The first-ever freight train carrying cement successfully reached the Anantnag goods shed in south Kashmir from Rupnagar in Punjab on August 9, marking a significant milestone in connecting the Kashmir region to the national freight network.

Jammu, Oct 1: The Northern Railway on Wednesday dispatched the first automobile rake ferrying 116 vehicles from Manesar in Haryana to south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

The first-ever freight train carrying cement successfully reached the Anantnag goods shed in south Kashmir from Rupnagar in Punjab on August 9, marking a significant milestone in connecting the Kashmir region to the national freight network.

“The first automobile rake has been dispatched by Northern Railways from Maruti Suzuki India Limited in-plant Gati Shakti Terminal (GCT) at Manesar to Anantnag Goods Shed in the Kashmir valley today,” Railways PRO, Jammu division, said.

The auto train, carrying over 116 passenger vehicles, including Brezza, Dzire, WagonR and S-Presso, departed from Manesar at 12.35 pm on Wednesday and will cover a distance of 850 kilometres in about 45 hours.

“It is scheduled to reach the newly opened Anantnag railway terminal at 10:00 hours on October 3,” he said.

On its way to Anantnag, the train will pass over the world’s highest railway arch bridge across the Chenab river, he added.

Officials said rail connectivity to the valley under the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project has strengthened regional connectivity, improved logistics efficiency and eased road congestion significantly.

Since August 9, several freight trains carrying the Army’s winter stock, fruits and other items have reached Kashmir from various destinations and returned with goods including fruits.

Israeli Navy intercepts aid flotilla to Gaza; Colombia expels last Israeli diplomat

Israeli Navy intercepts aid flotilla to Gaza; Colombia expels last Israeli diplomat

New Delhi, Oct 2: The Israeli navy has intercepted a flotilla of aid boats headed towards Gaza, detaining hundreds of activists on board, among them Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, reports BBC.

The operation marks the third time this year that Israel has blocked attempts by international groups to deliver humanitarian supplies to Gaza after previous flotillas in June and July were also turned back.

The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), consisting of 44 boats supported by international activists, politicians, and aid groups, had been sailing under heavy monitoring before the interception.

Organisers said their mission was backed by civil society networks across Europe, North Africa, and Latin America, with support demonstrations held in Greece, Italy, Tunisia, and Turkey as the vessels advanced towards Gaza.

Israel said its navy diverted the ships because they were approaching a combat zone and violating the naval blockade. Several vessels, including the Alma, Surius and Adara, were boarded at sea, while others were reportedly struck by water cannons.

The GSF alleged that one vessel was deliberately rammed and accused Israeli forces of jamming communications to block distress signals and livestreams, reports BBC. The flotilla was about 70 nautical miles from Gaza’s shoreline at the time of the intervention.

While Israel has described the flotilla as a political provocation, aid agencies argue it is part of wider efforts to break Israel’s restrictions on food, fuel and medicine entering Gaza.

A UN-backed group last month confirmed famine conditions in the territory, blaming what it called Israel’s “systematic obstruction” of aid. Israel and the US have instead promoted the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an alternative distribution channel rejected by the UN as unethical.

The interception triggered a wave of diplomatic fallout. Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced the expulsion of Israel’s last remaining diplomats in Bogotá, ending all diplomatic presence.

He also scrapped a free trade agreement with Israel and demanded the release of two Colombian nationals aboard the flotilla. Ireland, France, and Italy confirmed their citizens and parliamentarians were among those detained, with Dublin warning Israel to uphold international law.

Israel’s military insists those intercepted are “safe and healthy.” But the incident comes as Israel intensifies its ground offensive in Gaza City and as Hamas weighs its response to a new US-backed ceasefire proposal.

Atleast 12 civilians killed in firing, clashes amid huge PoK protests

Srinagar, Oct 1: The number of civilians killed rose to 12 after a third consecutive day of violent protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) against the Pakistani government, NDTV reported.

At least four people were killed in Dhirkot in Bagh district, sources told NDTV, while at least two others died in Muzaffarabad and two in Mirpur, while over 200 civilians have been injured.

Three policemen have also died in the clashes, and at least nine have been injured.

As per the NDTV, PoK has been wracked by massive protests – led by the Joint Awami Action Committee over the ‘denial of fundamental rights’ – in the past 72 hours, including a complete shutdown of markets, shops, and local businesses, as well as a halt on transport services.

Protestors threw stones and large shipping containers – strategically placed on bridges to block their march on Muzaffarabad – were tossed into the river below, it said.

The news network said visuals showed dozens of protesters uniting to push them off the bridge.

Sources said the JAAC has blamed the Muzaffarabad deaths on Pak Rangers opening fire, and the others on heavy shelling by Pak security forces, including the Army, on civilians.

The protesters – whose ‘long march’ on Muzaffarabad continues despite the crackdown – have 38 demands, which include abolition of 12 seats in the PoK Assembly reserved for Kashmiri refugees living in Pakistan. Locals argue this undermines representative governance.

PTI Adds:

Meanwhile, a British parliamentary group has written to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to raise serious concerns over the “escalating situation” in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), highlighting reports of a total communications blackout in the region.

