'I Love Muhammad' row: JK BJP leader threatens resignation, says UP CM's remarks unacceptable

Jammu, Oct 03: Jammu and Kashmir BJP leader Jahanzaib Sirwal on Friday threatened to resign from the party, citing Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s “unacceptable” remarks and the state police’s “vindictive” attitude against the Muslim community.

The situation in Uttar Pradesh goes against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas’. It betrays this ethos through “baseless legal actions, heavy-handed crackdown and divisive threats”, he said in a statement.

He said impartial investigations must hold all wrongdoers accountable and not just one community.

When contacted by PTI, Sirwal said he will have no other option but to resign if the BJP fails to take any action to restore the confidence of Muslims.

In Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, police filed an FIR against 24 people for allegedly installing boards reading “I Love Muhammad” during an Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi procession on September 4.

Clashes broke out in Bareilly on September 26 after a large crowd carrying posters reading “I Love Muhammad” assembled outside a mosque in the Kotwali area after Friday prayers.

In a major crackdown, police arrested 68 people, including a local cleric, in connection with the violence. CM Adityanath has warned of strict action against any attempt to disturb law and order.

In his statement, Sirwal said he stands as a proud Muslim and a committed leader of the BJP, who is deeply pained by the recent actions of the Uttar Pradesh government, which has “targeted” the Muslim community’s expression of devotion through the “I Love Muhammad” banner.

“What was a simple, heartfelt act of faith has been met with FIRs, detentions and inflammatory rhetoric, including Adityanath’s remarks about ‘denting-painting’ and teaching lessons to generations.

“Such statements are not only divisive but also an affront to the constitutional right under Article 25 to freely practice and profess one’s religion. They undermine the spirit of India, where every faith should flourish without fear,” the BJP leader said.

He said the UP CM has no right to “threaten or intimidate” any community into silence.

“His provocative rhetoric, implying coercive corrections of our faith’s expressions, is a betrayal of democratic values and an insult to the Constitution, which stands supreme over any individual’s authority. We, as Muslims, will not bow to such threats nor will we allow our sacred love for the Prophet to be criminalised,” he said.

Sirwal said that as a Muslim BJP leader, he cannot remain silent when his community’s rights are trampled and when the state’s actions risk tarnishing the party’s commitment to unity.

“I urge the BJP leadership to act decisively: quash the unjust FIRs, release those detained for peaceful expressions and retract statements that fuel discord. The central leadership must intervene to ensure no chief minister wields state power to suppress constitutional freedoms.

“If these actions reflect the party’s stance, I humbly accept expulsion, for my ‘Iman’ (faith) will always stand above all else. But I believe in our party’s commitment to justice and unity, and I call for a course correction to uphold India’s pluralistic soul,” he said.

He asked Muslims to seek justice through dialogue, democratic means and unwavering faith.

Highlighting the need for communal harmony in the country, Sirwal said, “Let us build bridges, not barriers, for our nation’s strength lies in its diversity.”

Fire Service aspirants stage protest in Srinagar against recruitment fraud, seek justice and accountability

On Teacher's Day, educators knock CM's door in protest over award snub

Srinagar, Oct 03: Scores of aspirants who had applied for jobs in the Fire and Emergency Services Department staged a protest in Srinagar on Friday, demanding justice and accountability in what they described as a long-pending recruitment fraud. The protesters alleged that despite repeated assurances from authorities, including a promise by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, no substantial action has been taken for more than a decade.

The candidates raised slogans against what they termed as systemic negligence in addressing the scam that deprived meritorious youth of government jobs. They carried placards demanding an impartial investigation and strict punishment for those responsible for tampering with the recruitment lists.

“We have been on the streets again and again, yet nothing concrete has been done. For the last 12 years, we have been waiting for justice. Many of us have crossed the upper age limit and lost hope for any government employment. This is not only fraud but also a grave injustice,” one of the protesting aspirants told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.

The candidates recalled that when they had raised the issue earlier, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had assured them that justice would be delivered. “LG sahib had himself promised us that action would follow and the guilty would be punished. But months and years have passed, and we are still waiting for that promise to be fulfilled,” another aspirant said.

According to the protesters, the recruitment process in the Fire and Emergency Services Department has remained mired in allegations of manipulation and irregularities for over a decade. They alleged that undeserving candidates were accommodated through fraudulent means while genuine aspirants were sidelined.

