Handwara Police attach motorcycle under NDPS Act

Handwara, Sep 28: Continuing its relentless drive against the menace of drug trafficking and substance abuse, Handwara Police today attached a motorcycle under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, officials said.

In a statement, A police spokesperson stated, “A police party of Police Post Zachaldara, acting on legal provisions, attached a motorcycle bearing registration number PB91E-1017, belonging to Ghulam Mohammad Rather, son of Mohammad Asadullah Rather, resident of Kralpora, Kupwara. The said individual is involved in FIR No. 164/2025, registered under Sections 8/15 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Handwara.”

The action was carried out under Section 68-F of the NDPS Act, which empowers law enforcement agencies to freeze, seize, or attach property/vehicles used in illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs. This step forms part of the broader strategy of Handwara Police to not only prosecute offenders but also strike at the financial gains and assets derived from the drug trade, he added.

SSP Handwara, Shri Mushtaq Ahmad Chowdhary (JKPS), reiterated that stringent action will continue against drug peddlers, suppliers, and their facilitators. “Our priority is to safeguard the younger generation from the disastrous effects of drugs. Anyone found involved directly or indirectly will face strict legal consequences,” he said.

Handwara Police once again urged the general public to extend full cooperation and share credible information regarding drug peddling and related activities. The identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential. Together, we can defeat this social evil and build a drug-free society.

Karur stampede: Vijay announces Rs 20 lakh compensation for victims’ families

Karur, Sep 28: Actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay on Sunday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakh each to the families of those killed and Rs two lakh to those injured in the catastrophic stampede in Karur.

The tragedy, which occurred during Vijay’s high-decibel election campaign at Velusamypuram, claimed 39 lives, including nine children and 16 women, and left over 80 injured.

In an emotional statement posted on X, Vijay said the incident left his “heart and mind overwhelmed with profound heaviness”.

Recalling the warmth of the supporters he had met along the way, the TVK chief said, “This is an irreparable loss for us. No words can comfort such pain. But as one among you, I will stand by your side and extend Rs 20 lakh to each bereaved family and Rs 2 lakh to those under treatment.”

He also assured that TVK would provide all needed assistance to the injured and prayed for their recovery.

The stampede reportedly began after hours of waiting in the sweltering heat for Vijay’s arrival; thousands had crowded into narrow approach roads well before the scheduled meeting.

When the lights reportedly went out and the crowd began surging, many were crushed or suffocated before rescue teams intervened. Ambulances rushed the injured to the Government Medical College Hospital and private facilities nearby, but several were declared dead on arrival.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who air-dashed to Tiruchi and reached Karur overnight, visited survivors and grieving families in hospital wards.

“Never in the history of our state has such a large number of people lost their lives at a political event,” he said, announcing a judicial inquiry led by retired High Court judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan to determine lapses.

CM Stalin had earlier sanctioned Rs 10 lakh compensation from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the families of each deceased and Rs one lakh for the injured.

Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami too travelled to Karur, consoled survivors and lashed out at what he termed “severe security failures.”

He urged the state to enforce strict safety protocols at all political rallies.

The Tamil Nadu Police have registered a case over the mishap and said the probe will examine crowd control and organisational lapses that led to one of Tamil Nadu’s worst-ever political tragedies.

Stray dogs dig up Joggers Park in Raj Bagh, locals question accountability

Lax Maintenance: Stray dogs dig up Joggers Park in Raj Bagh, locals question accountability

Srinagar, Sept 28: Stray dogs have dug up a large patch of Joggers Park, in the posh Raj Bagh area of Srinagar city, leaving the once well-maintained recreational ground in disarray. The damage, visible across the lawns, has raised serious concerns among locals, particularly joggers, about the absence of staff oversight and the accountability of those tasked with maintaining the park.

Joggers Park, located in the heart of Raj Bagh, is one of Srinagar’s few open green spaces frequented by morning walkers, elderly residents, and children. Locals said that the park has gradually fallen into neglect, with stray dogs roaming freely and causing destruction. “This is the only place for us to walk in peace, but now dogs have made it unsafe and destroyed the grass cover. Who will take responsibility?” asked a morning walker.

