Jammu railway division earns Rs 66.50 lakh from ticket-checking drive in May

Jammu, June 1: Northern Railway’s Jammu Division has earned Rs 66.50 lakh through a special ticket-checking drive conducted across its jurisdiction in May 2026 to curb ticketless and irregular travel and protect railway revenue.

According to official figures available till May 31, the division registered 12,693 cases against passengers travelling without tickets or involved in other forms of irregular travel in the month-long drive. “The enforcement drive generated revenue of Rs 66,50,165,” they said.

Railway officials said intensive checking was carried out by ticket-checking staff at railway stations, aboard trains and on platforms. The revenue was collected from passengers found travelling without tickets, without valid passes, present on platforms without platform tickets and for other ticketing irregularities, they said.

Jammu Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal said that ticketless travel not only causes financial losses to the Railways but also creates inconvenience for passengers travelling with valid tickets. He said the practice often leads to unauthorised occupation of seats, overcrowding and security-related concerns.

He said special checking squads are being regularly deployed by the division to address the issue. He added that the objective of such drives is not merely to collect penalties but also to create awareness among passengers about the importance of travelling with valid tickets.

He urged passengers to obtain valid tickets before commencing their journey through computerised reservation centres, the UTS mobile application, the IRCTC platform or ticket counters.

He also advised those visiting railway stations to receive or see off passengers to purchase platform tickets.

Singhal warned that passengers found travelling without tickets could face penalties and legal action under Sections 137 and 138 of the Railways Act, 1989.

Northern Railway’s Jammu Division said similar enforcement drives would continue in the future to ensure transparency in railway operations and provide better facilities to genuine passengers.

RISE Institute records 15+ IIT selections; six girls from J&K crack IIT in a historic first

RISE Institute records 15+ IIT selections; six girls from J&K crack IIT in a historic first

RISE Institute, Srinagar’s leading coaching centre for JEE and NEET preparation, has announced 15+ IIT selections in JEE Advanced 2026, adding another milestone to its unbroken legacy as the only institute in Kashmir to have sent students to the IITs every single year since its founding in 2012.

The standout story of this year’s result is the selection of six girls from Jammu & Kashmir — Soliha, Hyfa, Nuha, and Ayesha from Kashmir, and Isma and Parveen from Kargil, Ladakh. Last year, three girls qualifying for IIT from Kashmir was an achievement so rare it made national headlines, drew a congratulatory tweet from the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, and was covered by The Hindu and The Indian Express. This year, RISE has doubled that number.

Particularly noteworthy are the two selections from Kargil — Isma and Parveen — from a region that has historically had limited access to structured IIT coaching. For Kargil, which sits at the edge of Ladakh and has long been underserved in terms of competitive exam preparation, these selections represent more than individual achievement. They signal that the aspiration and talent to reach India’s most prestigious engineering institutions exists far beyond the metros, and that the right guidance can unlock it.

The broader significance of six girls cracking IIT from Jammu & Kashmir cannot be overstated. In a region where societal pressures, limited role models, and geographical barriers have historically made it difficult for girls to pursue competitive engineering education, this result challenges every one of those narratives. Each name on this list — Soliha, Hyfa, Nuha, Ayesha, Isma, Parveen — becomes a reference point for the next girl in Kashmir or Kargil who dares to imagine an IIT.

RISE is the only institute in Kashmir to have maintained an unbroken streak of IIT selections year after year. With over 1,000 cumulative IIT and NIT selections since its inception, the institute has quietly built a track record that few coaching centres anywhere in the country can match on a per-student basis. Its students have gone on to study at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, AIIMS, and even internationally at Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania.

RISE was co-founded by Mubeen Masudi, an alumnus of IIT Bombay, and Salman Shahid and Imbesat Ahmad, both alumni of IIT Kharagpur. The three founders left behind careers elsewhere to invest in the educational future of Kashmir — a decision that has since transformed the academic trajectories of hundreds of students from the Valley and beyond. Co-founder Salman Shahid, who hails from Delhi, was honoured with the prestigious Young Alumni Achiever Award by IIT Kharagpur in recognition of his contribution to education in Kashmir through RISE.

