Delhi HC denies bail to Sharjeel Imam, Umar Khalid, 8 others in 2020 riots case

J&K court rejects bail plea of man accused of raping 70-year-old tourist

New Delhi, Sep 02: Activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and eight others, who are behind bars for last five years, were on Tuesday denied bail by the Delhi High Court in an anti-terror law case linked to the alleged conspiracy behind the February 2020 riots in the national capital.

“All the appeals are dismissed,” a bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur held while acting on the bail pleas of Khalid, Imam, Mohd Saleem Khan, Shifa Ur Rehman, Athar Khan, Meeran Haider, Abdul Khalid Saifi, Gulfisha Fatima and Shadab Ahmed.

A different bench of Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar rejected the appeal of Tasleem Ahmed against a bail rejection order of the trial court.

Khalid, Imam and several others were booked under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and provisions of IPC for allegedly being the “masterminds” of the February 2020 riots, which left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.

The violence erupted during the protests against the CAA and NRC.

The accused persons have been in jail since 2020 and they moved the high court against a trial court order dismissing their bail pleas.

The prosecution opposed the bail pleas saying it was not a case of spontaneous riots but a case where riots were “planned well in advance” with a “sinister motive” and “well-thought-out conspiracy”.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the prosecution, then contended it was a conspiracy to defame India on a global level and merely citing long incarceration was no ground for bail.

He argued the intention behind the February 2020 riots was to globally defame the nation through a “well-planned and orchestrated” criminal conspiracy by the accused persons.

Delhi Police argued that it was not a spontaneous riot but a well-organised act planned in advance in the capital of the country, aimed at a particular day and time.

Imam’s counsel, however, argued he was “completely disconnected” with the place, time and co-accused persons, including Khalid.

Speeches and WhatsApp chats of Imam, who was arrested on August 25 2020, never called for any unrest, it was argued.

While challenging the bail rejection orders of the trial court, Imam, Khalid and others cited their long incarceration and parity with other co-accused who were granted bail.

The prosecution alleged Imam, in his public addresses, propagated the idea of chakka jam as the plan of action to paralyse the government while saying “confrontational violence” had to take place.

It was alleged the protests were part of a conspiracy of the accused persons to cause violence at the time of the visit of then US President Donald Trump.

Khalid, a former JNU student, was arrested by Delhi Police in September 2020 whereas Ahmed was arrested on June 24, 2020.

Haider was a Rashtriya Janata Dal’s (RJD) youth wing leader and Jamia Millia Islamia student who has been in custody since his arrest on April 1, 2020.

Fatima was a student activist who had organised the protest site in Seelampur and was a local resident. According to her lawyer, while she was present at the chakka jam held at Jafrabad, the same was peaceful. She was arrested on April 4, 2020.

‘United Against Hate’ founder Khalid Saifi, who was arrested on February 26, 2020, claimed he was merely present at the Jantar Mantar protest site.

The police arrested Ahmed, Rehman, Mohd Saleem and Athar on June 11, April 26, June 24 and June 29, 2020, respectively.

The bail pleas of Imam, Saifi, Fatima and others, were pending in the high court since 2022 and were heard by different benches from time to time.

All the accused persons denied the prosecution’s allegations.

Delhi Police opposed the bail applications of all accused, saying the communal violence of February 2020 was a case of “clinical and pathological conspiracy”.

Speeches by Khalid, Imam and co-accused created a sense of fear with their common pattern of reference to CAA-NRC, Babri mosque, triple talaq and Kashmir, the police alleged.

The police contended that in a case involving such “grave” offences, the principle of “bail is the rule and jail is the exception” could not be invoked.

It also denied any “attempt by the prosecution” to delay the trial court proceedings, saying the right to speedy trial was not a “free pass”.

Altaf Bukhari urges CM Omar to intervene to protect Rawathpora playground for local youth

Srinagar, Sep 02: Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Tuesday expressed deep concern over the takeover of a playground in Rawathpora, Baghat Barzulla, by a government department.

He wrote on his X handle: “It is deeply concerning that a government department has taken over a piece of land in the Rawathpora area of Baghat Barzulla—a space that has served as a playground for decades for the youth of Rawathpora, Barzulla, Baghat, Parray Pora, Majeed Bagh, Sanat Nagar, Natipora, Chanapora, and surrounding localities. I have been informed construction work is about to begin on this land. This has caused disappointment among the local community, particularly the youth.”

Appealing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene to protect the piece of land for the youth’s sports activates, Bukhari said, “I sincerely appeal to the Hon’ble Chief Minister @OmarAbdullah to step in and protect this land for sports and recreational activities for the youth. This appeal is made purely in the public interest, rising above any political affiliations or considerations. Matters that concern the well-being of our youth should always be treated as issues of community welfare rather than politics.”

