Saudi Arabia, Russia offer oil supply continuity for India amid Iran’s Hormuz uncertainty

Saudi Arabia, Russia offer oil supply continuity for India amid Iran's Hormuz uncertainty

New Delhi, June 23: For India, which reportedly holds crude reserves for 90 days, Saudi Arabia’s ability to reroute crude exports via the Red Sea offers a layer of supply continuity amid the Strait of Hormuz uncertainty, according to a report on Monday.

While India sources 18–20 per cent of its crude from Saudi Arabia, the Petroline-Yanbu corridor ensures that a significant portion of these volumes could still reach Indian refiners even if the Hormuz route is disrupted.

“Although some logistical constraints and higher freight costs may persist, Saudi’s diversified export infrastructure, combined with India’s flexible sourcing strategy, reduces the likelihood of a sharp supply shortfall from this key partner,” said the report from Yes Securities.

With Iran’s Parliament approving a potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz following US strikes on its nuclear sites, energy markets face rising disruption risk at the world’s most critical oil artery.

For India, which sources more than 35 per cent of crude and 42 per cent of LNG through the strait, the near-term threat lies in supply delays and freight escalation.

“However, India’s evolving import mix provides a strong cushion – Russian inflows (2.2 million barrels of oil per day, or mb/d, in June) now exceed combined Middle East supplies, and additions from the US, West Africa, and Latin America bypass Hormuz entirely,” the report contended.

India imports 5.5 mb/d of crude, with 2mb/d (over 35 per cent) from the Middle East transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite this logistical exposure, India’s crude sourcing strategy has materially evolved since 2022.

“Russian imports now exceed those from all Middle Eastern suppliers combined. Additions from the US (0.44mb/d), Brazil, West Africa, and even Latin America offer alternate routes bypassing Hormuz via the Suez, Cape of Good Hope, and Pacific Ocean. India could ensure that supplies increase from Russia, the US and others,” the report mentioned.

While fears of a total closure have resurfaced, historical precedent suggests that Iran is unlikely to fully blockade Hormuz.

Doing so would hurt its own crude exports (96 per cent routed via Kharg Island), alienate key partners like China (its largest buyer), and provoke coordinated military retaliation.

“Experts peg the probability of a full closure as ‘very low’, with likely scenarios involving short-lived disruptions (24-72 hours). However, these disruptions could still inject significant volatility, tighten tanker availability (already visible in the drop in Middle East and Gulf (MEG) bound empty tankers), and induce risk premiums in oil and product markets,” the report said.

Russian attacks on Ukraine kill 9, injure over dozen

Kyiv, June 23: A Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine’s capital overnight killed at least nine people and injured others, according to local officials, as rescue workers and firefighters sought to remove people they believed trapped under debris in a partially collapsed apartment building.

Elsewhere in Ukraine, a Russian short-range drone attack killed two people and wounded 10 more in the Chernihiv region late Sunday night, authorities said. According to the regional administration head, Viacheslav Chaus, three children were among the wounded.

Another person was killed and eight wounded overnight in the city of Bila Tserkva, around 85 kilometers (53 miles) southwest of the capital.

The strikes came nearly a week after a combined Russian attack on Ukraine last Tuesday killed 28 people in Kyiv, 23 of them in a residential building that collapsed after sustaining a direct hit by a missile. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called that attack one of the biggest bombardments of the war, now in its fourth year.

In the early hours of Monday, drones and missiles hit residential areas, hospitals and sports infrastructure in numerous districts across Kyiv, emergency services said, with the most severe damage occurring in the Shevchenkivskyi district, where one section of a five-story apartment building collapsed.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said six people were confirmed dead in the Shevchenkivskyi district. Ten others, including a pregnant woman, were rescued from a nearby high-rise that also sustained heavy damage in the blast.

Dozens of vehicles, some burned out and others mangled by flying debris from the blast, formed a snarl in the courtyard in front of the building, which had collapsed down to the second floor.

Onlookers, some wrapped in blankets, watched tearfully as the cleanup operation took place. Dozens of volunteers worked to remove broken glass, downed tree branches and other debris.

Klitschko told reporters from the scene that “we very much hope that the death toll will not increase,” but that rescue workers were still searching the collapsed building for further casualties.

Russia fired a total of 352 exploding drones and decoys overnight, Ukraine’s air force said. Russia also launched 11 ballistic missiles and five cruise missiles. Air defences intercepted or jammed 339 drones and 15 missiles before they could reach their targets, the statement said.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defences shot down 23 Ukrainian drones overnight into Monday.

Sangarwani Pulwama locality forced to drink contaminated water

Pulwama, Jun 22: Residents of Khan Mohalla, an outlying village in the Sangarwani area of Pulwama district, are being forced to consume turbid piped water, raising serious health concerns among them.

According to residents, the water is being supplied directly from a nearby stream without any filtration.

Mohammad Ayoub Khan, a resident, said the Jal Shakti Department has laid a 4-inch pipeline to supply the untreated water to households. “We have long been demanding filtered water from the nearby Kandipathri supply scheme,” Khan said.

Another resident recalled that the area was previously supplied water through the same pipeline but locals had stopped using it due to its high turbidity.

“We used that water only for laundry. Eventually, we completely abandoned it and demanded connections from Kandipathri,” he said.

However, to the residents’ dismay, the Jal Shakti Department recently reconnected the same old pipeline instead of providing filtered water.

Locals allege that the consumption of contaminated water has led to a surge in waterborne diseases in the past, including jaundice, in the area.

They appealed to the authorities to intervene and ensure a safe and filtered water supply to the village.

