Stock market ends lower on 3rd consecutive trading day as weak global cues continue

Mumbai, Sep 2: The Indian equity indices settled in negative territory after a volatile session on Tuesday. Optimistic expectations around GST rationalisation and the affirmative SCO summit buoyed the market momentum in the early trading hours but it lost the gains amid profit booking, as investors turned cautious ahead of the GST Council meeting and F&O expiry.

Sensex closed at 80,157.88, down 206.61 points or 0.26 per cent. The 30-share index started the session with a decent gap-up at 80,520.09 against last session’s closing of 80,157.88, buoyed by the affirmative SCO summit and strong GST collection data. The index escalated further to touch an intra-day high at 80,761.14; however, it fell into negative territory amid profit booking.

Nifty ended the session at 24,569.60, down 45.45 points or 0.18 per cent.

“Domestic equities reversed early gains from strong macro data, ending lower on profit booking amid caution ahead of the GST Council meeting and F&O expiry, with banking stocks leading the decline,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited.

Sugar stocks rallied on relaxed ethanol norms, while export-oriented companies gained following dovish remarks by the US, renewing trade optimism. However, investors remain guarded, with a near-term focus on domestic consumption amid global uncertainty, he added.

Highway continues to remain closed

Srinagar-Jammu NH closed for 4th day

Ramban/ Banihal Sep 2: Following a fresh spell of rain across the Udhampur and Banihal sectors that triggered fresh landslides and shooting again, forcing the authorities to completely suspend vehicular movement on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway due to the sinking of the road at Tharad, Udhampur, on Tuesday morning.

The highway suffered further damage on Tuesday evening following continuous rains in Banihal and Udhampur.

Fresh landslides and sinking of land were reported in the Balli Nallah and Tharad bridge areas of Udhampur district on Tuesday evening, dealing a severe blow to the efforts of the early restoration of the highway.

Officials said that in addition to the sinking road and land patches in Udhampur, a major retaining wall of the highway collapsed outside the Shalgadi tunnel, about 6 km from Banihal, late evening Tuesday.

The debris from the fallen wall slid onto the lower road, creating further hurdles for the movement of traffic.

The highway was closed from Tuesday morning after fresh rains triggered shooting stones and landslides in Ramban and Udhampur districts, and traffic was halted at several places on the highway and was not allowed from Udhampur and Qazigund.

The highway was partially opened late Sunday evening after remaining blocked for six consecutive days.

Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police, National Highway, Ramban, Raja Adil Hamid said the road stretch was used till Tuesday morning for the clearance of stranded vehicles that were engulfed by the sinking uphill amid continuous rains at Tharad area of Udhampur.

A huge mudslide at Maroog also blocked the Ramban and Banihal sectors late Tuesday afternoon.

Officials said traffic on the highway was suspended again on Tuesday after heavy rains triggered mudslides and shooting stones at several places between Chennai and Udhampur.

The traffic authorities said the road stretch from Jakhani, Udhampur, to Banihal was closed for vehicular movement.

Meanwhile, traffic authorities have advised commuters and vehicle operators not to undertake journeys on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway without confirming the status of the road from the Traffic Control Units (TCUs) of Srinagar, Jammu, Udhampur, and Ramban and on the X handle and Facebook page of J&K Traffic Police.

They said that the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rain for the next few days.

Meanwhile, vehicular traffic movement on the Batote-Doda-Kishtwar National Highway was also halted due to a fresh landslide near Pul Doda.

Trump aide terms Modi, Xi, Putin meet at SCO as ‘troublesome’

New York/Washington, Sep 2: President Donald Trump’s top trade adviser Peter Navarro has described as “troublesome” the show of unity between the leaders of India, Russia and China, saying New Delhi needs to be with Washington, Europe and Ukraine, not with Russia.

His comments come as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping publicly displayed bonhomie during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin on Monday.

“It’s troublesome. It’s troublesome,” Navarro said at the White House when asked about the “show of unity” between Modi, Xi and Putin.

Sawalkote Hydropower Project faces fresh roadblock

Sawalkote Hydropower Project faces fresh roadblock

Srinagar, Sep 2: The multi-billion-dollar Sawalkote Hydroelectric Power Project in Jammu and Kashmir has once again hit a stumbling block, with NHPC Limited cancelling the international tender that was floated only last month.

According to a corrigendum uploaded on the e-procurement portal, the tender for “Lot-1 Package: Planning, Design and Engineering (PDE) works for execution of 1856 MW Sawalkot Hydro Project located near Sidhu village in Ramban district” has been withdrawn.

The notice, dated August 11, cites only “administrative reasons/issues” as the basis for cancellation, without offering further explanation.

The cancellation comes barely two weeks after NHPC had issued the global tender on July 29, hailing it as the formal start of execution works after decades of delay.

The Rs 200-crore package was meant to cover critical design and engineering phases before shifting to large-scale civil works.

A senior official, while confirming the withdrawal, declined to elaborate on the administrative hurdles. “This is a procedural pause, not abandonment. Sawalkote remains very much on the priority list,” the official said, requesting anonymity.

