Srinagar-Jammu NH closed for 4th day

Ramban, Aug 29: The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained blocked for the fourth consecutive day between Udhampur and Chenani sector due to the sinking of road stretches at four different locations on Friday.

The blockage is due to the sinking of road sections at four different locations along the highway.

Meanwhile, road restoration efforts are ongoing around the clock.

To assist in these repairs, a dozen dumper trucks and JCB machines have been deployed to fill in the washed-away portions of the road and clear the landslides between the Udhampur and Chenani sectors of the highway.

On Friday, Inspector General of Traffic Police (IGP), Suleman Choudhary, along with SSP Traffic, National Highway, Ramban, inspected the highway from Chenani to Udhampur route.

Officials said that no vehicular traffic movement would be allowed from Nagrota, Jammu, towards Reasi, Chenani, Patnitop, Doda, Ramban, Banihal, and Srinagar.

Commuters from Katra and Udhampur have been advised to keep their photo identity cards to prove their identification so that their movement could be facilitated smoothly.

Traffic authorities have advised travellers not to undertake journeys on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway until the road restoration work is complete and the surface is safe for travel.

They have also urged the people not to heed rumours regarding the road status.

Meanwhile, the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway remained open.

Traffic authorities said one tube of each bridge of Lakhanpur-Madhopur, Sahar Khad, had been damaged due to incessant rains.

However, the second tube of each bridge was operational for vehicular movement on a regulatory basis.

The commuters have been advised to maintain lane discipline to avoid congestion.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Jitendra Singh, along with Deputy Commissioner Udhampur Saloni Rai, visited the flash flood-affected Udhampur and Chenani areas along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.

The union minister visited the Thard and Bali Nullah areas to assess the situation.

Singh said road restoration work was going on around the clock and is likely to be completed on Saturday.

Mehbooba says BGSBU in shambles, needs urgent revival

‘Let the people judge for themselves’, says Mehbooba after Speaker denies rejecting PDP resolution on 13 July

Srinagar, Aug 29: Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU), Rajouri, has once again come to the spotlight over the non-availability of the senior faculty in the varsity, leaving the students at the receiving end.

As already reported by Greater Kashmir, BGSBU is grappling with a severe faculty crisis, with 60.4 percent of the sanctioned teaching posts, including all 22 posts of professors, lying vacant.

This shortfall of the teaching faculty has left junior faculty members overburdened, impacting the quality of education.

The number of vacant positions of teaching faculty was revealed through an RTI filed by Raman Kumar Sharma.

As per the RTI reply, 80 assistant professors (stage II and III and scale I), 17 lecturers, and one teaching assistant are currently running the show.

In absence of the senior teaching faculty, the juniors hold together the teaching system in the absence of the senior faculty, including all 22 professors.

As per the data, 48 of the 50 associate professor posts and 72 of the 82 assistant professor posts are vacant at BGSBU.

Meanwhile, former chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mehbooba Mufti, on Friday said that BGSBU, the dream project of former chief minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed’s and on which former BGSBU VC Masud Choudary had toiled hard, lied in a shambles now.

“Once envisioned as a centre of learning, it has instead become a site of gross administrative failure and faculty exploitation. A place meant to empower generations has mutated into a symbol of neglect and abject exploitation,” Mehbooba posted on microblogging site ‘X’.

The post reads that with 80 percent of posts in the varsity vacant, no permanent faculty, and zero infrastructure, contractual staff were exploited, leaving students neglected.

“The vice chancellor has failed to make a single bold or meaningful decision. His presence has only deepened the festering administrative paralysis. BSBGU is in urgent need of rescue,” the post reads.

Hours after Mehbooba posted on X about the functioning of BGSBU, the varsity, without mentioning her, shared the achievements of the past year.

In a post on X, BGSBU authorities said that in the past year, the varsity had made “remarkable strides in academics, infrastructure and research, setting new benchmarks in higher education”.

“In line with NEP-2020, BGSBU introduced 27 new UG and PG programmes, established six new departments, and launched 4-year UG programmes with multiple entry-exit options for flexibility and global competitiveness,” the BGSBU post reads on X.

It read that the varsity had gone fully digital in admissions, examinations, and student services through the adoption of Samarth ERP, ensuring efficiency, transparency, and student-centric governance.