The work of RISE has not gone unnoticed. The institute has been covered by leading national and international media houses including BBC, The Hindu, and The Indian Express, reflecting the wider recognition of what is being built in the Kashmir Valley. Each year’s result has drawn fresh attention to the story of a region rewriting its own educational narrative, one IIT seat at a time.

“Kashmir has always had brilliant minds. What it needed was the right environment and the belief that these dreams were achievable. Today’s result — 15+ IITs, six girls, two from Kargil — is proof that when you invest in students with sincerity, they surpass every expectation. We are immensely proud of each one of them, and we are just getting started.”

— Mubeen Masudi, Co-founder, RISE Institute (IIT Bombay)

“When Soliha, Hyfa, Nuha, Ayesha, Isma, and Parveen cracked IIT, they didn’t just secure a seat at one of the world’s most competitive institutions — they told every young girl in Kashmir and Kargil that the door is open for her too. That is what moves us the most. The numbers matter, but these six names are a movement.”

— Salman Shahid, Co-founder, RISE Institute (IIT Kharagpur)

As JEE Advanced 2026 results mark another chapter in RISE’s story, the institute remains focused on what it has always believed: that every student in Kashmir, regardless of background or geography, deserves access to the kind of preparation that gives them a genuine shot at the best institutions in the world. This year’s result is evidence that the mission is working.

Tourism stakeholders fear setback as Srinagar airport faces bi-weekly closure

Tourism stakeholders fear setback as Srinagar airport faces bi-weekly closure

Srinagar, June 1: The decision to suspend passenger flight operations at Srinagar International Airport for two days every week between July and September due to runway resurfacing has triggered concern among Kashmir’s tourism and travel stakeholders, who fear the move could disrupt the Valley’s peak tourism season and impact visitor arrivals.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has confirmed that Srinagar Airport will remain closed every Monday and Tuesday from July 1 until the end of September to facilitate runway repair works. Industry representatives warn that the move could lead to booking cancellations, travel inconvenience and financial losses for tourism-dependent businesses.

Director, Airports Authority of India (AAI), Srinagar, Javed Anjum, told Greater Kashmir the airport authorities had received official communication regarding the closure schedule.

The development comes at a time when Kashmir’s tourism sector has been showing signs of recovery after a difficult period, with stakeholders saying tourist arrivals had started improving in recent weeks.

President of the Jammu and Kashmir Hoteliers Club, Mushtaq Ahmad Chaya, said the timing of the decision could adversely affect the sector just as it was regaining momentum.

“Tourism was picking up, and this directive will derail the momentum. We urge the government and concerned authorities to explore alternative ways of carrying out the work,” Chaya said.

He said the closure of the Valley’s only civilian airport for two days every week would significantly affect travel plans for both tourists and residents.

“The airport is the primary air link connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country. Shutting it down for two days every week will have a serious impact. Instead of a complete closure, authorities should consider a time-window arrangement that allows flights to operate while repair works continue,” he said.

President of the Travel Agents Society of Kashmir (TASK), Muhammad Ibrahim Siah, termed the decision unfortunate and said tourism stakeholders were not consulted before the schedule was finalised.

“It is unfortunate that such a decision has been taken without consulting stakeholders. Tourism will be badly affected because if the airport remains closed for two out of seven days, cancellations are inevitable and passenger traffic will be concentrated on the remaining operational days,” Siah said.

He said Srinagar Airport already faces infrastructure and capacity constraints and may struggle to handle increased passenger traffic on the remaining days.

“Our airport infrastructure is not equipped to handle excessive rush on limited operational days. This decision will create inconvenience for travellers and may discourage potential visitors,” he said.

Travel agent Farah Rashid also expressed concern over the impact on tour planning and visitor confidence, saying travel businesses had already begun receiving queries from worried customers.

“Many tourists plan short trips to Kashmir, and fixed-day airport closures can disrupt itineraries. There is a real possibility of cancellations and postponements, especially among family and group travellers who rely on flexible flight schedules,” Rashid said.

She said travel operators would also face logistical challenges in rescheduling bookings.

“Travel agents will have to rearrange flights, hotel bookings and local transportation according to the airport schedule. This will increase costs and create inconvenience for both tourists and operators,” she added.

