Proud to see women breaking barriers in agricultural sciences: LG Sinha

Srinagar, Jul 4: Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha Friday said that he was proud to see women breaking barriers in agricultural sciences and technology.

In his address at the 6th convocation ceremony of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Kashmir (SKUAST-K), the LG said, “Proud to see our daughters breaking barriers and achieving success in Agricultural Science and Technology. It reflects a bright future for J&K and the nation.”

During the convocation, of the 5250 degrees of undergraduate, master’s, and PhD, 2661 degrees were awarded to women, of the 150 students conferred with gold medals, 115 were women, and of the 445 Certificates of Merit, 334 were conferred to women.

LG Sinha, who is also the Chancellor of J&K universities, asked the SKUAST-K graduates to uphold curiosity, innovation and lifelong learning as core values, saying these were essential for personal growth and national development.

He said that the greatest divine gift bestowed upon humankind was “curiosity of the mind.”

“I urge every graduating student to keep the flame of curiosity alive throughout their life. It is this curiosity that drives innovation, leads to discovery, and enables one to contribute meaningfully to society and the country,” the LG said.

He said that ‘Viksit Bharat, Viksit Jammu Kashmir’ and ‘prosperous farming community’ were the resolutions of the J&K administration.

“The Centre, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is committed to developing J&K as a hub of horticulture,” LG Sinha said.

He congratulated SKUAST-K for creating a competent and competitive human resource, shaping up the farm sector in J&K, besides showing remarkable improvement in its ranking.

In his address, the LG also spoke on the transformative reforms taking place in agriculture and allied sectors in J&K over the past few years.

“The agriculture and allied sectors have truly become the mainstay of India’s economy under the visionary leadership of PM Modi,” he said.

LG Sinha said this change was strongly reflected in J&K’s agricultural landscape.

“Today, the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) has emerged as a role model of agricultural revolution in the entire country,” he said.

The LG said that J&K has set four major goals for agriculture and allied sector in the last five years which include transforming the agriculture sector into a sustainable-commercial agriculture economy, creating an agri-business ecosystem with value chain, farmer and community-centric approach for holistic development of agriculture, increasing the income of farming families, and securing their livelihood.

“I urge the graduating students to make their valuable contribution to innovation and progressive farming and take the lead in agri-technology, food technology, and groundbreaking innovation. Your passion and ideas will shape the future of India’s agriculture sector,” he said.

LG Sinha said that education was not preparation for life but life in itself.

“I firmly believe that if education is in accordance with the time and the needs of the global industry, then it is the most precious asset of society,” he said.

The LG also commended Vice Chancellor SKUAST-K, Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganai and his team for developing modern, state-of-the-art infrastructure and a new-age educational platform.

“New academic programmes, centres of excellence, and research in modern technology areas – Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Gene Editing, Regenerative Medicine, Speed Breeding – have brought J&K closer to achieving its goal of becoming a knowledge economy and provided an opportunity to promote J&K’s bio-economy,” he said.

R S Pathania seeks time bound completion of JJM projects

Udhampur, Jul 4: MLA Udhampur East R S Pathania has emphasised the need for the holistic and time-bound completion of all projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).

Reiterating the government’s commitment, Pathania said that providing clean, potable water to every household was a national priority and a core resolution of the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Pathania stated this while interacting with the public and officials during a series of ‘Janata Darbars’ at Panchayat Ghar Seen Brahmana; Neelam Palace Manwal and Battal Balian on Friday.

The interactions were aimed at making efforts to ensure equitable access to safe drinking water and strengthen local infrastructure.

Pathania said that thousands of crores were allocated to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir under JJM and it was the collective responsibility of the administration and implementing agencies to ensure that these funds were used efficiently, transparently, and for the benefit of the people.

During an on-spot inspection of the Water Supply Scheme at Seen Brahmana, Pathania reviewed the primary water source and issued strict directions to prevent contamination from outflows originating near the cremation ground. He instructed the immediate restoration of a defunct tubewell constructed nearly two decades ago and called for the development of an additional borewell to meet the increasing drinking water demands of the local population.

BJP MLA also stressed that the scheme must be completed within a defined timeframe to avoid delays.

Pathania further raised the long-pending issue of water being sourced from Jhajjar Nallah and called for a rationalized solution. Expressing concern over the substandard execution of the Water Supply Scheme in Dhamma, where newly constructed filtration tanks began falling apart within months, he ordered immediate action against the responsible contractor.

He also directed the rectification of faulty underground pipelines and failing gravity-based rural water schemes (GRS), citing that quality, timely delivery, and accountability must be upheld as guiding principles in all government projects.

These, he said, were the hallmarks of the Modi government and must be emulated in the Union Territory by all officers and contractors involved in development works.

During the public meetings, Pathania announced funds for the construction of a community shed near Shiv Mandir in Sodan and also announced a Common Facility Centre (CFC) at Seen Brahmana to facilitate public meetings and local gatherings.

At Manwal, he directed the Department of Agriculture to ensure early completion of mushroom sheds and polyhouses.

