Eid-ul-Adha today

Eid-ul-Adha today

Srinagar, Jun 6: The holy festival of Eid-ul-Adha will be observed across Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday with religious enthusiasm and devotion. The day marks a significant occasion in the Islamic calendar, celebrated annually on the 10th day of Zul Hijjah, the concluding month of the Islamic lunar year.

As a tradition, the largest Eid gathering in Kashmir is set to take place at the Hazratbal shrine on the banks of Dal Lake.

Thousands of devotees are expected to assemble for the special Eid prayers, followed by sermons focusing on the values of sacrifice, obedience, and compassion in Islam.

Thousands of Muslims across Kashmir will perform the holy ritual of animal sacrifice after the congregational Eid prayers.

ìWith the grace of Allah, we have reached this holy day, and we are eagerly waiting to perform the duty of animal sacrifice. This is the day when we will offer prayers in huge congregations, mostly at Eidgahs and major religious places like Dargah Hazratbal,î Abrar Ahmad, a local from Hazratbal said.

For several days, markets surrounding the Hazratbal area, downtown, and Lal Chowk have been bustling with activity, as locals throng the streets in preparation for the festival. Traders also said that the business picked up during these days.

ìThese festivals are an opportunity to meet and greet each other while people like us earn livelihood following the brisk shopping,î said Imran Ahmad, a shopkeeper in downtown Srinagar.

Eid-ul-Adha honours the unwavering faith of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who, in a divine test of devotion, prepared to sacrifice his son Prophet Ismail (AS) on Allahís command.

Commemorating this act, Muslims worldwide perform animal sacrifices on this day, distributing the meat among family, neighbours, and the less fortunate.

In the run-up to Eid, the administration, including J&K Waqf officials, held several meetings and reviewed the arrangements for Eid.

Officials said that essential services, including those by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Police, Public Health Engineering (PHE), Power Development Department (PDD), and Health Department, have put special measures in place for the festival.

They said cleanliness drives and uninterrupted water and electricity supply have been ensured at key congregation points.

Apart from Hazratbal, major congregational prayers will be held at prominent Masjids and shrines in Srinagar, including Masjid Jamiat-e-Ahli Hadees Gaw Kadal, Asar-e-Sharif Jenab Sahib Soura, Asar-e-Sharif Shehri Kalashpora, Ziyarat Makhdoom Sahib (RA), and Khanqah-e-Moula.

Similar prayer congregations are scheduled across south Kashmir. In Anantnag, prayers will be held at Jamia Masjid Hanfia, Jamia Masjid Ahlihadith, Bait-ul-Muqarram, and Rehat-Ded Masjid.

The biggest gatherings in Kulgam are expected at Jamia Masjid, while significant turnouts are also anticipated at Khankah Tral, Jamia Masjid Shopian, and Jamia Masjid Pulwama. With all preparations finalised, people across the Valley are geared up to mark the festival with prayers, sacrifices, and community feasts.

Train connectivity will transform tourism, boost trade: CM Omar

Katra, Jun 6: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Friday in his inimitable manner pleaded the cause of restoration of statehood, in the presence of the Prime Minister, by reflecting on his (Omarís) personal tryst with key milestones in J&Kís rail history.

The Chief Minister was addressing a large gathering at Katra stadium after the inauguration of the Chenab and Anji Bridges and at the flagging-off ceremony of the Vande Bharat Train to Kashmir by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Also present on the occasion were Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha; Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw; Union MoS PMO Jitendra Singh besides other dignitaries.

CM Omar recalled his presence at the inauguration of the Anantnag Railway Station, the Banihal Railway Tunnel, and his governmentís final event at the same venue with PM Modi in 2014.

ìYou may call it fate, or perhaps destiny, but I have always had the good fortune of being present at key milestones in Jammu and Kashmirís railway journey,î he said.

In the same breath, he, in a lighter vein remarked, ìFour persons, who were present in the 2014 event, are present today also.î

Reference was to Prime Minister Narendra Modi; Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who was then the Minister of State for Railways; Union Minister of State in PMO Jitendra Singh and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

ìI was then the Chief Minister of a full-fledged state. In the present context, the Lieutenant Governor is present here at a promoted rank while I stand here slightly demoted being the Chief Minister of a Union Territory,î the Chief Minister said, evoking laughter.