Notably, an earlier communication issued by the Indian Air Force in February to the Airports Authority of India and airlines operating to Srinagar had proposed the closure of airport operations on Saturdays and Sundays from August 1 to October 15 for resurfacing works. However, airport officials have confirmed that the schedule has since been revised.

“Instead of weekends, the airport will remain closed every Monday and Tuesday for three months beginning July 1,” an airport official said, adding that a decision regarding airport operations beyond September would be taken at a later stage.

Tourism stakeholders have urged authorities to reconsider the closure schedule or adopt a phased approach to the repair works to minimise disruption during one of Kashmir’s most important travel seasons. They warned that prolonged interruptions in air connectivity could adversely affect tourist arrivals, hotel occupancy and the wider network of businesses dependent on the tourism industry.

Chenab-Beas tunnel project will teach Pakistan a lesson: HP Guv

Shimla, Jun 1: The Chenab-Beas tunnel project is of paramount importance as its construction would divert surplus water from the Chenab river through a tunnel into the Beas basin, thereby cutting off the water supply to Pakistan, said Himachal Governor Kavinder Gupta on Monday.

Talking with the media here after taking part in the self-enumeration drive of the census, which commenced in the state on June 1, he said that Pakistan actively fosters terrorism and it is essential to teach it a lesson.

He said this initiative represents a necessary step toward rectifying past errors and emphasised that fulfilling the needs of Punjab, Himachal, Haryana, and Uttarakhand remains a top priority for the government.

The governor said that the census data would help the government in formulating schemes related to poverty alleviation, healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.

He urged every citizen to cooperate in this drive by providing accurate information.

In Himachal, citizens can conduct their own self-enumeration via an online portal or a mobile application from June 1 to June 15. During this period, individuals are required to personally fill in the details of all their family members.

RCB sustains winning culture, MI and LSG face uncertain future

New Delhi, Jun 01: Royal Challengers Bengaluru looked the part in another supremely successful campaign, Gujarat Titans maintained their remarkable play-off consistency while the underwhelming performance of IPL biggies Mumbai Indians and laggards Lucknow Super Giants set off the transition for the next season even before the curtains came down on the 2026 edition.

Anyone can beat anyone in T20 cricket and that reflected in the competitive nature of the league with play-off spots decided on the final day of the league stage.

RCB, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad had already qualified before the last day of the league stage but a resurgent Rajasthan Royals joined them as the fourth team in the play-offs with a win over Mumbai Indians on May 24. Royals knocked an up and down Punjab Kings out of the competition on the concluding day.

PTI looks back the how the season went by for the 10 teams in the world’s grandest T20 league (going by where they finished on points table).

Royal Challengers Bengaluru

The franchise, starved of an IPL title for 18 years, seems to have made winning a habit after their pathbreaking triumph last season. The think tank led by Andy Flower and Mo Bobat have put together a champion squad that is delivering handsomely on the field.

RCB would wish there is no mega auction in the foreseeable future with majority of the players in the squad taking their game to the next level season after season.

Their mindset this season was not defend their title, it was to aggressively chase for another trophy. They certainly walked the talk on that front.

Superstar Virat Kohli keeps reinventing his game even at this stage of his career to compete with “the super young”, Bhuvneshwar Kumar turned back the clock with a stellar presentation of “wobbly seam” according to none other than Sachin Tendulkar.

He got good support from Josh Hazlewood in the second half of the tournament, Krunal Pandya surprised with his variations on way to a fifth IPL title while pacer Rasikh Dar too came of age this season.

Devdutt Padikkal made clear changes to his conventional game to meet the demands of modern T20 while captain Rajat Patidar forced national selectors to take notice with his match winning performances.

Venkatesh Iyer was brought in as the impact player late in the tournament and he too delivered. RCB seemed like the most complete side of the competition and they surely played like one.

Gujarat Titans

If RCB have made winning a habit, Titans have emerged as one of the most consistent teams in its brief IPL history. They have made three finals in five attempts including a title on debut.

Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler kept piling on the runs at the top of the order. In case of their rare failure, the middle order doesn’t inspire the same confidence and that is one area Titans looking to shore up at the next auction.

