisations, including the Red Cross and the World Health Organisation, along with aid shipments from India, Japan, Iran and Turkey are working to support local operations. Relief agencies have said that access challenges have delayed critical supplies and medical assistance.

The 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the eastern part of Afghanistan at 11.47 pm local time on August 31, at a depth of eight kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey, Xinhua news agency reported.

Afghanistan is especially vulnerable to earthquakes as it sits on top of several fault lines where the Indian and Eurasian plates meet. The mountainous terrain of eastern Afghanistan is also prone to landslides, making it harder for emergency services to carry out rescues.

On September 1, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar spoke with Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and condolences over the loss of lives in the earthquake. Wishing early recovery to those injured, the EAM expressed India’s full support for Afghanistan and conveyed that New Delhi will be sending food and relief material to Kabul.

“Spoke with Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi today. Expressed our condolences at the loss of lives in the earthquake. Conveyed that India has delivered 1000 family tents today in Kabul. 15 tonnes of food material is also being immediately moved by Indian Mission from Kabul to Kunar. Further relief material will be sent from India starting tomorrow. Wish early recovery of those injured. India stands by Afghanistan at this difficult time,” EAM Jaishankar posted on X.

Jammu admin intensifies restoration work after flooding in Tawi river

Jammu, Sep 04: The administration has intensified restoration work and debris clearance in low-lying areas of Jammu city following flooding in the Tawi river, and has considerably restored water and power supply in the affected areas.

Officials said that they have restored 70 per cent of water supply and 80 per cent of the power supply.

Record-breaking rainfall triggered panic as the river Tawi, popularly known as Surya Putri, roared with flood fury on August 26, inundating hundreds of homes and hectares of farmland, washing away structures and livestock, and displacing thousands in Jammu city, particularly Gujjar Nagar and Peerkho.

“Cleanliness operations are being undertaken at a fast pace to remove muck and debris from localities and ensure they are fully cleared of deposits left by the floodwaters of the Tawi. The administration is fully working on this issue,” Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar said.

Kumar, flanked by Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Minhas and JMC Commissioner Devansh Yadav, monitored the operations carried out by labourers and machines after weather conditions improved on Thursday.

“A large number of labourers and six JCBs are engaged to ensure the areas are cleaned as soon as possible. Officials are monitoring the process,” he said.

On the morning of August 26, the calm river turned into a raging torrent, submerging low-lying areas, particularly riverbank colonies of Peerkho, Gujjar Nagar, Gurkha Nagar, Rajiv Nagar and others. Streets became waterways, prompting large-scale rescue operations amid panic across the ‘city of temples.’

Peerkho, among the worst-hit areas, was left strewn with half-buried vehicles, debris, boulders and uprooted trees. More than 300 people, including children clinging to their mothers and the elderly too frail to walk, were pulled out in desperate rescue efforts. But fear still lingered like a shadow.

Kumar said the administration is working in a proactive manner. “The Deputy Commissioner, Municipal Commissioner, and MD JPDCL — all are on the ground, working fast to restore essentials. Muck and debris clearance is being carried out in the area,” he said.

The divisional commissioner further said water and power facilities are being fully restored.

“About 70 per cent of the water supply has been restored, and the remaining is being done at a fast pace. Nearly 80 per cent of the power supply has been restored in the area. Work is being carried out on a war footing,” he said.

As far as relief is concerned, he said the assessment is being done by the deputy commissioner.

“Once that is completed, ex gratia will be given to the affected families. All possible support will be provided by the government, as it stands with people in this tough time,” he added.

He further said that full relief will be given to all the flood-affected victims, and all facilities and essential supplies will be restored very soon.

On water supply restoration, the deputy commissioner has procured private water tankers to ensure supply to all affected areas.

“It will take some time, but we are committed to fully restoring the facility,” Kumar added.

