Amit Shah tours flood-affected areas in Jammu, assures victims of relief

Jammu, Sep 01: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday toured the flood-hit Jammu and assured some of the victims he met of relief and rehabilitation.

Shah was accompanied by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Leader of Opposition in the J-K Assembly Sunil Sharma, and was briefed by divisional commissioner, Jammu Ramesh Kumar and other senior officers, officials said.

The home minister had reached Jammu on Sunday night to assess the flood situation and the relief efforts.

After meeting visitors at Raj Bhavan, he left for Mangu Chak, one of the worst-hit villages near Jammu Airport, for a first-hand account of the situation.

He interacted with the villagers and assured them proper relief and rehabilitation, officials said.

Shah also stopped on the Tawi bridge near Bikram Chowk and inspected the damage along the riverbanks.

“The home minister visited my home and assured relief…there is nothing left in my house after last week’s deluge,” Bhan Singh, a resident of Mangu Chak, told PTI.

A middle-aged Singh said he had never witnessed such a flood in his life. “It damaged all household goods like fridges, air conditioners and even clothes.”

Another resident, Chain Dass, said he was lucky to survive the deluge, which submerged the entire village.

“We are happy the home minister visited us and took stock of the situation,” he said, hoping the authorities will drain the water, and take steps such a flood never recurs.

He alleged that their village got flooded due to the construction of a circular road.

After conducting the tour, Shah returned to Raj Bhawan to chair a meeting attended by Sinha, Abdullah, Sharma, the DGP of police, and several officials of the Centre and the Union Territory administration.

Shah will also review the damage caused to the border security grid by the flash floods, officials said.

More than 130 people have been killed and 33 have gone missing in cloudbursts, landslides and flash floods in Kishtwar, Kathua, Reasi, and Ramban districts since August 14.

The dead include 34 pilgrims who were hit by a landslide en route to Mata Vaishno Devi shrine on August 26.

Record rainfall during August 26-27 caused flash floods in low-lying areas in Jammu and other plains, causing heavy damage to infrastructure.

Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed an unprecedented monsoon onslaught, with Jammu logging 380 mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Wednesday, the highest ever recorded in the city since 1910 when the observatory was set up.

Udhampur received the highest recorded rainfall of 630 mm for the same 24-hour period, surpassing the earlier highest of 342 mm on July 31, 2019, a spokesperson of the Meteorological department said.

This is the home minister’s second visit to Jammu in three months.

Before this, he had visited the district on May 29, nearly three weeks after the Indian armed forces carried out missile strikes on terror infrastructure across the border in reprisal to the April 22 Pahalgam attack in which terrorists killed 26 people, mostly tourists.

On August 24, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited Jammu to take stock of the situation following flash floods triggered by a cloudburst in Chisoti village in Kishtwar district.

Singh’s plan to visit the devastated village, on the way to Machail Mata shrine, was scuppered by inclement weather and the blocking of a road by a fresh landslide in Paddar Sub-division.

Sixty-five people, mostly pilgrims, were killed, over 100 others injured, and 32 went missing after flash floods in Chisoti on August 14.

Gulmarg to host inaugural Zabarvan Legends Series in October

Gulmarg, Sep 01: Gulmarg, famed for its winter slopes, is preparing to welcome a new chapter in adventure tourism as the inaugural Zabarvan Legends Series is scheduled to be held from October 9 to 12.

The event, billed as India’s premier international mountain sports initiative, will bring together 50 athletes, including 25 from overseas, for a series of mountain biking competitions. The races will cover alpine forests, meadows and steep descents, designed to push the limits of both skill and stamina.

Organisers told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the event seeks to project Gulmarg not just as a winter destination but as a year-round hub for outdoor adventure. “The Zabarvan Legends Series is not just a race, it’s a movement,” said Sehan Shetty, Founder and Owner of Zabarvan. “We want to celebrate the natural grandeur of Gulmarg, bring global attention to India’s mountain sports potential, and create new opportunities for tourism, sport, and local communities.”

Supported by the Jammu and Kashmir administration and backed by corporate partners, the Gulmarg leg highlights the synergy between adventure sport and sustainable tourism. The Zabarvan Legends Series will also expand beyond Kashmir, with upcoming editions planned for Shillong and Guwahati, linking diverse mountain landscapes under a single sporting banner.

The initiative is expected to provide fresh impetus to the Valley’s tourism sector, which has seen a steady rise in footfall this year. By showcasing Gulmarg’s potential for summer adventure sports, the organisers hope to diversify tourism opportunities and provide local communities with new avenues of livelihood. [KNT]

PM Modi meets President Putin; calls for ending Ukraine conflict as soon as possible

Tianjin (China), Sep 01: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday conveyed to Russian President Vladimir Putin that it is humanity’s call to end the Ukraine conflict as soon as possible.

Modi and Putin met on the margins of the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) against the backdrop of possibly the worst phase in India-US relations in over two decades, with the strain exacerbated by President Donald Trump’s tariff policy and constant criticism of New Delhi by his administration.

The prime minister and the Russian president also deliberated on bilateral cooperation in sectors such as economic, financial, and energy and expressed satisfaction with the sustained growth in bilateral ties in these areas, according to an Indian readout.

We welcome all recent efforts to bring peace to Ukraine and hope that all the relevant sides will move forward “constructively”, Modi said in his televised opening remarks.

The call of humanity is to end the conflict as soon as possible and find ways to bring permanent peace to the region, he said.

Modi also said that India is waiting to receive the Russian leader.

Putin is set to travel to India in December for summit talks with Modi.

India and Russia always moved forward shoulder-to-shoulder even in difficult times, Modi said.

He said close relations between India and Russia are significant for global peace, stability and prosperity.

“The two leaders also discussed regional and global issues, including the latest developments concerning Ukraine,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

“The prime minister reiterated his support for the recent initiatives that have been taken to address the conflict in Ukraine, and emphasised the need to expedite a cessation of the conflict, and find a durable peace settlement,” it said.

The two leaders reaffirmed their support for further strengthening of the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between the two countries, according to the MEA statement.

Denied the CEO job at Applebee’s, she came back and fired the guy who said ‘No’

Srinagar, Sept 01: Julia Stewart, now CEO of DineEquity Inc., recently joined the Matthews Mentality Podcast and shared a riveting story from her career’s full arc. Years after being rejected, she purchased the entire company, and her first move was to fire the very boss who once dismissed her.

As president of Applebee’s, Stewart successfully revitalized the brand, doubling its stock price. She says she was led to believe that delivering results would secure her promotion to CEO.

However, when she raised the topic with the then-chairman—backed by her performance—he responded curtly, “No—not ever,” without giving her any reason.

Stewart stepped away from Applebee’s. She next took the reins at IHOP, where she spent five years restoring its brand and growth trajectory. Stewart pitched strategic expansion and set her sights on Applebee’s. DineEquity, IHOP’ parent company, borrowed $2.3 billion to acquire Applebee’s. After the acquisition closed, Stewart personally informed the former Applebee’s CEO that—since there was no room for two leaders—he was being replaced.

Stewart went on to serve as chair and CEO of the parent company, Dine Brands Global, for a decade. At 70, she is still working. She’s currently a board member at Bojangles, among other places, and the founder of a wellness app.Bottom of Form
