Rotten Meat Seizure Fallout: Scrutiny needed in production of substandard spices, artificial milk, contaminated mineral water: Zuhaib Yousf Mir

Srinagar, Aug 12: PDP leader Zuhaib Yousf Mir has issued a strong call for expanded food safety measures in Jammu and Kashmir amid the ongoing rotten meat scandal that has shocked the region. The substandard, rotten, unbranded, and stale meat scam unfolding in Kashmir evokes profound alarm, underscoring the moral degradation plaguing our society. Over the past 15-16 years, such practices have directly fueled the rise of lifestyle diseases and even fatal ones like cancer, said a statement.

Mir commended the government’s stringent actions “against these morally bankrupt perpetrators, bolstered by fatwas from religious scholars and relentless pursuits by food safety officers”.

“Beyond the current raids on rotten meat, he urged comprehensive investigations and similar operations in the masala (condiments), milk, and mineral water industries. Recent revelations—such as reports of worms detected in mineral water and the arrest of a man in Baramulla for producing counterfeit chemical milk using potassium hydroxide pellets highlight the urgent crisis,” he said.

Food safety is paramount to public health, and the J&K Government must rigorously enforce regulations through inspections while educating consumers to make informed choices, thereby mitigating risks and fostering well-being, he added.

Mir emphasized the need for a vigilant, proactive system active year-round, regardless of scandals. This requires dedicated budgetary allocations for checkpoints, testing labs, and manpower in every district, safeguarding the health of our people for generations to come.

SC to hear on July 24 Maharashtra govt’s plea against Bombay HC verdict SC-Train blast

New Delhi, Aug 12: The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that the inclusion and exclusion of citizens and non-citizens from electoral rolls falls within the remit of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and agreed with its view that Aadhaar is not conclusive proof of citizenship, reports Bar & Bench.

A Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi was hearing petitions challenging the ECI’s June 24 directive for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of state assembly elections.

The petitioners argued that the process could lead to large-scale disenfranchisement, while the ECI maintained that the revision was necessary due to migration, demographic changes, and outdated rolls. The court also took note of submissions regarding errors in the draft roll and disputes over acceptable proof of identity. Proceedings will continue on Wednesday.

Parliament passes new Income Tax Bill

New Delhi, Aug 12: Parliament on Tuesday passed the new Income Tax Bill, with the Rajya Sabha returning the legislation to the Lok Sabha.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the two money bills — The Income Tax Bill, 2025, and The Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The Rajya Sabha returned the legislation with a voice vote to the lower house.

The Income Tax Bill will replace the Income Tax Act, 1961.

Explaining the reasons for bringing the new income tax law, Sitharaman said some parts of the Income Tax Act, 1961, have become outdated and hence a new legislation was needed.

She stressed that the new income tax law aims to make the language simple and does not introduce any new rate.

Sitharaman also lashed out at the Opposition for not participating in the discussion on important bills like the income tax law.

“I am shocked that the Opposition doesn’t want to participate,” she said.

Opposition parties staged a walkout in the Rajya Sabha, as they did in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Opposition parties had agreed in the Business Advisory Committee to 16 hours of debate each in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on the Income Tax Bill, she pointed out.

She also expressed gratitude to the Select Committee of Parliament, which scrutinised the bill.

She further said a total of 75,000 person hours have gone into the drafting of the Bill.

ACB unearths major land scam in Jammu, files multiple FIRs against tempering revenue records

ACB arrests in-charge Police Post GMC Jammu, driver for accepting bribe

Srinagar, Aug 12: Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau has achieved a major success in extracting one of the major land scams in J&K, wherein custodian land in Asarwan, Mishriwala and Bhalwal areas of Jammu district has been found usurped by the land mafia in connivance with Form Alf Holders and the officers/officials of Custodian and Revenue departments.

A statement issued by the agency said that inputs were received that custodian land in thousands of kanals situated at Asarwan, Mishriwala and Bhalwal Jammu, has been fraudulently grabbed by the land grabbers/gangsters in connivance with the revenue and police officers/officials. The revenue records have been tempered and land has been sold to various persons.

On the basis of the inputs received by ACB verification was initiated and on the basis of the verification conducted earlier it was found that more than 600 kanals of custodian land was shown allotted to the displaced persons through fraudulent means by the officers/officials of revenue department in connivance with the land grabbers/ Form Alaf holders. Accordingly, 16 case FIRs already stand registered by the ACB in which the investigation is in progress.

The statement said that during the course of verification it has been found that displaced persons from POJK were already allotted land in their favour but even then kith and kin of these families although not entitled as already allotted land being Form Alaf holders, in connivance with the concerned Patwaries/ Girdawars/ Naib Tehsildars/ Tehsildars of Revenue Department got mutations of additional land at Bhalwal area of District Jammu attested in their favour either without any Govt./ PRO order or on fake Govt./ PRO order. During verification it has also been found that no such orders of allotment of land were issued by the office of the PRO. These persons after getting mutation of lands in their favour alienated the said land directly or through their attorney holders/ conduits to various persons by resorting to fraudulent means, thereby causing a huge loss to the government exchequer.

