Congress launches hunger strike in Srinagar demanding restoration of J&K statehood

Srinagar, Aug 09: The Jammu and Kashmir Congress leader on Saturday sat a hunger strike here to press for the restoration of the Union territory’s statehood.

The strike was launched by Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Karra at the party’s head office at M A Road here.

Karra and other senior leaders of the party, including AICC general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir and party MLAs, joined the hunger strike.

A similar hunger strike will be observed in Jammu on Sunday.

The hunger strike is part of the party’s campaign ‘hamari riyasat, hamara haq’ to press for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, which was downgraded and bifurcated into two Union territories – J-K and Ladakh – on August 5, 2019, by the Centre.

The Centre also abrogated Articles 370 and 35A that day.

Speaking to reporters, Karra said the party has launched a “struggle to awaken the blind, deaf and dumb government in Delhi”.

“We selected this day as it is the day when the ‘Quit India Movement’ was launched. From August 9 to 21, the party will observe six hunger strikes across various districts of J-K,” he said.

The JKPCC president said the peaceful hunger strike has been launched for the wishes and aspirations of the 1.40 crore citizens of J-K.

He said that as the Parliament session is going on, the party would wait for any development related to the restoration of J-K’s statehood.

“If there is no development, then on August 21 (when the session ends), a new programme will be given,” he added.

Major boost for Kashmir's transport infrastructure as maiden freight train reaches Anantnag

Srinagar, August 09: The first loaded freight train rolled into Anantnag Railway Station on Saturday, marking a major milestone in the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, specifically with the operational start of the Banihal-Sangaldan-Reasi-Katra segment. This development is set to significantly boost Jammu and Kashmir’s transport infrastructure.

This historical development effectively brings the Kashmir rail network into the larger Indian Railways freight corridor, ensuring the ease of movement of goods from anywhere in the country directly into the valley.

The 272-kilometre-long Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, now nearing full commissioning, spans Udhampur, Reasi, Ramban, Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Budgam, and Baramulla districts in Jammu and Kashmir.

A landmark in engineering, the project includes the world’s tallest railway bridge over the Chenab River in Reasi district, standing 359 metres above the riverbed and stretching 1,315 metres in length. It also features India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge across Anji Khad, with its deck positioned 331 metres above the riverbed.

This new connectivity will effectively give the region’s economy a major fillip through opening of new trade routes, lowering logistics costs for companies, assuring delivery of essential commodities throughout the year irrespective of weather, and consolidating regional connections into the national rail system.

Beyond its engineering feats, the USBRL has delivered substantial socio-economic benefits, generating over 5 crore man-days of employment and enabling the construction of more than 215 kilometres of approach roads, along with 320 small bridges and several tunnels. This infrastructure has significantly improved local connectivity and uplifted community livelihoods.

Safety remains a top priority, with the project adhering to global standards. Tunnels exceeding two kilometres are equipped with mechanical air ventilation and firefighting systems, while principal tunnels over three kilometres have dedicated escape tunnels totalling 66 kilometres.

Meanwhile, in light of ongoing rainfall, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in landslide-prone areas, as emergency services remain on standby for quick restoration efforts.

Over 100 flights delayed due to heavy rain in Delhi

Jammu Airport records 1.61 mn passengers in 2024-25; 188 weekly aircraft movements’

New Delhi, Aug 09: The national Capital woke up to torrential rain on Saturday, causing widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls, and flight disruptions, marring the festive mood of Raksha Bandhan. According to Flightradar data, at least 105 flights were delayed due to the inclement weather.

Of the delayed flights, 13 were inbound to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) and 92 were outbound, throwing travel schedules into chaos.

Though there were no mass cancellations, airlines and airport authorities issued advisories to caution flyers amid traffic congestion and rain-related delays.

IndiGo and SpiceJet both posted alerts on X, urging passengers to leave early for the airport and keep track of their flight status.

Meanwhile, Delhi Airport issued a statement clarifying that operations were largely stable despite the weather.

“As per the Indian Meteorological Department’s forecast, Delhi is experiencing inclement weather conditions. However, all flight operations at Delhi Airport are currently normal. Our on-ground teams are working diligently with all stakeholders to ensure your journey remains hassle-free,” it posted on X.

Rain battered several key areas of the city including Panchkuian Marg, Connaught Place, and Mathura Road, leading to serious waterlogging and gridlocked roads. Commuters faced long delays as several underpasses and arterial roads were inundated.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for the entire Delhi region, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall with the possibility of intense thunderstorms, particularly over East and Central Delhi throughout the day.

While the rain brought a temporary relief from heat and improved air quality, the disruption to daily life and holiday plans was widespread, with many residents taking to social media to share visuals of submerged streets and delayed journeys.

UN chief Guterres “gravely alarmed” by Israeli decision to “take control of Gaza City”

UN chief calls for ceasefire in Gaza

New York, August 09: The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is “gravely alarmed by the decision of the Israeli Government to ‘take control of Gaza City’.”

He said this decision “marks a dangerous escalation and risks deepening the already catastrophic consequences for millions of Palestinians, and could further endanger more lives, including of the remaining hostages.”

The Secretary-General highlighted that Palestinians in Gaza continue to endure “a humanitarian catastrophe of horrific proportions.” He warned that “this further escalation will result in additional forced displacement, killings and massive destruction, compounding the unimaginable suffering of the Palestinian population in Gaza.”

He reiterated his urgent appeal for “a permanent ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian access across Gaza, and for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”

The Secretary-General once again “strongly urges the Government of Israel to abide by its obligations under international law.” He recalled that the International Court of Justice, in its Advisory Opinion of 19 July 2024, declared, inter alia, that the State of Israel is under an obligation to “cease immediately all new settlement activities, and to evacuate all settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and to bring to an end its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory – which encompasses Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem – as rapidly as possible.”

He further stressed, “There will be no sustainable solution to this conflict without an end to this unlawful occupation and the achievement of a viable two-State solution. Gaza is and must remain an integral part of a Palestinian State.”

However, in a significant development, Israel’s security cabinet on Friday approved a plan from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to occupy Gaza City, the Prime Minister’s Office said, as reported by The Times of Israel.

As per The Times of Israel, Israel will provide humanitarian aid to the civilian population outside of combat zones, the PMO said in a statement on what it says was the decision by the cabinet to back Netanyahu’s “proposal to defeat Hamas.”

The Israeli cabinet approved a list of five principles to abide by in exchange for ending the conflict.
As per the Times of Israel, the principles are- the disarmament of Hamas, the return of all 50 remaining hostages, 20 of whom are believed to be alive, the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, Israeli security control over the Gaza Strip, the existence of an alternative civilian government that is not Hamas or the Palestinian Authority.

An overwhelming majority of ministers determined that the alternative plan presented to the security cabinet would not have secured the defeat of Hamas or the return of the hostages, the PMO said.

The statement doesn’t elaborate on the aforementioned alternative plan, but it appears to be referring to a proposal presented by IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, who has expressed his opposition to occupying the Gaza Strip, fearing it will lead to a humanitarian disaster, while risking the lives of the hostages.

It’s unclear why the statement only refers to conquering Gaza City and not the occupation of the entirety of the Gaza Strip, as Netanyahu declared on Thursday was his plan, as per The Times of Israel.

Gaza City is part of the 25 per cent of the Strip that the IDF has yet to conquer, along with several refugee camps in central Gaza.

It’s unclear whether those other unconquered areas outside of Gaza City will also be taken over, as part of the plan authorized by the security cabinet.
