Govt will continue with reforms to make India a developed nation by 2047: PM Modi

Govt will continue with reforms to make India a developed nation by 2047: PM Modi

New Delhi, Aug 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the country will soon become the world’s third-largest major economy and asserted that the government will continue with reforms to make India a developed nation by 2047.

Modi said the next-generation GST reform process will be completed before this Diwali. It will make the GST law simpler and bring down prices.

The Prime Minister asked the private sector to increase investment in research & development in various sectors, including clean energy, quantum technology, battery storage, advanced materials and biotechnology.

Speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum, the Prime Minister said India is the fastest-growing major economy in the world today.

“We are soon going to become the third-largest economy in the world. Experts are saying that India’s contribution to the world’s growth is going to be around 20 per cent very soon,” he noted.

The growth and resilience seen in the Indian economy are due to macroeconomic stability in the last 10 years, Modi said.

On key economic fundamentals, the Prime Minister said India’s fiscal deficit has been reduced to 4.4 per cent despite challenges posed by the COVID pandemic.

Indian companies are raising record funds from capital markets, he pointed out.

Banks are much stronger now, inflation is very low, interest rates are low, and the current account deficit is in control, he asserted, adding that forex reserves are strong.

Every month, the Prime Minister said, lakhs of domestic investors are putting thousands of crores in the capital market through SIPs.

When economic fundamentals are strong, the positive impact could be seen all around, he added.

Modi noted that the latest June EPFO data shows that 22 lakh formal jobs have been added, the highest-ever in a single month.

Retail inflation is at the lowest level since 2017.

“For us, reforms are neither a compulsion nor crisis driven, but a matter of commitment and conviction,” he said.

Modi said the government evaluates and assesses each sector in a holistic manner before undertaking a series of reforms.

The Prime Minister said that during the just concluded Mosnoon session of parliament, the government continued with reforms despite disruptions caused by the Opposition parties.

Paracetamol use during Pregnancy may raise risk of Autism and ADHD in Children: Study

Paracetamol use during Pregnancy may raise risk of Autism and ADHD in Children: Study

Srinagar, Aug 23: A new study suggests that taking acetaminophen—commonly known as paracetamol—during pregnancy may slightly increase the risk of children developing autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Paracetamol is one of the most widely used over-the-counter painkillers around the world. However, its safety during pregnancy has come under growing scrutiny.

Last year, a study conducted by researchers from the University of Nottingham found that paracetamol use was linked to a 24 per cent and 36 per cent increase in risk of peptic ulcer bleeding and lower gastrointestinal bleeding, respectively.

According to the study taking the drug may also increase the risk of chronic kidney disease by 19 per cent, heart failure by nine per cent and hypertension by seven per cent.

Researchers examined when paracetamol was taken during pregnancy—whether in the first, second, third trimester, or throughout—and compared it with medical records of mothers and their children. They found that the risk of autism or ADHD was higher in cases where the drug was used frequently or over longer periods during pregnancy.

The study urged mothers-to-be to use paracetamol, a common over-the-counter medication, sparingly, as it could cause neurodevelopmental disorders.

“Our findings show that higher-quality studies are more likely to show a link between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and increased risks of autism and ADHD,” the study, published earlier this month in BMC Environmental Health, highlighted.

The research, led by experts from Mount Sinai Hospital and Harvard School of Public Health, analyzed data from over 100,000 people across 46 earlier studies. The team used the Navigation Guide Systematic Review, a well-regarded method for reviewing environmental health data.

Given how common paracetamol use is among pregnant women, even a small risk could have significant public health consequences, the researchers warned. They should use it cautiously and only when necessary.

The link between climate change and turbulence

India closes airspace for all Pakistan-operated flights till May 23

Srinagar, Aug 23: For many travelers, air turbulence is more than just an annoyance—it can be a genuine safety concern. And according to scientific findings, the warming planet is making our skies even bumpier.

Why Turbulence Matters

Leading cause of in-flight weather accidents: Turbulence is behind the majority of weather-related incidents aboard planes.

Injuries still happen: From 2009 to 2024, there were 207 reported injuries on U.S. commercial flights, mainly affecting unbelted passengers and crew Phys.org. Notable incidents include an Air Europa flight where 40 were injured and a Singapore Airlines flight that resulted in one death and multiple injuries.

Aircraft remain structurally safe: Experts emphasize the danger lies in occupant injury—not in damage to the plane itself.

Planes encountering severe turbulence—forces around 1.5 times Earth’s gravity—must be inspected afterward. This happens approximately 5,000 times a year over the U.S.  Additionally, turbulence forces pilots to change altitude or route, raising fuel use and costs.

How Climate Change Worsens Turbulence

Clear-Air Turbulence (CAT) is now the biggest concern. Occurring without warning or visible signs, CAT strikes in cloudless skies and is hard to predict.

