Israeli strikes on Gaza kill at least 16 as war rages on after opening of new front with Iran

Deir al-Balah , Jun 14: At least 16 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip overnight and into Saturday, according to local health officials.

The 20-month war with Hamas has raged on even as Israel has opened a new front with heavy strikes on Iran that sparked retaliatory drone and missile attacks. Another 11 Palestinians were killed overnight near food distribution points run by an Israeli-and US-supported humanitarian group in the latest of almost daily shootings near the sites since they opened last month.

Palestinian witnesses say Israeli forces have fired on the crowds, while the military says it has only fired warning shots near people it describes as suspects who approached its forces. The military did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the latest shootings. The sites are located in military zones that are off limits to independent media.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a private contractor that operates the sites, said they were closed Saturday. But witnesses said thousands had gathered near the sites anyway, desperate for food as Israel’s blockade and military campaign have driven the territory to the brink of famine.

The al-Awda Hospital said it received eight bodies and at least 125 wounded people from a shooting near a GHF site in central Gaza.

Mohamed Abu Hussein, a resident of the built-up Bureij refugee camp nearby, said Israeli forces opened fire toward the crowd about a kilometre from the food distribution point. He said he saw several people fall to the ground as thousands ran away.

In the southern city of Khan Younis, the Nasser Hospital said it received 16 dead, including five women, from multiple Israeli strikes late Friday and early Saturday. It said another three men were killed near two GHF aid sites in the southernmost city of Rafah, now a mostly uninhabited military zone.

Israel and the United States say the new system is intended to replace a UN-run network that has distributed aid across Gaza through 20 months of war. They accuse Hamas of siphoning off the aid and reselling it to fund its militant activities.

UN officials deny Hamas has diverted significant amounts of aid and say the new system is unable to meet mounting needs. They say the new system has militarised aid by allowing Israel to decide who has access and by forcing Palestinians to travel long distances or relocate again after waves of displacement.

They say the UN has meanwhile struggled to deliver aid even after Israel eased its blockade last month because of military restrictions and rising lawlessness.

Hamas, which is allied with Iran, sparked the war when its fighters led a rampage into southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251.

They still hold 53 hostages, less than half of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign has killed over 55,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which has said women and children make up more than half of the dead but does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in count.

The offensive has destroyed vast areas of Gaza and displaced 90 per cent of the population of some 2 million Palestinians, leaving them almost entirely reliant on international aid.

The war has drawn in Iran and its other allies across the region, igniting a chain of events that led to Israel’s major strikes on Iran’s nuclear and military facilities on Friday.

Except police, all departments fall under government jurisdiction: LG Sinha clarifies

Kulgam, June 14: In a candid address to farmers in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha clarified the limits of his administrative authority, stating that except for the police department, all other departments such as power, water, agriculture, and roads fall under the jurisdiction of the government.

The LG was responding to a series of demands made by the farmers, particularly the inclusion of horticulture under the Crop Insurance Scheme. Farmers had urged the LG to take steps to safeguard their produce from unpredictable weather and crop losses.

“You said, ‘LG Sahab give us something.’ The only thing I can give you is the police personnel,” Sinha remarked with a touch of humour. “Rest – roads, water, power, agriculture, are with the government. I will have no objection if the government concedes to your demands,” he added, expressing solidarity with the farming community.

His remarks highlighted the administrative distinction between the roles of the Union Territory’s Lieutenant Governor and the broader governmental apparatus, even as he showed a willingness to support just demands raised by the people. [KNT]

Death toll in plane tragedy touches 270, say doctors; Centre forms panel to find causes of crash

Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu assures "fair and thorough" investigation into Ahmedabad plane crash

Ahmedabad, June 14: The death toll in the Air India plane tragedy touched 270 on Saturday with doctors saying that these many bodies have been brought to the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital from the crash site so far.

Officials said the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Service (AFES) recovered a corpse and some human body parts in the last 24 hours from the plane crash site.

The authorities had earlier pegged the death toll at 265.

The Centre has set up a high-level multi-disciplinary committee, headed by the Union home secretary, to examine the causes that led to the Air India plane crash, and also suggest comprehensive guidelines to prevent such incidents in the future.

The London-bound Air India flight, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner (AI 171) with 242 people on board, crashed into a medical hostel and its canteen complex in the Meghaninagar area on Thursday afternoon, moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

“Around 270 bodies have been brought to the civil hospital so far from the plane crash site,” President of Junior Doctors association of BJ Medical College, Dr Dhaval Gameti, told PTI.

The process of identification of victims by matching the DNA samples is currently underway, and the bodies will be handed over to their relatives once the process is complete, he said.

Additional Chief Fire Officer Jayesh Khadia said, “Our firemen, who are helping forensic and aviation experts in their ongoing investigation at the crash site, found some body parts from the canteen’s rubble on Friday, while a body was found today morning.”

Apart from central and state government agencies, a team of the National Security Guard (NSG) has also been deployed at the Air India plane crash site.

Official sources said the NSG team has been deployed to assist other agencies in relief operations and they do not have any investigative powers.

NSG commandos were seen at the crash site on the hostel building where the tail of the plane got stuck after the crash.

Agencies like Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Ahmedabad crime branch and local police, among others, are involved in the investigation.

Sources said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials visited the site on Friday.

A high-level multi-disciplinary committee, headed by the Union home secretary, has been formed to examine the causes that led to the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, the civil aviation ministry said in Delhi.

