Describing Govind Guru a hero of India’s freedom movement who fought against the British rulers, Shah said, “Around 1,512 tribal brothers and sisters were martyred in that struggle against the British, and Mangadh (in Gujarat) became an important place in the history of India’s fight for independence.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken forward the heroism of Govind Guru, and is determined to make India a great nation by 2047, he said.

13 soldiers killed, 29 injured in suicide bombing in Pakistan's north Waziristan

Islamabad, June 28: As many as 13 Pakistani soldiers were killed and 29 others injured, including 19 civilians, in a suicide attack early Saturday morning in Khadi area of North Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Citing security agencies, Pakistani media outlet Mashriq TV stated that a suicide bomber crashed an explosive-laden vehicle into a mine-resistant Improvised Explosive Device (IED) vehicle belonging to the Bomb Disposal Unit amid a curfew imposed due to military movement in the area. The powerful blast resulted in the killing of 13 military personnel and injuring 29 people, including 19 civilians.

There were reports of indiscriminate firing also which caused injuries to 19 civilians, including women and children, in the area.

Reports suggest that the rescue operations were launched immediately following the blast. According to local authorities, the condition of several injured, including women and children, remains critical and the number of casualties might rise significantly.

The Usud al-Harab organisation, a sub-faction of the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group affiliated with Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) Pakistan, has reportedly taken responsibility for the suicide attack.

The incident is termed as the deadliest attack in North Waziristan in recent months, raising serious concerns over the deteriorating security conditions in the area.

The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan Army, has not yet commented on the attack.

According to reports, the security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation in the region.

Last month, a car bomb explosion in Gulistan Area of Qila Abdullah, a border area of Pakistan’s Balochistan province with Afghanistan, killed at least four people and injured more than 20 others, eight of them critically injured.

The explosion occurred in Jabbar commercial market situated on the Quetta–Chaman National Highway in Gulistan town, adjacent to the fort of Pakistan’s Frontier Corps (FC).

As per details, the massive explosion destroyed many shops and vehicles parked in the area and walls of the FC Fort were also damaged. Locals said that many shops in the market also caught fire.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan had claimed responsibility for the attack with Pakistani analysts suggesting a clear coordination between the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and the TTP, who have intensified their attacks in the recent past.

At the same time, the BLA has also intensified its attacks on security forces in the province.

Article 370 was against Dr Ambedkar’s idealogy of one Constitution for united India: CJI Gavai

Article 370 was against Dr Ambedkar's idealogy of one Constitution for united India: CJI Gavai

Nagpur, June 28: Chief Justice of India B R Gavai on Saturday said Dr B R Ambedkar envisioned one Constitution for the country to keep it united and never favoured the idea of a separate constitution for a state.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Constitution Preamble Park here, the CJI said the Supreme Court drew inspiration from Dr Ambedkar’s vision of a united India under a single constitution while upholding the Centre’s decision to abrogate Article 370 that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Gavai was part of a five-judge Constitution bench, headed by then Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, that unanimously upheld the Centre’s decision to abrogate Article 370, which bestowed special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

“When Article 370 was challenged, it came before us, and when the hearing was underway, I recalled Dr Babasaheb’s words that one Constitution is suited for a country… If we want to keep the country united, we need only one Constitution,” he said, while addressing the gathering in Marathi.

On August 5, 2019, the Centre decided to strip Jammu and Kashmir of special status and divide it into two Union Territories.

Gavai said Dr Ambedkar had been criticised, saying the Constitution provides for too much federalism, and in times of war, the country may not remain united.

However, he had responded, saying the Constitution would suit all the challenges and keep the nation united, the CJI said.

“See the situation in the neighbouring countries, be it Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka. Whenever our country faces challenges, it has remained united,” Gavai said.

Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said he was happy that CJI Gavai inaugurated the Constitution Preamble Park and unveiled a statue of Dr Ambedkar.

Freedom, equality and brotherhood were Dr Ambedkar’s valuable gift to the country in the form of the Constitution, he said.

Gadkari said that the Constitution has clearly stated the responsibilities and rights of the four pillars of democracy, i.e. executive, judiciary, legislature and media.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Gavai was performing his responsibility as the Chief Justice of India ably.

Highlighting the importance of the Constitution, Fadnavis said the government has decided that the Preamble of the Constitution should reach every student to mark the Amrit Mohotsav of the Constitution.

“If we accept the values of the Preamble, 90 per cent of the country’s problems will be solved forever,” he said.

At least 34 people killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza as ceasefire prospects inch closer

At least 34 people killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza as ceasefire prospects inch closer

Deir al-Balah, Jun 28: At least 34 people were killed across Gaza by Israeli strikes, health staff say, as Palestinians face a growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and ceasefire prospects inch closer.

The strikes began late Friday and continued into Saturday morning, among others killing 12 people at the Palestine Stadium in Gaza City, which was sheltering displaced people, and eight more living in apartments, according to staff at Shifa hospital where the bodies were brought.

Six others were killed in southern Gaza when a strike hit their tent in Muwasi, according to the hospital.

The strikes come as US President Donald Trump says there could be a ceasefire agreement within the next week. Taking questions from reporters in the Oval Office Friday, the president said, “we’re working on Gaza and trying to get it taken care of.”

An official with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that Israel’s Minister for Strategic Affairs, Ron Dermer, will arrive in Washington next week for talks on Gaza’s ceasefire, Iran and other subjects. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Talks have been on again off again since Israel broke the latest ceasefire in March, continuing its military campaign in Gaza and furthering the Strip’s dire humanitarian crisis.

Some 50 hostages remain in Gaza, fewer than half of them believed to still be alive. They were part of some 250 hostages taken when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, sparking the 21-month-long war.

The war has killed over 56,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. It says more than half of the dead were women and children.