“Secured Rs 20 crore under RUSA for infrastructure strengthening and Rs 2 crore under CAPEX for smart classrooms – modernising teaching-learning spaces and preparing students for the future. Achieved a substantial increase in grant-in-aid from the government of JK (UT),” the post reads.

The post reads that the varsity cleared several long-pending cases of promotion, boosting morale, professional growth, and academic excellence across the university.

“Initiated the revival of stalled projects like the central library, guest house, new academic departments, and scholars’ hostel. Renovated student hostels with modern facilities. Developed a state-of-the-art football ground with astroturf,” the post reads.

The varsity authorities claimed that with an over 50 percent increase in Gross Enrollment Rate (GER), BGSBU was attracting students from diverse backgrounds.

Gold surges Rs 2,100 to scale new peak of Rs 1,03,670/10 g; silver slips Rs 1,000

Silver rallies to hit fresh peak, gold gains Rs 540 as Israel-Iran conflict intensifies

New Delhi, Aug 29: Gold prices rallied Rs 2,100 to hit a fresh all-time high of Rs 1,03,670 per 10 grams in the national capital on Friday due to persistent buying by stockists and depreciation in rupee, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

The precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had closed at Rs 1,01,570 per 10 grams on Thursday.

Continuing the upside momentum for the fourth straight session, gold of 99.5 per cent purity surged Rs 2,100 to hit a new lifetime high of Rs 1,03,100 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Friday, a day after settling at Rs 1,01,000 per 10 grams.

Gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity had recorded their lifetime highs of Rs 1,03,420 and Rs 1,03,000 per 10 grams, respectively, on August 8 when the prices went up by Rs 800 per 10 grams. This was on the heels of a steep gain of Rs 3,600 per 10 gram in the preceding session on August 7.

“Gold prices witnessed a sharp gain and surged to a new record high in the domestic markets, led by a weaker rupee and a positive trend in the overseas market.

“The Indian rupee hit an all-time low, raising concerns about the impact of 50 per cent US tariffs on the country’s GDP,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

On Friday, the rupee breached the 88-mark for the first time and closed at an all-time low of 88.19 (provisional) against the US dollar, registering a sharp decline of 61 paise amid heightened concerns over a trade deal between India and the US.

During the week, the precious metal prices have increased by Rs 3,300 or 3.29 per cent.

Meanwhile, silver prices retreated from its all-time high level and declined Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,19,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Friday. The white metal had finished at Rs 1,20,000 per kg on Thursday.

In futures trade, the most-traded gold contract for October delivery climbed Rs 713 or 0.70 per cent to hit a fresh peak of Rs 1,02,813 per 10 grams on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX).

Subsequently, the precious metal for December delivery appreciated by Rs 702 or 0.68 per cent to hit a fresh all-time high of Rs 1,03,849 per 10 grams.

“Gold after a brief decline earlier this month is now trading higher on Friday, while silver hit an all-time high clearly showing the white metal’s consistent outperformance in recent weeks.

“Heightened political uncertainty over the possible dismissal of the Fed Governor and the announcement of steep tariffs on Indian products came into effect sparked safe-haven buying, pushing bullion higher amid concerns about trade tensions and global growth,” said Trivesh D, Chief Operating Officer of brokerage firm Tradejini.

Additionally, the most-traded silver futures contract for September delivery increased Rs 651 to hit an all-time high of Rs 1,17,825 per kilogram.

The white metal futures for December contract also rallied Rs 641 or 0.54 per cent to hit a fresh peak of Rs 1,19,285 per kg on the MCX.

“The industrial demand for silver makes it even better, but gold is still a good hedge against uncertainty. In the last five years, both metals continued to make new records every year, underlining their role in volatile markets,” Trivesh D said.

In the overseas markets, spot gold was trading flat at USD 3,407.39 per ounce in New York.

“Gold prices rose after safe-haven demand on concerns that political pressure on the Federal Reserve could accelerate interest rate cuts,” Renisha Chainani, Head – Research at Augmont, said.

Spot silver went down by 0.52 per cent to trade at USD 38.84 per ounce.

