Aadhaar can be used to re-enter electoral roll during Bihar revision: Supreme Court

SC to hear on July 24 Maharashtra govt’s plea against Bombay HC verdict SC-Train blast

New Delhi, Aug 22: The Supreme Court on Friday said that voters excluded from the draft electoral roll in Bihar’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) can use Aadhaar as proof to file objections against their deletion.

According to a report by Bar and Bench, a Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi clarified that people may submit their objections with “any of the 11 documents listed in Form 6 by the Election Commission of India (ECI) or Aadhaar card.”

The Court further directed that objections can also be filed online without the need for physical submission. Where forms are filed in person, booth-level officers must issue acknowledgement receipts. The Court also urged political parties to actively help citizens who were left out of the draft roll, expressing concern that only two objections had been received from Booth Level Agents (BLAs) so far. The matter arose from petitions, including one filed by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), challenging the ECI’s June 24 directive to conduct an SIR of electoral rolls before the Bihar assembly elections. Petitioners argued that the revision risks disenfranchising lakhs of citizens and undermining free and fair elections.

The ECI, however, defended its powers under Article 324 of the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act, 1950. On August 6, it was revealed that around 65 lakh names had been dropped from the draft roll. The Commission assured the Court that no name would be removed without prior notice, a hearing, and a reasoned order. Earlier, on August 14, the Court had directed the ECI to publish the list of voters proposed to be deleted, a step which, it was informed today, has been complied with.

Bring facts about ‘rotten meat scandal’ in Kashmir in public domain: Mirwaiz

MMU calls for shutdown against tourist killings in Pahalgam tomorrow

Srinagar, Aug 22: Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday called for bringing facts about the “rotten meat scandal” in Kashmir in the public domain to address people’s concern and anxiety.

Addressing the Friday congregation at the Jamia Masjid here, the Mirwaiz expressed deep concern over the rotten meat scandal that shook people’s trust and created widespread anxiety for the past more than two weeks.

The authorities recently conducted raids at multiple locations as part of a crackdown on rotten and adulterated meat in the Kashmir valley, targeting vendors suspected of selling unhygienic and expired meat products.

During the operations, substantial quantities of rotten meat were seized and destroyed on the spot under the relevant sections of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

The Mirwaiz said that despite assurances in media by the authorities regarding a thorough investigation into the matter, “not much is known about its follow up – who are the people behind it, for how long has it been going on, or have any arrests been made”.

“All this needs to be put in the public domain to address people’s concern and anxiety on this matter,” he said.

He said once that is done, it is imperative that a foolproof mechanism is put in place to ensure such incidents never recur.

“There should be no leniency whatsoever with those involved in this heinous act that puts people’s health and lives at grave risk,” he said.

The Mirwaiz stressed that Kashmir needs its own regulated slaughterhouses where proper hygiene, Islamic guidelines, and food safety measures are strictly observed.

Both the government and the business community must gear up to establish these facilities, as people cannot blindly trust what comes from outside without scrutiny, he said.

The Mirwaiz also said that the Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU) — the amalgam of several religious bodies — at its meeting on Thursday constituted a seven-member committee comprising jurists from all schools of thought to deliberate on the issue.

The MMU already has a Halal Certification Board, which will now be expanded and strengthened to ensure compliance with Islamic standards, he said.

“The MMU is fully willing to cooperate with the government in this matter to preserve the Islamic character of halal food and to safeguard the health and trust of our people,” the Mirwaiz said.

Israel’s defence minister says Gaza City could be destroyed

Israel's defence minister says Gaza City could be destroyed

Deir Al-Balah, Aug 22: Israel’s defence minister warned on Friday that Gaza City could be destroyed unless Hamas accepts Israel’s terms, as the country prepares for an expanded offensive in the area.

A day after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would authorise the military to mount a major operation to seize Gaza City, Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that the enclave’s largest city could “turn into Rafah and Beit Hanoun,” areas reduced to rubble earlier in the war.

“The gates of hell will soon open on the heads of Hamas’ murderers and rapists in Gaza — until they agree to Israel’s conditions for ending the war,” Katz wrote in a post on X.

He restated Israel’s cease-fire demands: the release of all hostages and Hamas’ complete disarmament. Hamas has said it would release captives in exchange for ending the war, but rejects disarmament without the creation of a Palestinian state.

The wide-scale operation in Gaza City could start within days.

Gaza City is Hamas’ military and governing stronghold, atop of what Israel believes is an extensive tunnel network. It is also sheltering hundreds of thousands of civilians and still houses some of the strip’s critical infrastructure and health facilities.

Hamas said earlier this week that it had agreed to a ceasefire proposal from Arab mediators, which — if accepted by Israel — could forestall the offensive.

The parties do not negotiate directly and similar announcements have been made in the past that did not lead to ceasefires.

The proposal outlines a phased deal involving hostage and prisoner exchanges and a pullback of Israeli troops, while talks continue on a longer-term cease-fire. Israeli leaders have resisted such terms since abandoning a similar agreement earlier this year amid divisions within Netanyahu’s coalition and strong opposition from his right.

Many Israelis fear an assault could doom the roughly 20 hostages still alive after Hamas-led militants’ October 7, 2023 attack. Aid groups and international leaders warn it would worsen Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.

The logistics of evacuating civilians are expected to be daunting. Many residents say repeated displacement is pointless since nowhere in Gaza is safe, while medical groups warn Israel’s calls to move patients south is unworkable, with no facilities to receive them.

But Netanyahu has argued the offensive is the surest way to free captives and crush Hamas.

“These two things — defeating Hamas and releasing all our hostages — go hand in hand,” Netanyahu said on Thursday while touring a command centre near in southern Israel.

Army Chief, AWWA President pledge organ donation to support AORTA initiative

Srinagar, Aug 22: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi and his wife, Mrs. Sunita Dwivedi, President of the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), have pledged to donate their organs, giving a major boost to the Armed Forces Organ Retrieval and Transplantation Authority (AORTA).

The initiative, led by Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, seeks to raise awareness about organ donation and encourage the Armed Forces community to lead by example.

According to officials, more than 26,000 Army personnel have already pledged their organs as part of the campaign, setting a national record.

The pledge was made on August 20 at Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi

Calling organ donation a “service to humanity” and an extension of the Armed Forces’ spirit of sacrifice, General Dwivedi urged service members and their families to come forward in support of the cause. He also praised AORTA for its efforts in spreading awareness and motivating personnel to participate in the initiative.

During the event, the Army Chief presented Chief’s Recommendation Cards to three frontline staff working in organ transplant care, including a housekeeper, in recognition of their contribution to patient well-being. Donor families were also honoured in a ceremony for their compassion in extending “the gift of life” through organ donation.