Their bowling was arguably the best in the tournament, yet they could not cross the final hurdle. Experts feel they are a side which doesn’t have a Plan B in case their sublime top order and the new ball bowlers misfire. It seldom happened in the tournament but when it did, Titans could not find a way back.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

The Pat Cummins-led side did not do much do wrong this season after a slow start and were eventually outdone by the individual brilliance of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Jofra Archer in the Eliminator.

Among the big positives for them were the emergence of pacers like Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain.

After a disappointing last season, Nitish Reddy came up with timely contributions with both bat and ball.

The destructive top order including Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head and Ishan Kishan were again among the runs though the Australian did not have a season he probably wanted to considering his high standards.

Heinrich Klaasen at number four was the standout batter who enjoyed the best season of his long IPL career with 624 runs at a strike rate of 160.

SRH were good on flat tracks but not so good when they travelled outside Hyderabad.

Rajasthan Royals

By captain Riyan Parag’s own admission, Royals should have qualified much earlier than final day of the league stage. Their campaign was heavily dependant on 15-year-old wonder kid Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who ended up being the leading run getter in his first full season with 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30.

Archer was among the leading wicket takers of the tournament with 25 scalps, proving the breakthroughs regularly in his opening burst.

When both Sooryavanshi and Archer did not fire, the team struggled. Dhruv Jurel had a phenomenal season as a batter, Yash Raj Punja was their lead spinner ahead of Ravi Bishnoi while they missed the services of Sam Curran due to an injury.

Parag did well to make the play-off in his first season as captain but could not be consistent with the bat.

Off-field incidents too headlined their campaign with team manager Romi Bhinder fined Rs one lakh for using a cellphone in the dugout while Parag was caught vaping in the dressing room on national television.

Punjab Kings

The most dominant team of the IPL’s first half somehow messed up their play-off chances in the second half, losing six games in a row.

Their in form batting covered up for a wayward bowling attack in the first half before their performance dipped in all three departments including fielding.

Captain Shreyas Iyer had a decent season with the bat but the team will have to bolster its bowling at the auction. The up and down performance Arshdeep Singh also impacted the team adversely.

Delhi Capitals

For the second season in a row, Delhi Capitals failed to make the play-offs under Axar Patel.

It was another season where KL Rahul scored 500 plus runs which actually had little or no value in the final context.

The side did not have the batting firepower to push deeper into the tournament with too many one dimensional players in the line-up.

The bowling too did not have required potency, made worse by the absence of Mitchell Starc in the first half of the competition.

Their main spinner Kuldeep Yadav had a season to forget while the in-form Lungi Ngidi too could not do enough on his own.

DC are among the teams expected to change their leadership going forward.

Kolkata Knight Riders

KKR did well to finish seventh out of 10 teams after losing their first six games.

There is a strong possibility that Ajinkya Rahane has played his last season in the IPL.

The team struggled in all departments and is in need of an overhaul. Cameron Green also did not have a season to remember after being bought for a record 25.20 crore at the auction.

Chennai Super Kings:

The five time champions have not made the play-off since their title winning run in 2023.

The storied franchise led by Ruturaj Gaikwad needs a change of approach. First of all, there needs to be clarity over M S Dhoni so that they can move on from the glory days under the former India captain. He did not play a single game this season due to an injury but no one save Dhoni knows what’s in store next season.

Gaikwad has not flourished as a batter since being appointed captain in 2024. The batting is inexperienced with the likes of Urvil Patel yet to prove themselves.

With Hardik Pandya set to leave Mumbai Indians, CSK could consider his services in a leadership role. Alternatively, Sanju Samson is a ready captaincy choice if they decide to go in that direction.

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians, a team full of India stars, disappointed the most this season. The quartet of Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Verma had a season to forget. Rohit Sharma did alright at the top but his season was impacted by injury.

Throughout the season, there were murmurs of division within the leadership group with Hardik left to fight on his own. It remains to be seen who the team management and owner choose for the captaincy job next season. Bumrah, among the most accomplished in the squad, could take over.

Lucknow Super Giants

A revamp for next season is already in motion following the stepping down of captain Rishabh Pant after two forgettable years.