Asif Iqbal from north Kashmir joins ICC Umpires Panel, officiates in Pakistan–Afghanistan–UAE tri-series

Srinagar, Sep 04: Asif Iqbal from Khanpora Baramulla has been named to the ICC panel of umpires, officiating in the ongoing T20 tri-nation series featuring Pakistan, Afghanistan and the UAE at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Asif (43), who stood as an on-field umpire in the high-octane Pakistan–Afghanistan clash on September 2, began his journey from the narrow lanes of Baramulla where he first played cricket, in the absence of proper playgrounds.

His family, while recalling his early passion, said, Asif used to play in the bylanes as there was no ground here. “It’s not just our pride, but the pride of the whole Baramulla, in fact the entire valley.”

After basic schooling in Baramulla, Asif pursued higher studies at Aligarh before moving to Dubai for work. In 2017, he completed his Level-1 umpiring course in Dubai and later trained in Sri Lanka, which paved the way for his international career.

Local Auqaf Head, Malik Shabir expressed joy at Asif’s feat while highlighting the lack of sports infrastructure in the town. “Despite no adequate infrastructure, he made it this far. Our youth have talent, but dilapidated grounds are holding them back. We urge the administration to upgrade facilities,” he said.

Mohammed Rafiq Bhat, a JKCA umpire, described Asif as his mentor, and said whenever he had doubts, he would call Asif. “He even took Zoom sessions for me to clear things up. He has been a constant source of guidance and motivation,” Bhat said.

According to the accessed details, Aasif Iqbal has officiated in multiple high-profile T20 Internationals, beginning with the UAE vs Pakistan match on 29 August 2025 in Sharjah (T20I 3426), followed by UAE vs Afghanistan on 31 August and Afghanistan vs Pakistan on 1 September.

Between 2021 and 2025, he has umpired 21 T20 matches, placing him among the most active officials globally. In 2024, he also stood in three men’s ODIs and three Women’s ODIs, demonstrating versatility across formats. (KNO)

Train services suspended from Udhampur to Pathankot amid heavy rainfall

Jammu, Sep 04: The Jammu-Katra shuttle train service, which was started to facilitate the movement of locals and stranded passengers, was suspended for the second day on Thursday in the wake of floods and landslides.

Heavy rains triggered landslides blocking the portal of tunnel number 16 on the rail track between Ramnagar and Manwal in the Jammu-Udhampur section.

“Due to heavy rainfall and landslides, railways have decided to cancel the shuttle train service (between Jammu and Katra) today,” Chief Public Relations Officer Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay said.

The shuttle services, with the induction of four trains between Katra and Jammu, had started on September 1, and were scheduled to run till September 15.

Rail traffic has remained suspended in the Jammu railway division for the past nine days due to misalignment and breaches at multiple locations in the Pathankot-Jammu section following heavy rains and flash floods on August 26.

However, railways has been running special trains to ferry stranded passengers from Jammu to their destinations over the past four days.

A total of 5,784 stranded passengers have been ferried in seven trains from Jammu for their onward journey.

Scores of people, especially pilgrims, were stranded as heavy rains lashed the Jammu region since August 26, severely disrupting rail and road traffic.

A landslide near the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra claimed 34 lives.

SC notice to NIA on Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah’s plea for bail

Shabir Shah stable, social media rumours untrue: PRO Delhi Prisons

New Delhi, Sep 4: The Supreme Court on Thursday sought response from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Ahmed Shah’s plea challenging the Delhi High Court order denying him bail in a terror funding case.

A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, however, refused to grant him interim bail.

Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for Shah, sought interim bail, saying that the petitioner was “very sick”.

The bench issued notice to the NIA on Shah’s plea challenging a June 12 this year order of the high court.

The bench posted the matter for hearing after two weeks.

The high court had refused to grant him bail in the case, observing the possibility of him carrying out similar unlawful activities and influencing witnesses couldn’t be ruled out.

Shah was arrested by the NIA on June 4, 2019.

In 2017, the NIA registered a case against 12 persons on allegations of conspiracy for raising and collecting funds for causing disruption by way of pelting stones, damaging public property and conspiring to wage war against the Government of India.
