Katra-Sangaldan train carries 2nd instalment of 4 tonnes of flood relief for distribution

Jammu, Sep 10: Special flood relief train, being run by Jammu Railway Division, between Katra and Sangaldan on Wednesday carried a second consignment of 4 tonnes of relief material for distribution among the flood-affected people, suffering on account of connectivity issues, post recent rain-induced calamities.

Under the initiative, which commenced on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, 8 tonnes of relief material for distribution were transported, as a maiden consignment through this special train service, which was launched on September 8, basically to transport stranded people.

These special trains will run till September 12, 2025.

Meanwhile, the initiative also won the admiration of the Union IT, Information and Broadcasting, and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. “Flood special trains are running to the flood-affected regions of Jammu, transporting both essential relief materials and affected passengers. Extending timely support to people in Katra, Reasi, Bakkal, Dugga, Sawalkote, and Sangaldan,” Vaishnaw posted on ‘X.’

On Monday, the Jammu Railway Division of the Northern Railway had announced that the Katra-Sangaldan train, which commenced on September 8 to provide reprieve to stranded people due to the blockade of roads in Jammu Division, would also carry relief material for distribution among the flood-affected.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Jammu Railway Division, Uchit Singhal, said, “The first consignment of about 8 tonnes of relief material was sent to the respective stations on the route of these trains on Tuesday. Today, around 4 tonnes of relief material for distribution were sent.”

Earlier, Union Minister of State in PMO Jitendra Singh had asserted that in the absence of road connectivity beyond Udhampur, special arrangements were made to transport essential supplies through the newly introduced Katra-Sangaldan train.

“These essentials can be carried forward by road to districts Doda and Kishtwar as well,” he said.

The special train, which started its run from September 8, 2025, is being operated between Katra to Sangaldan and Sangaldan to Katra.

Uchit Singhal informed that through these trains, the Railway administration and district administration would coordinate with each other, and about 1200 tonnes of relief material, including dry ration consisting of wheat and rice, would be widely distributed under the Public Distribution System at all the stations on the route.

What’s in a name?

What’s in a name?

Srinagar, Sep 10: What’s in a name?

A great deal, if you ask parents across the world.

A new international study by NameKun.com has revealed that despite cultural differences and borders, certain names carry a universal appeal, dominating baby naming charts in dozens of countries simultaneously.

According to the research, which examined the top 100 baby names in 139 countries, two timeless classics emerged as the world’s most popular names in 2025: Maria for girls and David for boys.

Maria is the undisputed queen of girl names, appearing in 114 countries and ranking in the top 10 in 36 of them.

“It’s a name that transcends language barriers and faith traditions,” said baby naming experts at NameKun.com.

From Europe to Latin America, and even parts of Asia, Maria has become a universal choice.

For boys, David takes the crown, appearing in 113 countries and holding a top-10 spot in 59.

With biblical roots and global recognition, David has proven both traditional and adaptable, finding fans from Mexico to Morocco.

The study also highlights a contrast in name lengths.

The shortest girl’s name in the top 100 is Ana, just three letters but steeped in elegance.

On the other end is Stephanie, a name of nine letters that still manages to make the global cut.

For boys, Ali takes the spot as the briefest international name, while Christian stretches out as the longest.

Beyond the champions, the study revealed a fascinating spread of names that have crossed oceans and languages:

Experts point to globalisation, pop culture, and even professional advantages as drivers behind this trend.

“International names benefit children socially and professionally,” said researchers at NameKun.com. “They are relevant across cultures, easy to pronounce in multiple languages, and even reduce bias in hiring processes.”

The study cites earlier research by the National Bureau of Economic Research (2003), which found that job applicants with widely recognised or international names received significantly more callbacks than those with unusual or culturally specific names.

With more than 8336 distinct names gathered from almost 27,600 entries, the research establishes that though parents tend to search for uniqueness, they also tend to choose those names which link children to the global community.

