India’s 7.7 pc GDP growth in FY26 shows foundation of economy is strong: PM Modi

Daman, Jun 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the 7.7 per cent GDP growth for fiscal 2025-26 shows the foundation of India’s economy was strong, and the country can manage itself amidst the ongoing global turmoil with the collective effort of its 140 crore citizens.

He maintained that India is the fastest growing major economy in the world.

Modi said India clocked 7.7 per cent GDP growth in the fiscal year 2025-26, while the expansion was 7.8 per cent in the January-March quarter.

“The news that has come today makes it clear how strong the foundation of India’s economy is,” he said while speaking at an event in Daman, where he launched development projects of Rs 2,970 crore and inaugurated a new terminal of the airport in the Union Territory.

“I left Delhi this morning, but the (GDP) figures that have come in front of me are really making me happy, and I also want to share this happiness with you,” Modi told the gathering.

Even in this bad phase of global crisis, India is managing itself well with the collective efforts of its 140 crore citizens, the PM asserted in comments coming in the backdrop of the more than three-month-old conflict in West Asia which has disrupted global energy supplies.

The reform express that this country is running on, the amount of infrastructure that is being developed, the amount of work that is being done for the welfare of the poor at all levels have resulted in the country becoming the fastest moving among major economies, the PM said.

“I assure countrymen that despite the global crisis, India will continue to move forward at a fast pace with the same determination on the path of reform, performance and transformation. This is my guarantee to the people of the country,” Modi asserted.

While development is important for his government, it is equally important that such a development model is sustainable, Modi pointed out.

He said the first test of development for the NDA government is the change in the lives of the poor, tribals and middle class, and for this, the health sector remains its utmost priority.

Modi maintained that before 2014, when he assumed office, only 60 per cent of children were fully vaccinated in the country, but today this figure has risen to nearly 90 per cent.

On improvement in institutional deliveries, he pointed out that more than 90 per cent of the child births are now taking place in hospitals.

Women have benefited the most from health schemes, he added.

He said the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu is also the identity and heritage of India, and the government is focused on its development.

The UT is dreaming of developing like Singapore, and infrastructure projects like NAMO airport, the iconic bridge on Damanganga river, and the convention centre will lay the foundation of a new vision about its future, he said.

“There will be huge opportunities here from the hospitality economy. The vision that we have prepared for the blue economy in this region will also come true with the help of high tech infrastructure,” he said.

Daman has also seen reforms in the education sector, and many efforts are being taken to encourage girls to continue education, he said.

“Our preparations of today will strengthen Indian workforce in the fields of design, law, engineering, medical education, IT, drone and renewable energy. For this, expansion of professional institutes is vital,” he said.

The PM said India is focused on tourism, and small places are being connected with big opportunities, with heritage tourism, beach tourism, eco tourism, and adventure tourism getting new energy.

The UT of DNH, Daman and Diu provides huge opportunity for growth in the sector, and is benefiting from policies as it has seen nearly 10-time growth in tourist footfall within a few years, Modi pointed out.

The projects Modi dedicated span healthcare, civil aviation, tourism, infrastructure, connectivity and public welfare sectors, including a new terminal building of NAMO Airport, the NAMO Hospital, an iconic bridge, the Daman convention centre and the NIFT campus at Daman.

Modi also laid the foundation stone of important projects costing Rs 885 crore for the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. These projects include development of port facilities on the eastern and western sides of Kalpeni and Kadmat islands there.

New Delhi, June 05: The National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS), an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Learning Links Foundation (LLF) to implement the Amazon Future Engineer (AFE) programme across Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs) in the country.

The partnership between NESTS and Learning Links Foundation to implement the Amazon Future Engineer programme has impacted approximately 80,000 students of Classes VI to IX from 2022 till date. Building on the success of this collaboration, the renewed MoU, effective from 1st April 2026 to 31st March 2028, marks another significant step towards strengthening digital and technological education among tribal students through Amazon’s corporate philanthropy initiative in India.

Under this collaboration, the programme will expand to cover 443 EMRSs, and is expected to impact over 2 lakh students from Classes VI to IX, with a focus on building foundational and advanced skills in emerging technologies.

Beyond AI curriculum integration, Amazon is also collaborating with the NESTS to strengthen digital infrastructure across underserved schools. Building on this effort, in AY 2026-27, 900+ digital devices will be provided to 238 EMRSs enabling access to technology-enabled learning for tribal students.

The AFE programme will cover three key components: Computer Science Fundamentals: Introducing coding, computational thinking, and problem-solving skills; Artificial Intelligence (AI) Literacy: Building awareness of AI concepts through experiential and project-based learning; and Career Exposure: Providing insights into technology-driven career pathways through virtual industry exposure and career introduction.

The programme adopts an activity-based and experiential learning approach, enabling students to connect classroom learning with real-world applications and fostering innovation and critical thinking.

As part of the initiative, Learning Links Foundation (LLF) will provide teacher training, academic support, and mentoring through qualified resource persons, along with continuous monitoring and feedback mechanisms to ensure effective implementation.

