Skipping dinner and opting for celebrity one-day meals could harm your health: Expert

Skipping dinner and opting for celebrity one-day meals could harm your health: Expert

Srinagar, July 25: Dinner isn’t merely the final meal of the day — it’s a vital opportunity to nourish your body before the longest period without food during sleep. Beyond nutrition, dinner also serves as a daily chance to connect with family. Research over the years, including a 2021 report by the American College of Pediatricians, has shown that shared evening meals can boost children’s academic performance, encourage healthier eating habits, and reduce childhood obesity.

It’s also the meal where people tend to prioritize vegetables, according to a 2020 article by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). Considering that 90% of Americans fall short of the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables (CDC), dinner offers a key moment to catch up on essential nutrients. In fact, adults consume more calories during dinner than any other meal, as reported by the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.

Every meal plays a crucial role in maintaining our health, and dinner is no exception,” says Dr. Sudeep Khanna, gastroenterologist and gastrointestinal medicine specialist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Delhi. “As the final major meal of the day, dinner is essential for everyone — whether you’re 20 or 50. Age is no barrier to its importance. It provides the necessary calories and nutrients to sustain the body through the longest fasting period — sleep.”

Dinner habits vary widely in timing — people typically eat dinner between 5:07 p.m. and 8:19 p.m., with the peak around 6:19 p.m. However, most people still dine at home: about 80% of dinners are homemade, according to IFT. Chicken remains a go-to dinner staple for 70% of millennials during the week.

Over the long term, skipping meals regularly can have a negative impact on your health. Eating just one meal a day was linked to a higher mortality risk, and skipping lunch or dinner specifically increased the risk of cardiovascular disease,

According to a study published in March 2023 in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition dietetics in the short term, skipping dinner can lead to fluctuations in blood sugar that can leave you feeling shaky or lacking energy. “It can make your body feel more stressed. It can make it harder to sleep,” says Lena Beal, RDN, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

In recent years, attitudes toward dinner have shifted. A study by Hunter PR found that 54% of Americans are cooking more often post-COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, dietary trends like intermittent fasting have become mainstream — one in ten Americans follow this pattern, potentially reducing how often dinner is consumed. Still, the majority — about 64%, according to the USDA — continue to eat three meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Another study in 2020 had shown how skipping meals plunged older adults deeper into depression, anxiety and insomnia. A recent Harvard study has found that sticking to a healthy diet in midlife has a direct impact on healthy ageing.

Gold falls Rs 500 to Rs 99,120/10 g; silver trades flat

Gold declines Rs 600 to Rs 99,020 per 10 g; silver plunges Rs 1,000

New Delhi, July 25: Gold prices extended losses for the second straight day, by declining Rs 500 to Rs 99,120 per 10 grams in the national capital on Friday, amid easing global trade tensions and dampening the safe-haven demand.

According to the All India Sarafa Association, the precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had finished at Rs 99,620 per 10 grams on Thursday.

At the local markets, gold of 99.5 per cent purity also decreased Rs 500 to Rs 98,750 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Friday as against the previous closing level of Rs 99,250 per 10 grams.

“Gold edged lower on Friday impacted by easing tariff-related concerns, a rebound in the US dollar, and waning expectations for multiple interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve due to a strong job market,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities.

However, silver prices traded flat at Rs 1,15,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Friday, as per the association.

Gandhi further highlighted that the US has already secured a trade deal with Japan, and there is optimism surrounding the US-EU trade agreement. Additionally, the US is expected to have trade pacts with India, Mexico, and Brazil, which may further increase selling pressure in bullion.

Spot gold fell by USD 20.72 or 0.62 per cent to USD 3,347.94 per ounce in the international markets.

“Gold traded weak at USD 3,345 per ounce, as expectations of tariff deals between the US and trade partners like Japan and the EU reduced safe-haven appeal.

“These developments may keep gold volatile, especially at elevated levels. Focus now shifts to the upcoming Fed’s interest rate decision next week, which will be crucial for the direction of bullion prices,” Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, said.

On the global front, spot silver slipped by 0.35 per cent to trade at USD 38.92 per ounce.

Mirwaiz condemns Israel action on Gaza, says ‘silence of global community is pathetic’

MMU calls for shutdown against tourist killings in Pahalgam tomorrow

Srinagar, July 25: Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday condemned the Israeli actions in Gaza and said “silence and inaction” of the global community was “pathetic”.

Addressing the Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid here, he said, “As we gather here in peace, our hearts bleed for our brothers and sisters in Gaza, who are facing an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe and starvation. Innocent civilians, especially children, are being relentlessly bombarded even as they search for food and safety. Starvation is being used as a weapon of war.”