“We must not overlook the harsh reality that many young people have already fallen victim to the growing menace of drug abuse, while others remain at risk. Providing them with proper facilities for sports and recreation is essential to guiding them toward healthier, more constructive pursuits. I trust that the Chief Minister, who also holds the portfolio of revenue ministry, will take the necessary steps to ensure that the Rawathpora playground is not only preserved but also developed into a vibrant hub for sporting activities,” the post reads.

NC govt failed people of J&K, BJP stands with flood-affected families: LOP Sunil Sharma

Jammu, Sep 02: Leader of Opposition in J&K Assembly, Sunil Sharma, today addressed a press conference at the BJP headquarters, Trikuta Nagar, Jammu, accompanied by Dr. Narinder Singh, BJP National Secretary & MLA, Sham Lal Sharma, MLA Jammu North, and Dr. Devinder Kumar Manyal, MLA Ramgarh. BJP spokesperson Balbir Ram Rattan was also present on the occasion.

Sunil Sharma expressed deep concern over the widespread devastation caused by incessant rains, cloudbursts, and flash floods that have disrupted normal life across the Jammu region. He informed that the disaster began with the cloudburst in Chashoti village on August 14, followed by another in Kathua on August 16, and further aggravated by continuous rains from August 24 to 26, leading to severe destruction in Jammu, Samba, Udhampur, Reasi, and other districts.

Highlighting the proactive role of BJP representatives, Sharma said, “BJP leaders and MLAs have stood shoulder to shoulder with the people, participating in rescue and relief operations. This is not a favour but our duty towards society.” He added that BJP representatives have consistently taken up the public’s concerns with the government and coordinated with officials of the concerned departments to ensure prompt relief measures.

However, Sharma strongly criticized the NC-led J&K government for its lack of seriousness and inadequate response, terming their efforts as mere “lip service” and “eyewash.” He said that the government demonstrated a perfect example of step-motherly treatment with the Jammu region in this tragedy. He said that despite having control over essential departments like electricity and water supply, the government failed to act on a war footing.

In contrast, Sharma praised the Union Government and the LG administration for their prompt and committed response as was evident in timely rescue operations in Mata Vaishno Devi route tragedy. He recalled that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the region recently, and now, Union Home Minister Amit Shah ji, accompanied by senior officers of the Army, Police, CAPFs, and civil administration personally reviewed the ground situation. The Union Home Minister also met affected families, local MLAs, and BJP leaders to chalk out a comprehensive relief strategy.

Outlining the immediate measures, Sharma informed that the Union Home Minister directed the MLAs and senior leaders to interact with affected families on September 4–6, organize medical camps on September 9, and conduct cleanliness drives on September 10–11. He further added that rehabilitation of nearly 200 families affected by the cloudburst in Margee village of Warwan has been requested.

In a significant announcement, Sharma revealed that all 28 BJP MLAs have contributed Rs 1 crore each, amounting to Rs 28 crore, for relief efforts. Additionally, BJP MPs have also pledged Rs 2.5 crore each, taking the total to Rs 35.5 crore.

The Union Government has already released Rs 209 crore to the UT Disaster Response Fund (UT-DRF) and constituted a high-level committee to submit a report within two days, following which a relief package will be finalized and released within shortest possible time. The Union Home Minister has also asked the CMs of other states to contribute economically to recover from this tragedy, said Sunil Sharma.

Sharma further said that the Army, CAPF, and others will promote the people of health on a mission basis. He stressed that the Union government has made it absolutely clear that every possible maximal help will be provided to the people.

Sunil Sharma also shared that a request has been made to allow the farmers to sell the accumulated aggregates on their fields on their own. The free ration to all the affected people is requested, which will be conveyed to FCI by the Union Home Minister. He added that all the union ministers of departments related to flood affected fields, will visit and organize meetings with the J&K government.

Sunil Sharma reiterated that the NC government in J&K has miserably failed the people in their hour of crisis, while the BJP, Union Government, and LG administration remain fully committed to ensuring maximum relief and rehabilitation.

AI big opportunity; going to increase jobs: Goyal

0
India refuses to yield to Trump's tariffs, focuses on expanding global markets: Piyush Goyal

New Delhi, Sep 02: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers huge opportunities, and it is only going to increase jobs in the country.

He also said, “I have told my office, every person at decision-making levels, has to have the latest version of AI, ChatGPT or whatever else is available, on their phones or their laptops.

“So we are going to use it, but with a condition that any input they make should have at the bottom, that it has been generated or prepared with the support of AI…and has been validated for,” he said here at an industry chamber event.

The minister said that it is an idea whose time has come.

