Chinese bridge collapse kills at least 12 construction workers

Beijing, Aug 23: The collapse of an under-construction railway bridge over a major river in China has killed at least 12 workers and left four others missing, state media reports said.

Aerial photos from the official Xinhua News Agency show a large section missing from the bridge’s curved aquamarine arch. A bent section of the bridge deck hangs downward into the Yellow River below.

Sixteen workers were on the bridge in northwest China’s Qinghai province when a steel cable snapped about 3 am. Friday during a tensioning operation, Xinhua said. Boats, a helicopter and robots were being used in the search for the missing.

The bridge is 1.6 kilometres long and its deck is 55 metres above the surface of the river below, the English-language China Daily newspaper said.

Altaf Bukhari slams J&K govt for takeover of 215 FAT schools, calls move “unjustified”

Altaf Bukhari slams J&K govt for takeover of 215 FAT schools, calls move “unjustified”

Srinagar, Aug 23: Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari on Saturday slammed the Jammu and Kashmir government for taking over the management of 215 Falah-e-Aam Trust (FAT) schools, calling it “neither necessary nor justified.”

In a statement, Bukhari said that although Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) was banned in 2019, the administration under the Lieutenant Governor had refrained from taking direct control of FAT institutions. “Yet, the elected government, despite enjoying a strong public mandate, has chosen to do so,” he said.

Bukhari argued that instead of enforcing a ban through takeover, the government could have established a regulatory mechanism to ensure compliance with laws while safeguarding the academic future of thousands of students. “By imposing a ban on these schools, the government has done a disservice to the education sector and the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he remarked.

He acknowledged that one may have political or ideological differences with Jamaat-e-Islami, but said FAT schools have played a commendable role in the education sector for decades. The latest move, according to him, reflects “intolerance toward those with whom the ruling party has political or ideological differences.”

Recalling history, Bukhari pointed out that FAT schools were first banned in 1990 when the late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was Union Home Minister. At that time, the courts stayed the ban and allowed the schools to continue. In 2019, another ban was announced, and six years later, the present National Conference (NC) government has acted to enforce it.

“As an elected government with a strong mandate, it is its responsibility to respect public sentiment in this matter. It should immediately revoke the decision and instead create a regulatory authority to monitor FAT schools, ensuring they comply with all relevant laws and regulations,” Bukhari said.

40% of chief ministers face criminal cases: ADR report

New Delhi, Aug 22: Of the 30 chief ministers in the country, 12 of them, or 40 per cent, declared criminal cases against themselves, according to a new report by poll rights body ADR.

Telangana CM Revanth Reddy has declared 89 cases against him, the highest, followed by Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin, who declared 47.

Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu declared 19, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah declared 13, and Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren declared five cases.

Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh chief ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Sukhvinder Singh declared four cases each, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan declared two, and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann declared one case.

The report comes as the government brings three bills that seek the removal of the prime minister, chief ministers, and ministers arrested for 30 days on serious criminal charges.

According to the report by the Association for Democratic Reforms, 10, or 33 per cent, of the chief ministers have declared serious criminal cases, including cases related to attempt to murder, kidnapping, bribery, and criminal intimidation against them.

The ADR said it analysed the self-sworn affidavits of all 30 sitting chief ministers in state Assemblies and Union Territories.

This data is from affidavits they filed prior to contesting their last elections.

Experts reveal 9 key beverage insights

Experts recommend 10 morning things to help control blood sugar and curb cravings

Srinagar, Aug 23: Our everyday drinks play essential roles in our overall wellbeing. Experts at AIIMS, Harvard and Stanford, shared valuable insights on which drink is good for everyday consumption, and which should be avoided.

“I’m a gut doctor. And here are 9 things I refuse to gatekeep about everyday drinks,” wrote Dr Saurabh Sethi, board-certified gastroenterologist, hepatologist, and interventional endoscopist trained at AIIMS on Instagram. Here are 9 things that he suggested:

1. Warm water > ice cold
Cold drinks can slow digestion temporarily. Start your day with warm or room temp water to support gut motility.

2. Coffee is a gut stimulant
Use it wisely. It helps with bowel movements and focus. But too much (especially on an empty stomach) can cause reflux, urgency, and anxiety.

3. Green tea is underrated
It’s anti-inflammatory, supports metabolism, and balances gut bacteria. Plus, L-theanine keeps your brain calm while caffeine keeps it alert.

