Palestinians flee Gaza City as Israel prepares ground offensive

New Delhi, Aug 21: Thousands of Palestinians are fleeing neighbourhoods in Gaza City as Israeli forces begin the first phase of a ground offensive aimed at seizing the entire city, home to more than a million people, reports BBC and international media. Israeli troops have moved into the outskirts, including Zeitoun and Jabalia, after days of heavy bombardment. Defence Minister Israel Katz has approved the operation, with 60,000 reservists to be called up in September, reports BBC. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was “shortening the timelines” to capture what he called Hamas’s “last strongholds.”

The escalation has drawn sharp international criticism. UN Secretary General António Guterres renewed calls for an immediate ceasefire, while the Red Cross warned that further displacement and hostilities could “worsen an already catastrophic situation” for Gaza’s 2.1 million people.

French President Emmanuel Macron cautioned that Israel’s plan “can only lead to disaster for both peoples.” Hamas accused Israel of waging a “brutal war against innocent civilians” and ignoring a new ceasefire proposal from mediators Qatar and Egypt, who have suggested a 60-day truce and a partial hostage release. Israel has yet to respond formally, saying it seeks a comprehensive deal, reports BBC. The UN estimates evacuation orders now cover 86% of Gaza. Humanitarian agencies warn that continued offensives risk deepening the crisis for civilians and the roughly 50 hostages still held by Hamas.

The Chief Minister, while addressing officers, stressed the need for speedy relief assistance, restoration of essential services, and long-term strategies to safeguard vulnerable areas from recurring natural calamities.

“Whether it was a cloudburst or a glacial lake outburst, the fact remains that this tragedy struck at the busiest time of the year in the Chashoti village. Had it occurred at any other time, the impact might have been less severe. These are lessons we must take forward. The Meteorological Department had issued warnings, including advisories against unnecessary travel, which underscores the importance of adopting clear SOPs and guidelines for highly vulnerable regions,” the Chief Minister observed.

Our priority now is to retrieve dead bodies to hand them over to their families. Equally important is to rehabilitate those whose homes and livelihoods have been devastated.”

He assured all possible government support in reconstruction of damaged homes, restoration of agricultural land, and provision of essential services.

He directed the concerned departments to work out temporary arrangements, including deployment of generators, to ensure electricity supply in affected areas until road connectivity is fully restored.

He further reported that Army, Police, NDRF, SDRF, and civil administration are jointly engaged in rescue and relief operations with heavy machinery deployed on the ground.

Deputy Commissioner Kathua informed the meeting that seven persons lost their lives and 13 sustained injuries, with around five areas severely affected. Immediate relief was distributed to the victims, NGOs were roped in, and temporary shelters established. Gold climbs Rs 1,400 to Rs 96,450 per 10 g; silver jumps Rs 1,000

New Delhi, Aug 21: Gold prices climbed Rs 600 to Rs 1,00,620 per 10 grams in the national capital on Thursday amid fresh buying by stockists, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

The yellow metal of 99.9 per cent purity had settled at Rs 1,00,020 per 10 grams on Wednesday.

In the national capital, gold of 99.5 per cent purity jumped Rs 500 to Rs 1,00,200 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Thursday. The precious metal had closed at Rs 99,700 per 10 grams in the previous session.

“Gold prices rose on Thursday, driven by safe haven demand and bargain buying after the price fell to a three-week low in the previous session.

“The renewed demand for safe haven was spurred by President Donald Trump’s call for the resignation of a Federal Reserve governor, which raised concerns about the central bank’s independence,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

Following this comment, the US Dollar retreated from its recent high, further supporting gold prices, Gandhi added.

In addition, silver prices surged by Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,14,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Thursday. It had finished at Rs 1,12,500 per kg on Wednesday, according to the association.

“Gold is holding steady near USD 3,340 per ounce as investors await key US macroeconomic data, including jobless claims, PMIs, and existing home sales.

“However, the main focus remains on Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium as investors are watching closely for signs of a monetary policy shift, particularly after last year’s remarks signalled the start of a rate-cutting cycle,” Kaynat Chainwala, AVP Commodity Research, Kotak Securities, said.

Meanwhile, minutes from the US Federal Reserve’s July meeting revealed that officials remain cautious about inflation and the labour market, with most considering it too soon to cut interest rates.

Spot silver also went down by 0.32 per cent to USD 37.78 per ounce.

Crime Branch organises UT level conference on anti-human trafficking

Crime Branch organises UT level conference on anti-human trafficking

Srinagar, Aug 21: The Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police today organised a Union Territory level conference on anti-human trafficking in collaboration with Union Ministry of Home Affairs and Academy of Art Culture and Languages at Tagore Hall Srinagar.

