Step toward reducing 'Dil ki Duri': Farooq Abdullah on train to Kashmir

Srinagar, June 13: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Friday urged the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure the safety of Kashmiri students in Iran, which was attacked by Israel.

Israel carried out strikes early Friday that took out top military officers and hit nuclear and missile sites in Iran, raising the potential for an all-out war between the two bitter Middle East adversaries. It appeared to be the most significant attack Iran has faced since its 1980s war with Iraq.

The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister also called on Israel and Iran to exercise restraint and avoid any further escalation.

“Every step must be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of Kashmiri students studying in Iran. Their families are deeply worried, and we stand with them in this difficult time,” he said.

Abdullah emphasised the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving tensions between the two nations.

“Both sides must refrain from taking any escalatory steps. Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised to work towards de-escalation and address the underlying issues,” the NC president said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, the external affairs ministry said India is “deeply concerned” over the recent developments between Iran and Israel and is “closely monitoring” the evolving situation.

Gold futures bounce Rs 2,011 to breach Rs 1 lakh-mark; hit all time high

Gold climbs Rs 1,400 to Rs 96,450 per 10 g; silver jumps Rs 1,000

New Delhi, June 13: Gold prices surged for the third consecutive session on Friday, bouncing Rs 2,011 to hit an all-time high of Rs 1,00,403 per 10 grams, as a weakening rupee and escalating tensions in the Middle East drove investors to the safe haven asset.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), the most-traded August delivery contracts of the precious metal zoomed Rs 2,011, or 2.04 per cent, to hit a record high of Rs 1,00,403 per 10 grams in the morning trade.

Later, it traded at Rs 1,00,145 per 10 grams, up Rs 1,753, or 1.78 per cent, with an open interest of 16,602 lots on the bourse.

Gold future prices had on April 22 surged Rs 2,048 to hit a fresh record high of Rs 1,00,000 per 10 grams.

Subsequently, the October contract of the yellow metal jumped Rs 1,970, or 1.98 per cent, to hit a fresh peak of Rs 1,01,295 per 10 grams on the MCX.

Analysts said the sharp rally in gold prices was primarily driven by a weaker rupee and heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which spurred safe-haven demand for the precious metal.

On Friday, rupee declined 56 paise to 86.08 against the US dollar in the initial trade due to a spike in global oil prices and a firm dollar amid rising tensions in the Middle East following Israel’s attack on Iran’s nuclear sites.

On the global front, gold futures rose USD 41.62 per ounce, or 1.22 per cent, to trade at USD 3,444.02 per ounce.

“Gold prices rallied sharply amid escalating Israel-Iran tensions, boosting safe-haven demand. In the morning session, the precious metal breached the USD 3,420 per ounce-mark and hit 6-week highs,” Rahul Kalantri, Vice-President of Commodities at Mehta Equities, said.

Kalantri further said the rally in gold was further supported by the US producer price index (PPI) and core PPI data, which indicated cooling inflation in the US.

The data reinforced investor expectations that the US Federal Reserve may begin easing its monetary policy stance in the coming months.

Blood transfusion cornerstone of effective healthcare, emergency response: WHO

Blood transfusion cornerstone of effective healthcare, emergency response: WHO

New Delhi, June 13: Blood transfusion is the cornerstone of effective healthcare and emergency responses, said Saima Wazed, Regional Director for WHO South-East Asia on Friday, ahead of the World Blood Donor Day.

World Blood Donor Day is marked annually on June 14. This year the theme is “Give blood, give hope: together we save lives.”

The day honours the silent heroes among us — voluntary, unpaid blood donors — whose simple yet powerful act of donating their blood saves countless lives each day.

Wazed noted that to build resilient national health systems it is essential to have the critical and continuous need for safe blood and blood products.

Yet many people, especially in low- and middle-income countries, do not have access to safe and timely transfusion services.

“Blood transfusion is a cornerstone of effective healthcare and emergency response. From mothers experiencing complications during childbirth, to children suffering from severe anaemia to patients undergoing surgery or living with chronic blood disorders like thalassemia, haemophilia, and sickle-cell disease — blood saves lives,” said the Regional Director.

“In crisis situations, such as natural disasters or conflict, timely access to safe blood is often the difference between life and death,” she added.

Wazed said that strong national systems and a stable base of voluntary, unpaid donors who are willing to give blood regularly are key to achieving universal access to safe blood.

Meanwhile, the Regional Director noted that all countries in the WHO South-East Asia have developed national blood policies aligned with the global health body’s recommendations on blood safety.

These policies advocate for nationally coordinated blood transfusion services based on 100 per cent voluntary non-remunerated blood donations (VNRD), and adherence to national or internationally recognised blood standards.

“Currently, nearly 50 per cent of our Member States have achieved close to 100 per cent VNRD coverage, contributing significantly to the blood supply required for national health systems. Across our region, approximately 82 per cent of all donated blood is sourced from voluntary, unpaid donors, reflecting strong community engagement and donor motivation,” Wazed said.

Further, Wazed stated that all blood collected in the SE region is screened for transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) and tested for the necessary serological parameters.

She urged all governments, health authorities to renew support for national blood transfusion programmes.

“On World Blood Donor Day 2025, let us remember that each blood donation is not just a medical act — it is an act of compassion, commitment, and hope. It is a lifeline to someone, somewhere, who may never meet their donor, but whose life was touched forever,” Wazed said.

Omar Abdullah condemns Israel's 'unjustified' strike on Iran, regrets 'silence' of Western powers

Srinagar, June 13: In the aftermath of Israeli aerial strikes, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday requested the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to ensure the well-being and safety of Kashmiri students stuck in Iran.