There is hope among hostage families that Trump’s involvement in securing the recent ceasefire between Israel and Iran might exert more pressure for a deal in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is riding a wave of public support for the Iran war and its achievements, and he could feel he has more space to move toward ending the war in Gaza, something his far-right governing partners oppose.

Hamas has repeatedly said it is prepared to free all the hostages in exchange for an end to the war in Gaza. Netanyahu says he will only end the war once Hamas is disarmed and exiled, something the group has rejected.

Meanwhile hungry Palestinians are enduring a catastrophic situation in Gaza. After blocking all food for 2 1/2 months, Israel has allowed only a trickle of supplies into the territory since mid-May.

Efforts by the United Nations to distribute the food have been plagued by armed gangs looting trucks and by crowds of desperate people offloading supplies from convoys.

Palestinians have also been shot and wounded while on their way to get food at newly formed aid sites, run by the American and Israeli backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, according to Gaza’s health officials and witnesses.

Palestinian witnesses say Israeli troops have opened fire at crowds on the roads heading toward the sites. Israel’s military said it was investigating incidents in which civilians had been harmed while approaching the sites.

J&K court rejects bail plea of man accused of raping 70-year-old tourist

J&K court rejects bail plea of man accused of raping 70-year-old tourist

Srinagar, June 28:  A court in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district has rejected the bail plea of a man accused of raping a 70-year-old tourist from Maharashtra.

While rejecting the bail plea, the court delivered a scathing remark on the moral fabric of society and said the incident is a reflection of the prevailing “depravity and sick mentality” in the society.

Principal Sessions Judge Anantnag, Tahir Khurshid Raina, rejected the bail application of the accused, Zubair Ahmad from Ganeshbal Pahalgam, on Friday.

The alleged incident occurred at a hotel in the famous tourist resort of Pahalgam in the south Kashmir district where the woman was staying with her amily in April.

According to the police investigation, the accused unlawfully entered the septuagenarian woman’s hotel room when she was alone, gagged her mouth with a blanket, raped her, inflicted injuries and fled through the window.

The assault was so brutal that the victim was unable to sit and move and remained in pain for several days.

However, the accused filed for bail through his counsel, alleging false implication and bias on part of the police due to personal enmity.

The accused also argued that no test identification parade had been conducted and that he was cooperating with the investigation.

The judge noted while the investigation is going on, the perusal of the case diary file (CF) prima facie reveals the commission of offence of rape on a senior citizen lady in a highly dastardly manner.

“This is what she has carried from the Pahalgam for the rest of her life where she had come to enjoy the beauty of Kashmir,” the Judge noted.

He said the medical opinion, forensic reports and the victim’s statement prima facie support the allegations of rape and negates the grounds of bail advanced by the accused.

“I do not find any of the ground pleaded in the application and arguments advanced by the counsel for the accused to influence the judicial conscience of this court to describe the incarceration of the accused as legally unsustainable and unwarranted at this stage of the investigation, which is even yet to culminate into a charge sheet,” the court said while rejecting the bail plea.

It said the incident is not an isolated act to be ignored, but a reflection of a highest degree of depravity and sick mentality prevailing in the society, which must bow its head in shame and invites a serious introspection as to what it stood for, and how that has now collapsed.

The principal sessions judge expressed its concern over the incident saying it is highly unfortunate, condemnable by all possible words, and ought to have jolted the conscience of this society — which claims its moorings to be based on rich ethical values and culture — but now stands shaken to the hilt.

“A revered guest, who was a senior lady, was on her visit to this land of saints and seers, was treated so shabbily and shockingly that for all times to come, she will have remorse over the choice of place she made to spend a period of her old age days with her children,” the court said.

The judge expressed concern over the eroding moral compass of society, and called for introspection.

“No sooner the sheet-anchors, conscious keepers, watch dogs, and philanthropists of this society will rise to the occasion to check what is going wrong on the moral front of the society, the better will be for saving the Kashmir as the paradise on earth in its true sense,” Raina observed.

“Mere meadows, mountains, lush green fields, forests, springs, rivers, rivulets and gardens will not come to the rescue of Kashmir as a desired tourist destination,” the judge added.

Deadly blood cancer can now be detected early with blood test: Study

Deadly blood cancer can now be detected early with blood test: Study

New Delhi, June 28: A team of Israeli and US researchers have developed a simple blood test that can detect a person’s risk of developing leukaemia — a deadly blood cancer.

In the study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, the researchers suggested that this test may replace the current more invasive method of bone marrow sampling used to diagnose certain blood cancers, Xinhua news agency reported.

The team led by researchers from Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel focused on myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) — an age-related condition in which blood-forming stem cells do not develop properly.

MDS can lead to severe anaemia and may progress to acute myeloid leukaemia, one of the most common types of blood cancer in adults.

Currently, diagnosing MDS requires the bone marrow sampling procedure that involves local anaesthesia and can cause significant discomfort and pain.

The team discovered that rare stem cells, which occasionally leave the bone marrow and enter the bloodstream, carry crucial information about early signs of MDS.

Using advanced single-cell genetic sequencing, they were able to analyse these cells from a standard blood sample and detect warning signs of disease.

The researchers also found that these circulating stem cells can act like a biological “clock,” offering insights into a person’s chronological age.

In men, these cells change earlier than in women, which may help explain why blood cancers are more common in males.

“The researchers also discovered that the migrating stem cells can serve as a clock for our chronological age, and that in males, their population changes earlier than in women in a way that increases the risk of cancer. This finding may explain the higher prevalence of blood cancers among men,” said Dr. Nili Furer, from Weizmann.

The researchers believe this blood test may also help identify other age-related blood disorders in the future.

They noted that the findings are being tested in a large-scale clinical trial at multiple medical centres worldwide.