Despite the presence of garbage bins and other infrastructure in the park, locals complained that routine maintenance is missing and staff rarely show up to address problems. “Where are the employees whose job is to look after this park? Accountability is nowhere to be seen. Authorities are only good at inaugurating facilities, but when it comes to upkeep, there is no system,” another jogger remarked.

They said damage caused by stray dogs is not uncommon in urban parks but can be minimized through fencing, regular patrolling, and better waste management to keep animals away. However, in Srinagar, lax enforcement has allowed the problem to persist unchecked.

Joggers and families who rely on the park for exercise and recreation have appealed to the Floriculture Department to immediately repair the damaged lawns and deploy regular staff to monitor the premises. They warned that if such negligence continues, public spaces will lose their purpose and remain unsafe both for recreation and for maintaining Srinagar’s green character. [KNT]

18 sheep, goats killed as school bus rams into herd in North Kashmir’s Tangmarg

Baramulla, Sept 28: A road accident in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district left around 18 sheep and goats dead after a speeding school bus ran over a herd near Kunzar on the Tangmarg road. The accident has pushed the affected pastoral family into despair, as the livestock were their only source of income.

According to locals, the herd was crossing the road when the bus, allegedly moving at high speed, lost control and rammed into the animals. The livestock died instantly, leaving the owner shocked and devastated. Police confirmed that a formal case has been registered and that the matter is under investigation.

The owner of the livestock, belonging to a poor pastoral family, expressed deep anguish over the loss, saying the incident had destroyed their livelihood. “These animals were our bread and butter. Losing them means we have no way left to survive,” the family said in an emotional appeal to authorities, urging financial assistance and strict action against reckless driving.

Locals present at the site said that overspeeding has become a recurring menace on the Kunzar–Tangmarg and Gulmarg stretches. They noted that despite traffic police conducting awareness drives, many drivers continue to flout traffic rules, creating constant danger on the roads. “Every day we see vehicles being driven carelessly. Unless rules are enforced properly, accidents like this will keep repeating,” said a local.

Authorities are expected to assess the family’s loss and consider appropriate relief measures in the coming days. Meanwhile, traffic police have reiterated their appeal to drivers to strictly follow speed limits, especially in areas where locals and their livestock frequently cross the road. [KNT]

According to police, at least seven people were shot during the attack, including three who were pronounced dead at the scene.

Toll goes up to 38, crowds surged due to delayed arrival of Vijay, says DGP

TN stampede: Toll goes up to 38, crowds surged due to delayed arrival of Vijay, says DGP

Chennai, Sep 28: The toll from the stampede at actor Vijay’s public rally in Karur has risen to 38, Tamil Nadu DGP G Venkataraman said on Sunday.

The crowd swelled due to the delayed arrival of the actor-politician to the venue and they lacked sufficient food and water during the waiting hours under the hot sun, he told reporters here.

“An unfortunate incident happened; a regrettable one. As per latest information, 38 have persons have died. They are 12 men, 16 women and 10 children,” he said in an early morning briefing.

He further said there was a crowd surge after the official Twitter handle of Vijay’s TVK party mentioned that he would arrive at the meeting venue by 12 noon.

“Permission (for the meeting) was sought for between 3 pm-10 pm. The TVK Twitter account said he will come at 12 and crowd started coming in from 11 AM. He came at 7.40 PM. The people lacked sufficient food water under the hot sun.”

“Our intention is not to blame anyone, but we are just stating the facts,” the Head of Police Force added.

Further, Vijay was accorded welcome at one point and a big crowd followed him and he was ushered in safely to the venue by the police. “He also lauded the police…the crowd kept swelling,” he said.

While the organisers put the expected number at 10,000, about 27,000 people turned up to have a glimpse of the actor, Venkataraman said.

He indicated police protection was given anticipating about 20,000.

Asked if there were “only 500” police personnel on bandobast duty, he said the meeting venue was a public road and more police cover would have meant people would not have sufficient space.

Two days ago, the meeting of a “big party” was held here, he said in an apparent reference to the AIADMK.

Asked if there was any “security lapse” that led to the tragic incident, he pointed out that the government has announced a Commission of Inquiry to probe the cause.

The organisers were clearly told about crowd and related issues and the police is only “extra help,” and there cannot be added police presence anticipating such a surge in crowd.