The batting flopped big time in the first half while the bowlers led by Mohammed Shami, Mohsin Khan and Prince Yadav impressed. Mohsin was the only bowler who sent down an unprecedented maiden over to Sooryavanshi.

In the second half, the bowling standards dropped while the batting could never fire in unison. Pant had another ordinary season, Nicholas Pooran was disappointing to say the least.

Justin Langer and Tom Moody along with Sanjiv Goenka will go on a captain shopping during mini-auction at the end of this year.

Srinagar airport to remain closed for flights every Monday and Tuesday from July to September

Srinagar airport to remain closed for flights every Monday and Tuesday from July to September

Srinagar, June 1: At a time when runway repair works at Srinagar International Airport have led to complications involving the baggage of Hajj pilgrims returning from the annual pilgrimage, the airport is set to witness a twice-a-week closure from July through September this year.

According to Director, Airports Authority of India (AAI), Srinagar, Javed Anjum, the airport will remain closed every Monday and Tuesday from July until the end of September.

“We have received communication that due to runway repair works, passenger flight operations will be suspended on every Monday and Tuesday during July, August and September,” Anjum said.

Notably, a letter issued by the Indian Air Force in February to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and all airlines operating flights to Srinagar had stated that the airport would remain closed every Saturday and Sunday from August 1 to October 15 due to resurfacing work. A copy of the communication is with Greater Kashmir.

However, airport officials have now confirmed that the previously scheduled closure days have been revised.

“Instead of weekends, the airport will remain closed every Monday and Tuesday for three months beginning July 1,” an official said.

The official added that a decision regarding airport operations beyond September will be taken at a later stage.

Earlier, flight operations at Srinagar International Airport were restricted between April and July to facilitate runway works.

A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) issued by the Indian Air Force stated that runway works commencing in the first week of April would temporarily restrict operational hours for scheduled flights until 5 pm from April 6 to July 31. The Airports Authority of India, Srinagar, had also shared the information through its official X handle.

Before the operational window was curtailed, around 60 flight movements (arrivals and departures) were handled daily between 8 am and 10 pm at Srinagar Airport. However, despite the restriction of flight operations to the period between 8 am and 5 pm, the number of flights has largely remained unchanged and has, at times, even increased.

At present, Srinagar Airport handles nearly 35 to 40 flight arrivals daily.

“While the watch hours have been reduced, flight movements are expected to increase in line with the DGCA-approved Summer Schedule. Airlines will plan and operate flights accordingly within the revised timings,” the AAI had said.

Security arrangements reviewed for Amarnath yatra

Jammu, Jun 01: Top civil and police officials on Monday reviewed preparations and security arrangements for the forthcoming annual Amarnath yatra.

The 57-day pilgrimage is scheduled to commence on July 3 from the twin routes — the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam track in Anantnag district and the 14-km shorter but steeper Baltal route in Ganderbal district — and conclude on August 28 on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.

Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Ramesh Kumar and Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu, Bhim Sen Tuti visited the Bhagwati Nagar base camp and reviewed preparations, including arrangements for registration counters, RFID centres, accommodation, sanitation, healthcare and security, officials said.

Kumar said all necessary arrangements were being put in place at Bhagwati Nagar, which serves as the main base camp for pilgrims undertaking the annual yatra.

“The visit was aimed at reviewing preparedness on the ground and giving the final touch to the arrangements. Registration facilities, RFID services, health infrastructure and sanitation arrangements were thoroughly inspected,” he said.

The Divisional Commissioner said discussions were held with departments concerned to ensure timely completion of all works and smooth conduct of the pilgrimage.

Officials said Kumar had earlier fixed June 10 as the deadline for completion of various works, including whitewashing, setting up bus ticket booking counters, langars, cloakrooms, accommodation facilities, washrooms, power supply and lighting within and around the camp.

Directions were also issued for ensuring adequate drinking water, sanitation and langar facilities, setting up a convenience store, providing prepaid SIM cards and installing German hangars for pilgrims.

The Fire and Emergency Services Department was directed to conduct a comprehensive fire safety audit, while the Public Works Department was asked to blacktop roads in and around the camp. The Power Development Department was instructed to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply with adequate illumination and backup generators.