Condemning the “barbarism”, he added, “The silence and inaction of the global community is pathetic. The world’s failure to prevent these atrocities, to stop the killing of children and civilians in real time, will remain a stain on the conscience of humanity.”

The Hurriyat chief said that as the people of faith, “we stand in solidarity with the oppressed people of Gaza and pray to God to bring them out of this unprecedented crisis”.

Mirwaiz was allowed to offer prayers at the grand mosque after two weeks.

“After two Fridays, I was allowed to come to Jama Masjid. Repeatedly preventing me from coming to Jama Masjid on Fridays is completely uncalled for. It is a direct interference in the religious rights of people, which alienates them further, serving no other purpose,” he said.

He asked the administration to desist from such actions and let people have the freedom to practice their fundamental rights, which includes the right to practice religion and listen to Friday sermons.

Why is Microsoft investing 1.7 billion dollars in organic waste disposal

Why is Microsoft investing 1.7 billion dollars in organic waste disposal

Srinagar, July 25: Microsoft is diving into one of the most unconventional areas of the carbon removal industry—human and industrial waste. The tech giant has signed a 12-year agreement with climate-tech startup Vaulted Deep, under which it will purchase 4.9 million metric tons of organic waste, including manure, sewage sludge, and paper mill residues, starting next year.

This deal, valued at approximately $1.7 billion based on an estimated price of $350 per ton of carbon, marks one of Microsoft’s most significant investments in carbon removal. Vaulted Deep found in 2023 specialises in collecting contaminated bioslurry waste that’s too messy to reuse and piping it 5000 feet below the Earth’s surface. Once buried, the decomposition process stops, locking in methane and CO₂ that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.

Microsoft’s environmental idea comes at a time when its energy hungry AI operations are increasing its carbon emissions. Between 2020 and 2024, the company released 75.5 million tons of CO2. At the same time, its goal is to become carbon negative by 2030 and to remove more carbon than it can by 2050.

To hit that target, Microsoft is betting on a suite of experimental technologies. Vaulted Deep’s project joins a diverse carbon removal portfolio that includes reforesting Panama and capturing trash incineration emissions in Norway for storage beneath the North Sea. According to Inc., the current cost of CO2 removal with the company is $350 per ton. If you multiply that by Microsoft’s contract, that makes it worth more than $1.7 billion. However, neither entity has disclosed the actual terms of the deal, and CEO Julia Reichelstein says the company expects its costs to drop over time, and that the mentioned price isn’t the actual sum that the tech giant paid.

Projects such as these enable Microsoft and other tech giants to offset the massive amounts of carbon emissions produced by data centers, particularly as they consume a significant amount of electrical power, often generated from fossil fuels. For example, Musk is facing legal action in Memphis, Tennessee, after his company, xAI, is accused polluting the air by using under reported power generators at the Colossus Supercomputer. Aside from that, many companies, including Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Oracle, and others, are investing in small modular reactor research to establish their clean energy sources for their expanding data center businesses.

Don’t mistake our silence for weakness: Dy CM Surinder Choudhry

Don’t mistake our silence for weakness: Dy CM Surinder Choudhry

Srinagar, July 25: Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhry on Friday said that the current administration is reviewing several sensitive files from past governments and warned that their silence should not be seen as a sign of weakness.

“We are going through files for the past 8–9 months. If anything wrong has happened, we will bring it before the people. Our silence is not our weakness it’s an attempt to maintain relations with Delhi. But if needed, we will speak up with facts,” Choudhry said.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency, especially in electoral matters. “We’ve always believed in transparency. If any mistakes happened in the voter lists, they will be addressed. Elections are won by people, not by lists,” he added.

Choudhry also called on the media in Jammu and Kashmir to play a positive role. “You show both our flaws and our good work. We have a sweet relationship with you, and we will keep feeding you sweets but you must also honour our trust,” he said.

In a sharp political attack, Choudhry questioned BJP’s 11-year rule in J&K. “Did militancy stop? Did corruption end? If so, why did Pulwama and other incidents happen even after Article 370 and 35A were abrogated?”

According to KNS, Dy CM said that the Article 370 was granted during Maharaja Hari Singh’s time, not by political leaders. “Restrictions were imposed to protect our lands and jobs from outsiders. Even Maharaja Karan Singh said this,” Choudhry noted.

He said, “If someone asks us for our life with love, we will give it. But don’t challenge our silence if we start speaking, we’ll tell everything, page by page.(KNS)