Owing to the establishment of prima facie, nexus of the criminal elements/ land grabbers/ Form Alaf holders and the Revenue officers/officials in alienation of about 150 kanals of Custodian land through fraudulent means, ACB has now registered another 08 formal case FIRs in P/S ACB Central J&K for in-depth investigation under the provisions of J&K Prevention of Corruption Act, criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery and fraud against (1) Suresh Sharma S/o Ved Parkash R/o Kangrail Jammu the then Patwari, Patwar Halqa Barn, Tehsil Balwal, (2) Mohit Gupta S/o Shri Funny Bushan Gupta R/o H .No. 95, Suraksha Vihar, Paloura Top Jammu the then Tehsildar Balwal, (3) Kuldeep Singh S/o Aya Singh R/o House No. 83/84 Bakshi Nagar Jammu, (4) Anjali Slathia W/o Shri Balvinder Singh R/o Bhopur, Tehsil Akhnoor District Jammu, (5) Navjot Singh S/O Ajit Singh R/o Ranjan Partly Gharota Jammu the then Patwari, Patwar Halqa Barn, Tehsil Balwal, (6) Farooq Khan S/o Mohd Sher R/o Mangalnar Manjakot, Rajouri the then Tehsildar Balwal, (7) Faryad Ahmed the then Patwari, Patwar Halqa Kot, Tehsil Jammu, (😎 Narain Singh (now dead) the then Tehsildar Jammu, (9) Deedar Singh S/o Inder Singh R/o Batala Tehsil Bhimber A/p Chatha Farm Jammu, (10) Omkar Singh S/o Shri Paras Ram R/o village lower Muthi, Tehsil Jammu North District Jammu , (11) Bashir Ahmad the then Patwari, Patwar Halqa Raipur Domana (12) Mohd Aslam the then Girdawar circle Misriwala, (13) Avtar Singh the then Tehsildar Jammu, (14) Sat Pal S/O Nanak Chand R/O Gadi Garh Jammu, (15) Shabir Ahmed the then Patwari, Patwar Halqa Kot, (16) Iqbal Zargar Girdawar circle Balwal, (17) Guldarshan Singh the then Naib Tehsildar Balwal (now dead), (18) Kamal Kohli S/O Madan Lal R/o Hardo Muthi Rajbagh Kathua, (19) Shakeel Ahmad the then Patwari, Patwar Halqa Balwal, (20) Aqeel Ahmad the then Naib Tehsildar Balwal, (21) Jaspal Singh S/o Ram Singh R/o village Choura District Gurdaspur Punjab A/P Rajbagh Kathua, (22) Rashpal Singh the then Patwari, Patwar Halqa Balwal, (23) Hans Raj the then Girdawar circle Balwal , (24) Farooq Khan the then Tehsildar Balwal, (25) Mangat Singh S/o Atter Singh R/o Near Janta Floour Mill Gangyal, Jammu, (26) Kulwant Singh S/o Faqeer Singh R/o Suhawada, Darap, Sehora Tehsil Bishnah, Jammu, (27) Sham Singh the then Naib Tehsildar Balwal and others.

Aadhaar not conclusive proof of citizenship, says SC

0
SC to hear on July 24 Maharashtra govt’s plea against Bombay HC verdict SC-Train blast

New Delhi, Aug 12:The Supreme Court on Tuesday remarked that the Election Commission of India (ECI) is correct in asserting that an Aadhaar card does not constitute conclusive proof of citizenship.

A Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi further stated that the inclusion or exclusion of citizens and non-citizens from the electoral rolls lies within the mandate of the poll body.

The observations were made by the Justice Kant-led Bench while hearing a batch of pleas challenging the Special Intensive Revisions (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar.

“The EC is correct in saying Aadhaar cannot be accepted as conclusive proof of citizenship. It has to be verified,” it remarked.

During the hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the petitioners, argued that the SIR process could lead to large-scale disenfranchisement of vulnerable citizens, especially those unable to submit the required forms.

Sibal argued that most of the enlisted documents are not available to people in Bihar. “Bihar people don’t have these documents, that’s the point,” he submitted.

To this, the Justice Kant-led Bench said, “It is a very sweeping argument that in Bihar, nobody possesses these documents. Aadhaar and a ration card they have? There must be something to prove you are a citizen of India. Everybody possesses some certificate – you need it even to buy a SIM.”

It further remarked that the Aadhaar Act itself makes it clear that an Aadhaar number is not proof of citizenship, and that the ECI’s stand is consistent with this legal position.