The IGP reviewed the deployment plan for security forces and stressed proper lighting at all lodgement centres and strict adherence to yatra cut-off timings.

Tuti also reviewed security and facilitation arrangements in Kathua and Samba districts, directing officers to maintain maximum alertness and strengthen surveillance measures along the Yatra route.

At Lakhanpur, the IGP inspected the base camp, lodgement centres and reception facilities, while reviewing security deployment, CCTV coverage, access control systems, frisking arrangements, traffic management and pilgrim amenities.

A security review meeting was later held at the District Police Lines in Kathua, where SSP Kathua Mohita Sharma briefed officers on surveillance measures, convoy management, deployment of Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and emergency response plans.

The IGP stressed strict adherence to security protocols and professional conduct with pilgrims, while DIG Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range Shridhar Patil directed officers to regularly inspect langars and lodgement centres and maintain close surveillance on suspicious elements.

In Samba district, SSP Anuj Kumar briefed the IGP on preparedness for the pilgrimage. During the review, Tuti emphasised close coordination among J-K Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), intelligence agencies and Punjab Police to ensure a safe and smooth Yatra.

Officers were directed to intensify drone surveillance, deploy dog squads for anti-sabotage checks at vital installations, langars and lodgement centres, and strengthen real-time monitoring systems.

They were also instructed to enhance security along the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway and border areas through round-the-clock domination, naka checking and area patrols.

LG Sinha gives emotional push to anti-drug campaign in J&K

LG Sinha gives emotional push to anti-drug campaign in J&K

Kulgam, June 01: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday gave an emotional and people-centric push to the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyaan, describing himself as “a member of your family” while assuring full support of the administration in the fight against drug addiction and narcotics abuse in Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing a public gathering at Laroo Bus Stand in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, the Lieutenant Governor said the anti-drug campaign launched 51 days ago has evolved into a mass public movement across Jammu and Kashmir, with active participation from families, youth, educational institutions, religious leaders and civil society groups.

“I stand before you as a member of your family to support your struggle and your dream of a safe, secure and Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir,” Sinha said while addressing the gathering..

The Lieutenant Governor said the campaign was no longer confined to government departments or law enforcement agencies, but had transformed into a collective social mission involving every section of society.

“With the support of the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir, a movement has taken shape that has united every street, every family and every heart with one common intention—to make our villages and cities free from drugs,” he said.

Referring to the beginning of the campaign, Sinha said what started as “a small spark of change” has now transformed into a larger social movement capable of changing the future of Jammu and Kashmir if people continue to remain united.

“Today I can confidently say that the spark of hope, courage and determination has been ignited across Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

The LG said Jammu and Kashmir has suffered for decades due to terrorism and violence, while drug addiction emerged as another serious threat affecting the younger generation.

“Jammu and Kashmir has endured unimaginable attacks of terrorism for many years. We also saw how drugs were slowly trapping our youth and weakening society,” he said.

Sinha recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan in 2020, following which Jammu and Kashmir intensified anti-drug efforts from 2021 onwards to protect the youth from the combined threats of terrorism and narcotics.

“We tried to remove the shadows of terrorism and drugs that were dividing our youth. Today, the chains that trapped our youth in the darkness of addiction are being broken one by one,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor said the Jammu and Kashmir Police, security agencies and civil administration jointly intensified anti-drug operations during the last 50 days under what he described as a “whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach.”

“With the support of the people, we have been able to identify and dismantle several drug networks. Strong action is being taken against those involved in the narcotics trade,” he said.

Sinha said he had observed a growing sense of confidence among the youth during the anti-drug campaign, asserting that many young people were now openly resisting narcotics abuse.

“In the last 51 days, I have seen confidence in the eyes of our youth. Society is standing up against this menace,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor appreciated the role of district administrations, schools, women’s groups, youth clubs, social organisations, religious leaders and political representatives in strengthening awareness against drugs at the grassroots level.

“Many families, schools, social and religious leaders and public representatives are united against drugs. The committees formed by district administrations, especially women’s committees and youth clubs, are playing a major role in this movement,” he said.

