Day after GDA takeover, Baramulla court halts hotel Royal park eviction

0

Srinagar, Sep 27:  A local Court here in Baramulla has ordered status quo on Hotel Royal Park, Gulmarg, which was recently taken over by the authorities after its rent agreement reportedly expired in June this year.

The order was passed today by the Court of 1st Additional District Judge, Baramulla, Naseer Ahmad Dar, in a suit filed by Bilal Ahmad Shah, proprietor of Hotel Royal Park, against the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA).

The court, as per Kashmir Dot Com, while admitting the plea for declaration and perpetual injunction, directed the GDA to maintain status quo with respect to the hotel premises until the next date of hearing on October 7, 2025.

The plaintiff, represented by Advocate Khurshid Naik, argued that the 20-year lease period of the hotel should be calculated from December 2005, the date of completion of renovation works and execution of the rent deed, and would therefore expire only in November 2025. He further stated that he has paid rent regularly, including an advance for the coming four months, and that his request for a lease extension of another 20 years is still under consideration with the J&K Tourism Department.

The court, after perusing the plaint and supporting documents, observed that a prima facie case exists in favour of the plaintiff and restrained the GDA from eviction until further hearing. The order also allows the defendant authority to seek modification or cancellation of the interim relief.

Earlier, officials of the Gulmarg Development Authority had announced that Hotel Royal Park was being reclaimed after the rent agreement expired in June this year, and that the property would be handed back to the GDA. The hotel, a GDA-owned property, had been rented to a local businessman for nearly two decades.

The move was seen as part of a larger government effort to reclaim expired lease properties in Gulmarg. Recently, the administration had also taken over the iconic 137-year-old Hotel Nedous, which was occupying over 98 kanals of state land after its lease expired in 1985. (KDC)

Airstrikes, shooting kill at least 38 people in Gaza as Israel ignores demands for ceasefire

Israel kills 34 people in Gaza ahead of UN meeting, where countries will recognise Palestinian state

Deir Al-Balah, Sep 27: Israeli strikes and gunfire killed at least 38 people across Gaza, health officials said, as international pressure grows for a ceasefire but Israel’s leader remains defiant about continuing the war.

Strikes in central and northern Gaza killed people in their homes in the early hours of Saturday morning, including nine from the same family in a house in the Nuseirat refugee camp, according to health staff at the Al-Awda hospital where the bodies were brought.

The attacks came hours after a defiant Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told fellow world leaders at the UN General Assembly Friday that his nation “must finish the job” against Hamas in Gaza.

Netanyahu’s words, aimed as much at his increasingly divided domestic audience as the global one, began after dozens of delegates from multiple nations walked out of the UN General Assembly hall en masse Friday morning as he began speaking.

International pressure on Israel to end the war is increasing, as is Israel’s isolation, with a growing list of countries deciding recently to recognize Palestinian statehood — something Israel rejects.

Countries have been lobbying US President Donald Trump to press Israel for a ceasefire. On Friday, Trump told reporters on the White House lawn that he believes the US is close to achieving a deal on easing fighting in Gaza that “will get the hostages back” and “end the war.”

Trump and Netanyahu are scheduled to meet Monday, and Trump said on social media Friday that “very inspired and productive discussions” and “intense negotiations” about Gaza are ongoing with countries in the region.

Yet, Israel is pressing ahead with another major ground operation in Gaza City, which experts say is experiencing famine. More than 300,000 people have fled, but up to 700,000 are still there, many because they can’t afford to relocate.

The strikes Saturday morning demolished a house in Gaza City’s Tufah neighborhood, killing at least 11 people, more than half of them women and children, according to the Al-Ahly Hospital where the bodies were brought. Four other people were killed when an airstrike hit their homes in the Shati refugee camp, according to Shifa hospital.

Six other Palestinians were killed by Israeli gunfire while seeking aid in southern and central Gaza, according to Nasser and Al Awda hospitals where the bodies were brought.

Israel’s army did not immediately respond about the airstrikes or the gunfire.

Hospitals and health clinics in Gaza City are on the brink of collapse. Nearly two weeks into the offensive, two clinics have been destroyed by airstrikes, two hospitals shut down after being damaged and others are barely functioning, with medicine, equipment, food and fuel in short supply.

Many patients and staff have been forced to flee hospitals, leaving behind only a few doctors and nurses to tend to children in incubators or other patients too ill to move.

On Friday, aid group Doctors Without Borders said it was forced to suspend activities in Gaza City amid an intensified Israeli offensive. The group said Israeli tanks were less than half a mile from its health care facilities and the escalating attacks have created an “unacceptable level of risk” for its staff.

Meanwhile, the food situation in the north has also worsened, as Israel has halted aid deliveries through its crossing into northern Gaza since September 12 and has increasingly rejected UN requests to bring supplies from southern Gaza into the north, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said.

Israel’s campaign in Gaza has killed more than 65,000 people and wounded more than 167,000 others, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. It doesn’t distinguish between civilians and combatants, but says women and children make up around half the fatalities. The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government, but UN agencies and many independent experts consider its figures to be the most reliable estimate of wartime casualties.