The committee will not be a substitute to other enquiries being conducted by relevant organisations, it said.

The panel “will focus on formulating the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for preventing and handling such occurrences in the future, and will publish its report in three months, it added.

Ahmedabad fire brigade officials said since the tail fin of the aircraft was stuck on top of the canteen’s damaged building, cranes have been roped in to remove it and bring it down.

“We will start the work of removing the tail fin from the building and bring it on the ground once Air India officials arrive at the site,” Khadia said.

After the crash, senior police officials had informed the media that at least 265 people were killed in the crash, which included passengers and other victims on the ground.

Of the 242 passengers and crew members, 241 have been killed in the plane crash, while one passenger miraculously survived.

Meanwhile, student hostels that suffered damage in the crash are being vacated for a probe by the AAIB and accommodated elsewhere, Minakshi Parikh, the Dean of the B J Medical College said.

“The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AIIB), under the Civil Aviation Ministry, wants to probe (the air crash). For this, Atulyam 1, 2, 3 and 4 have been vacated or are being vacated. We have made an alternative arrangement for post-graduate students residing there,” she said.

Iran says nuclear talks with US now “meaningless” after Israeli strike: Report

Iran says nuclear talks with US now "meaningless" after Israeli strike: Report

Tehran, June 14 : Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday said that any talks with the United States over Tehran’s nuclear programme are now “meaningless” following Israel’s recent attack on Iranian territory, according to a report by Mehr News Agency (MNA).

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei Hamaneh stated that the US cannot claim to be negotiating while allegedly permitting Israel to carry out military strikes.

“The other side (the US) acted in a way that makes dialogue meaningless. You cannot claim to negotiate and at the same time divide work by allowing the Zionist regime (Israel) to target Iran’s territory,” MNA, citing Baghaei, reported.

Baghaei also accused the US of supporting the Israeli attack. He said that the Israeli regime “succeeded in influencing” the diplomatic process and claimed the strike would not have happened without Washington’s permission.

Iran had previously accused the United States of being complicit in the Israeli military action. The sixth round of US-Iran nuclear talks was scheduled to take place on Sunday in Muscat. However, following the Israeli strikes, it remains unclear whether the meeting will proceed.

Mehr News Agency, citing Reuters, reported that US President Donald Trump said he and his team were aware that the Israeli attacks were going to happen, but still believed there was a possibility for an agreement.

Meanwhile, hours after the first Israeli strike, Trump issued a warning to Iran, urging it to strike a deal “before it is too late.”

In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump said: “I gave Iran chance after chance to make a deal. I told them, in the strongest of words, to ‘just do it,’ but no matter how hard they tried, no matter how close they got, they just couldn’t get it done. I told them it would be much worse than anything they know, anticipated, or were told, that the United States makes the best and most lethal military equipment anywhere in the World, by far, and that Israel has a lot of it, with much more to come – and they know how to use it. Certain Iranian hardliners spoke bravely, but they didn’t know what was about to happen.”

“They are all DEAD now, and it will only get worse! There has already been great death and destruction, but there is still time to make this slaughter, with the next already planned attacks being even more brutal, come to an end. Iran must make a deal before there is nothing left, and save what was once known as the Iranian Empire. No more death, no more destruction, Just do it, before it is too late. God Bless You All,”  he iraadded.

Trump’s comments come amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.

On Friday, Israel launched what it described as “pre-emptive” strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. In a clarification posted on X, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said: “Iran is closer than ever to obtaining a nuclear weapon. Weapons of mass destruction in the hands of the Iranian regime are an existential threat to the State of Israel and to the wider world. The State of Israel has no choice but to fulfil the obligation to act in defence of its citizens and will continue to do so everywhere it is required to do so.”

Following the attack, CNN reported that several of Iran’s top officials, including senior military leaders and nuclear scientists, were killed.

In response, Iran reportedly launched loitering munitions and missile strikes on Tel Aviv. Israel has since continued its counterstrikes.

MHA slams states, UTs for lax enforcement of ‘Support to Poor Prisoners’ scheme

MHA slams states, UTs for lax enforcement of ‘Support to Poor Prisoners’ scheme

New Delhi, June 14: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has expressed serious concern over the poor implementation of the “Support to Poor Prisoners” scheme, which was launched in May 2023 to aid underprivileged inmates languishing in jails due to their inability to pay bail or fines.

In a communication addressed to Principal Secretaries and Director Generals/Inspectors General of Prisons across all States and Union Territories, the MHA has noted that despite clear guidelines and funds being made available, the scheme remains largely unimplemented in most regions.

The scheme aims to extend financial support to eligible prisoners who are unable to secure release solely due to financial hardship. It mandates the formation of Empowered Committees at the district level and Oversight Committees at the state level to identify beneficiaries and sanction funds accordingly.

The ministry has highlighted that while a few states and UTs have taken action, the majority have neither identified eligible prisoners nor held regular committee meetings. Consequently, the allocated funds remain unutilized.

“Effective implementation of the scheme can not only help the poor but also reduce overcrowding in prisons,” the MHA noted, urging state authorities to act swiftly and hold regular Empowered Committee meetings.

The letter, signed by Director (Prison Reforms) Arun Sobti, reiterates the Centre’s appeal for coordinated efforts to deliver justice to those trapped in jails due to poverty, underlining the humanitarian and administrative value of the initiative. [KNT]