4. Skip the juice, eat the fruit
Juices can lead to sugar spike with no fiber. Whole fruits are loaded with fibre and antioxidants that your gut microbes actually use.

5. Kombucha isn’t always a health drink
Some brands are packed with sugar. Look for ones with <5g sugar per serving or go for plain kefir or yogurt drinks.

6. Herbal teas are functional medicine
Turmeric, ginger, and fennel aren’t just cozy. They reduce bloat, ease inflammation, and support gut lining repair.

7. Chia or basil seed drinks support digestion
They absorb water, form a gut-friendly gel, and feed your good bacteria. Great for regularity and fiber on the go.

8. Alcohol damages your gut
Even small amounts disrupt gut bacteria, increase permeability (leaky gut), and mess with sleep. Hydrate well and limit intake if you drink.

9. Leafy herbs are small but mighty for gut health
Mint, cilantro, parsley, and basil contain polyphenols that support digestion and feed good bacteria. Raw herbs are more nutritious than when cooked.

Opposition parties react sharply to J-K govt’s takeover of JeI-linked schools

Opposition parties react sharply to J-K govt's takeover of JeI-linked schools

Srinagar, Aug 23: Political parties in Kashmir on Saturday reacted sharply to the J&K government’s takeover of the management of the 215 schools affiliated with the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI).

Peoples’ Conference chief and MLA Handwara Sajad Lone said, “Shame and shamelessness have assumed new meanings in this government.”

“215 schools forcibly taken over by the J and K Government. And no prizes for guessing. The elected government has passed the order. Shame and shamelessness have assumed new meanings in this government.

“They are setting new standards in servility. And just to recall the sermons the edicts that this party passed against their opponents,” Lone said in a post on X.

He asked the people to be “under no illusions” as the elected government “is a party to all acts undertaken”.

“Be it mailings or termination of employees, they are equal partners. They have been equal partners in the past. And they will be equal partners in the future. This is the A team. This was always the A team,” Lone said, referring to the name-calling of his party by the National Conference (NC) during the assembly elections.

Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti said JeI has always been the first target of the NC when in power.

“Throughout Kashmir’s history every time the National Conference got a brute majority their first target has always been the Jamaat. Be it 1977 or even today where they have taken it too far by jeopardising the future of thousands of students leaving them in distress,” Mufti said on X.

Referring to the clarification by Education Minister Sakina Itoo that the original order did not mention takeover by deputy commissioners but said that the principals of the nearest higher secondary schools would look after them, the PDP leader stated the “hazy illogical U-turn” from the minister “only exacerbates the crisis.”

“Why not admit what has been their official policy of punishing & outlawing the Jamaat since decades?” she asked.

Another PDP leader, Waheed Para said one of the major successes of the Centre post-abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 was integrating JeI into the electoral process.

“This milestone, which could not be achieved through arrests or encounters, was realised during the 2024 elections when the Ameer of Jamaat and JeI members actively fielded candidates.

“This marked a significant step toward transforming and reintegrating a segment of the population that had been exploited by anti-India groups due to decades-long hostility stemming from 1987 onward,” the Pulwama MLA said on X.

“What force could not accomplish, the democratic process and participation successfully achieved,” he said.

However, he said the recent moves like book bans and school takeovers appear to be “knee-jerk reactions” rather than well-thought-out strategies.

“These actions suppress JeI-aligned individuals and close doors for those seeking to emerge from the turmoil of the past two decades. The GOI must provide space, uphold constitutional guarantees, and foster the democratic process in Jammu and Kashmir — the only weapon yet to be fully tested in this region,” Para added.

CBI books Anil Ambani’s RCOM for Rs 2,000-cr bank fraud, searches premises

CBI books Anil Ambani's RCOM for Rs 2,000-cr bank fraud, searches premises

New Delhi, Aug 23: The CBI has filed a case against Reliance Communications and its promoter director Anil Ambani, for an alleged bank fraud that caused a loss of over Rs 2,000 crore to State Bank of India, officials said on Saturday.

The agency is carrying out searches at the residence of Anil Ambani and premises linked to RCOM in connection with the case, they said.

