Refresher course for sports officials begins in Nagrota

Jammu, Jun 11: The Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) on Wednesday launched a two-week refresher and orientation course for physical education officials at the Youth Hostel Nagrota.

As per a statement, the programme, inaugurated jointly by incoming DG YSS Anuradha Gupta and outgoing DG Rajinder Singh Tara, brings together around 80 PETs, PEMs, and PELs from across the Union Territory for specialised training in volleyball, kho-kho, and thang-ta.

The sports disciplines in which the officials are being trained include volleyball, kho-kho and thang-ta.

The department has named 10 trained and expert officials as the resource persons in the course and has nominated Altaf Hussain, departmental vigilance officer and warden of the youth hostel in Nagrota, as the one in charge of the camp.

While addressing the officials, both the dignitaries said, “Refresher training is important because it reinforces learning, prevents knowledge decay, and ensures employees maintain current skills and information.” “It helps employees adapt to changes, improves performance, and reduces the risk of errors. Refresher training also boosts morale and motivation by demonstrating an organisation’s commitment to employee development.”

“The concept of ‘infusing discipline and perfection’ among teachers is complex and can be approached in a way that focuses on excellence and continuous improvement rather than striving for unattainable flawlessness.” “Instead of aiming for perfection, teachers can focus on developing essential skills and qualities that contribute to effective teaching and student learning,” maintained administrative officers.

The DG Sports served strict directions to the concerned officers and officials to make an online portal for keeping the record of meritorious athletes and trained officials to yield better results.

She advised the Activities Section of the Directorate to classify the sporting disciplines and take initiatives with regard to holding activities in accordance with the merit of the athletes in a specific discipline in a particular area.

While advising the concerned officers to tap the talent at the grassroots level, Tara said the focus should be on unearthing talent in traditional games in hilly areas, the youth of which are naturally well-built.

The incoming Director General of Youth Services and Sports asked the trainers (experts) for their inputs for the betterment of the system and the experts of various games (resource persons) to present a roadmap.

Anuradha said that she observed a streamlined system in the department under the dynamic leadership of Tara, adding that she will leave no stone unturned in making the department flourish.

Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner has history of technical issues globally

"Ahmedabad airport now available for flight operations," says Civil Aviation Ministry following Air India plane crash

New Delhi, June 12: The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, known for its advanced technology and fuel efficiency, has reportedly faced several technical and safety issues worldwide over the years.

On Thursday, one of these aircraft, operated by Air India as flight AI 171, crashed shortly after takeoff. The plane, headed to London’s Gatwick Airport, was carrying 242 people on board, including 10 crew members.

While the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is widely used for long-haul international flights and is considered a modern and efficient aircraft, it has had a history of safety concerns.

In 2013, the entire global fleet of Dreamliners was grounded after incidents of lithium-ion battery fires, including one on a parked Japan Airlines jet in Boston and another mid-air emergency in Japan.

These incidents led the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to suspend Dreamliner operations until Boeing redesigned the battery system.

In 2024, Boeing again came under scrutiny after whistleblower Sam Salehpour, an engineer at the company, reportedly told the US Senate about structural problems in the Dreamliner’s fuselage.

He claimed that small gaps and improper assembly could cause early wear and possible structural failure. The FAA launched an investigation, which is still ongoing.

Despite being marketed as one of the safest and most advanced aircraft in the skies, the Dreamliner has been linked to several technical faults.

In March this year, a Boeing 787-9, operated by LATAM Airlines, experienced a sudden altitude drop mid-flight, injuring 50 people. The cause was later identified as a malfunction in the cockpit seat.

Over the years, pilots have also reported issues such as engine icing, fuel leaks, generator failures, and electrical system faults.

According to Flightradar24 data, the plane that crashed on Thursday made its first flight in 2013 and was delivered to Air India in January 2014.

The cause of the plane crash in Ahmedabad is still under investigation by Air India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The Central government has promised full support for rescue and relief efforts. The number of casualties was yet to be confirmed.

Bangladesh wanted good ties with India, but 'something always went wrong': Yunus

London, June 12:  Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has said that his interim government wanted good relations with India, but “something always went wrong”.

During an interaction with Chatham House think tank director Bronwen Maddox in London on Wednesday, Yunus addressed a wide range of issues including bilateral ties with India and the democratic roadmap for the country, starting with a “July Charter” next month.

Maddox referenced an informal diplomatic note issued to India seeking deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s extradition and sought an update on the matter.

“This will continue… we want the whole process to be very legal, very proper… We want to build the best of relationship with India. It’s our neighbour, we don’t want to have any kind of basic problem with them,” Yunus said.

“But somehow things go wrong every time because of all the fake news coming from the Indian press… and many people say it has connections with policymakers on the top,” he said.

“So, this is what makes Bangladesh very jittery, very, very angry. We try to get over this anger but a whole barrage of things keeps happening in cyberspace. We can’t just get away from that… suddenly they say something, do something, anger comes back,” he said.

“This is our big task, to make sure we can have at least a peaceful life to go on with our life. To create the life we are dreaming of,” he added.

On an audience question about the “unclear role of India” about Hasina, Yunus responded: “All the anger (against Hasina) has now transferred to India because she went there.”

“When I had a chance to talk to Prime Minister Modi, I simply said: you want to host her, I cannot force you to abandon that policy. But please help us in making sure she doesn’t speak to Bangladeshi people the way she is doing (online). She announces on such and such date, such and such hour, she will speak and the whole (of) Bangladesh gets very angry,” he said.

Yunus claimed Prime Minister Modi told him that Hasina’s social media activities cannot be controlled.

“It’s (an) explosive situation, you can’t just walk away by saying it’s the social media,” he added.

The close ties between India and Bangladesh came under strain after Hasina’s ouster.