Warming at cruising altitudes—particularly in the tropics—is driving stronger jet streams and sharper wind shear (sudden changes in wind speed or direction). These shifts create more CAT.

Results are already clear: CAT has increased by 60% to 155% across regions such as the North Atlantic, North America, East Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa.

A 2023 study showed that for each 1 °C rise in surface temperature, moderate CAT in the North Atlantic rises by 9% in winter and 14% in summer, narrowing the typical seasonal difference.

Passenger safety measures: Airlines are encouraging passengers to keep seatbelts fastened during flights and are even ending cabin service earlier during turbulence-prone periods.

Mohamed Foudad, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Reading in the UK, explained there are three main types of turbulence: convective, mountain wave and clear-air turbulence (CAT).

Convective turbulence is linked to rising or sinking air currents from clouds or thunderstorms that can be detected visually or by onboard radar, while mountain wave turbulence occurs over mountain ranges.

A 2023 paper led by Isabel Smith at the University of Reading found that for every degree Celsius of near-surface warming, winters would see an increase of about nine per cent in moderate CAT in the North Atlantic, and summers a rise of 14 per cent.

Jet stream disruption is not the only concern: climate change is also fueling stronger storms. According to the International Air Transport Association Aviation is responsible for about 3.5 per cent of human-caused warming. Airlines are exploring cleaner fuels to help reduce the industry’s footprint, though progress has been “disappointingly slow”.

JKCSF demands reopening of tourist places to safeguard livelihood of tourism dependents

North Kashmir united against ‘unauthorised’ diversion of nallah Ferozpora: JKCSF

Srinagar, Aug 23: Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Forum (JKCSF), under the chairmanship of Abdul Qayoom Wani, has expressed serious concern over the continued closure of tourist destinations following the April 2025 terror attack at Pahalgam Baisaran.

While unequivocally condemning the cowardly act of terror, JKCSF maintains that ordinary people must not be made to suffer endlessly. Since April, thousands of families dependent on tourism—ponywallas, guides, hoteliers, transporters, and local vendors—have lost their livelihood. The prolonged shutdown has brought untold hardship upon them, JKCSF in a statement said.

Chairman JKCSF Abdul Qayoom Wani stated, “The people of Jammu and Kashmir are themselves victims of violence and denying them their bread and butter in the name of security is unjust. Tourism is our economic backbone, and the government must ensure both safety and livelihood together.”

JKCSF strongly urged the administration to: (1) Opening of Yousmarg, Doodh pathri, Tous maidan in district Budgam and Boota pathri and the Drang at Tangmarg and Gulmarg, which remains under unjustified restrictions despite humble requests and protest by effected families and socio political activists, and (2) To facilitate and allow Electric Vehicle (EV) mobility in Tangmarg, Drang and Badrakout areas for creating sustainable tourism opportunities and jobs for local youth.

The forum appealed to the Lieutenant Governor’s administration, Chief Minister, Tourism Department, and district authorities to act without delay and added, “Reopening these destinations will not only restore livelihoods but also revive confidence in Kashmir’s tourism sector”.

Govt temporarily suspends booking of postal services destined for US from Aug 25

Govt temporarily suspends booking of postal services destined for US from Aug 25

New Delhi, Aug 23: The Department of Posts (DoP) on Saturday said it has decided to temporarily suspend booking of all types of postal articles, destined for the US, with effect from August 25.

The suspension, however, exempts letters, documents and gift items up to $100 in value. These exempt categories will continue to be accepted and conveyed to the US, subject to further clarifications from CBP and USPS, the Ministry of Communications said in a statement.

“The Department is closely monitoring the evolving situation in coordination with all stakeholders, and every effort is being made to normalize services at the earliest possible opportunity,” it added.

The Department of Posts has taken note of the Executive Order issued by the US Administration on July 30, 2025, under which the “duty-free de minimis exemption for goods valued up to $800 will be withdrawn with effect from August 29, 2025.

Consequently, all international postal items destined for the US, regardless of their value, shall be subject to customs duties as per the country-specific International Emergency Economic Power Act (IEEPA) tariff framework.

However, gift items up to the value of $100 will continue to remain exempt from duties.

As per the Executive Order, transport carriers delivering shipments through the international postal network, or other “qualified parties” approved by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), are required to collect and remit duties on postal shipments.

While CBP issued certain guidelines on August 15, 2025, several critical processes relating to the designation of “qualified parties” and mechanisms for duty collection and remittance remain undefined.

Consequently, US-bound air carriers have expressed their inability to accept postal consignments after August 25, 2025, citing lack of operational and technical readiness.

“Customers who have already booked articles that cannot be dispatched to the US due to these circumstances may seek a refund of postage. The Department of Posts deeply regrets the inconvenience caused to customers and assures that all possible measures are being undertaken to resume full services to the US at the earliest,” said the Ministry.