Apart from Kapil Sibal, a battery of lawyers, including senior advocates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Gopal Sankaranarayanan, Prashant Bhushan and Vrinda Grover, presented their oral arguments.

The apex court will resume hearing the matter on Wednesday.

In a recently filed affidavit, the ECI opposed the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR)’s demand to disclose constituency and booth-wise details of about 65 lakh electors whose enumeration forms were not submitted.

The poll body said that the statutory scheme under the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, does not mandate creating or publishing such a list.

The ADR’s application had sought two directions: first, to publish a constituency and booth-wise list of omitted electors with reasons such as death, permanent migration, duplication, or being untraceable; and second, to disclose the names of electors whose enumeration forms have been “not recommended” by the Booth Level Officers (BLOs).

Commuters face tough time due to revised timetable of train service between Srinagar and Banihal

Commuters face tough time due to revised timetable of train service between Srinagar and Banihal

Banihal, Aug 12: The revised railway timetable between Srinagar, Anantnag and Banihal has caused manifold difficulties to thousands of commuters and tourists, with a long gap of five and a half hours in train services during daytime.

The suspension of train services from 10:30 am to 04:00 pm has forced many to switch to other means of road transport, leading them to higher travel costs, long journey times and exposure to traffic congestion.

Railway officials however link the new schedule to the uninterrupted operation of the Vande Bharat Express service.

Though the new timetable ensures smooth running of two Vande Bharat trains and one Mail Express between Katra and Srinagar, it has severely curtailed the availability of affordable, safe, and time efficient rail travel for local passengers, passengers informed.

Under the revised timetable, effective from April 01 this year, seven trains run in each direction between Banihal and Srinagar in the morning and evening hours. However, between 10:45 am and 3:05 pm no trains operate from Banihal to Anantnag and Srinagar, and between 10:30 am and 4:03 pm no services are available from Srinagar to Anantnag and Banihal.

The passengers said the decision has impacted a wide range of travelers  including daily commuters, tourists, patients, students, and traders,  many of whom now have no choice but to rely on road transport during the day.

The commuters have demanded the previous timetable be restored for the Banihal–Srinagar section during daytime hours to prevent further inconvenience to passengers.

Railway officials on conditions of anonymity told Greater Kashmir that the changes were necessary to accommodate the Vande Bharat and Mail Express services on the Katra–Srinagar route.

They added that train operations between Budgam and Baramulla remain unaffected, with around ten trains running in each direction daily on that section.

AI can help detect early larynx cancer from sound of voice: Study

0
Gene-based blood test may help predict early signs of cancer's return

New Delhi, Aug 12: A team of US scientists showed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help detect early larynx or voice box cancer from the sound of the patient’s voice.

Cancer of the voice box is an important public health burden. In 2021, there were an estimated 1.1 million cases of laryngeal cancer worldwide, and approximately 100,000 people died from it.

Risk factors include smoking, alcohol abuse, and infection with human papillomavirus.

The prognosis for laryngeal cancer ranges from 35 per cent to 78 per cent survival over five years when treated, depending on the tumour’s stage and its location within the voice box.

Now, researchers from the Oregon Health & Science University showed that abnormalities of the vocal folds can be detected from the sound of the voice using AI.

Such ‘vocal fold lesions’ can be benign, like nodules or polyps, but may also represent the early stages of laryngeal cancer.

These proof-of-principle results open the door for a new application of AI: namely, to recognise the early warning stages of laryngeal cancer from voice recordings, said the team in the paper published in the journal Frontiers in Digital Health.

“Here we show that with this dataset we could use vocal biomarkers to distinguish voices from patients with vocal fold lesions from those without such lesions,” said Dr Phillip Jenkins, postdoctoral fellow in clinical informatics at Oregon.

In the study, Jenkins and team analysed variations in tone, pitch, volume, and clarity with 12,523 voice recordings of 306 participants from across North America.

A minority were from patients with known laryngeal cancer, benign vocal fold lesions, or two other conditions of the voice box: spasmodic dysphonia and unilateral vocal fold paralysis.

The researchers focused on differences in a number of acoustic features of the voice: for example, the mean fundamental frequency (pitch); jitter, variation in pitch within speech; shimmer, variation of the amplitude; and the harmonic-to-noise ratio, a measure of the relation between harmonic and noise components of speech.

They found marked differences in the harmonic-to-noise ratio and fundamental frequency between men without any voice disorder, men with benign vocal fold lesions, and men with laryngeal cancer.

They didn’t find any informative acoustic features among women, but it is possible that a larger dataset would reveal such differences.

Variation in the harmonic-to-noise ratio can be helpful to monitor the clinical evolution of vocal fold lesions, and to detect laryngeal cancer at an early stage, at least in men, the researchers said.