Perhaps William Shakespeare’s famous question from the play Romeo and Juliet, “What’s in a name?” now has an answer.

In 2025, everything is about identity, opportunity, and belonging to the world.

Restoration work on Katra-Jammu-Kathua track in full swing, 4 train services to resume soon

Restoration work on Katra-Jammu-Kathua track in full swing, 4 train services to resume soon

Jammu, Sep 10: More than 250 workers are working in full swing to restore the Katra-Jammu-Kathua rail track, where key installations have been damaged by floods, with officials expecting that four train services would be resumed soon.

Top railway officials, led by Railway Safety Commissioner (CRS) of Northern Railway, Dinesh Chandra Deswal, inspected the affected bridges and reviewed the restoration work on Wednesday.

“More than 250 workers are engaged in repairing key bridges damaged by the floods, including Bridge number 232 over the Chakki River between Pathankot Cantt and Kandrodi Block Section, which suffered significant damage. Work is progressing on a war footing to restore normal train services at the earliest,” an official said.

Train services in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh were severely affected due to flash floods and heavy rains that began on August 26. “In an effort to ease travel for stranded passengers, special flood relief trains were operated on August 28 and 30,” he added.

“Uttar Kranti and Sealdah Express trains are running. In the coming days, we will start four trains in phase two. These trains are Swaraj Express, Pooja Express, Vande Bharat Express, and Andaman Express,” he said.

Flood special trains continue to run in the affected areas of Jammu Division, transporting essential relief materials as well as affected passengers, the officials said. “These services are providing timely support to people in Katra, Reasi, Bakkal, Dugga, Sawalkote, and Sangaldan,” the official said.

The trains have so far ferried over 3,000 passengers since September 8. The initiative was widely appreciated by passengers for providing a safe and convenient travel option while road transport remained severely disrupted due to the floods.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Uchit Singhal, said this initiative greatly facilitated the movement of flood-affected people.

Following heavy rains and waterlogging in the Jammu Division of Northern Railway, flood-like conditions caused severe disruption of rail traffic in the region.

“As a result, operations of all trains running in the Jammu Division were suspended. The intense flooding badly affected several railway bridges,” an official said.

Railway Safety Commissioner (CRS) Deswal, along with Principal Executive Director (RDSO) S K Sapra, Chief Bridge Engineer R P Singh, and Divisional Railway Manager Vivek Kumar, conducted a detailed inspection of the affected bridges.

“The purpose of the inspection was to assess the extent of the damage caused by heavy rains and flooding, and to expedite the completion of repair work to restore full rail operations in Jammu Division,” a railway spokesperson said.

The officials gave strict instructions to ensure the timely and quality completion of restoration work, prioritising passenger safety. The railway administration remains committed to restoring normal train services at the earliest possible time.

Kashmir hotel, restaurant owners decry ‘unsafe mutton’ controversy; demand govt intervention

Rotten meat floods markets: FDA destroys over 3500 kg in Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep 10: The Kashmir Hotel and Restaurant Owners Association (KHAROA) has expressed deep concern over what it described as the government’s “thundering silence” on the issue of allegedly unsafe mutton being supplied to the Valley.Kashmir tourism

In a statement, the Association said that certain officials of the administration had created a misleading impression that imported unsafe mutton was making its way into restaurants and eateries across Kashmir. “This narrative was floated without any investigation, probe, or establishment of a supply chain that could have shown how this so-called unsafe mutton landed in established restaurants and eateries,” KHAROA said.

The Association further accused some enforcement officials of resorting to arbitrary practices. “They were declaring meat preparations as unsafe or rotten simply by touching them, as if their hands were equipped with instant testing machines and barometers,” it said.

KHAROA noted that its office-bearers had raised these flaws with the authorities, but no corrective measures had been taken. “We had strongly demanded that the government name and shame the unscrupulous elements responsible. However, no names have been disclosed so far, creating confusion and mistrust among the public,” the statement added.

