Marriage assistance should not be linked to education: Minister Sakina Itoo

China warns its citizens against marrying Bangladeshi brides or buying a foreign wife

Srinagar, June 24: Social welfare Minister Sakina Masood Itoo on Tuesday said that marriages should not be tied to a person’s educational qualification and promised that the government will review an earlier order that set an eighth‑class qualification requirement for girls seeking financial assistance for their marriages.

Speaking to media persons in Srinagar, Sakina Itoo as per news agency JKNS said, “Marriage is a sacred and personal matter, and it should never be linked with education. This restriction was introduced two years ago under the LG‑led administration, making an eighth‑class pass mandatory for obtaining marriage aid. We disagreed with it then, and we disagree with it now.”

The minister said that such a restriction affects the economically weaker sections the most. “We have always believed that every girl has the right to marry with dignity, regardless of her academic background. Our priority is to uplift those who have been left behind due to poverty or other hardships, and this requirement contradicts that goal,” Itoo added.

She said, “Earlier, the marriage assistance was Rs. 50,000, and after Omar Abdullah became Chief Minister, it was increased to Rs. 75,000. This clearly shows the government’s commitment to making life better for economically weaker sections. We understand the struggles that families face, especially when it comes to marriages, and we are here to help.”

Sakina Itoo assured that the government will review the existing order and make necessary changes. “We will revisit the qualification requirement soon and remove any barriers that complicate the process. Our goal is to make sure that every girl can get married with respect and that every family receives the help it needs,” she said. (JKNS)

Israel-Iran war stretches into second week without diplomatic breakthrough

Dubai, Jun 24: Israel warned of Iranian attacks Tuesday morning hours after US President Donald Trump announced the two Middle Eastern countries had agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire.”

Israel’s Magen David Zafon rescue services said at least three people were killed and eight injured in the early morning barrage. A residential building in Israel’s south sustained heavy damage, according to emergency responders.

Waves of missiles sent Israelis to bomb shelters for almost two hours in Tuesday morning. (AP)

Iran strikes Israel with fresh missile attack hours after Trump’s ceasefire claim

Iran's UN ambassador says 78 people killed, over 320 injured in Israeli attacks

Tel Aviv, June 24: Hours after US President Donald Trump declared a ceasefire had been achieved, Israel sounded missile sirens and urged citizens to take shelter following new strikes launched from Iran.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed incoming missile threats, stating that defensive units were actively working to intercept them.

Emergency services reported that a ballistic missile had hit a building in Beersheba.

While no immediate injuries were recorded, Magen David Adom confirmed that teams had been deployed to the scene to assess the impact.

The missile barrage came shortly after Iran’s announcement that it had halted all military operations against Israel as of 4 a.m. local time.

However, Iranian authorities also clarified that their ceasefire was conditional — dependent on Israel ceasing its own military actions.

This apparent contradiction followed Trump’s assertion on his social media platform, Truth Social, that a ceasefire had been reached.

He made the claim after Iran fired missiles at US military bases in Qatar. Trump posted that both Israel and Iran had agreed to halt hostilities.

However, Tehran swiftly denied receiving any formal ceasefire agreement or proposal from the United States. Iran’s Foreign Minister reiterated that Israel had initiated the war and added that Tehran had paused its military operations from 4 a.m. local time, contingent on reciprocal de-escalation from Tel Aviv. Israel has not issued any official response to Trump’s ceasefire announcement.

The conflict between Iran and Israel, now in its 12th day, began after Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion,” targeting Iranian military and nuclear infrastructure.

Since then, the region has seen continuous missile exchanges between the two nations. Iran has reportedly suffered approximately 400 casualties, while Israel has recorded around 24 deaths.

The situation intensified further when the US entered the conflict, launching precision strikes on three major Iranian nuclear facilities –Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan — prompting heightened alerts across the Middle East.

Trump announces Israel-Iran ceasefire, but no confirmation yet from Tehran or Tel Aviv

12 US states sue Trump administration over 'illegal tariffs'

New Delhi, June 24: US President Donald Trump has declared that a “complete and total” ceasefire between Israel and Iran will take effect within hours, following nearly two weeks of escalating hostilities, reports BBC and CNN.

The announcement, made on social media, claims both nations have agreed to halt military operations, with a full cessation of conflict expected “upon the 24th hour.” However, as of now, neither Iran nor Israel has officially confirmed that a ceasefire has been agreed.

The announcement follows an uptick in regional tensions. Just hours earlier, Iran fired missiles at the US-run Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar in retaliation for American strikes on its nuclear sites over the weekend.

The Pentagon reported no casualties, and Qatari authorities confirmed that all incoming projectiles were intercepted. Doha strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “flagrant violation” of Qatari sovereignty.

President Trump described Iran’s retaliatory strikes as a “very weak” response and thanked Tehran for what he claimed was “early notice” of the attack.

According to US media reports including CNN citing unnamed officials, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani played a key mediating role in brokering the ceasefire. Qatar is believed to have engaged Iranian officials directly after missile attacks on US installations in the region.

Iranian state media has so far referred to Trump’s announcement merely as a “claim,” with no official statement from Tehran confirming any such agreement.

KEEMA demands action after fatal transformer blast in Budgam

Power supply affected in several Kashmir areas as KPDCL announces shutdown

Srinagar, June 23: The Kashmir Electrical Equipment Manufacturers Association (KEEMA) has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the recent transformer explosion in Budgam, which claimed one life and left several others critically injured.

In a statement, KEEMA extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and expressed solidarity with those injured, calling for justice, accountability, and immediate corrective measures.

Terming the incident a “man-made disaster” rather than an accident, KEEMA blamed the tragedy on systemic negligence and the continued use of substandard, uncertified electrical equipment. “Despite our repeated warnings to the government and the Power Development Department (PDD), non-compliant materials continue to be deployed, putting lives at risk,” said KEEMA President Raja Nayeem Ahmed.

According to the association, preliminary findings indicate that the transformer involved lacked valid ISI certification and had not undergone the mandatory quality checks. KEEMA described this as a case of “criminal negligence” and demanded the immediate registration of an FIR against both the installing agency and the supplier involved. “Those responsible must be booked under relevant provisions of Indian law. Continued silence from authorities is unacceptable,” the statement read.

KEEMA also highlighted that in its 50-year history, not a single mishap has occurred involving equipment certified by its member manufacturers. “This tragic incident underscores the danger of bypassing certified local suppliers in favour of uncertified and dubious alternatives,” the statement added.

Calling on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take urgent cognisance, KEEMA demanded a comprehensive, independent, and time-bound judicial inquiry into the blast to establish both individual and institutional culpability. It further called for strict enforcement of standards across the power sector to prevent future tragedies.

KEEMA reiterated its willingness to assist the government with technical expertise but emphasised that appeals alone are no longer sufficient. “This is not just a tragedy—it is a reckoning. Justice delayed is not only justice denied, it is death repeated,” the statement concluded.