He drew applause as he expressed hope that with the Prime Ministerís continued support, Jammu and Kashmir would soon regain its status as a full-fledged state.

ìToday marks yet another momentous occasion. With your leadership and support, we look forward to Jammu and Kashmir regaining its status as a full-fledged state,î he said.

CM Omar hailed the rail link of Kashmir with the rest of the country as a ìhistoric accomplishment,î stating that the development would boost tourism, and trade and bring comfort in the daily lives of people of Jammu and Kashmir.

ìThis marks Kashmirís first all-weather railway connectivity with the rest of India. The benefits to Jammu and Kashmir will be substantial. Tourism will receive a major boost, and the daily lives of our residents will improve,î the Chief Minister said.

He highlighted the difficulties faced by people during inclement weather when highway closures lead to exorbitant airfares.

ìWith this railway line operational, that hardship will be alleviated to a great extent, offering affordable and reliable transportation,î CM Omar noted.

Speaking about the economic benefits, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of better market access for the regionís horticultural produce.

ìOur apples, cherries, and other fruit will now find faster and more easy access to markets across the country and even globally. This will provide a significant economic benefit to our growers and traders,î he said.

Lauding Prime Minister Modiís leadership, the Chief Minister said, ìThe successful completion of this critical infrastructure project stands as a testament to the Centreís commitment to the development of Jammu and Kashmir.î

ìUnder PM Modiís stewardship, yet another critical infrastructure project in Jammu & Kashmir has been completed. We are also witnessing rapid progress on other vital initiatives ó the Jammu Ring Road, the Srinagar Ring Road, the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, the four-laning of the Jammu-Srinagar Highway, and the expansion of both the Jammu and Srinagar airports and the railway network,î he said.

CM Omar also recalled that the dream of connecting Kashmir via railway dates back to colonial times.

ìEven during British rule, plans were envisioned ó such as the proposed Uri and Jhelum railway lines ó but they remained unfulfilled. What the British could not achieve, you have made a reality. You have connected Kashmir with the rest of India and, through it, to the wider world. This is a historic accomplishment,î he said.

Paying tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he credited him for being the first to recognise the rail network to Kashmir as a project of national importance.

ìThis progress owes much to the vision of Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji, who declared this railway line a project of national importance. Since then, the project has seen consistent progress and budgetary prioritization,î he said.

Reaffirming his governmentís commitment to development, the Chief Minister reiterated his resolve to fulfil the vision of a prosperous region.

ìOur government remains committed to the vision of ëViksit Jammu Kashmir, Viksit Bharatí ó a developed Jammu and Kashmir, a developed India ó and we are determined to realize this goal for the people of our region.î

The Chief Minister extended his gratitude to the Prime Minister on behalf of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

ìOn this historic day, on behalf of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, I extend my heartfelt gratitude and congratulations to you, Prime Minister. Thank you for your unwavering support and for helping turn decades-old dreams into reality.î

SC allows NBE to schedule NEET-PG 2025 exam on August 3

'Can't demoralise our forces’, SC declines PIL seeking judicial probe into Pahalgam attack

New Delhi, June 06: The Supreme Court on Friday allowed an application filed by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) seeking permission to schedule the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)-PG 2025 on August 3.

A Bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Augustine George Masih took note of the submission that August 3 was the earliest possible available date given by its technology partner for conducting the NEET-PG 2025 examination in terms of the recent apex court order.

Allowing the application filed by the NBE to conduct the NEET-PG 2025 examination on August 3, the Justice Mishra-led Bench clarified that no further time extension will be allowed by the top court.

In an order passed on May 30, the Supreme Court deprecated the practice of conducting the NEET-PG exam in two shifts and opined that holding the examination in two shifts leads to arbitrariness and cannot give a level playing field to the candidates.

It ordered the NBE to make necessary arrangements for holding the NEET-PG 2025 examination in one shift, duly ensuring that complete transparency is maintained and secure centres are identified and commissioned.

“The question papers in two shifts can never be of the same difficulty level. Last year, it (NEET-PG 2024) may have been held in two shifts in the facts and circumstances of that stage. But the examining body ought to have considered making arrangements for holding the examination in one shift,” the Supreme Court had remarked.