The CBI took the action based on a complaint from the lender State Bank of India, which had approached the agency after the entities were classified as fraud on June 13, in accordance with the RBI’s Master Directions on Fraud Risk Management and the Bank’s Board-approved Policy on Classification, Reporting & Management of Frauds.

“On June 24, 2025, the bank reported classification of fraud to RBI, and is also in the process of lodging complaint with CBI,” Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary had said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha last month.

The credit exposure of SBI in RCom includes, fund-based principal outstanding amount of Rs 2,227.64 crore along with the accrued interest and expenses with effect from August 26, 2016, and a non-fund-based Bank Guarantee of Rs 786.52 crore, he had said.

RCom is undergoing the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016.

The resolution plan was approved by the Committee of Creditors and filed with the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), Mumbai, on March 6, 2020.

The NCLT approval is awaited.

The bank has also initiated a Personal Insolvency Resolution Process under IBC against Anil D Ambani, and it is being heard by NCLT, Mumbai, he had said.

The SBI had classified the account and promoter Anil D Ambani as ‘fraud’ on November 10, 2020 and filed a complaint with the CBI on January 5, 2021.

However, the minister said, the complaint was returned in view of the ‘status quo’ order dated January 6, 2021, by the Delhi High Court.

Meanwhile, a Supreme Court judgement dated March 27, 2023, in State Bank of India & Others Vs Rajesh Agarwal & Others case mandated that lenders provide borrowers with an opportunity to represent before classifying their accounts as fraud.

Accordingly, the minister said, the fraud classification in the account was reversed by the bank on September 2, 2023.

The fraud classification process was re-run, and the account was again classified as ‘fraud’ after following the due process as per the RBI circular dated July 15, 2024.

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 23: India is all set to witness football history this November, as global icon Lionel Messi and the reigning FIFA World Cup champions Argentina are scheduled to arrive in Kerala for a friendly match.

Taking to his social media account Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman said the official confirmation came through an email communication from the Argentine Football Association (AFA), confirming that the World Cup-winning squad will participate in an international fixture in Kerala during the FIFA International Match Window of November 2025.

This marks the first-ever visit of Lionel Messi and his World Cup-winning teammates to India, and the announcement has already sparked excitement among football fans across the country, particularly in football-loving Kerala.

The state, which has long celebrated the magic of South American football, is preparing for what many are calling a “dream come true” moment.

The Kerala Football Association (KFA), in collaboration with the All India Football Federation (AIFF), is working out the final logistics, including the choice of venue.

Preliminary discussions suggest that the match could take place at the Greenfield Stadium in the state capital city.

The upcoming fixture will be part of Argentina’s preparation schedule ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Lionel Messi, who led Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar 2022, is expected to captain the side, though formal confirmation on the squad list will be announced closer to the date.

The state government is also expected to extend full support to ensure smooth arrangements for security, crowd management, and hospitality.

Tourism officials believe that Lionel Messi’s arrival could provide a major boost to Kerala’s international profile, attracting fans and visitors from across the country and the globe.

For generations of Indian football lovers, particularly in Kerala, who have passionately followed Argentina since the days of Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi’s presence on the nation’s soil will be nothing short of historic.

Incidentally for the past several weeks Sports Minister Abdurahiman had come under severe attack especially from the Congress party in Kerala and its state party president and senior MLA Sunny Joseph who came out with a hash tag, ‘Messi is missing’.

A student’s guide to spotting and avoiding scam universities

0
A student’s guide to spotting and avoiding scam universities

Srinagar, Aug 23: Fake universities are a serious and growing concern for students pursuing higher education after Class 12. These unauthorized institutions offer degrees that are not recognized by India’s higher education authorities, leaving students with worthless qualifications and uncertain futures.

To protect themselves, students must verify the authenticity of any university before applying. The University Grants Commission (UGC)—India’s higher education regulator—regularly updates a list of fake universities on its official website: ugc.gov.in. Checking this list is a crucial step in the admission process.

Common red flags of fake universities include:

  • Offering courses with unusually short durations.
  • Charging very low fees while promising guaranteed placements.
  • Having poorly detailed websites with limited information about faculty or programs.

Legitimate universities in India must be recognized by the UGC, and in some cases, also by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Only institutions established under a Central, State, or Provincial Act, or those empowered by the UGC Act of 1956, are legally authorized to award degree.

In March 2025, UGC issued a circular listing fake universities across several states, including Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