Israel’s campaign was triggered when Hamas-led militants stormed into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostage. Forty-eight captives remain in Gaza, around 20 of them believed by Israel to be alive, after most of the rest were freed in ceasefires or other deals.

‘Unfortunate’ violence in Leh used to defame people’s struggle: Aga Ruhullah

PSA misused, fight for statehood to end It: MP Aga Ruhullah

Sonmarg, Sept 27: National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Saturday said the people of Ladakh are now facing the consequences of the 2019 decision that separated the region from Jammu and Kashmir, stressing that their long-standing demands deserve serious attention from the Central Government.

Speaking to reporters at Nilgrath Sonmarg, Ruhullah said Ladakhis had peacefully demanded statehood and constitutional safeguards under the 6th Schedule for the last five years, but their appeals went unheard. He said the recent violent incident in Leh was being used to tarnish their movement.

“The unfortunate episode in Leh is being misused to defame their struggle. Instead of addressing their aspirations, they are being maligned. It is unfair to brand patriots as anti-national. If they wish to rejoin Jammu and Kashmir, we are with them. If they seek 6th Schedule protections, we are equally with them. The people of Jammu and Kashmir extend full support to Ladakh,” Ruhullah said.

Turning his criticism towards New Delhi, the Central Kashmir MP said the ruling dispensation pays little heed to the voices of people. “Those in power in Delhi care nothing for the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Our demands go beyond statehood. We also want restoration of special status. When we raise these issues democratically, the least the government can do is listen,” he remarked.

Ruhullah also endorsed the recent statement of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who had called for keeping the BJP away from power in the Union Territory. “It is important for us to ensure that the BJP does not come back to power in Jammu and Kashmir. People have given their mandate, and it must be respected,” he said. [KNT]

TRF narrative being pushed on social media a serious threat: LG Sinha

0
J&K’s innovation ecosystem transforming at school level: LG

Srinagar, Sep 27: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday said that narratives pushed by groups like Terrorist Resistance Front (TRF) on social media pose a “serious threat” if ignored.

Speaking at an event at Tagore Hall in Srinagar, LG Sinha urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to stand united against terrorism and actively counter extremist propaganda to safeguard peace and stability.

He said that they have a direct connection and if such narratives are being spread on TRF’s social media and “we remain silent, it is dangerous. We must pay attention to it”.

“The fight against terrorism is not the responsibility of security forces alone but also of citizens. More than 40 lives have been lost due to terrorism, and it must be completely eradicated not just by the forces but by citizens too. I believe people must come forward,” he said.

The LG said that despite decades of suffering, J&K is witnessing a significant transformation, with stone pelting becoming “a thing of the past” and local terrorist recruitment declining. “Whenever there is a division in any family, we must try to put our house in order,” he added.

Sinha said that major changes followed after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which are an important milestone in J&K’s history.

The LG also said that steps like granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Pahari community, strengthening the Forest Rights Act, and launching Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas reflect the government’s commitment to social and economic justice.

“Now equal rights are being given to Pahari community. No one can stop this community. What is their right will be given to this community,” he added.

Sinha said that terrorism and left-wing extremism have significantly declined across the country, particularly in the northeast, and expressed confidence that Naxalism will soon be eliminated.

“J&K has suffered for a long time, and end of terrorism is necessary. Security agencies are doing their job, and we as citizens must behave responsibly and not engage in any wrong activities,” he said—(KNO)

Baramulla District Magistrate orders closure of mining near Lachipora Wildlife Sanctuary

Baramulla District Magistrate orders closure of mining near Lachipora Wildlife Sanctuary

Baramulla, Sept 27: The District Magistrate Baramulla has ordered the immediate closure of mining operations near Lachipora Wildlife Sanctuary, citing a Supreme Court directive that prohibits mining within a one-kilometre radius of protected forests. The order came after the Wildlife Warden North Kashmir Division Sopore reported that several gypsum units in Uri and Boniyar subdivisions were operating within the prohibited zone.

In February this year, the Supreme Court ruled that mining activities in eco-sensitive zones and within one kilometre of sanctuary boundaries were illegal and must cease forthwith. Acting on this, the Baramulla administration verified the locations of local gypsum units and found that 14 such mines, including units in Dara Gutliyan, Dachina Salamabad, Bagna, Nalusa, Zamboor Patan, and Jabador, fell inside the restricted area.

The District Magistrate said the order must be implemented with immediate effect. Senior Superintendent of Police Baramulla, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Uri, Tehsildars of Uri and Boniyar, the District Mineral Officer, and officials from the Forest and Pollution Control departments have been directed to ensure strict enforcement of the ban.

Authorities emphasised that the measure is intended to protect the ecological integrity of Lachipora Wildlife Sanctuary and to comply fully with the Supreme Court’s judgment. While the move is expected to affect gypsum mining activities in the region, officials noted that environmental safeguards and legal compliance take precedence over commercial interests. [KNT]