The Association warned that the failure to expose the culprits has dealt a heavy blow to Kashmir’s hospitality sector. “The uncertainty has led to a huge decline in footfall at restaurants and eateries. Businesses are suffering heavy losses, and this directly threatens employment in the sector. Members of KHAROA are under tremendous stress,” it said.

The body also questioned the selective silence of government agencies. “Is naming and shaming restricted only to JK Bank? Why are the black sheep involved in the mutton scandal being protected?” KHAROA asked, insisting that the guilty should be severely punished, while honest restaurant owners—who had become “unfortunate victims of propaganda”—must be cleared without delay.Local events calendar

Pointing out that the sector is still reeling from the fallout of the recent Pahalgam incident, KHAROA said the mutton controversy has further crippled the hotel and restaurant industry in Kashmir. “The damage is immense and may prove irreparable if immediate measures are not taken,” it said.

Urging the highest levels of government to intervene, KHAROA appealed for steps to restore public confidence and safeguard livelihoods. “This propaganda has already caused enough damage. The authorities must act—and act fast—not only to instil confidence in customers but also protect an industry that provides jobs to thousands across Kashmir,” the statement concluded.

Drones manufactured by Garuda Aerospace ferried supplies to cut-off areas in J&K, HP during floods

Jammu, Sep 10: Drones manufactured by Garuda Aerospace played a key role in ferrying supplies to flood-hit people in cut-off, mountainous areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh during the recent rain fury that began from the end of August.

Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir were badly affected by heavy rainfall, floods and landslides, causing loss of lives and huge damage to public and private infrastructure in the region since August 26.

“Garuda Aerospace has given more than 10 drones to the Indian Army for the ongoing flood-relief operations in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh,” founder and CEO of the company Agnishwar Jayaprakash said.

He further said the drones have delivered 300 kg of supplies to ensure timely assistance for stranded communities. “The Garuda Aerospace drones are also being used for aerial surveys to assess the extent of damage, identify vulnerable areas and coordinate relief efforts more effectively,” he added.

In Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu, Garuda Aerospace, India’s leading drone manufacturer, has deployed two delivery drones to transport essential supplies, including medicines, food and water, to areas cut off due to floods.

“Despite a highly-challenging terrain, involving narrow valleys, steep slopes and disrupted roads, the drones continue to ensure timely delivery of critical relief materials, directly supporting affected communities and local authorities in their rescue efforts,” Jayaprakash was quoted as saying in a statement.

Garuda Aerospace has also deployed 10 Jawan drones to transport essential supplies to Chilla village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, which was cut off by floods and landslides.

“In collaboration with the Indian Army and the Kathua district administration, the drones successfully delivered supplies, including food, cooking oil, medicines and other provisions, to several stranded families,” Jayaprakash said.

“Garuda Aerospace has made a significant impact by deploying drones for various disaster operations and supported the government. As a proud citizen of India, I am honoured to contribute to these efforts by deploying drones during emergencies, ensuring timely and effective assistance. Garuda Aerospace remains committed to serving as a first responder whenever the need arises,” he added.

The company has consistently stepped up during crises with its innovative drone solutions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, in partnership with Swiggy, its emergency drones delivered medicines and vaccines to hospitals, the statement said.

“In 2021, White Knight drones supported ISRO by delivering essential medical supplies to hospitals. The company has also deployed drones for major relief operations, from the Chamoli glacier burst in Uttarakhand to locust control in Rajasthan, and flood relief in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh,” Jayaprakash said.

In 2024, Garuda drones delivered food, water and medicines to rain-hit, inaccessible areas in Chennai. “Most recently, in 2025, Garuda’s consumer drone Droni assisted the NDRF during the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel collapse in Telangana, providing real-time mapping and video feeds that helped locate trapped workers under hazardous, low-visibility conditions,” the statement said.