NESTS will ensure the nomination and active participation of EMRS teachers in the capacity-building programme, and support the effective implementation of the AFE curriculum across participating schools through strong coordination with EMRS teachers.

ACB books former Horticulture officials, contractor in Zawoora Garden case

Srinagar, June 05: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has registered a corruption case against former Horticulture Department officials, committee members and a private contractor over alleged financial irregularities and procedural violations in development works executed at Zawoora Garden in Srinagar, officials said on Friday.

According to a statement issued, the case was registered following the outcome of a Joint Surprise Check conducted into allegations of corruption, financial irregularities, procedural violations and abuse of official position in connection with works executed by the Horticulture Department at Zawoora Garden.

The statement said the Joint Surprise Check was initiated by Police Station ACB Srinagar to examine allegations relating to the development of the Centre of Excellence at Zawoora Garden. The enquiry revealed prima facie evidence of serious irregularities in the tendering and execution of works undertaken under the project.

“During the verification, it surfaced that the NIT was allegedly framed in a manner that lacked specific quality parameters and technical specifications, thereby creating scope for arbitrary decision-making. It was further found that the financial provisions incorporated in the tender were substantially higher than those envisaged in the approved Detailed Project Report (DPR),” the spokesperson said.

The enquiry also revealed that the eligibility criteria relating to financial turnover were allegedly fixed at an unusually high threshold despite the actual requirement being significantly lower. The statement said the restrictive condition allegedly curtailed fair competition and favoured a particular bidder.

The spokesperson said the findings of the Joint Surprise Check prima facie indicate abuse of official position, criminal misconduct and criminal conspiracy involving public servants and the beneficiary private firm, resulting in undue pecuniary advantage to the contractor and corresponding loss to the government.

“Accordingly, FIR No. 09/2026 has been registered at Police Station ACB Srinagar under Section 5(1)(d) read with Section 5(2) of the J&K Prevention of Corruption Act, Svt. 2006, and Section 120-B RPC against the then Director Horticulture Kashmir, members of the District Level Purchase Committee (DLPC), members of the Inspection Committee, the beneficiary contractor M/S Fruit Master Agro Fresh Pvt. Ltd., and other involved persons,” the spokesperson said.

He added that further investigation has been taken up to identify the role and culpability of all concerned and to take appropriate legal action in accordance with law.

Smart borders to come up soon, new security grid to feature cutting-edge tech: Amit Shah

Agartala, Jun 5: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said the government’s “smart border” project is in the final stage, and the new security grid will feature cutting-edge tech, local administration and border sentinels.

Shah, addressing BSF personnel at Lankamura Border Outpost in Tripura, said wherever troops of the force is deployed, “we will build smart borders there”.

“Smart borders will be introduced soon with a new security grid to include cutting-edge tech, local administration and border sentinels,” the home minister said.

“The concept of smart border will be implemented in seven to eight places of the country as a pilot project. I request the Union home secretary and the director general of the BSF to visit border areas, and hold talks,” Shah said.

Shah said every border has its own challenges, from human trafficking and arms smuggling to drug supply, “but the BSF jawans do their best to face these challenges”.

“To make India a ‘viksit’ (developed) nation by 2047, we have to stop the entry of fake notes, human trafficking and drugs smuggling from across the borders,” the senior BJP leader said.

Shah had in May said the government will launch a tech-enabled “smart border” project by the next year to make the 6,000-km fronts with Pakistan and Bangladesh impenetrable, and ensure that the “conspiracy” to change the demography of the country is defeated.

“The government of India has decided that not only will we stop infiltration, but we will find each and every infiltrator and send them out of the country,” the home minister had said.

“I want to assure BSF troops that we will launch the smart border project within the 60th year of its raising, and we will make the Bangladesh and Pakistan borders impenetrable through major technical assistance,” Shah had said in New Delhi on May 22, while delivering the annual Rustamji Memorial lecture hosted by the BSF.

The “smart border” will use technology, drones, radars and smart cameras to help create an impenetrable border, he told the gathering.

NC will attend INDIA bloc’s meeting on June 8: Farooq Abdullah

Srinagar, Jun 5: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Friday said his party will attend the meeting of the INDIA bloc in Delhi on June 8.

“The meeting is going to taking place. Omar (Abdullah) or I, one of us will go. Obviously, we are part of that. We will be there,” Abdullah told reporters in Hazratbal here.

To a question on LoP Sunil Shamra’s remark about Article 370 having been “burried”, he said the party will keep the issue of the special status alive “till eternity”.

“The day all of us get buried in Kashmir, it (Article 370) will also be buried that day,” the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister asserted.

The National Conference on Wednesday announced that its legislators will protest in Delhi to press for the restoration of statehood and special status.

Article 370 not responsible for lack of development in J&K, says CM Omar

Article 370 not responsible for lack of development in J&K, says CM Omar

Srinagar, June 05: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that Article 370 was never responsible for the lack of development in the erstwhile state, asserting that its abrogation had not led to any extraordinary economic transformation in the region.