“What pains us the most is that this case is not new. It has been under public discussion for more than twelve years. Successive governments ignored it, and now even under the present administration, nothing has been done despite repeated commitments,” one of the aggrieved job seekers said.

The candidates urged the government to take immediate steps by constituting an independent inquiry committee or handing the case over to an anti-corruption agency for thorough investigation. They said unless the guilty are punished, public faith in the recruitment system will remain shattered. [KNT]

Putin orders government to soften trade imbalance with India

Moscow, Oct 03: Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his anticipation for his upcoming visit to India in early December and has ordered the government to devise measures to soften the trade imbalance with India due to the heavy import of crude by New Delhi.

Speaking at the international Valdai discussion forum of security and geopolitical experts from 140 countries, including India, in the Black Sea resort of Sochi in South Russia on Thursday evening, Putin underlined that Russia and India have never had any problems or tensions between them and always took actions by keeping in view their sensitivities.

“We have never had any problems or interstate tensions with India. Never,” the Russian leader noted.

Putin highlighted the “special” nature of Russia-India relations since the days of the Soviet Union, when India was fighting for its independence. “In India, they remember this, they know it, and they value it. We appreciate that India has not forgotten it,” he declared.

He referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as his friend, noting that he feels comfortable in their trustworthy interactions.

Putin lauded India’s nationalist government led by Modi, calling him a “balanced, wise”, and “nationally oriented” leader.

He remarked, “Everyone in India knows this well,” particularly regarding India’s decision to ignore US pressure to halt oil imports from Russia.

“The losses faced by India due to punitive US tariffs would be balanced by crude imports from Russia, plus it will gain prestige as a sovereign nation,” Putin said.

He said that to remove the trade imbalance, Russia may buy more agricultural products and medicines from India. “More agricultural products may be purchased from India. Certain steps can be undertaken from our side for medicinal products, pharmaceuticals,” Putin stated.

He noted the vast potential for economic cooperation between Russia and India but acknowledged the need to resolve specific issues to fully unlock these opportunities.

“We need to solve the whole range of tasks to unlock our opportunities and potential advantages,” Putin said, identifying financing, logistics and payment bottlenecks as key concerns.

Putin also recalled that the declaration of a special strategic privileged partnership between Russia and India will soon celebrate its 15th anniversary, declaring, “That’s what it really is.”

He noted that, in their political relations, Russia and India almost always coordinate their actions.

“We always hear and take into account the positions of our countries on various key issues. Our foreign ministries work very closely together,” Putin said.

Additionally, he welcomed the idea of a joint fund to develop AI and other cutting-edge technology proposed by Dr Arvind Gupta, Director General of New Delhi-based Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF), who was attending the Sochi forum.

Kupwara Admin issues weather, urges public to stay alert

Bandipora, Oct 03: The district administration in Bandipora on Friday issued a weather advisory cautioning people about heavy snowfall, rainfall, and associated hazards in the coming days. The advisory has raised particular concern for the higher reaches of the district, including Razdan Pass, where heavy snow is expected. Mid-elevations are likely to receive light snowfall while the plains may witness moderate rainfall.

The administration has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and strong winds with speeds ranging between 40 and 70 kilometres per hour. Officials said that such conditions could disrupt farming and orchard activities, damage infrastructure, and pose serious risks to travellers.

In its appeal, the district administration urged the public to avoid travel to higher reaches and to confirm road status before attempting journeys towards Gurez. It specifically advised against night travel on hilly roads and requested farmers and orchardists to suspend their work between October 5 and 7. The advisory further underlined that people, particularly children and the elderly, should remain indoors as far as possible until the weather stabilises.

To ensure public safety, emergency helplines have been activated. People in distress can reach out to the District Control Room on 7006630771 or the Police Control Room on 9596767430. Authorities said that strict monitoring of the situation will continue and that further instructions will be issued depending on the developments.

The administration has called upon the people of Bandipora to cooperate fully, remain cautious, and follow all updates to avoid untoward incidents during the spell of inclement weather. [KNT]

Eight slapped with NSA for last year’s communal riots in Bahraich

Seven hardcore criminals held with weapons in Samba: Police

Bahraich, Oct 3: The district administration here has invoked the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against eight accused in connection with the communal violence that erupted during a Durga idol immersion procession here last year.

