NIA gets 10-day custody of Delhi suicide bomber’s ‘key aide’ Jasir Bilal

Srinagar, Nov 17: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday was granted a 10-custody of the Delhi blast suicide bomber’s alleged aide, Jasir Bilal Wani by the special anti-terror agency court in Delhi.

According to details, Jasir alias Danish was produced in the Patiala House Court in Delhi by the Anti-Terror Agency today afternoon. Jasir, a resident of Qazigund in Jammu and Kashmir, was arrested by the NIA on Monday in the Delhi blast case.

The court granted 10-day custody of Jasir to the Anti-Terror Agency. At least 15 people were killed and several others were injured after a high-intensity blast ripped through a car near Delhi’s historic Red Fort last week.

On Sunday, the NIA said it made the first breakthrough in the Delhi blast case by arresting the suicide bomber’s key aide – Amir Ali.

“The NIA investigations have revealed that Jasir had allegedly provided technical support for carrying out terror attacks by modifying drones and attempting to make rockets ahead of the deadly blast,” the NIA said on Monday.

The NIA had said that he was an active co-conspirator behind the attack and had worked closely with the terrorist, Umar un Nabi, to plan the terror carnage.

“The NIA continues to explore various angles to unravel the conspiracy behind the bombing. Several teams of the anti-terror agency are pursuing multiple leads, and are conducting searches across states to identify every person involved in the terror attack,” it had said. —(KNO)

Mehbooba Mufti on Nowgam blast

Srinagar, Nov 18: PDP President Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday said that trained experts should have been tasked to handle the ammonium nitrate involved in the Nowgam Police Station blast, adding that the tragedy could have been avoided with proper safety measures.

She made these remarks during her visit to the Kupwara residence of inspector Peer Asrar ul Haq, one of the nine people who lost their lives in the incident.

Speaking to reporters, Mehbooba said the blast had thrown Kashmir into a difficult and frightening situation, and raised concerns about the way hazardous material was managed.

She said police personnel and other staff were put at unnecessary risk despite the availability of professional expertise that should have been used from the beginning.

Mehbooba added that many of the deceased had very young children who are now left behind, and urged the government to ensure all possible assistance and compensation to the affected families.

She also said those who lost their lives in the Nowgam blast should be honoured with bravery awards for their sacrifice.

Speaking on the Red Fort blast case, she said there should be no collective punishment for Kashmiris and stressed that only those found guilty should be dealt with strictly under the law.

Mehbooba Mufti extended her condolences to the family and called for accountability, proper safety protocols, and trained handling of dangerous materials to prevent such tragedies in future.(KNS)

CM Omar calls for clarity on Nowgam PS Blast

CM Omar calls for clarity on Nowgam PS Blast

Srinagar, Nov 18: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday visited Cygnus Ujala Hospital to meet the injured victims of the Nowgam Police Station blast and said the government owes citizens “clear answers” on how such a massive explosion could take place inside a police facility.

He said the scale of destruction, including the loss of civilians, police personnel, and technical staff, makes a thorough and transparent investigation unavoidable.

Speaking to reporters outside the hospital, Omar said the tragic deaths including a tailor, a photographer and several government staffers have left families devastated. “So many people have lost their precious lives, including police, FSL staff, civil services personnel and even those who had nothing to do with the government. How did this happen? Why did this happen? People deserve answers,” he said.

The Chief Minister said an inquiry is already underway and urged authorities to provide clarity on the circumstances in which such a large quantity of explosives entered and remained inside the premises.

“Such a huge quantity of explosives was brought here. In what conditions was it brought? In what conditions was it kept? In what conditions was it being dealt with? Gradually, we will get the answers,” he said.

Omar praised the immediate response of Cygnus Ujala Hospital staff, who rushed to the spot even before formal communication from authorities. “They saw the explosion and fire from their window and sent their ambulance without waiting for a phone call. Their team reached first and rescued the injured,” he said. Four patients remain in the ICU and several others are under treatment.

He said the government has already announced initial compensation from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, and further support for structural damage to houses is being processed.

“We will provide as much assistance as the procedure allows. Because this happened at a police station, we expect that funds available with the Home Department and especially those placed at the disposal of the Lieutenant Governor should also be used to support the affected families,” he said.

The Chief Minister said he raised concerns at the North Zone Chief Minister’s Conference, held recently in the presence of the Union Home Minister, Home Secretary, and senior officials.

“I requested them not to cast suspicion on the people of Jammu and Kashmir, especially Kashmiri Muslims. Those who are responsible must be punished, but innocent people who have always raised their voice against such violence should not be dragged into this,” he said as per KNS.

Omar also referred to the earlier SRO scheme, now renamed but similar in structure, which provides government jobs as compensation to families of those killed in such incidents. He said the administration should immediately process a case for the family of the deceased tailor. “As soon as the case reaches us, we will approve it,” he said.

Calling for patience and fairness, the Chief Minister said the investigation must speak through facts, not assumptions. “Those responsible must face punishment. But the innocent must not suffer. Before the investigation ends, no one should jump to conclusions,” he said.