Trivesh D further said, “Silver is currently trading near a resistance of USD 39.60 per per ounce, and if this level is breached, it could move towards USD 44 per ounce, implying close to a 12 per cent appreciation from current levels.”

Srinagar-Jammu highway closure hits apple, mutton trade

Srinagar-Jammu highway closure hits apple, mutton trade

Srinagar, Aug 29: The prolonged closure of the Srinagar-Jammu Highway has dealt a severe blow to Kashmir’s apple and mutton industries, leaving over scores of trucks stranded at different stretches of the route.

At Qazigund, scores of fruit-laden trucks are stuck, while many more are stranded between Qazigund and Khanbal in Anantnag district. Trucks carrying other essential commodities are also reported to be halted at Kathua, worsening the crisis.

Zahoor Ahmad Bhat, president of the Apple Farmers Federation of Kashmir, said that growers are deeply distressed as high-density apple consignments, which have a shorter shelf life compared to the delicious variety, remain stuck for days. “Fruit growers and traders in Kashmir who harvested their high-density apple crop are worried as trucks are stranded on the highway. The Mughal Road is also uncertain for smooth heavy truckloads. This variety of apple is perishable, and its storage life is also less. We expect the government to restore the highway as early as possible for smooth transportation of the apple,” he said.

Apart from fruit, the highway closure has also hampered the supply of mutton to the Valley, leading to concerns among traders over possible shortages if the route remains blocked.Jammu & Kashmir tourism packages

Mukesh Ambani bets big on AI, genomics as new growth drivers

Mukesh Ambani bets big on AI, genomics as new growth drivers

Mumbai, Aug 29: India, with its scale, talent and entrepreneurial spirit, is uniquely positioned to lead in this new era of artificial intelligence (AI) and genomics, and Reliance has positioned itself confidently to lead the nation’s mission to ensure that abundance and affordability become the birthright of every Indian, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani said on Friday.

Addressing the 48th Annual General Meeting (AGM), Ambani said that they are expanding into the frontiers of Digital Health, Life Sciences, and Genomics.

“And we are developing AI as a new growth engine, besides embedding AI across all our businesses – from retail to telecom, from energy to entertainment,” he said in his address to shareholders.

Aiming to more than double EBITDA by 2027 from the 2022 level, he said that our conventional and non-conventional workforce has grown to nearly 6.8 lakh people.

“I see this growing to more than 10 lakh people over the next few years. It gives me immense satisfaction to say that we rank among the most admired employers and largest job creators in India,” said Ambani.

Reliance Jio family has crossed 500 million customers. Jio’s revenue was Rs 1,28,218 crore ($15 billion), a growth of 17 per cent YoY in FY25, and EBITDA was Rs 64,170 crore ($7.5 billion).

“These figures are a testimony to the enormous value Jio has already created, and even greater value it is destined to create. Today, it is my proud privilege to announce that Jio is making all arrangements to file for its IPO. We are aiming to list Jio by the first half of 2026, subject to all necessary approvals,” said the Reliance Industries Chairman.

He also announced the launch of Reliance Intelligence, a wholly owned unit focused on AI. The unit will build gigawatt-scale, AI-ready data centres in Jamnagar, deliver AI services across education, health and agriculture, and attract top global talent.

Partnerships with Google and Meta will support its ambitions. Ambani called AI the “Kamdhenu of our age”, highlighting his belief that it will drive productivity and human potential.

Reliance and Meta will form a joint venture to develop Llama-based agentic enterprise AI platforms and tools. Reliance will also work with Google Cloud to establish a state-of-the-art, AI-focused cloud region dedicated to Reliance in Jamnagar.

In consumer businesses, Reliance Consumer Products Ltd will be reorganised into a direct subsidiary, giving more independence to a portfolio that includes Campa Cola, Independence, and other fast-growing brands.

The business has already scaled to Rs 11,500 crore in revenue in FY25, with ambitions to reach Rs 1 lakh crore within five years.

“The global economy today is navigating through an era of great uncertainty. Geopolitical tensions are rising, volatility is persistent, and predictability is scarce. The world is realising that conflict produces no winners, whereas co-operation ensures shared prosperity. When nations co-operate, trade flows freely, investments flourish, and everyone wins,” Ambani said.