A formal notification of the order issued by District Magistrate Akshay Tripathi on September 30 was shared by police through a statement on Thursday.

According to the statement issued by Bahraich Superintendent of Police (SP) Ram Nayan Singh, the communal violence in October 2024 resulted in the death of a Hindu youth.

The eight accused against whom the NSA has been invoked are Maroof Ali, Nankau, Mohammad Fahim, Mohammad Afzal, Mohammad Zeeshan, Javed, Shoeb Khan and Saif Ali.

All of them have been in jail since last year.

The action was taken based on reports from police officers and the recommendation of the SP “with the objective of maintaining law and order, public peace, and public safety in the district”, the statement said.

The violence broke out on October 13, 2024, over playing of music on a DJ system during a Durga idol immersion procession in the Maharajganj area of Mahsi sub-division.

During the clashes, 22-year-old Ramgopal Mishra was shot dead and several people were injured. The mob caused extensive damage, setting ablaze houses, shops, a hospital, motorcycles and cars.

This year, the Durga idol immersion processions are scheduled for Friday.

More anti-riot troops deployed in POK as protests rage

New Delhi, Oct 03: More troops poured into the streets of Muzaffarabad and the surroundings of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) on Friday morning to prevent further unrest after days of violent anti-government protests continued.

AFP and AP news agencies reported that the demonstrations, led by the joint Awami Action Committee (AAC), began on Monday over soaring electricity prices, lack of healthcare, and lavish perks enjoyed by ruling politicians. The protests quickly escalated into violent clashes with security forces, leaving nine people dead — six civilians and three policemen — according to a government statement cited by AFP. More than 170 police officers and at least 50 civilians were injured, though protest organisers claim over 100 civilian casualties.

An internet and mobile phone blackout has been imposed across the mountainous region, with local media warned not to cover the unrest. AFP reporters described scenes of devastation in Muzaffarabad on Wednesday, with streets “stained with blood and littered with spent bullet casings, shards of glass and scattered stones.”

Security forces have responded with tear gas and heavy deployment in the city. At the height of the protests, thousands of locals joined marches, chanting anti-government slogans and torching government buildings. Markets and schools remained shut, while protesters accused police of firing directly at demonstrators and harassing journalists. Funerals and sporadic fresh demonstrations continued into Thursday despite the crackdown.

The protests are among the largest in recent years in PoK. The unrest has been spearheaded by the Awami Joint Action Committee (AJAC), a coalition of local groups that has enforced road blockades and a shutdown since Monday, AP reported. The alliance has drawn comparisons to movements in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan, where civil rights activists have rallied against Islamabad’s dominance. As Friday afternoon prayers approached, security forces increased their vigil and patrols across POK to deter fresh rallies.

3 policemen killed, dozens injured in PoK clashes

Atleast 12 civilians killed in firing, clashes amid huge PoK protests

Islamabad, Oct 2: At least three police personnel were killed and dozens injured in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as the region witnessed a strike for the second consecutive day, according to media reports on Wednesday.

The strike, called by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC) over the issue of its unfulfilled charter of demands, saw simultaneous protests by rival groups, which accused each other of fomenting violence during an otherwise peaceful demonstration.

Geo News reported that the federal government once again offered negotiations to the JKJAAC amid ongoing protests, which claimed the lives of three police personnel and injured over 100. It was not clear if all the injured were police personnel or also included some civilians.

Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry told reporters on Wednesday that “90 per cent of the committee’s demands have already been accepted… federal ministers stand as guarantors to ensure implementation of these demands.”

The channel reported that shops, hotels, and commercial centres across Muzaffarabad remained closed, while public transport disappeared from the roads. Although schools were officially open, classrooms were largely empty as students stayed home.

The JKPAAC has issued a 38-point charter of demands, including ending 12 reserved seats for refugees and rolling back “privileges of the elite”, The News reported.

Addressing a press conference along with PoK “Prime Minister” Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, Fazal explained that two demands, including abolishing seats reserved for refugees in the Legislative Assembly and reducing the number of ministers, required constitutional amendments.

The minister emphasised that the government was still willing to negotiate openly on these two points.

Chaudhry slammed the action committee for taking the protest into a dead end, warning that protests would not deliver results nor provide a solution.