The chair of the Kashmir All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), Imran Hussain, posted a letter on social media on Tuesday to bring the protests and lockdown in the region to the attention of FCDO Minister in charge of Pakistan, Hamish Falconer.

The Mirpuri heritage Labour MP for Bradford East says in the letter that the communications blackout had caused deep anxiety among many of his constituents who have family in PoK.

“Reports from the ground indicate a total communication blackout, including the suspension of mobile, internet, and landline services across the region,” Hussain’s letter reads.

Postage stamp on RSS is insult to Constitution: CPI (M) Polit Bureau

CPI(M) urges stern action against harassment, vicious campaigns targeting Kashmiris across India

New Delhi, Oct 1: The release of a postage stamp and a 100 rupee coin by the Prime Minister to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the RSS is a grave injury and insult to the Constitution of India which the RSS has never accepted, the Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has said in a statement.

“It is highly objectionable that an official coin should replicate the “Bharat Mata” image of a Hindu goddess promoted by the RSS as a symbol of its sectarian concept of a Hindutva Rashtra,” said the CPI (M) Polit Bureau statement.

It said the postage stamp showing uniformed RSS volunteers at the 1963 Republic Day parade too “falsifies history.” “This is based on the lie that Nehru invited the RSS to participate in the 1963 Republic Day parade as recognition of its patriotism during the Indo-China war when it has been shown through evidence that the 1963 republic day parade was essentially a huge gathering of more than one lakh citizens. The presence of uniformed RSS volunteers if at all, was unreported and incidental,” said the statement.

“This entire exercise is to whitewash the shameful role of the RSS which was not just distant from the freedom struggle but actually strengthened the British strategy of divide and rule, thus seeking to weaken the unity of the people of India which was a crucial component of the struggle against colonial rule,” said the CPI (M) Polit Bureau statement.

The CPI (M) statement read: “The history of independent India has seen the worst communal violence in which the role of the RSS has been detailed in numerous reports of official commissions of inquiry. Today it is the RSS and its Parivar who continue to target minority communities and also marginalized sections of society through the promotion of manuvadi ideologies. This is the reality of the history of the RSS that the Prime Minister seeks to conceal, by misusing his position. In doing so, he has lowered the dignity of the constitutional position he holds.”

Trump signs an executive order vowing to defend Qatar in the wake of Israel’s strike

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

Dubai(United Arab Emirates), Oct 01: President Donald Trump has signed an executive order vowing to use all measures including US military action to defend the energy-rich nation of Qatar — though it remains unclear just what weight the pledge will carry.

The text of the order, available Wednesday on the White House’s website but dated Monday, appears to be another measure by Trump to assure the Qataris following Israel’s surprise attack on the country targeting Hamas leaders as they weighed accepting a ceasefire with Israel over the war in the Gaza Strip.

The order cites the two countries’ “close cooperation” and “shared interest,” vowing to “guarantee the security and territorial integrity of the state of Qatar against external attack.”

“The United States shall regard any armed attack on the territory, sovereignty or critical infrastructure of the state of Qatar as a threat to the peace and security of the United States,” the order says.

“In the event of such an attack, the United States shall take all lawful and appropriate measures — including diplomatic, economic, and, if necessary, military — to defend the interests of the United States and of the state of Qatar and to restore peace and stability.”

The order apparently came during a visit to Washington on Monday by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump organised a call by Netanyahu to Qatar during the visit in which Netanyahu “expressed his deep regret” over the strike that killed six people, including a member of the Qatari security forces, the White House said.

Qatari officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s order. However, the Qatari-funded satellite news network Al Jazeera prominently reported about it Wednesday under the headline: “New Trump executive order guarantees Qatar security after Israeli attack.”

The true scope of the pledge remains in question. Typically, legally binding agreements, or treaties, need to receive the approval of the US Senate. However, presidents have entered international agreements without the Senate’s approval, like President Barack Obama did with Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

And ultimately, any decision to take military action rests with the president. That uncertainty has clouded previous US defence agreements in Trump’s second term, like NATO’s Article 5 guarantees.

Qatar, a peninsular nation that sticks out into the Persian Gulf, became fantastically wealthy through its natural gas reserves. It has been a key US military partner, allowing America’s Central Command to have its forward operating base at its vast Al Udeid Air Base. President Joe Biden named Qatar as a major non-NATO ally in 2022, in part due to its help during America’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.

In the aftermath of the Israeli attack, Saudi Arabia entered a mutual defence agreement with Pakistan, bringing the kingdom under Islamabad’s nuclear umbrella. It’s unclear whether other Gulf Arab countries, both worried about Israel and Iran as it faces reimposed United Nations sanctions over its nuclear programme, may seek similar arrangements as well with the region’s longtime security guarantor.

“The Gulf’s centrality in the Middle East and its significance to the United States warrants specific US guarantees beyond President Donald J. Trump’s assurances of nonrepetition and dinner meetings,” wrote Bader al-Saif, a history professor at Kuwait University who analyzes Gulf Arab affairs.