CM Omar Abdullah said on X, “Requesting @MEAIndia to urgently ensure safety and well being of Kashmiri students stuck in Iran. Their families are deeply worried and we stand with them in this difficult time. Every step must be taken to safeguard our students.”

Various Sunni and Shia Muslim organizations of Kashmir have condemned the Israeli strikes in Iran in which two top generals and nuclear scientists of Iran were killed.

Kashmir Valley has a good number of students studying medicine and other professions in Iran. In addition, a number of local doctors and engineers are working in Iran in various capacities.

The large Shia Muslim community of Jammu and Kashmir has a deep affinity with Iranian Muslims, who are predominantly Shia Muslims.

A number of local religious organizations have organized meetings and gatherings to condemn the Israeli action against Iran. In condemnation of the Israeli action in Iran, both Sunni and Shia Muslims have voiced deep concern and condemned the development with one voice.

It must be mentioned here that almost all the high-ranking scholars of the Shia community belong to Iran, and their interpretation of religion is followed obediently by the Shia Muslims in India.

Any development happening in Iran is deeply followed by the Shia Muslims in Kashmir.

Israel launched major airstrikes against Iran in the early hours of Friday morning, significantly escalating tensions in the region and raising the specter of a broader conflict between the long-standing rivals. The attacks come amid mounting concerns over Tehran’s nuclear programmed and its perceived threat to Israeli national security.

In retaliation, Iran has launched more than 100 drones towards Israel.

Several Arab countries issued strong condemnations of Israel’s attack on Iran, and the US has called the attack a ‘unilateral action’, asserting that America had no involvement.

Aga Syed Hassan Condemns Israeli Strikes on Iran, Calls It a Violation of International Law

Aga Syed Hassan Condemns Israeli Strikes on Iran, Calls It a Violation of International Law

Budgam, June 13: President of Anjuman-e-Sharie Shian, Aga Syed Hassan Al-Moosavi Al-Safavi, on Friday strongly condemned the Israeli airstrikes on Iran, terming them a blatant violation of international law and diplomatic norms.

Leading a protest against the Israeli assault, Aga Syed Hassan said the attack reflects Israel’s growing aggression and disregard for global codes of conduct.

Speaking to reporters during the protest, the prominent religious leader said that Iran was targeted solely for its vocal and principled support to the people of Gaza and Palestine, who continue to suffer under occupation and bombardment. He added that Israel has now “crossed all limits” by launching direct military attacks on Iranian territory.

“The Israeli strikes on Iran are unjust, provocative, and an open challenge to the international community. It is not just an assault on one country but an assault on justice, law, and the shared values of humanity,” Aga Syed Hassan said.

He warned that such aggressive actions could plunge the entire region into a wider war, endangering global peace and security. He called upon the United Nations, OIC, and other international human rights organizations to intervene immediately and take concrete steps to de-escalate tensions.

Aga Syed Hassan also highlighted the need for the world community to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the long-pending issue of Palestine. He said ignoring the root cause, Israel’s continued occupation and oppression, will only lead to more bloodshed and instability.

“Peace in the Middle East will remain elusive unless justice is ensured for the people of Palestine. The global silence on the Gaza massacre is as dangerous as the aggression itself,” he said.

The protest, held peacefully under the banner of Anjuman-e-Sharie Shian, witnessed participation from clerics and local residents who raised slogans against the Israeli offensive and expressed solidarity with the people of Iran and Palestine.

Aga Syed Hassan concluded by urging all conscientious nations and civil society groups across the globe to raise their voices against what he described as “Israeli arrogance backed by impunity” and work collectively for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. [KNT]

Mass autopsies underway at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital

Ahmedabad, June 13:  Post-mortem examinations are underway at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital after the Air India plane with 242 onboard crashed minutes after takeoff from here, officials said on Friday. According to officials, a team of 70 to 80 doctors, including medical professionals from Primary and Community Health Centres across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Anand, and Nadiad and Civil Hospital staff, have been working tirelessly since Thursday evening.

After identification, the bodies are being handed over to grieving families with full dignity and sensitivity. As of Friday morning, five victims have been identified and their remains returned to their families. Among them are two individuals from Rajasthan, two from Bhavnagar, and one from Madhya Pradesh. The process continues as more relatives arrive to assist in identifying their loved ones among the deceased.

The hospital administration has urged the relatives and close family members of the deceased to submit DNA samples to facilitate timely identification. Officials say the DNA testing is being used to identify remains, as many bodies were badly burned in the tragedy.

Civil Hospital has released emergency helpline numbers for those seeking information about patients or the deceased: 6357373831, 6357373841 Meanwhile, Anjali Rupani, wife of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, arrived in Ahmedabad from London on Friday morning, a day after the tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171 that claimed her husband’s life. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi received her at the airport and offered his condolences. The same Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner (AI-171) that crashed had previously experienced major technical problems just a month earlier, leading to the cancellation of a scheduled Ahmedabad-to-London flight. At the time, passengers voiced serious concerns over the airline’s reliance on ageing aircraft, pointing to repeated technical failures that disrupted their travel. On that particular day, passengers of flight AI-171 endured a frustrating ordeal. The flight, which was slated to depart from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1.10 p.m., was cancelled after travellers were left waiting inside the aircraft for more than two hours. Many had arrived early, expecting a smooth international departure. Boarding began only at 2.00 p.m., and those on board faced stifling conditions as the air conditioning shut off intermittently. Despite repeated questions, no clear information was provided by the airline crew regarding the delay or a revised departure time. Eventually, passengers were informed that the flight was being called off due to a technical issue. While Air India did announce full refunds, passengers expressed frustration.