“We do not want violence…, nor do we want our enemy to benefit from it,” Chaudhry said, as he urged the action committee members to sit down for dialogue.

He revealed that 12 hours of negotiations had already taken place, resulting in a written agreement. Action committee members, he said, had also sought corrections in the document, which were accepted.

Despite this, Chaudhry said, the action committee resumed protests on September 29, which were unnecessary.

Meanwhile, PoK premier Haq stressed that negotiations were the only civilised way to resolve disputes and insisted there was no benefit to continuing protests.

Haq confirmed that three policemen had been killed and more than one hundred injured in the unrest, including eight critically wounded. He said the government placed equal value on the lives of both police and civilians.

He added that the government was ready to resume talks from the point where they had stalled, and cabinet members were present in Muzaffarabad and Rawalakot for the purpose.

He urged the action committee to stop agitation and return to the negotiation table, warning that inciting people through citizens would only push matters towards anarchy.

He further said that the incidents, including the burning of a school building during protests, demonstrated why dialogue was essential.

“Public rights are buried where human lives are lost,” Haq said.

Earlier, Dawn newspaper reported that at least one person was killed and over a dozen others injured — including a policeman — in PoK on Monday, as the region observed a shutdown and wheel-jam strike amid a communications blackout.

Mobile and internet services have remained suspended in PoK since Sunday noon, and sources said the curbs could continue.

Reports also suggested that similar protests were staged in Rawalakot and Sudhnoti, while in Bhimber, a rally was led by Haq’s brother, Ehsanul Haq, who is associated with the PTI of Imran Khan.

A high-level federal government delegation rushed to Muzaffarabad on Thursday, following Sharif’s instructions, to hold talks with the protestors in an effort to end the unrest in the region.

The development came following a three-day strike by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC), prompted by the failure of the talks between the JKJAAC, representatives of PoK and the federal government to address the issues raised by the protesters.

Hours later, the committee led by former Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf reached Muzaffarabad to meet the representatives of the JKJAAC, a body of traders, local leaders and civil society, protesting to force the authorities to meet its demands.

It has issued a 38-point charter of demands, including ending 12 reserved seats for refugees and rolling back “privileges of the elite”.

Other members of the delegation included federal ministers Sardar Yusuf and Ahsan Iqbal, Amir Muqam, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, Senator Rana Sanaullah, former minister Qamar Zaman Kaira and former PoK “President” Masood Khan.

“A high-level delegation from Pakistan started formal dialogue with representatives of the Joint Action Committee” in Muzaffarabad today, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry posted on social media. No further details have been shared about the outcome of talks.

Meanwhile, expressing “deep concern over the unfortunate incidents during the protests”, PM Sharif ordered a transparent investigation into the matter, his office said in a statement.

Mughal Road set for transformation with NH-701A

Landslide blocks Mughal Road near Ratta Chamb, traffic disrupted

Rajouri, Oct 2: To enhance connectivity between Kashmir and Jammu regions, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) recently approved a major highway project – National Highway-701A.

The project, aimed at providing an alternate all-weather route to the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, would follow the alignment of the historic Mughal Road, underscoring its strategic importance.

Officials from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) said that the highway project was already in its initial pre-start stage.

“Work on preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is actively underway, with teams assessing field conditions and finalising the alignment of the planned highway stretch,” officials said.

They said that this groundwork would determine the most feasible route and engineering specifications to ensure the road meets modern highway standards.

Simultaneously, authorities are preparing to initiate the land acquisition process.

Under current regulations, 90 percent of land acquisition must be completed before the commencement of construction.

BRO officials said that once the DPR is finalised, it would be submitted to MoRTH for tendering, paving the way for the formal start of construction activities.

The proposed NH-701A would originate from Magam in central Kashmir’s Budgam district and extend up to Surankote in Poonch, effectively covering the existing Mughal Road alignment.

A key feature of the plan is the construction of a 10-km tunnel from Chata Paani in Poonch to the Shopian side.

This tunnel, a long-standing demand of residents and stakeholders, is expected to transform the Mughal Road into an all-weather route, ensuring uninterrupted movement of essential supplies and passenger traffic even during harsh winters and frequent landslides.

Officials and local stakeholders believe the project would not only improve regional connectivity but also boost economic activities across the Pir Panjal region, providing a dependable alternative to the frequently disrupted Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