The apex court was dealing with a clutch of petitions challenging the lack of transparency in the conduct of the NEET-PG examination.

In their plea filed before the apex court, NEET-PG aspirants claimed that the introduction of two shifts, normalisation method, and change in the tie-breaker criterion affected medical students adversely. The petitioners said that NEET-PG had never been held in two shifts before and had always remained a single-shift and single-day examination to ensure a uniform examination standard and fairness of the national test.

Kashmir to Kanyakumari no longer a dream: PM Modi

Katra, June 06: Stating that Kashmir to Kanyakumari is no longer a dream, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday termed completion of Kashmir rail project as “festival of India’s unity, strength, and integration.”

After dedicating the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link Project (USBRL) addressed a massive public rally in Katra, marking his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir after the successful “Operation Sindoor” – a counter-terrorism operation launched in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists.

PM Modi, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said, “Today’s occasion is a festival of India’s unity, strength, and integration.”

He announced the operationalisation of two new Vande Bharat trains for Jammu and Kashmir, and laid the foundation for infrastructure projects worth over ₹46,000 crore, aiming to boost connectivity, tourism, and economic development in the Union Territory.

“From Kashmir to Kanyakumari is no longer a dream—it is now a reality for the Indian Railways. Stations like Udhampur and Baramulla are not just names on the map, they are part of the identity of a new Jammu and Kashmir,” the Prime Minister said.

PM Modi also expressed pride in dedicating the iconic Chenab and Anji bridges to the nation.

Describing the Chenab Bridge as “taller than the Eiffel Tower,” he called it a future “tourist hotspot” and a symbol of India’s engineering prowess. “These bridges are not just made of steel and concrete. They represent the strength and resilience of New India,” he said, while praising the determination of engineers who worked under extreme conditions.

Dream of lakhs comes true

Referring to the decades-old aspiration for railway connectivity in the region, PM Modi referred to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s speech, saying, “The CM said that he had been waiting for this project since his school days in class 7 or 8. Today, that dream of lakhs has come true.”

He recalled comments from a student from Sangaldan, who had written that people in his village had never seen a real train and now they are looking forward towards economic and social transformation.
“A girl student wrote in a newspaper that now the weather will no longer dictate if roads remain open—this is the power of connectivity,” PM Modi added.

The Prime Minister also spoke of the transformation Jammu and Kashmir has seen in education and healthcare. “We now have NITs, IITs, AIIMS, and central universities in Jammu and Kashmir. Seven new medical colleges have been set up, and the number of MBBS seats has increased to 1,300,” he said, announcing a new medical college for Reasi, funded in part by contributions from Mata Vaishno Devi devotees.

Reflects on 11-year Journey

Reflecting on the 11-year journey of the BJP-led NDA government, PM Modi highlighted its pro-poor governance model. “More than 25 crore Indians who once lived in poverty are now part of the growing middle class. These are not just statistics—these are lives transformed,” he said.

He emphasized that for the first time since 1947, so much focused work has been done for the middle class and poor.

“People who are caught up in needless debates should open their eyes and see who has actually benefitted,” he asserted. (KNO)

Pakistan attacked 'insaniyat', Kashimiriyat in Pahalgam: PM Modi

Katra, June 06: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday accused Pakistan of attacking ‘insaniyat’ and Kashimiriyat by targeting tourists in Pahalgam, saying the intent was to trigger communal clashes in India and rob Kashmiri people dependant on tourism of their livelihoods.

The prime minister was speaking after flagging off the first train service to the Kashmir Valley, and inaugurating several development projects, including the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River.

He said tourism provided employment and acts as a connecting link between people, but unfortunately, the neighbouring country is an enemy of humanity, harmony and tourism.

“Not only that, Pakistan is also the enemy of poor’s bread and butter. What happened on April 22 in Pahalgam is an example of that. Pakistan attacked ‘insaniyat’ and Kashmiriyat in Pahalgam.

“The intent of Pakistan was to trigger communal riots in India. It wanted to strip people of Kashmir of their earnings that’s why Pakistan attacked tourism,” he said.