Speaking at The Hindu Huddle, Omar said that Jammu and Kashmir’s developmental and economic challenges were largely the result of decades of violence and instability rather than its former special constitutional status.

“Article 370 was never a cause of any lack of development in Jammu and Kashmir, nor has its revocation suddenly resulted in massive development,” he said.

The National Conference leader said the region had suffered economically due to nearly three decades of militancy, which discouraged investors and businesses from operating in Jammu and Kashmir.

“People will not invest money in a part of the country that they deem to be unsafe. The perception that Jammu and Kashmir was an unsafe place to visit or do business in is what hurt us, not Article 370,” Abdullah said.

He also accused the BJP of using Article 370 as a political tool, stating that similar constitutional protections continue to exist in other parts of the country without attracting the same criticism.

Abdullah pointed out that restrictions on land ownership and entry permits remain in places like Lakshadweep and parts of the Northeast, but are rarely questioned.

“The only thing that was talked about was Jammu and Kashmir and the fact that you couldn’t buy land there. That was the stick used to beat us with,” he said.

Referring to the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister said it remained the foremost priority of his government, though there was still no clarity regarding the conditions required for its return.

“My target is to achieve statehood, yet I have no idea what goals I have to achieve to reach that point,” he said.

Omar further stated that governance would improve once Jammu and Kashmir regains statehood, arguing that the powers of an elected government remain limited under the existing Union Territory framework.

“It is better to be a state than a Union Territory. That is what we are trying to correct,” Abdullah added. —(KNO)

If everyone is sincere, let us suspend parties to launch collective movement: CM Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, June 05: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday proposed suspending party identities and launching a collective democratic movement for restoration of rights of the rights of people of Jammu & Kashmir.

Speaking at The Hindu Huddle, the CM as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer(KNO), Omar said “If everyone is sincere, let us suspend political parties and stand together on one movement platform. We should fight democratically and peacefully until the constitutional rights and protections taken away in 2019 are restored.”

The CM said he would be willing to make personal political sacrifices if such a united movement emerged.

“I will be the first one to resign. Let representatives come from a common movement platform,” he said.

He stressed that any effort to regain rights must be consistent and not limited to symbolic gestures.

“People will call it a drama if there is no sincerity and continuity. It cannot be a one-off exercise. Continuous efforts are needed to build public trust,” he said.

The CM said there were efforts in different parts of the country to radicalise youngsters on religious lines and warned that such trends could have wider consequences.

“When you see an effort to radicalise youngsters, particularly in the north of the country, on religious lines, at the behest of our ruling party, you cannot expect there will be no knock-on effect elsewhere,” he said.

Anti-drug fight now a people’s movement in J&K: LG Sinha

Ganderbal, June 05: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday said that the fight against drugs and narco-terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir has evolved into a people’s movement, asserting that the administration will continue its crackdown until drug smugglers and narco-terrorists are completely eradicated from the Union Territory.

Addressing a gathering during an anti-drug campaign programme in Ganderbal, the Lieutenant Governor said the “Drug-Free Jammu and Kashmir” campaign, launched 55 days ago, aims to protect the youth from the menace of drug addiction and dismantle networks financing terrorism through narcotics trade.

According to the Lieutenant Governor, drugs not only destroy the future of young people but also serve as a major source of terror funding, enabling anti-national elements to procure weapons and fuel violence in Jammu and Kashmir.

Describing narco-terrorists as “enemies of the people and the youth,” Sinha said several such elements operating from across the border as well as within Jammu and Kashmir are involved in drug trafficking networks.

He warned that those engaged in narco-terrorism are already paying a heavy price and would face even stricter action in the future.

The Lieutenant Governor said the administration has adopted a three-pronged strategy to tackle the menace, focusing on dismantling supply chains, creating awareness and rehabilitating victims of addiction.

He said the Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security agencies are actively working to break drug networks, arrest traffickers and seize illegally acquired assets. He added that structures built from illicit proceeds, including those raised on encroached government land, are also being demolished.

Highlighting awareness initiatives, Sinha appreciated the Ganderbal district administration and police for conducting extensive outreach programmes across villages and panchayats to educate people about the dangers of drug abuse.

On rehabilitation, he said the administration is committed to ensuring treatment, counselling and employment opportunities for those affected by addiction, adding that every effort is being made to reintegrate them into society with dignity and compassion.

Sharing details of the campaign’s progress, the Lieutenant Governor said that during the past 55 days, 1,036 FIRs have been registered against drug smugglers and 1,128 traffickers arrested.

He said 63 smugglers have been booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA), more than 100 properties attached and over 700 driving licences cancelled.

He further said recommendations have been made for cancellation of vehicle registrations and passports of 130 major drug smugglers, while several other actions are underway.

Seeking public support for the anti-drug drive, Sinha asked people whether they wanted the crackdown on smugglers to continue, receiving an overwhelming response in favour of stricter action.

“We will not rest until drug smugglers and narco-terrorists are completely wiped out from the soil of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said, assuring people that the administration would continue working tirelessly to safeguard society and protect future generations from the scourge of drugs. —(KNO)