The conference was attended by the senior police officials, government representatives, experts, NGO’s, legal experts and stakeholders to deliberate on strategies, challenges and collaborative measures to combat human trafficking.

Special DG Coordination PHQ, S.J.M. Gillani, who was the chief guest on the occasion, dwelled on the legal framework, network, prosecution and other critical areas concerning trafficking. He said that human trafficking intersects with other forms of exploitation because traffickers often use the same smuggling networks as those for drugs and arms. “What sets trafficking in persons apart is the human cost shattered lives, broken families and the long-lasting trauma inflicted on victims,” he noted. He stressed that the fight against this crime requires not just enforcement but also empathy and rehabilitation. However, he noted that conviction rates remain low, a trend that mirrors global challenges rooted in weak enforcement, procedural delays and corruption.

Gillani emphasized that prevention must be at the center of anti-trafficking strategies, particularly in border and conflict regions. “Educated, economically secure and rights-aware communities are less vulnerable to exploitation,” he said.

Highlighting the role of technology, he said advanced surveillance and data-driven interventions could strengthen the response to trafficking. “We all know, laws alone are not enough. It is the spirit of their implementation, the empathy of our enforcers and the awareness of our citizens that will truly turn the tide,” he emphasized.

He urged that the challenge must be approached not only with the rigor of officers but also with the compassion of human beings. “Together, through coordinated enforcement, community partnership and a holistic focus on human security, we can make a lasting difference,” he added.

He commended the Crime Branch of the J&K Police, the Ministry of Home Affairs, various NGOs and all other stakeholders who made the event possible.

“Their commitment aligns with the Government of India’s comprehensive initiatives, such as the Trafficking in Persons (Prevention, Protection and Rehabilitation) Bill, the strengthening of Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs) across states and programs like Operation Muskan,” he said.

Additional Director General of Police & Director Fire & Emergency Services, Alok Kumar in his address underlined that human trafficking is closely linked to the worldwide phenomenon of black money. He observed that despite strong laws and international conventions, the crime continues to increase.

Stressing that combating trafficking must be a continuous process, he emphasized the importance of leveraging social media as a tool for awareness, involving local communities and sensitising people about the strategies traffickers use. He also highlighted the need for deterrence through exemplary punishment to discourage offenders.

Convenor, Just Rights for Children, Ravi Kant in his speech highlighted that traffickers often exploit gaps in the enforcement chain. He pointing out that while the Government of India is strengthening legal frameworks, the scale and networks involved make it difficult to arrest and prosecute high-level traffickers.

Ravi Kant called for a comprehensive approach that not only tightens laws but also ensures effective enforcement, stronger victim protection measures and collaboration between police, civil society, and international agencies.

He noted that Anti-Human Trafficking Units and law enforcement agencies already have the necessary powers and relevant laws to act effectively. “If we look beneath the surface, we see that trafficking is highly organised — but so too is the fight against it,” he said, commending the work being done by the Jammu & Kashmir Police in tackling this grave crime.

Resource person Rajesh Mani, a noted expert trainer (Human trafficking) shared his expertise on prevention, victim support and coordinated response mechanisms.

During his presentation, he said that human trafficking is a heinous and organised crime and highlighted best practices, challenges and the need for a multi-agency approach in effectively addressing human trafficking.

Earlier, IGP Crime Sujit Kumar in his welcome address said that we have to come together in this noble mission to fight human trafficking and urged upon the youth to benefit from the knowledge and awareness shared during the conference.

No bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan, but cricket team for Asia Cup won't be stopped: Sports Ministry

New Delhi, Aug 21: India and Pakistan won’t engage in any bilateral sporting clash but the cricket team will not be stopped from playing the multi-lateral Asia Cup next month, the Sports Ministry said on Thursday.

The ministry unveiled the new policy with regard to India’s international engagements with emphasis on Pakistan. Sources said it is effective immediately.

“India’s approach to sports events involving Pakistan reflects its overall policy in dealing with that country,” states the ministry policy.

“In so far as bilateral sports events in each other’s country are concerned, Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan. Nor will we permit Pakistani teams to play in India,” it added.

However, the multilateral engagements will not be affected.

“We will not stop Indian cricket team from playing in Asia Cup as it is multilateral,” the ministry source said.

“But Pakistan will not be allowed on Indian soil for bilateral competitions. But we will not stop them from multilateral events as we will abide by Olympic Charter,” he added.

Asked if Indian teams will be allowed to travel to Pakistan for any multi-lateral competitions, the source said, “In that scenario, we will examine the case before deciding anything.”

“Even in multi-lateral events, we can’t leave our athletes in lurch. After all it’s a country that has no hesitation in declaring that its a dumpster and can hit the shining Mercedes that is India,” he added.