She faces multiple cases in Bangladesh after being ousted on August 5 last year following a major student-led agitation in the country, which forced her to flee Dhaka.

Yunus, the 84-year-old Nobel Laureate, who took over as the head of an interim government in Bangladesh in August last year, announced last week that national elections will be held by the first half of 2026.

Asked if he would consider being part of the elected government, Yunus replied: “No way.”

He arrived on Tuesday for a four-day visit to the UK, where he was greeted with protests by Hasina’s Awami League party members in the UK. He is expected to meet King Charles III and senior members of the British government during the visit.

International journal recognizes breakthrough research by Kashmiri dermatologist Dr Mir Shahnawaz

Srinagar, June 11: In a moment of pride for Indian and Kashmiri Dermatology, a breakthrough clinical study authored by Dr Mir Shahnawaz, a renowned Dermatologist and Founder & Director of DERMIS Skin & Hair Clinic, Bemina, has been recognized and published in the internationally acclaimed CUREUS Journal, indexed on PubMed and hosted by Springer.

The study, titled “Clinical Assessment of Abrocitinib, Tofacitinib, and Cyclosporine in Adult Patients With Moderate to Severe Atopic Dermatitis: A Retrospective Analysis”, is the first comparative real-world research from India to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of these systemic therapies—most notably Abrocitinib, a selective JAK-1 inhibitor representing a new class of targeted immunomodulatory drugs.

Dr Shahnawaz is among the very few Dermatologists in India to have personally used and strongly advocated Abrocitinib as an effective and well-tolerated treatment option for patients with moderate to severe Atopic Dermatitis.

The international publication of this study not only brings recognition to the growing academic contributions of Kashmiri clinicians but also fills a critical gap in Indian dermatology literature by providing region-specific data on emerging therapies.

Covid-19 virus protein triggers immune attack on healthy cells: Study

Covid-19 virus protein triggers immune attack on healthy cells: Study

New Delhi, June 11: Amid a fresh wave of Covid-19, Israeli researchers have discovered that a protein from the SARS-CoV-2 virus can cause the immune system to attack healthy cells mistakenly.

The study, published in the journal Cell Reports, sheds light on how severe Covid complications may occur and suggests new ways to prevent immune-driven damage from the virus, Xinhua news agency reported.

Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem found that the virus’s nucleocapsid protein (NP), which normally helps package the virus’s genetic material inside infected cells, can spread to nearby uninfected epithelial cells.

Once on the surface of these healthy cells, NP would be mistakenly identified by the immune system as a threat. The immune system then deploys anti-NP antibodies, which mark these uninfected cells for destruction.

The process triggers the classical complement pathway, a part of the immune response that leads to inflammation and tissue damage, contributing to severe Covid symptoms and possibly long Covid.

Using lab-grown cells, advanced imaging, and samples from Covid-19 patients, the researchers found that NP binds to a type of molecule on cell surfaces. The binding causes the protein to cluster on healthy cells, further confusing the immune system.

The study also found that the drug enoxaparin — a common blood thinner and heparin analog — blocks NP from sticking to healthy cells.

In both lab tests and patient samples, enoxaparin helped prevent immune attacks by occupying the binding sites that NP uses.

According to the researchers, the discovery may offer new hope for reducing immune-related complications in Covid and potentially other viral infections.

Meanwhile, a newly identified Covid variant known as NB.1.8.1 has been recently spreading rapidly across multiple parts of the world, raising fresh concerns.

The variant, which belongs to the Omicron family, was first detected in January 2025 and has since reached countries including India, the US, the UK, Australia, China, Maldives, and Egypt.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially labelled it a “Variant Under Monitoring,” meaning it is spreading fast enough to warrant attention, but not enough to be classified as a major threat.

Only Aadhaar authenticated users can book Tatkal tickets on IRCTC website from July 1

0
Massive public response, no seats available for next 10 days”: Katra Station Superintendent on Vande Bharat train

New Delhi, June 11: The Ministry of Railways announced on Wednesday that with effect from July 1, Tatkal tickets booked through IRCTC’s official website and mobile app will be available only to users authenticated with Aadhaar.

Further, Aadhaar-based OTP authentication will become mandatory for Tatkal bookings made online starting July 15.

Tatkal tickets booked at computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and through authorised agents will require OTP authentication sent to the mobile number provided by the user at the time of booking. This provision will also come into effect from July 15.

To prevent bulk bookings during the critical opening period, authorised ticketing agents of Indian Railways will not be permitted to book opening-day Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window.

For AC classes, this restriction applies from 10 a.m. to 10.30 a.m., and for non-AC classes, from 11 a.m. to 11.30 a.m.

These changes are being implemented to improve transparency in Tatkal bookings and to ensure that the benefits of the scheme reach genuine end users, according to the official statement.

The CRIS (Centre for Railway Information Services) and IRCTC have been instructed to make necessary system modifications and inform all Zonal Railways and departments concerned accordingly.

The Ministry of Railways has urged all passengers to take note of these changes and asked everyone to ensure Aadhaar linkage with their IRCTC user profiles to avoid inconvenience.

The steps are being implemented with an aim to ensure fair and transparent access to Tatkal tickets and to safeguard the interests of genuine passengers. The changes will enhance user authentication and reduce misuse of the scheme, the statement added.

Indian Railways had cracked down on misuse of Tatkal bookings and identified and deactivated 2.5 crore fake IDs and flagged another 20 lakh for revalidation. Some of these accounts were found to be using disposable email addresses, which were being used to hoard tickets and sell them at inflated prices. IRCTC is utilising AI-driven tools to monitor and detect bot activity, which was being used by touts to book tickets in bulk and then make genuine travellers pay huge amounts for the tickets.
