Everyday bedroom items you should replace now, as per Harvard trained gastroenterologist

Srinagar, Aug 26: While your bedroom is meant to be a sanctuary, However, did you know that you could be keeping some everyday items that are highly toxic. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, MD, MPH— a board-certified gastroenterologist, hepatologist, and interventional endoscopist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford— shared an important reminder on Instagram. In his post, Dr. Sethi highlighted three common household items that could negatively affect gut health, sleep quality, and overall well-being if not replaced or used with caution.

“Did you know your bedroom might be silently affecting your gut, sleep, and long-term health? In this eye-opening video, Harvard and Stanford-trained doctor Dr. Sethi breaks down 3 common items found in most bedrooms that you should throw out ASAP,” his post read.

1. Old Pillows (over 1–2 years)
Pillows are breeding grounds for dust mites, allergens, sweat, and even fungi. Dr. Palleti Siva Karthik Reddy explains that dust mite proteins can spark allergic reactions and asthma. A study even found thousands of fungal spores per gram in used pillows—raising risks of respiratory infections and allergic response.

According to Dr. Sethi, if your pillow is older than one to two years, it could be interfering with both your sleep and respiratory health.

2. Synthetic Air Fresheners
Most artificial air fresheners release undiscussed volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and phthalates. Research shows that 86% of the products tested emitted phthalates—linked to respiratory issues, carcinogenic effects, and hormonal disruptions.

3. Worn Out Mattresses (older than 7–10 years)
As mattresses age, they lose their ability to support your spine properly, leading to sagging and misalignment. This can increase pressure on your back and joints, resulting in chronic pain and lower sleep quality.

By replacing pillows older than one to two years, switching out synthetic air fresheners, and upgrading mattresses older than seven years, you could significantly boost your sleep quality, reduce allergic triggers, and protect your overall well-being

Trump warns of “great consequences” if Russia, Ukraine skip talks

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

Washington DC, August 26: US President Donald Trump on Monday (local time) warned of “great consequences” if Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fail to hold talks, while asserting that the ongoing war would not have occurred under his leadership.

On being asked if there will be consequences if the two leaders do not meet, Trump said, “… There will be great consequences… This war would have never taken place if I were President… We will see what happens over the next week or two, and at that point I will step in very strongly…”

His latest warning follows remarks made last week when Trump said that he would be taking a “very important decision” in the next two weeks on the Russia-Ukraine war, hinting at the possibility of imposing “massive sanctions or tariffs” on Moscow or telling Kyiv that “it’s not Washington’s war.”

Trump said that his decision is dependent on what happens in the next two weeks and pushed for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Speaking to the reporters at the Oval Office, Donald Trump said, “In two weeks, we are going to know which way I am going because I’m going to go one way or another. It’s going to be a very important decision. I’m going to decide whether it’s not massive sanctions or massive tariffs or both, or do we do nothing and say it’s your fight?”

“It takes two to tango. I wanted to have a meeting with those two. We’ll see if they don’t have a meeting, then why it was so, after I told them to have a meeting,” he added.

When asked about a US factory reportedly hit in Ukraine during recent Russian missile attacks, Donald Trump said, “I’m not happy about it, and I’m not happy about anything about that war. I’ve settled seven wars, and if you think about pre-wars, that’ll be three, so 10 wars. Not happy at all. Over the next two weeks we are going to find out which way it’s going to go.”

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Vladimir Putin is ready to meet Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, provided all issues relating to the settlement of the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv are thoroughly worked out.

Lavrov told RT on Thursday, “The Russian president repeatedly said that he is ready to meet, including with Zelensky, if there is an understanding that all issues that require consideration at the highest level have been worked out thoroughly” by experts and ministers.

Thousands turn up to watch day-night cricket match in south Kashmir's Pulwama

Pulwama, Aug 25: Thousands turned up to watch the first-ever day-night cricket match in this south Kashmir district, a spectacle PDP legislator Waheed-ur-Rehman Para hailed as the “start of a new inning” for valley’s youngsters.

The inaugural match of the Royal Premier League is being played at Pulwama Sports Stadium between Royal Goodwill and Sultan Springs Baramulla. In total, 12 teams from across Jammu and Kashmir are participating in the tournament being played under the floodlights.

Calling it a landmark for youth engagement in the region, PDP’s Pulwama MLA Para, who was present among the spectators, described the event as the “start of a new inning” for youngsters in the valley.

“Sports can be a bridge of hope and opportunity. This is more than a match — it is a celebration of aspirations,” he told PTI.

“This is for the first time that a day and night cricket match is being played anywhere in Kashmir, especially in Pulwama. This is the start of a new inning for our youngsters who were earlier hopeless and depressed due to growing unemployment and political uncertainty,” Para said.