He also reviewed the status of the Baryalta-Satrari JJM Scheme, in Bhatti Barigarh water supply and instructed that borewells in the region be connected to the main distribution network to resolve ongoing water scarcity issues. He took serious note of the out-of-order handpumps and instructed the concerned officials to ensure their immediate repair.

With the onset of the rainy season, Pathania emphasised the need for a proactive and modern approach by the Public Works Department to unclog blocked roads and maintain road connectivity. He expressed deep concern over the dysfunctional state of irrigation canals and stressed that these must be restored on a priority basis to support paddy cultivation and protect the livelihood of farmers.

Envisioning a brighter and more sustainable future for his constituency, Pathania reiterated his commitment to transforming Udhampur East into a model constituency in terms of water supply, road connectivity, healthcare, and education. He stressed that there must be continuous appraisal and upgradation of grassroots-level facilities and that the people’s aspirations must be met with sincerity, efficiency, and determination.

‘J&K first to implement Evergreen Revolution’

‘J&K first to implement Evergreen Revolution’

Srinagar, Jul 4: Vice Chancellor Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Kashmir (SKUAST-K), Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Friday said Jammu and Kashmir was the first in the country to implement the ‘Evergreen Revolution’ under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP).

Speaking at the 6th convocation, VC SKUAST-K said, “Post ‘Green Revolution’, J&K has become the first in the country to conceptualise and implement a visionary policy for the ‘Evergreen Revolution’ under the HADP, based on three important verticals – food, nutritional, and economic security; equity and inclusiveness of marginal farmers and fringe communities; and sustainable ecosystems.

He said that J&K spearheaded the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 across the country, built its implementation framework in agri-education and positioned itself as the top innovation-led university.

Ganai congratulated the graduating students and said these young minds carry the responsibility of shaping the future of the society, state, and the country, besides carving out a niche for themselves.

“I am confident that they carry forward the legacy of SKUAST-K and contribute meaningfully to a peaceful, progressive, and inclusive knowledge society,” he said.

“SKUAST-K-developed agri-education model under NEP-2020 that has been adopted by ICAR’s 6th Dean’s Committee for nationwide curriculum reform,” the VC SKUAST-K said. “Our education model at the undergraduate level is Degree by Design, which is a flexible, multidisciplinary and choice-based system,” he said.

Ganai said that SKUAT-K stands as the 5th best State Agriculture University (SAU) in the country as per the NIRF ranking 2024. “This position not only reflects our performance indicators but also symbolises our excellence,” he said.

The SKUAST-K VC said that the student enrollment at the varsity doubled in the last two years from 2500 to 5300, the highest increase in Gross Student Enrolment (GER) in any SAU across the country.

“Our university has 30 percent of the students from other states and UTs. SKUAST-K is first agricultural university in the country to institute a four-year B Tech programme in Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture with IIT Mandi, B Tech Bio Technology, B Tech Food Technology, B Tech Bio-Chemistry, B Sc Microbiology, B Tech Dairy Technology as well as four-year B Sc Economics with Data Science,” he said.

Ganai said SKUAST-K offers 67 Master’s, 55 PhD programmes, 70 Diploma and Skill courses, and 102 certificate courses that cater to the needs of a diverse student community. “Through our structured R&D programmes, we aim to address 12 of the 17 SDGs and improve our ranking on social development indices. Our goal is to double our agri GDP to 8 billion US dollars by 2030 and 80 billion US dollars by 2047,” he said.

The VC SKUAST-K said the varsity had scripted the game-changing HADP policy that was poised to transform the agricultural landscape of J&K.

“This project has been approved at a cost of Rs 5013 crore and with an additional support of Rs 1800 crore under J&K CIP, offering unlimited opportunities to give new directions to the agricultural economy of J&K,” he said.

Ganai said that through their innovative extension and community outreach model, SKUAST-K had transformed progressive farmers into champion farmers through knowledge, skill, and technology backing.

“Under HADP, the government has already established 500 Kisan Khidmat Ghars (KKGs), which are a vital part of our outreach strategy, bringing specialised guidance directly to the farmers and offering tailored technology support,” he said. The VC SKUAST-K said the varsity was the first in the country to make students adopt a panchayat or group of villages throughout their degree programmes, in contrast to other universities where students take up such programmes in the last year of their degree.

“Our focus is on reaching out to the people with the basket of our technologies and solutions through our agri-tech melas,” he said.

Ganai said that during the last four years, the university had earned 85 IPRs and established 72 startups and stands tall in the league of IITs and IISCs, much ahead of SAUs that had made SKUAST-K Numero Uno in innovations and startups among all 78 agri-varsities.

“We are among the very few universities that qualify for the QUAD Nations Programme on AI-ENGAGE. We have put up a joint proposal with Japan, Australia, and the US. For this, we seek the support of our Union Minister in this endeavour so that we can partner with these institutions for capacity building in these areas,” he said.