The setback follows a series of high-level approvals that had rekindled hopes for the project.

Earlier, the Union Environment Ministry’s Forest Advisory Committee cleared the diversion of over 847 hectares of forest land, removing a key bottleneck.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration had also declared the project as “mission mode,” with assurances of expedited clearances.

The 1856 MW Sawalkote project is the largest hydroelectric scheme ever planned in J&K and has been in the pipeline since the late 1990s.

With a projected cost of Rs 22,700 crore, potentially rising to over Rs 30,000 crore due to delays, the project promises to generate nearly 8000 million units of electricity annually, transforming the region’s energy landscape.

Beyond development, Sawalkote has acquired strategic significance.

In the aftermath of the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 25 tourists, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, citing national security imperatives.

Since the Chenab River, a western river under the treaty, is the lifeline of Sawalkote, the project is viewed in New Delhi as central to asserting India’s water rights.

Officials insist that the cancellation of the initial tender does not signal a retreat.

“Large projects of this scale often face procedural resets. The tender will likely be reissued after internal reviews,” a senior Power Development Department official said.

Still, the fresh delay has drawn concern from environmental groups and affected communities.

While NHPC has committed to compensatory afforestation across 2115 hectares of degraded forest, activists argue that the fragile Himalayan ecology and local livelihoods remain at risk.

For now, Sawalkote once again finds itself in limbo, caught between the promise of powering J&K’s future and the recurring reality of bureaucratic and political hurdles.

DGFT offsets pressure from Trump’s tariffs, extends export obligation period

DGFT offsets pressure from Trump’s tariffs, extends export obligation period

New Delhi, Sep 2: The chemical industry has received a major relief as the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) extended the Export Obligation period under the Advance Authorization scheme for products covered by mandatory Quality Control Orders (QCOs).

The notification, issued on May 28 at the request of the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals (DCPC), increases the obligation timeframe from six months to 18 months.

The move is expected to ease compliance pressure and give exporters greater flexibility, especially at a time when Indian goods are facing new tariff barriers in the United States under President Donald Trump.

Officials said the extension would help safeguard the competitiveness of India’s chemical and petrochemical exports, which reached USD 46.4 billion in 2024-25, accounting for over 10% of total exports. By ensuring duty-free raw material imports and longer timeframes for fulfilling export obligations, the government aims to cushion the sector from rising input costs and external trade shocks.

The step aligns with similar relief provided earlier for QCOs under the Ministry of Textiles and is seen as part of India’s wider effort to maintain its global market edge amid tightening protectionist measures abroad.

UNSUNG HEROES OF AKHNOOR BRAVE CHENAB’S WRATH TO SAVE DOZENS

UNSUNG HEROES OF AKHNOOR BRAVE CHENAB’S WRATH TO SAVE DOZENS

Rajouri, Sep 2: The night the Chenab roared into Akhnoor, it was not the sound of sirens but the splash of old tyre tubes hitting the water that broke the fear. In the dark, with roads washed away and rescue teams hours from arriving, a handful of young men tied their lives to rubber rings and plunged into the current.

One by one, they ferried the stranded Border Security Force jawans, families huddled on rooftops, and children crying for help. The river showed no mercy, but neither did they, returning again and again until every call for help grew silent.

In Garkhal too, the story repeated itself, not as headlines, but as heroism born out of instinct. Ten men, none in uniform, none with formal training, stood shoulder to shoulder with the Border Police, SDRF, and NDRF, turning the furious Chenab into their battleground.

Their tyre rafts became lifelines, carrying nearly 30 souls from the jaws of the flood. For two days, August 26 and 27, the youth of Akhnoor rewrote what courage looks like, not medals, not orders, just resolve and a river to cross.

With road connectivity snapped and the arrival of SDRF and NDRF delayed, around a dozen local youth, assisted by Incharge PP Pargwal Amit Singh, volunteered to step in.

Risking their own lives, these men used improvised tyre tubes to float across the gushing floodwaters. Their act of bravery saved several Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, including one jawan near the International Border, a rescue now widely shared in a viral video.

Many stranded civilians were also ferried to safety in this operation.

A similar tale of grit came from Garkhal, where ten local men joined hands with teams from Border Police Post, SDRF, NDRF, BSF, Police and civil administration.

Together, they braved the waters with their tube rafts and rescued nearly 30 civilians along with BSF personnel trapped in the flood.

Across Pargwal and Garkhal, nearly 60 lives were saved over August 26 and 27.

Officials and locals alike hailed these young men for their fearless service, describing their actions as an “exemplary display of civilian bravery and solidarity” in times of disaster.

These unsung heroes, who wear no uniform and carry no official training, proved that courage does not always come with badges or ranks.

Armed with nothing but their determination and self-made rafts, they dived into the mighty Chenab, a river feared for its ferocity, to save precious human lives.

Residents of Akhnoor proudly recall how these youth risked everything for the safety of their community, embodying the true spirit of humanity.

Their names may not appear in official records, but their deeds have etched them as real-life saviours in the memories of those they rescued.