J&K pensioners protest in Ganderbal for long-pending demands

Ganderbal, June 23: Members of the Jammu and Kashmir Pensioners United Front on Monday held a peaceful protest in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, demanding immediate redressal of their long-pending issues, including restoration of benefits under the 8th Pay Commission and an increase in medical allowance.

Scores of elderly pensioners assembled and raised slogans urging the government to address their grievances. The protesting retired employees, many of whom served the government for over three decades, said they feel neglected and forgotten after retirement.

“We demand the restoration of all benefits due under the 8th Pay Commission. The government must also enhance the meagre medical allowance from Rs 300 to at least Rs 1000,” said one of the protesting pensioners. “Rs 300 in today’s time is a joke. It doesn’t even cover a basic doctor consultation, let alone treatment or medicines.”

Another key demand raised during the protest was the implementation of 5% additional pension every five years after the age of 65, similar to what is provided in many other states and under central government norms. The pensioners said this incremental support becomes crucial as age-related ailments and expenses increase with time.

“These are genuine demands. We are not asking for luxuries but for dignity in old age. After giving a lifetime to the service of the people, this is the least we expect,” said a retired teacher who joined the protest.

The demonstrators appealed to the government to take immediate steps and initiate a dialogue with the pensioners’ body to resolve their issues in a time-bound manner.

“We will be forced to intensify our agitation across all districts if our voices continue to be ignored,” warned one of the organisers. [KNT]

JP Nadda pays tribute to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on death anniversary

"Opposed special status given to J-K": JP Nadda pays tribute to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on death anniversary

New Delhi, June 23: Union Minister and BJP national president JP Nadda paid floral tribute to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his death anniversary at the BJP Headquarters in New Delhi.

Syama Prasad Mookerjee was the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the ideological parent organisation of the BJP. He also served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet.

Addressing party workers, Nadda highlighted Mookerjee’s contributions to India’s unity and questioned the circumstances of his death in 1953.

“Due to ideological differences and the appeasement policy of Dr Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee resigned from his cabinet, and later he was among the founding members of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. He opposed the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir,” Nadda said.
Mookerjee, a staunch advocate for a united India, protested against Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Nadda stated that Mookerjee died under mysterious circumstances in Srinagar jail in 1953, and despite demands for an inquiry from his party and his mother, there was none.

“He died mysteriously in Srinagar jail on 23 June 1953. At that time, Bharatiya Jana Sangh was very small. We raised our voice. The opposition said that there should be an inquiry. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s mother also wrote a letter to Jawaharlal Nehru saying that there should be an inquiry about this, but it was not heard,” he stated.

Meanwhile, lauding Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s efforts on his death anniversary, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday said that the Jana Sangh founder roared like a lion and gave the slogan of ‘Ek Vidhan, Ek Samvidhan’.

The Delhi CM asserted that Dr Mookerjee pioneered India’s fight for its integrity even after independence. She mentioned that Syama Prasad Mookerjee gave the slogan “Ye Kashmir Hamara Hai” and didn’t favour the concept of its separate constitution.

“The person who started the fight for the unity and integrity of the nation. There was a time when lakhs of freedom fighters lost their lives and struggled to make India independent. Even after India became independent, if there was any pioneer in the fight for the country’s integrity, then it was Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The one who roared like a lion and said that there will only be ‘Ek Vidhan, Ek Samvidhan’ in one country, ‘Do Vidhan Do Samvidhan’ will not work”, the Delhi CM said while addressing the event.

According to the BJP’s official website, on the issue of the Delhi pact with Liaquat Ali Khan, Mookerjee resigned from the Cabinet on April 6, 1950. Later, on October 21, 1951, Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in Delhi and became its first president.

Mookerjee went to visit Kashmir in 1953 and was arrested on May 11. He died there under detention on June 23, 1953.

Army soldier, associate arrested in Jammu over espionage links to ISI

J&K Police arrest six persons for spreading misleading information on social media platforms

Srinagar, June 23: In a continuing effort to bust espionage rings operating in the country, Punjab police arrested two persons—an army personnel and his civilian associate—over their alleged links to Pakistan’s intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), in Jammu, media reports said.

According to a police official, the arrested soldier has been identified as Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Dhariwal in Amritsar, who is currently serving in the Indian Army in Jammu. His associate, Sahil Masih, also hails from Dhariwal. The two were arrested during an intelligence-led operation, while allegedly attempting to hand over sensitive data.

As per Gaurav Yadav, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP), the preliminary investigation revealed that Gurpreet Singh was in direct contact with ISI operatives and is suspected to have shared sensitive and classified military information via pen drives and discs. Two mobile phones containing virtual numbers used for communication with ISI handlers have been recovered from the duo, media reports quoted Yadav as saying.

Maninder Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police (Amritsar Rural), said that Gurpreet Singh, who joined the Army in 2016, allegedly exploited his official position to gather and transmit military secrets. The operation is believed to have been facilitated by a Dubai-based drug trafficker named Arjan, originally from Dhariwal, who allegedly introduced Gurpreet to ISI operatives about five months ago.

Since then, Gurpreet reportedly engaged in systematic surveillance, data theft, and physical data drops at pre-decided locations. The accused is said to have received monetary compensation through a complex web of financial transactions routed via friends, relatives, and foreign associates to avoid detection.

Police believe that the key handler on the Pakistani side has been identified as Rana Javed. Further investigations are underway to uncover the broader espionage-terror network and identify other collaborators, according to the police.

A case has been registered at Lopoke Police Station in Amritsar under relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The US bombed three major nuclear sites — Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan — in Iran, bringing itself into the Israel-Iran conflict.