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Raj Singh Chouhan was the chief guest while Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who is the Chancellor of the university, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is Pro-Chancellor SKUAST-K, were the guests of honour on the occasion.

Minister for Agriculture Production and Farmers Welfare Javid Ahmad Dar, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Principal Secretary Agriculture Production Department, Shailendra Kumar, and Deputy Director General (Education), ICAR, GoI, Prof R C Agrawal were also present on the occasion.

At the 6th convocation of SKUAST-K, 5250 candidates, including 3051 undergraduates, 1611 Master’s degree holders, and 588 doctorates, were conferred with their degrees.

On the occasion, 150 toppers were awarded gold medals while 445 meritorious students were awarded certificates of merit.

Govt committed to promote esports: MoS Raksha Khadse

New Delhi, Jul 4: Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse on Friday highlighted the parallels between esports and traditional sports, emphasising that both demand discipline, mental resilience, and teamwork.

“Esports is inspiring India’s youth to excel in a rapidly evolving digital world,” she said at the Grand Finals of the Battlegrounds Mobile India Pro Series (BMPS) 2025 at Yashobhoomi, India International Convention and Expo Centre, Dwarka.

“Under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is committed to building world-class infrastructure, supporting career pathways, and ensuring that Indian talent shines on the global stage,” said Khadse. Khadse’s visit to the inauguration of the three-day tournament, running from July 4 to 6 and featuring 16 of India’s top BGMI professional teams competing for a Rs 4 crore prize pool, underscores the government’s growing recognition for esports as a mainstream sporting discipline, said an official statement.

The govt formally recognised esports in December 2022, when a Presidential Gazette Notification brought competitive gaming under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ purview. In Feb 2025, the Ministry extended its cash-incentive programme, traditionally reserved for Olympic and Commonwealth medalists, to include esports athletes and their coaches.

Currently, the regulatory oversight is shared between the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, aligning policy frameworks for both sport and digital governance. This structured approach is critical as Indian esports athletes set their sights on prestigious international events like the upcoming Olympic Esports Games 2027 in Saudi Arabia, the statement said.

Poor heart health may signal gestational diabetes risk in pregnancy: Study

Poor heart health may signal gestational diabetes risk in pregnancy: Study

New Delhi, July 04: Women with poor cardiovascular health may be at a higher risk of developing gestational diabetes and coronary artery calcium (CAC) in midlife, according to a study.

CAC refers to the buildup of calcium deposits in the walls of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart. It is a significant indicator of heart disease risk.

The findings, published in JAMA Cardiology, suggest that gestational diabetes is a marker of pre-pregnancy cardiovascular health. It also underscores the importance of healthcare providers in helping patients improve their cardiovascular health both prior and after pregnancy.

“We need to optimise cardiovascular health early in the life course,” said lead author Natalie Cameron, instructor in the Department of Medicine’s Division of General Internal Medicine at Northwestern University, US.

In the study, the investigators analysed patient data originally collected from 1985 to 2010. Of the more than 1,000 participants included in the cohort, the average age was 28.6 years.

All participants had at least one singleton birth and did not have pre-pregnancy diabetes.

Overall, the investigators found that participants with poor pre-pregnancy cardiovascular health compared to those with better pre-pregnancy cardiovascular health were more likely to have a pregnancy complicated by gestational diabetes and were more likely to develop CAC.

“Patients with gestational diabetes and other adverse pregnancy outcomes should follow up with a primary care provider so we can optimise heart health after pregnancy,” Cameron said.

“We need to take a good pregnancy history, ask about lifestyle behaviours such as diet and physical activity, and screen for cardiovascular disease risk factors. Then we can work with patients to help them optimise their heart health throughout their life course,” she added.

The researchers also urged revamping postpartum primary care for women with adverse pregnancy outcomes to seamlessly help patients get from obstetrics to a primary care provider.

Gold declines Rs 600 to Rs 99,020 per 10 g; silver plunges Rs 1,000

New Delhi, July 04: Gold prices declined Rs 600 to Rs 99,020 per 10 grams in the national capital on Friday due to fresh selling by stockists, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

The yellow metal of 99.9 per cent purity had settled at Rs 99,620 per 10 grams on Thursday.

Gold of 99.5 per cent purity slipped Rs 500 to Rs 98,500 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes). It had closed at Rs 99,000 per 10 grams in the previous market close.

“Gold prices declined on Friday as the US dollar and treasury yields moved higher following stronger than expected US macroeconomic data.

“Furthermore, the macro data reduced the expectation of a interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve, which also negatively impacted gold prices,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst, Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

Silver prices also plunged Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,04,800 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Friday. It had finished at Rs 1,05,800 per kg in the previous market close.

Spot gold in the international markets went up marginally to USD 3,334.45 per ounce.

“Gold prices may see fresh movement ahead of the upcoming US Personal Consumption Expenditures Price (PCE) inflation report.

“A stronger than expected PCE data could revive inflation worries and lift safe-haven demand, while a softer print may boost hopes for interest rate cuts,” Abans Financial Services’ Chief Executive Officer Chintan Mehta said.