Omar said that the public has the right to know the truth: “We hope people will get the answers they deserve.”(KNS)

Death toll in Delhi blast incident rises to 15

Death toll in Delhi blast incident rises to 15

According to Delhi Police, the total number of deceased has reached 15, including three partial body parts. One of the victims succumbed to injuries yesterday, while another victim, named Vinay Pathak, died today.

Investigators probing the terror module allegedly linked to Dr Umar Un Nabi, whom security agencies identified as the one who drove the explosive-laden car which went up in flames in the blast on November 10 at Red Fort, have found evidence of an organised internal structure, encrypted communication channels and coordinated movement of weapons, official sources said on Monday.

According to sources, Umar had created a Signal group around three months ago using a name with special characters. He added Muzammil, Adeel, Muzaffar and Irfan to this encrypted communication platform, which investigators believe was used for internal coordination.

A major lead surfaced after a weapon consignment, including a Krinkov rifle and a pistol, was recovered from the car of Dr Shaheen, a key suspect in the case. The probe has revealed that Umar procured the weapons and handed them over to Irfan in 2024.

Sources said Dr Shaheen had earlier seen the same weapons during a visit to Mufti Irfan’s room with Dr Muzammil. She is also suspected of having made the highest financial contribution to the group’s activities.

The investigation has indicated a clear division of roles. Financial support for the module was to be handled primarily by the three doctors, particularly Muzammil. Recruitment of Kashmiri youths was assigned to Irfan alias Mufti, who allegedly brought in Arif Nisar Dar alias Sahil and Yasir ul Ashraf, both now arrested.

Sources said the probe has documented multiple instances of weapon-related activity. In October 2023, Dr Adeel and Dr Umar visited Irfan at Masjid Ali, carrying a rifle in a bag and left after cleaning the barrel.

In November 2023, Adeel again reached Irfan’s residence with a rifle. Later, Dr Muzammil and Dr Shaheen Shahid also joined. The group left the weapon in Irfan’s custody. Investigators said Adeel returned the next day and collected the weapon.

Officials said the findings point to a coordinated network involving financing, recruitment, and the systematic movement of weapons, operating through encrypted platforms and trusted personal links.

Delhi Police confirmed that the man who carried out the car blast near Red Fort was Dr Umar Un Nabi, after forensic DNA testing matched his biological sample with that of his mother.

However, Al-Falah University has distanced itself from Dr Umar and Dr Muzammil, stating that the University has no connection with the accused beyond their official capacities, and that no questionable chemical or material is being used or stored on the University premises.

On November 10, the blast near the Red Fort complex in the national capital killed 12 people and injured several others.

UN says verdict against Hasina ‘important’ step for victims but regrets death penalty

UN says verdict against Hasina ‘important’ step for victims but regrets death penalty

United Nations, Nov 18: The United Nations has said that the verdict against Bangladesh’s ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina on charges of crimes against humanity is an “important moment” for the victims, but expressed regret over the imposition of the death penalty.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres “fully” agrees with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk on the position that “we stand against the use of the death penalty in all circumstances,” the UN chief’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said at the daily press briefing here on Monday.

Dujarric was responding to a question on the Secretary-General’s reaction to a Bangladeshi court sentencing Hasina to death in absentia.

Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal on Monday found Hasina guilty of crimes against humanity committed during the widespread protests against her government in July last year.

Hasina, 78, who has been living in India since her government was toppled on August 5 last year, was sentenced to death in absentia by the tribunal. Hasina’s aide and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was also sentenced to death on similar charges.

Dujarric referred to a statement issued by Turk’s office on the verdict, noting that UN human rights officials have been calling “diligently for perpetrators, including individuals in positions of command and leadership, to be held accountable”.

“Accountability is critical. It is, of course, very important that people remain calm in Bangladesh following the assurance of the verdict and for all to exercise restraint in response to these developments,” he said.

Geneva-based UN Human Rights Spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani said in a statement that the verdicts delivered by the tribunal against Hasina and the former home minister mark “an important moment for victims of the grave violations committed during the suppression of protests last year”.

“We also regret the imposition of the death penalty, which we oppose in all circumstances,” she said.

Shamdasani noted that since the UN fact-finding report was published in February, “we have been calling for perpetrators, including individuals in positions of command and leadership, to be held accountable in accordance with international standards. We have also called for victims to have access to effective remedies and reparations.”

The UN rights office report estimated that up to 1,400 people were killed between July 15 and August 15 during the student-led mass protests as the Hasina-led government ordered a sweeping security crackdown.

Shamdasani said while the UN Human Rights office was not privy to the conduct of Hasina’s trial, “we have consistently advocated for all accountability proceedings, especially on charges of international crimes, to unquestionably meet international standards of due process and fair trial. This is particularly vital when, as was the case here, the trials have been conducted in absentia and led to a capital punishment sentence”.

Underlining Turk’s call for calm and restraint, she said the High Commissioner hopes Bangladesh will move forward with a comprehensive process of truth-telling, reparation and justice as the pathway to national reconciliation and healing.

“This should include meaningful and transformative security sector reform, which respects international standards, to ensure that these violations and abuses are never repeated,” Shamdasani said, adding that the UN stands ready to support the government and people of Bangladesh in these endeavours.