India is a nation which is always willing to adopt new technologies, he said, adding that there will be a few naysayers who would write that technologies like AI would have a terrible impact on jobs.

But, one should not be deterred by that, he said.

“AI will have its role…there will be the problem of unethical use of AI, so human intervention will be required to address that…This is only going to increase jobs…and Indians are agile and very smart..So I look upon this as a great opportunity; we must adopt it,” he said.

He added that there could be short-term blips till unethical use or other problems come, but in the long run, it will be great for India.

In February, the finance ministry directed its officers not to download or use AI tools and apps such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek in office computers and devices, saying they pose confidentiality risks to data and documents.

On March 27, Union minister Jitendra Singh said that there is no specific prohibition on the use and adoption of AI-based tools by any government departments as this is an emerging technology with great potential in citizen-oriented web applications.

However, government functionaries are expected to exercise due diligence and caution to ensure safety, security and confidentiality of public information while using any digital technology or platform, he has said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

Gold rates add Rs 400 to hit highest-ever level of Rs 1.06 lakh/10 g on tariff woes, weak rupee

Gold declines Rs 600 to Rs 99,020 per 10 g; silver plunges Rs 1,000

New Delhi, Sep 02: Gold price stayed firm for the seventh consecutive session and added Rs 400 to hit a fresh peak of Rs 1,06,070 per 10 grams in the national capital on Tuesday amid unabated chase for safe-haven assets triggered by sweeping US tariffs and tumbling rupee against American currency.

According to the All India Sarafa Association, the precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had settled at Rs 1,05,670 per 10 grams on Monday.

The price of gold of 99.5 per cent purity also increased Rs 400 to hit a new record of Rs 1,05,200 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Tuesday. It had settled at Rs 1,04,800 per 10 grams in the previous market session.

The yellow metal has added Rs 5,900 per 10 grams in the past seven sessions. Gold prices have risen 34.35 per cent in the current calendar year, climbing from Rs 78,950 per 10 grams on December 31, 2024.

Renisha Chainani, Head of Research at Augmont, said, “Gold prices gained to hit record highs on Tuesday after a US appeals court last week upheld a decision that the White House’s so-called reciprocal tariffs were unlawful.”

The court said the tariffs could remain in place until mid-October, however, President Donald Trump criticised the decision and said he would challenge the ruling in the Supreme Court.

According to commodities market experts, this development sparked increased uncertainty over the economic impact of US tariffs, a bulk of which took effect in August. Any ruling against the tariffs will also force Washington to negotiate recent deals with major trading partners.

Meanwhile, silver prices rose Rs 100 to hit yet another record high of Rs 1,26,100 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Tuesday.

The white metal had ended at Rs 1,26,000 per kg on Monday, as per the Sarafa Association.

In the past three sessions, the white metal prices rallied Rs 7,100 per kg. During this year so far, silver has outperformed gold. The white metal has jumped 40.58 per cent since the level of Rs 89,700 per kilogram at the end of December 2024.

Traders said the deteriorating value of the rupee and rising geopolitical tensions have made bullion more attractive as a safe-haven asset.

On Tuesday, rupee depreciated 8 paise to close at an all-time low of 88.18 against the US dollar, as Indo-US trade deal uncertainty and weak domestic equity markets pressurised the local unit.

In the international market, spot gold prices retreated from all-time high levels to trade at USD 3,477.41 per ounce in New York. During intraday, the yellow metal jumped to hit a record high of USD 3,508.54 per ounce.

“Spot gold prices hit a record high of USD 3,508 per ounce amid concerns over the US Federal Reserve’s independence, rising expectations of interest rate cuts, and ongoing tariff-related uncertainty, all of which boosted safe-haven demand,” Deveya Gaglani, Senior Research Analyst – Commodities, Axis Securities, said.

However, spot silver declined 1.08 per cent to trade at USD 40.29 per ounce. Analysts attributed the sharp fall in silver prices to sudden profit-booking by short-term investors.

“Silver extended its remarkable rally, surging past USD 40 per ounce for the first time since 2011, with spot prices reaching as high as USD 41.24 per ounce on Monday, before settling near USD 39.71 per ounce.

“The white metal had climbed further on Tuesday towards the USD 40.85 level, its strongest level in over a decade,” said Riya Singh, Research Analyst, Commodities and Currency, Emkay Global Financial Services.

Chintan Mehta, CEO, Abans Financial Services, said geopolitics also remain in focus, with signs of strengthening ties between India, Russia, and China, which could weigh on US influence and the dollar, favouring bullion prices in the process.

“Investors are now awaiting the upcoming US macroeconomic data including job openings, ADP employment, and non-farm payrolls, for fresh cues on the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy path,” Mehta added.