Presently ADGP (Law and Order), Davidson Devasirvatham, 3 Inspector General of Police, 2 DIGs, 10 SPs and 2000 police personnel have left for Karur, he said.

Wangchuk’s detention grave injustice: J-K deputy CM

Pakistan has achieved nothing, will achieve nothing from terrorism in J&K: Dy CM

Jammu, Sep 27: Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Saturday said the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk is grave injustice and a joke with democracy.

Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) on Friday and lodged in Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan, two days after protests for statehood to Ladakh turned violent killing four people and injuring 90 others.

“He (Wangchuk) was speaking about global warming and public issues and sending him to Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan without a fault is injustice and a joke with democracy,” Choudhary told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

He said the authorities should have arrested those who indulged in arson. “What was his fault? Today is a situation where even a son is not listening to his father so how come people of Ladakh will follow him.”

The deputy chief minister said the people like Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev and Mahatma Gandhi who sacrificed their lives for freedom and democracy might be weeping on finding “gentlemen being jailed in fabricated cases and then sending them in jails far away from their families so that they cannot meet each other”.

Meanwhile, J&K Congress working president Raman Bhalla hit out at the BJP for its “total failure” to deal with the situation in Leh and accused the Centre of pushing the people of Ladakh to the wall by ignoring their peaceful struggle in support of their demands for the last five years.

“The violence was the result of utter failure of the Centre to hold meaningful and result oriented dialogue with the peaceful agitators for five years on the promises made to them by the BJP,” Bhalla, flanked by other senior leaders, told reporters here.

“The BJP stands exposed for its lies and betrayals, as the promises made to the Ladakhis were not fulfilled. The Congress supports the legitimate demands of people of Ladakh and appeals for peace and normalcy,” he said.

The Congress condemned the killing of four youth on Wednesday’s violence and supported the demand for a judicial probe for justice.

“We appeal to the people of Ladakh to continue to follow Gandhian mode for the fulfilment of their legitimate demands,” Bhalla said.

The Congress leader said the Centre should learn a lesson from Ladakh and fulfil the repeated promises made to the people of J&K about restoration of statehood without any further delay.

TB a curable disease, need to end stigma: DHSK

TB a curable disease, need to end stigma: DHSK

Srinagar, Sep 27: In a decisive step towards eliminating the stigma around Tuberculosis (TB), the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir, in collaboration with the College of Education, has launched a joint awareness and outreach program to educate communities about the curability of TB and the importance of early detection and treatment.

“TB is a very curable disease,” said the Director of Health Services, Kashmir, Dr Jehangir Bakshi said during the official launch of the initiative. “But the social stigma attached to it often delays diagnosis and treatment. To remove that stigma, we have to involve the community — and there is no one better than a teacher to lead that effort.”

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), this collaborative program aims to harness the influence of educators in shaping public perception. By empowering teachers with accurate knowledge about TB, the campaign hopes to create a ripple effect that reaches students, families, and wider communities.

Tuberculosis, a bacterial infection primarily affecting the lungs, is both preventable and treatable. With proper medication and adherence to treatment regimens, most TB patients recover fully. However, misconceptions and fear around the disease still persist, often leading to social ostracization of patients and reluctance to seek timely medical help.

According to health experts, stigma is one of the biggest barriers in India’s TB elimination efforts. People avoid getting tested or even discussing symptoms due to fear of being labelled, which can lead to late-stage diagnosis and further spread of the infection

The Director highlighted the unique role of educators in shaping social attitudes. “Teachers are trusted figures in every household. Their voice carries weight not just in classrooms but in the hearts of communities. By involving them, we are building a bridge between medical knowledge and public understanding.”

As part of the program, teacher training workshops, school-based awareness sessions, and community outreach events are being organized. These sessions will include interactive modules on TB symptoms, transmission, treatment, and the importance of empathy and support for patients.

The Health Department believes that eliminating TB is not just a medical challenge, but a social one. “This is not just about pills and diagnostics; it’s about people,” the Director said. “We need a community-driven approach where no one is afraid to seek help. That begins with changing mindsets — and education is our most powerful tool.”

This initiative comes as part of India’s larger commitment to eliminate TB by 2025, ahead of the global target.
