Meats to have detailed labels

Srinagar, Oct 4: The J&K Commissioner of Food Safety Saturday issued an order that prohibits the manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation, and sale of frozen and chilled meat products that fail to meet safety standards.

The detailed order comes two months after the Food Safety Department discovered and destroyed 1200 kg of substandard packaged meat, the seizure proving to be the tip of an iceberg.

The ‘Prohibitory Order’ states that adequate grounds exist after inspection findings that a “health risk condition” exists across J&K, requiring immediate preventive action in the interest of public health.

It spells out ongoing violations uncovered during recent inspections.

Despite existing regulations under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, widespread violations and overall unacceptable conditions of frozen meat and meat products have been reported by the department.

Over the past two months, large quantities of rotten, decomposed, and unlabeled meat have been seized and destroyed across Kashmir and Jammu divisions.

The ban includes improper labeling, storage temperatures, and shelf-life guidelines.

Section 30 of the FSSAI 2006 empowers the commissioner to prohibit hazardous practices in the interest of public safety.

The department said that the ban has been issued to ensure safer meat options for people of J&K.

With the dint of the order, meat product that is not labeled properly, not stored in the safe and specified temperature conditions, and do not having detailed source and destination information can be confiscated at the entry points into J&K.

The meat packages are also required to have an FSSAI license number and FSSAI logo.

It must also have the mandatory information on the animal that is the source of the meat: goat, chicken, and buffalo.

Frozen meat must be kept at minus 18 degrees Celsius or below to prevent microbial growth, and chilled meat must be stored at 0 to 4 degrees Celsius for short-term handling.

In addition, no meat can be sold beyond 12 months from its freezing date.

Online sellers must ensure that their products have at least 70 percent of their shelf life remaining.

All meat and meat products must have a prominent non-vegetarian sign on the package.

The prohibitory order has been communicated to various departments that form the core of ensuring compliance with food safety.

The department officials said that Police and other officials who check incoming goods and produce at entry points can also check for the violations listed in the prohibitory order and take necessary action.

The food business operators, like restaurants and consumers, have been advised to stay vigilant and check their meat supply before purchase.

“If the meat package lacks any of the information that is mandatory as per FSSAI 2006, it is unfit for consumption. Moreover, the storage and transport conditions of meats must also be inspected regularly by the FBOs,” the officials said.

Responding to a post by the Modi Archive handle on X, the Prime Minister wrote: “This thread highlights a very satisfying effort undertaken about two decades ago, thus fulfilling a wish of Shyamji Krishna Varma and honouring a courageous son of Maa Bharti. May more youngsters read about his greatness and bravery!” PM Modi said the repatriation was a historic initiative that honoured the memory of a “courageous son of Maa Bharti” and reaffirmed India’s resolve to preserve the legacy of its freedom movement. The Prime Minister also expressed hope that more young Indians would read about Shyamji Krishna Varma’s fearless pursuit of justice and his unwavering dedication to India’s independence struggle.

Jammu-Srinagar highway blocked after rains trigger mudslides

Ramban, Oct 4: The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH-44) remained open for one-way traffic on Saturday, with heavy vehicles allowed towards Srinagar and light to medium vehicles permitted towards Jammu. Traffic, however, moved slowly due to uneven road surfaces, single-lane operations, and additional obstructions.

Traffic authorities cited the Tharad stretch in Udhampur district as particularly challenging, with ongoing repair and blacktopping work covering 250–300 metres. Slow-moving nomadic families with livestock and occasional vehicle breakdowns further added to congestion.

Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) expressed hope that road work could be completed in the next few days if weather conditions remain favourable, easing traffic for commuters and goods transporters.

The Traffic Department issued a public advisory urging travellers not to move against the traffic schedule and to check the latest road status before starting their journey. Updates are available via Traffic Control Units in Jammu, Srinagar, Udhampur, and Ramban, and on the official social media channels of J&K Traffic Police.

NH-44 remains the vital lifeline connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of the country, and authorities have appealed for public cooperation to ensure safe and smooth movement during ongoing repair operations.

Health industry bodies welcome CGHS’ move to revise rates after 15 years

Cabinet approves expansion of PG, UG medical education capacity

New Delhi, Oct 04: Health industry bodies have welcomed the central government’s decision to revise the package rates for nearly 2,000 medical procedures under the Central Govt Health Scheme (CGHS).

The revised rates, announced on Oct 3, will come into effect from Oct 13.

“This reform, along with the earlier GST relief, reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and addressing long-standing concerns of the sector,” said Ameera Shah, President, NATHEALTH, in a statement.

CGHS is a vital programme for millions of beneficiaries, and the revised rates will improve access to safe and effective healthcare while enhancing system efficiency.

Earlier, the Association of Healthcare Providers of India (AHPI) called the revision “a long-awaited step”.

The last package was fixed in 2014, with only a minor update in 2024. This left hospitals and patients struggling for more than a decade with a gap between actual treatment costs and prescribed package rates.

The new policy would directly benefit both healthcare providers and CGHS beneficiaries, the AHPI said.

The revised framework applies to the CGHS cardholders in all categories, with semi-private rooms defined as two to four patients forming the base for package rates, and general wards accommodating up to 10 patients.

The rates will also vary based on city tiers, with tier-I cities applying the base rate, tier-II cities — including Chandigarh, Jalandhar and Ludhiana — set at a 19 per cent lower rate, and Tier 3 cities set at a 20 per cent lower rate.

Further, accreditation status will also determine rates, with non-NABH hospitals receiving a 15 per cent lower rate than NABH hospitals, while the super-speciality hospitals with over 200 beds will be entitled to 15 per cent higher rates than the NABH hospitals.

Building on the momentum, NATHEALTH suggested that CGHS and other government-sponsored schemes be periodically benchmarked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

“This will ensure predictability, sustainability, and a win-win value proposition for patients, providers, and policymakers,” Shah said.