Stressing the humanitarian aspect of the issue, Sinha said drug-addicted youth should not be treated as criminals but as victims who deserve dignity, compassion and rehabilitation.

“The youth addicted to drugs have the right to live their lives with dignity. They should not be viewed as criminals. They are real victims and must be treated with respect, compassion and care,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor said rehabilitation infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir would be expanded and assured that modern de-addiction and rehabilitation centres would be established in every district at the earliest.

“The rehabilitation centres have to be expanded and the best facilities must be made available in every district as soon as possible,” he said.

Sinha said the administration had also framed a rehabilitation policy after consultations with experts from across the country to ensure proper treatment, emotional support and social reintegration for recovering addicts.

“In order to save the lives of those affected by addiction, both emotional and material support are necessary and every possible effort has to be made,” he said.

Highlighting the achievements of the anti-drug campaign so far, the Lieutenant Governor said that during the last 50 days, 923 FIRs had been registered under anti-narcotics operations across Jammu and Kashmir, while more than 1,000 drug peddlers had been arrested.

He said authorities had also detained over 56 major drug peddlers under preventive measures, while administrative action had been initiated against several others involved in the narcotics trade.

According to the LG, more than 600 driving licences linked to narcotics offenders have been suspended under the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), while 124 passport revocation cases have also been processed.

“The police are continuously acting against drug peddlers. This is a difficult and ongoing process,” he said.

Sinha acknowledged that the drug menace could not be completely eradicated within a short period but said the 100-day campaign was launched to create awareness and strengthen public participation against addiction.

“We know Jammu and Kashmir cannot become addiction-free in just 100 days. But this campaign was started to build awareness and strengthen the collective resolve of society so that people, police and administration work together against drugs,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor asserted that the anti-drug campaign would continue with full force until narcotics networks are completely uprooted from Jammu and Kashmir.

“As long as even one group involved in drugs exists in Jammu and Kashmir, this campaign will continue,” he added. —(KNO)

Technique, temperament still rule T20 cricket; Kohli proves it again: Sharma

Technique, temperament still rule T20 cricket; Kohli proves it again: Sharma

New Delhi, Jun 01: Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma believes the batting great’s IPL performance in the final was a timely reminder that technique and temperament remain as relevant as power-hitting in the shortest format.

Kohli once again delivered on the biggest stage as Royal Challengers Bengaluru defended their IPL title with a five-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday, extending his remarkable run of consistency in a format increasingly dominated by ultra-aggressive batting.

Kohli struck an unbeaten 75 off 42 balls, including nine fours and three sixes, as RCB chased down GT’s 155 for 8 in 18 overs.

Calling his former ward’s performance “excellent” and “brilliant”, Sharma said Kohli’s innings offered an important lesson for young cricketers.

“That is a lesson for the youngsters to understand that it’s not about power-hitting only, not about hitting sixes only. If you are good with the technique, you can always score big and that is what Virat showed today also,” Sharma told PTI Videos.

“If you have good technique, good temperament… that is what he has been doing for so long for his franchise as well as for Indian cricket. He has won so many matches for India showing this type of batting and he is an example for the youngsters to understand and learn how T20 cricket is played.”

Kohli’s latest title-winning effort came in a season in which he crossed the 600-run mark for the fourth consecutive year despite playing very little T20 cricket outside the IPL.

Sharma attributed that longevity to Kohli’s relentless drive and match-winning mindset.

“He has been a champion player. Everybody knows the amount of matches he has won for the country and that is why everybody admires him because he is a sort of player who likes to win matches on his own and he always keeps his team before himself.

“That is why he is the most loved cricketer in the world. He is the most loved cricketer in India. He is an inspiration for all the youngsters and he has been so consistent throughout his life,” he said.

With Kohli set to return to ODI cricket this month in the home series against Afghanistan, Sharma said the former India captain continues to set benchmarks through his fitness and professionalism.

“Virat Kohli has been preparing so well for himself and he has been an example. He is bringing that fitness mantra not only for the cricket community but for the whole country.

“He continues to inspire all Indian cricketers as well as all Indian people. He has shown by example what he does with his fitness and what he does with his intensity,” he said.