Referring to the jam-packed stadium, Para said the record gathering of people from across the valley for this match is a good start.

“This is a youth-led initiative, the organizers, the promoters and the players who have come from different parts of J&K. Our effort is to keep our youngsters away from drugs, pull them out of depression caused by unemployment and political uncertainty and give them new hope through such tournaments,” the PDP leader said.

He said the tournament will reach every district and “we wish the players good luck”.

The organizers said the initiative was aimed at promoting local talent and offering the valley’s youth a platform to showcase their sporting skills in a professional setting.

For many in the crowd, the match was about more than cricket — it was about reclaiming evenings with joy, hope, and togetherness under the floodlights.

Netanyahu says Israel could withdraw from Lebanon if Hezbollah is disarmed

0
Netanyahu defends his planned military offensive in Gaza

Jerusalem, Aug 25: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that Israeli forces could begin withdrawing from territory they hold in southern Lebanon after the Lebanese Cabinet’s “momentous decision” earlier this month to work toward the disarmament of the militant group Hezbollah by the end of 2025.

Netanyahu said if Lebanon takes the necessary steps to disarm Hezbollah, then Israel will respond with reciprocal measures, including a phased reduction of the Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon.

Since the Israel-Hezbollah war ended in November 2024 with a US-brokered ceasefire, Hezbollah officials have said the group will not discuss its disarmament until Israel withdraws from five hills it controls inside Lebanon and stops almost daily airstrikes. Those strikes have killed or wounded hundreds of people, most of them Hezbollah members.

Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri told The Associated Press in response that Israel has an obligation to comply with the ceasefire agreement, “which has not yet happened.”

“Lebanon’s position is clear. Israel must commit to the cessation of hostilities,” Mitri said, referring to Israel’s almost daily airstrikes since the ceasefire went into effect. He added that Israel should also withdraw from Lebanon and release Lebanese prisoners it is holding.

Beirut is under US pressure to disarm the group that recently fought a 14-month war with Israel and was left gravely weakened, with many of its political and military leaders dead.

The announcement comes after a visit to Israel by US envoy Tom Barrack, who has been attempting to solidify the ceasefire and to push Lebanon to move ahead with disarmament of Hezbollah.

During a visit to Lebanon last week, Barrack said the “Lebanese government has done their part” and “now what we need is for Israel to comply with that equal handshake.”

Lebanon needs international support to rebuild after last year’s war, which left large swathes of southern and eastern Lebanon in ruins and caused an estimated USD 11.1 billion in damages, according to the World Bank. International aid is likely to be contingent on Hezbollah disarming.

However, the Lebanese government must move cautiously to avoid an internal explosion of unrest. Naim Kassem, Hezbollah’s secretary-general, has vowed to fight efforts to disarm the group by force, sowing fears of civil conflict in the country.

Hezbollah’s leadership has vowed not to disarm, saying the national government’s decision to remove the Iran-backed group’s weapons by the end of the year serves Israel’s interests.

On Monday, Kassem reiterated the group’s stance of refusing to give up its weapons saying Israel will first have to leave Lebanon, stop its attacks, release Lebanese prisoners and allow Lebanon to start the reconstruction process in areas destroyed during the Israel-Hezbollah war.

“After that, we can discuss a national defence strategy,” Kassem said referring to what could be the future of Hezbollah’s weapons and the possibility of putting it under government control.

“We will not give up the weapons that brought us honour. We will not give up the weapons that defend us against our enemy,” Kassim said in a televised speech. “The weapons are our souls, honour, land, dignity and the future of our children.”

In an apparent warning to the Lebanese government, Kassem said that the decision to disarm Hezbollah came according to dictation by the US and Israel, adding that “whoever wants to remove the weapons means that they want to remove our soul and at that time the world will see our strength.”

Israel has accused Hezbollah of trying to rebuild its military capabilities, and its military has said the five locations in Lebanon provide vantage points or are located across from communities in northern Israel, where about 60,000 Israelis were displaced during the war.

Since the war ended, Hezbollah has withdrawn most of its fighters and weapons from the area along the border with Israel south of the Litani river.

The ceasefire agreement it vague how Hezbollah’s weapons and military facilities north of the Litani river should be treated, saying Lebanese authorities should dismantle unauthorised facilities starting with the area south of the river.

Hezbollah maintains that the deal only covers the area south of the Litani, while Israel and the US say it mandates disarmament of the group throughout Lebanon.

A low-level conflict between Israel and Hezbollah started a day after the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack against Israel from Gaza, when Hezbollah began launching rockets across the border in support of its Palestinian ally. The conflict escalated into war in September 2024 and left more than 4,000 people dead.
